Rodgers Should Be Jordan Love's Biggest Fan

Young quarterback's success is Rodgers' ticket out of town.

Training camp week is finally here, and of course, all eyes will be on the quarterbacks.  Which is a shame, because there will be a lot of intriguing position battles all over the field.  Cornerback, offensive line, and receiver just to mention a few.

But it seems most all of us are convinced that quarterback is the only thing that really matters.  And that brings us to an interesting dynamic in the ongoing drama.  In that now infamous ESPN interview with Kenny Mayne, Aaron Rodgers stated that the Packers drafting Jordan Love has nothing to do with his unhappiness with the organization.

However, he almost immediately contradicted that statement by going on to say “A lot of this was put into motion last year.”  Yeah, last year.  The year Love was drafted.  He added “The wrench was just kind of thrown into it when I won the MVP and played the way I played last year.  So this is the spill out from that.”

Rodgers is clearly saying that he believes the drafting of Love was part of a plan to get rid of him.  So it is disingenuous to claim it has nothing to do with his alienation.  The Green Bay front office has been widely criticized for not “consulting” Rodgers before taking Love in the first round.  Come on.  Would that really have made a difference?  Would Rodgers have been any less paranoid?  What if Brian Gutekunst had consulted him ahead of time, and Rodgers had objected to it?  Would Gutey have selected Love anyway?  Likely yes.  And that would have gotten Rodgers even more riled up.

So, as training camp gets ready to begin, we are left with the ultimate irony.  Aaron Rodgers, so offended by the drafting of Love, should now be pulling for the second year signal caller to be a huge and immediate success.  Rodgers wants out of Green Bay, right?  The Packers insist they are not trading him, under any circumstances.

Unless.....

Unless Jordan Love balls out and shows he can play winning football right from the start.  My bet is that Rodgers does not report to camp.  And not just because he is unhappy with management.  If QB12 reports, he knows he immediately becomes the week one starter and takes over the first team reps.  Love is relegated to back-up, and the Packers don’t get the opportunity to see if their young quarterback can win a regular season game under center.  Rodgers gains nothing toward his goal of going elsewhere.

Since Rodgers is already wealthy and can afford it, the smart move for him is to hold out well into the season, or temporarily retire.  That forces the Packers to see what they’ve got in Love.  Aaron’s hope would be that Love emerges quickly and Green Bay is winning.  If that happens, the Packers would surely be more than happy to deal Rodgers away in a timely manner, dump his salary, and be done with the drama.

Rodgers gets his fresh start elsewhere.  Jordan Love becomes the new local hero.  The Packers get a high draft pick or two in a trade, and some much needed salary cap room to work with.  Everybody wins.

It’s basically the same strategy used by Carson Palmer to escape the Cincinnati Bengals in 2011.  Palmer wouldn’t report for the start of the season, forcing the Bengals to play young Andy Dalton.  Dalton played well and showed promise.  So much so, that by midseason Cincinnati was comfortable enough to trade Palmer to the Raiders.  By the way, Palmer’s agent was David Dunn.  And, you probably already know, that Aaron Rodgers’ agent is the same David Dunn.  It seems obvious to me Dunn is attempting to orchestrate the same process.

(A footnote here.  Perhaps Rodgers should be careful what he wishes for.  After leaving the Bengals, Palmer went on to seven injury-riddled, mostly unsuccessful seasons.  He lasted just two losing years in Oakland.  Spent the last five in Arizona where he made the playoffs only once.)

Judging by what I read and hear, most Green Bay fans are hoping Rodgers reports to camp and all is forgiven and forgotten.  That hope is misplaced.  He doesn't want to be here.  The scenario we should be pulling for is for Rodgers to hold out, and Love to develop quickly .  That’s the only way we’re going to get a happy ending.

Yeah, it really sounds like Rodgers is done with the Packers and just wants to get out. He's gone pretty far down this road, and it's hard to picture a scenario where he stays with the Packers with his pride intact. Returning to the fold would look like a surrender. I agree that Love playing well and Rodgers being traded ASAP is the best case scenario at this point. I don't think Carson Palmer's career after leaving the Bengals has anything to do with Rodgers, though. They are different players, and if Rodgers is traded to a decent team, he very well could be successful.

Aaron Rodgers will be traded to the worst possible team at the moment of the trade, to get as high draft picks as Packers can. Aaron Rodgers will not be traded to Broncos or Raiders, maybe to Jets, Falcons, Saints (they are in deep Cap Hell!), Panthers, WFT, Miami & Dallas (which will be hilarious, but I put Dallas here just for joke!)...

Sadly, Rodgers would likely just threaten to retire. That’s why a trade is problematic. He doesn’t have a contractual veto but he has an effective one if he’s willing to not play.

If he retires, he walks away from a metric fuckton of money. He may threaten to retire, but I strongly doubt he will. Unless he's named permanent host of Jeopardy, of course.

He’s got plenty of money. If he hadn’t this wouldn’t be happening. I do t know if he’s willing to back up the bluff, but he is certainly capable of screwing up any trade he doesn’t like. He doesn’t have to actually retire to do so, just create doubt on the part of the buyer, who already knows he would still be very wealthy even if he did.

Denver has not been a good team. Their 5-11 record was mostly due to their 25th ranked D. Rodgers isn't going to upgrade the D unless he controls the 70% of the clock and scores on a majority of possessions and keeps them off the field.

His vision of green grass may turn out to be brown.

Speaking of HELL, I'd trade him to Houston. High picks for us along with an ILB and IDL and a terrible offensive line for the "QB God/King" Not sure how well he'd hold up without an excellent offensive line like he's enjoyed in GB for all these years. GPB

IF Rodgers does the same thing as Palmer did, and he comes back mid season or whatnot, I simply sit his ass on the bench. Play Love the rest of the year. Have Love and Bortles play, Rodgers doesn't dress.

Rodgers is so butthurt over them drafting Love, then he will be extremely butthurt over them playing Love over him.

I would not trade him this year, no matter what. He can come back and play or he can sit out the year. His choice. Its as simple as that. Then trade his ass in the spring to the worst team that wants him.

I've had this same thought, but I just don't think it's feasible. How would the rest of the team feel if Rodgers was not allowed to suit up while Love was out there struggling, which he almost inevitably would? Not good. The management would be perceived as placing their feud with Rodgers over the success of the team. I think it would make the organization look very, very bad.

If the Packers were like 1-6 or something and Rodgers then decided to come back. Yeah, no he can sit.
Either way, I don't trade him this year.

Just my guess, he doesn't report right away. Before Family night he will come back, and they will have a new deal worked out. What that is, who knows.

I think you’re right. But it had BETTER not be with a lot of guaranteed money. Love has to play. ARod is getting older. And he is not the GM. You can’t allow any player, regardless of how good they are, the ability to dictate to the GM what to do with the roster.

I would not be surprised if he is there on day 1. I would not be surprised if he wasn't.

This is my other thought. He will accept whatever the deal was they offered this offseason, making him the highest paid QB right before camp starts. He did this all to 'prove his point' and make the Packers front office take some heat for whatever wrong doings he thought they did to him.
I would say that is the least likely to happen, but it would not surprise me if it were to happen.

Not impossible, perhaps the most plausible reunion scenario I’ve seen. I am not sure I believe it, but it would be a nice surprise. If it’s guaranteed money, I think we will possibly regret it after this year. 2 years guaranteed at most and I could live with it. That would be 40. Not sure that would work for Rodgers.

Yeah, good point. You could easily see a number of big names sit out under the logic of 'if we're not trying to win, I'm not going out and risking injury'. Of course the Packers could impose financial penalties, but then you're just destroying the team/culture/attractivness to future FA's, etc.

Did I miss something...? When did Rodgers actually say he didn't want to play for the Packers anymore...? The best chance for the Packers to reach the Super Bowl this season is for Aaron Rodgers to be their QB. Jordan Love can continue to be his backup just like AR was for Brett Farve. If AR says he wants out next season then the Packers can make a trade next spring. That would be the best scenario for the Packers this season. J love at QB this season would be a disaster, a talented young man but he has a lot to learn/experience before starting at QB for the Packers.

You will never get experience holding a clipboard or guiding the scout team in practice. The time is now for Love. Rodgers is under contract to play this year. It looks like he has decided to stay away. That is his choice. Next man up, that will be a good "experience" for J. Love.

I totally see your point blondy45, however It’s a hard call to make considering that we haven’t even seen Love play a pre-season game.

With the career expectancy of a legit starter caliber QB now 10-15 years there is nothing lost in keeping him as the backup for another season - with the caveat that he sees more game time than just pre-season or victory formation.

Add to this that the Packers will go into salary cap hell next year. Lots of starting players will be on the block. The Packers need assurances that Love isn’t going to blow-up so that they can make more strategic decisions over who is retained or let go.

Contrarian question here: what’s everyone’s thoughts on packing up Rodgers and Adams in a MEGA-TRADE? Adams is clearly anchored to Rodgers and has a high chance of being a locker room distraction if Rodgers gets shipped. I wonder if shipping them both out together would yield even more value to GB than individually.

Yeah, unless there's some details I'm missing, his 'last dance' tweet probably implies that he and Adams intend to 'go out there for one more year and try to win a championship together'.

But that's not how the media wrote their headlines, so nobody seems to have taken it that way.

NJ,
You nor any of us know JL at QB would be a disaster. Statements like that have zero value. He might not play to AR's ability/talent in year one, but I have a hard time envisioning JL being a disaster. If it comes to JL playing give the guy a chance!

It does seem like Rodgers is done with the Packers, so I'm done with Rodgers. A great QB no doubt, but his talent has always been dwarfed by his ego. Screaming at coaches, shaking his head and rolling eyes at team-mates, at times it's been downright unsettling to watch.

Me too.

The most convincing point to me is something I heard a few weeks ago. Rodgers has had countless opportunities to speak to fans. Management and contracts aside, he could have easily made this offseason less dramatic, but he chose not to. Even if he comes back for the year and says he's excited to compete, packers fans have a right to be disappointed in him.

I couldn't agree more.

When there are rumors like these, you can either come out and say something like: "there are some problems, but we're all trying to sort them out and I hope to be back in GB once the season starts" or "there are some big problems which we seem unable to overcome and I don't think I'll be back". If there are no problems, just confirm the rumors are unsubstantiated instead of riding the drama train.

But this? Not saying anything, acting smug in interviews and refusing to even acknowledge the rumors, it tells me Rodgers hasn't much love or respect for Cheesehead Nation, and that really is the worst part in all of this. He couldn't care less about us it seems...

"This team needs some tough Love"
"Love will carry us through"
"My Love is your Love"

Hell, whether or not this whole drama started I WANTED Love to ball out. See, after Love was drafted I wanted him to be great, just like I do with EVERY Packers draft choice but that's not really the point here. I mean the NERVE of Gute drafting a QB after his present QB really wasn't looking like himself and hadn't for a few YEARS!

I honestly no longer care what happens with Aaron "The Drama Queen" Rodgers. Play or don't. Report or don't. Hell RETIRE if you need to A-Rod though I highly doubt you'll be the new host of Jeopardy IF that's your plan. Go to Colorado and hang with your new GF and her Mom. You guys can replay that last Stephan A Smith ramble together for all I care.

Sit out the year. The Packers would STILL have you under contract for 3 years if i'm understanding that correctly. Either way they'd STILL be able to dictate where you'd be traded to. The LAST thing I'd do is trade to to where you wanted to go. I'd ONLY trade you to who had the best offer IN the AFC. My feeling is there's enough GM's out there willing to trade the farm to save their job. Hell if Seattle would trade you for Russell Wilson, I'd do it in a second but that's just me.

Rodgers has now moved into first place of my Packers players shit list and it's not even close. Hell, at least with Brett Favre there were press conferences. The public didn't wait for Dianna Favre to retweet something and dissect it to get an idea what REALLY was happening. The Packers are going to be just fine with Jordan Love. WE'VE got a REAL QB Whisperer in MLF. I mean do you REALLY think that MVP season was all you and not at least SOME of MLF's offense? It may take a year or two but I think the Packers are going to be just fine. IMO Love will get us to the Playoffs this year but probably not the SB...at least yet. Basically he'd do EXACTLY what you've done for us the last 10 years for a hell of a lot less money AND drama.

Well put, Nick.

This is really where I’ve been coming from since that first draft day lob into all of Packerland. Aaron clearly has his reasons for wanting to move on, and I can respect that. No problem. We all have our lives to lead and our personal priorities.

What I do have a problem with is the cryptic dramas all Packer fans have had to endure for over 3 months. I’ve always felt, if a player doesn’t want to play in Green Bay, get him out. Rodgers will always have his legacy with the team, and I’m not going to vilify him, if this is more personal, like his desires to start a family elsewhere. Fine. He’s a great QB, and I appreciate his time here.

LaFleur & Gutekunst studied & interviewed Jordan Love extensively. They look like they may have gotten a steal with his dropping more than 20 draft slots, the equivalent of roughly three R1s on the draft value pts. chart. Remarkable coup by them, knowing how badly they wanted Love. Imagine what they must have been thinking when he fell to 26, the waiting, came within range of only an R4 to pull the trigger.

Like you, I support all of our Packers players, whether drafted or UDFA. They wanted Love because he can make every throw, had the strongest arm in his draft class, has both touch and accuracy at all levels, is big, athletic, and deemed a perfect fit for what Matt LaFleur wants to scheme offensively.

LaFleur is a very competitive HC. I think he’ll work tirelessly to see Jordan Love through this first season starting successfully, if that’s what this has indeed come to.

Interesting that this is what I too witnessed on draft night yet I have not seen it spoken of. AR seems to absolve MLF of any responsibility for JL but that picture on draft night told the full story - MLF was in love with the idea of drafting Love, once the top WRs were off the board.

Rodgers now knows he is the past in GB so why wouldn't he want to end it now and get on with his career someplace where he is wanted and has a future. That is understandable. What is not understandable is GB's insistence not to trade him this year for a boatload of picks/players and cap relief. It seems to me that such a trade is equivalent to hitting the lottery:

1 - you have your QB of the future in place;
2 - you get much needed cap relief; and,
3 - you get much needed premium draft picks and or players.

What's not to like? No SB in 2021? Poor baby.

Mark Murphy's logic makes no sense here. Either you want Rodgers or you don't. You can't say I want the league MVP but only for one more year while JL develops. You made your bed, now lie in it. Let Rodgers go. Let him find success elsewhere if he can. Just make sure you get a bundle in return. That would be sound business decision. Isn't that what MM claims re: everything else he does that involves the Packer organization? Practice what you preach buddy, put your big boy pants on and move on. It's the smart thing to do at this point (actually several months ago).

Archie, you bring up so many great points here.

I've poured a ton of energy into figuring out what might have been in play for an AR trade since DEN passed on taking a QB at the #9 spot on draft day 1. It sure looked like the Packers and Broncos were working towards something after the June 1 date.

The landscape has changed in DEN. A remarkable turn of events could still work in the Packers favor on this front, in that one of the Bowlen heirs dropped her lawsuit a few weeks ago against the Bowlen Family Trust, and that was supposed to go to trial this month. She said she would only do so if the Broncos were to be sold. It appears that is now in the works for what would be a record breaking estimate of between $8-10 Billion.

Rumblings from DEN media proclaim adding Aaron Rodgers via trade would help close the sale of the team. The word I've dug up is DEN might be willing to unload to make it happen. 3 R1s and a player appear to be the consensus starting point. Took a while for this kind of price to be considered the real starter for an AR trade, coming off his MVP season.

Who knows? Maybe the Packers are just waiting for getting closer to the trade deadline to make the draft picks in trade that much more valuable... possible.

DEN is a legit suitor, and might pay what we might never see if we wait out a year, as money talks (sale of the team). An interesting development in the DEN scenario.

Archie. you make good points. Yes, I believe the Pack FO was excited about Love, but that doesnt mean they wanted him to start asap. I hate to keep going back to TT, but when he drafted AR, he wasnt even looking for a QB. AR surprisingly fell, and TT even tried to trade out of the spot, but could find no takers! i wonder why no one wanted AR??? thats another topic. they immediately saw AR's potential when they got him, but they were more than happy to let him sit 3 years. i think MLF, MM, and Gute all like what they see with JL, but also know the best thing for the team is AR as QB. I see nothing wrong with that. AR says his MVP season threw a monkey wrench into the FO's plans. I think just the opposite. they were THRILLED their franchise QB was back and playing at an MVP level. Now JL can sit and learn longer, like AR did. WIN WIN...!!!!!!

Exactly, 51, They were drafting a very raw talent now with the hope of him being ready in a few years as Rod would be nearing 40. I personally like that instead of waiting until we have a 2 win season and then throw a young QB in with a poor team around him. This past season also proved that the offense was great even without a high drafted WR. Giving up over 30 pts was the main reason we lost a SB appearance.

I think it's quite possible, even likely, that Jordan Love will not be anywhere near a HOF level QB. I think that the "QB whisperer" schtick is waaaay overdone, and regardless, MLF has not shown that he is one. He's had some success, sure. But what came first, the chicken or the egg? Cousins, Ryan, Goff, Mariota and Rodgers is a mixed bag for sure.

I also think Rodgers is a pud. But he's been directly responsible for a lot of success in GB for over a decade. Hopefully, Love can do the same. But it's not likely.

You might be surprised.

My feelings are that MLF is indeed a QB whisperer. LaFleur coached Robert Griffin III to his highest QB rating in his career in 2012, his rookie year. 2015 he coached Matt Ryan to an MVP season. In 2017 he coached the 2nd year QB Jared Goff and the Rams to being the #1 scoring offense in the NFL. In 2020 Arron Rodgers also wins MVP under LaFleur's guidance.

I believe Jordan Love is going to shock the rest of the NFL this season with exceptional play, guided by possibly one of the best in the business currently. I'm hoping for a remarkable amount of success from Jordan Love this year, and I think MLF's competitiveness will drive that into happening. I really do. JMTC.

I remember Mike Shanahan in the 90's, after having Steve Young in SF and Elway in Denver, being called a QB guru and mastermind. Then Elway retired and Shanahan won exactly ONE more playoff game in Denver before getting fired.

I agree with your assessment on the QB whisperer thing. Either your QB has HOF talent or he doesn't. A good coach can help maximize your talent, but he's not transforming an average QB into a HOFer.

Yes...people forget Favre was 4-12 during Mike Sherman's last year in GB when he let Brett do what ever he wanted on plays...mostly forcing into coverage and INTs on audibles.

Then MM arrived and laid down the law and insisted Favre play with discipline and the plays called. They went 8-8. The second year the Packers went 13-3 and lost the NFCC when sadly Favre threw an undisciplined pass into double coverage.

Rodgers played well in 2008 after a few years learning MMs O but the last year of Sanders Defense was just horrible. Rodgers continued to thrive under MM until it became predictable and stale and so much perimeter passing trying to get chunk plays in 2017 and 2018.

Matt has done well with QBs...it is the major reason he is a HC.

That 4-12 year the team was decimated with injuries. They were literally signing receivers and running backs off the street. Favre probably didn't even know the names of the players he was throwing to half the time.

Well done Nick. I would like to add that when they drafted Love, I firmly believe that the FO felt that Love was far and away the best pick available so they drafted him.

Sure it would have been better to wait a year or two to pick ARod's successor but based on where they pick most years, what were the chances that a quarterback as good as they felt Love was would be available to them.

I firmly believe that was their thought process and that make a whole lot of sense to me.

The Packers are probably waiting for Rodgers to make a move. Retirement doesn’t seem like a Rodgers type of move. Holding out is more likely. If he shows up on Wednesday then what was this all about. I don’t think there’s much of a chance that Love comes in and shows he’s the guy. That’s going to take time, and this team will look a lot different next year, a rebuilding year. A Beautiful Mystery in Mr. Rodgers neighborhood.

I don't know what is going to happen, but I've reached the point where I'm numb and just really don't care. Do I want Rodgers back? Yes, of course. As much as we all want Love to succeed that is FAR from guaranteed, and we have a team that is built to win this year. The only things lacking: (a) short-term certainty at LT; (b) a serious running mate for Clark; and (c) a legit #2 WR to emerge out of multiple candidates. Three holes on a team, which is not bad in today's NFL. Is Jordan Love capable of taking this team to the Super Bowl as a first year starter? No. There are only two QBs to make it to a Super Bowl in Y1 as a starter (Warner and Brady). But the bigger question is this: Can one Aaron Charles Rodgers get it done? To me, he lost that game against Tampa. He needed to find a way to get it done. It didn't. I don't care who he plays for in 2021. He can make someone an instant contender. I don't know that he can make anyone an instant champion.

I agree that, if traded, AR will make a team and instant contender. And that is why I am firmly against a slew of draft choices. We now pick in the late 20's and that is what we would get with trading AR for draft picks.

We need great players first and foremost.

A big advantage of early round draft picks when you have an already very good roster with a tight cap is paying lower salaries for 4 years...some even with 5th year option contracts.

And cap space is needed after this season with so many good Packers' contracts ending or needing extensions.

Adding a lot of top veterans with in a trade will do little for the tight cap as they will bring large contracts with them in a trade.

I would rather keep our good, proven players than have to coach up new additions.

Interesting that everyone is sick the Drama. Yet another article rehashing the past. I'm not a Love Fan. I didn't like the pick. And I doubt that anyone will be happy with the results. The assumption Love is Rodgers ticket out of town, is why Gute made the pick in the first place. Rodgers hasn't said anything yet.!!! The thing we have learned: There is No place for Loyalty in Green Bay anymore. By asking for a trade; It didn't have anything to do with money. And I'm sure every player in the NFL, understands the Franchise Tag. It's the "Teams direction " that changed with the pick. "Thats the bitch." You don't get great players to come to Green Bay, if the primary mission " isn't winning." ( There were other holes!! .) Rodgers wasn't hurt. Yet; Gutey still drafted change. The process of replacing Rodgers was obvious. The only way we got the smiths (etc.) to come to Green Bay was because of him. Nobody is going to come to Green Bay for Love!! As far as I'm concerned; he's not just an number on a team. Rodger's is a rare player. Not a complicated one. Don't be Blind to that.

New GM Hew HC. New QB. That is how the NFL works.

That formula repeats itself almost every year. What makes this situation unique is Rodgers is coming off a great season. That was the wrench. The well has been poisoned so you must move on.

Will Rodgers report on time? Highly doubtful. Unless GB agrees to trade him after this season in return for playing one more year of his contract. I now think that is the stupid approach from a business perspective as nothing good is going to come from keeping AR in GB.

I could see your point if we drafted a top QB prospect or signed a Young type as a backup. He's too selfish and sensitive to realize that he will be 38 in Dec and that the Packers need to prepare for the eventual retirement of one of the greats. We used that technique once before as have many successful teams. Finally, let's please stop with this BS that he hasn't said anything yet !

Yeah. No.

Rodgers should be/do a lot of things.

1. He should avoid being a self centered douchenozzle?

2. He should stop lying about why he’s mad (like you mentioned), Or, hell, try to actually tell people what he’s mad about in the first place.

3. He should look in the GD mirror. HE bemoans not getting enough veteran help for January, and yet, HE bears at least some responsibility for playoff losses in 2020, 2019, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2009.

4. He should stop being a hypocrite. He says he cares about his team, then he bails on them and causes a circus because his fee-fees are hurting.

5. He should try and remember how he felt in the summer of 08 when his predecessor DID THE SAME THING HE IS DOING TO HIM. Poor Jordan Love.

6. He should recognize that Gute is actually doing a very good job. He’s not perfect, but this team is WAY better than it was in 2017.

7. He should realize that, unlike Carson Palmer, his best chance to win one last Lombardi is in Titletown. This roster is ready to compete.

8. He should know that if he “retires,” the top line of his football epitaph will read “quitter.” And it should.

9. He should realize that the Packers LITERALLY CAN NOT trade him from a salary cap perspective until March of 2022. So this whole drama is pointless.

10. And finally? He should look in the mirror and realize that there is one common denominator with all the problems he’s had with people at work, and in his personal life. HIM. Dude is a toxic narcissist, and while I will root for him as the Packers QB this year, I will not miss his cranky ass. Bye, Felicia.

PS: He will show up. He has no leverage. I’d guess the week before week 1. I hope Love lights it up in the pre-season, but I DO NOT want Gute bowing to His Royal Highness. No substantial new contract. No trade. Dare him to retire. Make him eat it.

This kind of sums up how I feel, Bearmeat.

If this is the case, I don't take umbrage with his desires to move to a different team, and start a family in a new locale. Thats fine, and while it is a bit of a blow to all of us Packer fans, I can understand that after 16 years here.

What I do have trouble with are his methods. Punking his own fan base for more than 3 months with his cryptic, 3rd party communications is highly disrespectful to all who literally bleed green & gold. All we've done is support him and the team. The fans deserved better treatment. Real, honest communications.

Didn't realize Dunn is his agent, and I'm sure their plan is to work the Carson Palmer move out of town, if possible. The Packers have leverage in that they can make him sit for as long as they want. Rodgers has leverage in being wealthy enough to absorb that hit of a retirement/hold out.

If he really wants out, I'll trust the front office to handle this as best they can, while supporting Jordan Love and this Packers team assembled. If he chooses to stay, I'll still support him, but he's shown himself to indeed be a "complicated fellow." This is all just too weird, and I'll support whatever this Packers team decides is best.

Not knowing the status of your MVP QB1 two days prior to the start of TC is unsettling for any Packer fan. I was so rattled by the draft day statement that I felt as if a family member or a friend had passed. This has been 3 months of crazy. The Packers, meanwhile, gave Love almost every opportunity throughout the OTAs to work into the QB1 position. LaFleur is going to guide him well. All we can do is hope for the best and support the team.

Maybe I'm alone in this opinion, but if Rodgers holds out, I think Blake Bortles will be the starting QB. I'm fine with that. I think he could have quite a bit of success running MLF offense.

What if Bortles starts, runs the offense the way MLF wants, and gets the Packers to the Super Bowl? That would lead to some QB controversy. Rodgers stock may actually go down.

Kurt Benkert throws such a better ball than Bortles, it makes me wonder if Bortles even makes this 53 man roster. Benkert looks like he's throwing darts. Maybe Bortles sticks for his experience, his veteran presence and mentorship, and his relationships with our staff, but I don't think it is a given.

That is the danger of anyone else doing well (Bortles or Love). If they look good, by extension, it makes #12 look less special. The less special he looks, the less he will bring in trade. So it is a situation where the benefits are not as clear. Really, the best time to have traded #12 was probably in the days before the draft.

---------------------------------
An important thing to consider here is Palmer's age and situation in Cincinnati compared to Rodgers in Green Bay. Palmer had some injury issues in Cincinnati too. Rodger's injury history isn't identical (two broken collarbones and foot injuries early in his career) but there is a history.

I know Rodgers wants to play into his 40s. That doesn't mean he can. When Palmer was traded to the Raiders, he was five years, or so, younger than Rodgers. Being in his late thirties, Rodgers' trade value will diminish. The desperation factor on the part of a team who might need a QB is probably the largest unknown in a trade scenario.

Very well put. The viable lifespan of any player is limited and unpredictable. Many seem to see last year as a plateau that goes on for the foreseeable future. I’ve been looking back to games from his first MVP season. I don’t think there is much doubt that I’d take that player over the Rodgers of last year every time. He’s not the athlete he was. It has not prevented him from being a great player yet, but that path has commenced. This could easily be his last great year. Just makes it all the more ridiculous.

I would temper the “playing well” for J Love. He could surprise and ball out in his first year starting. I suspect he will have maybe a couple good games, but if he is average I’d be happy. Something like 25 TDS, twelve interceptions, and 3k yards would seem the best expectation this season. My view is he takes his lumps and learns; comes back a better player in 2022.

First, about Rodgers "paranoia" about the drafting of Love. Remeber, if they're really out to get you, you're not paranoid. And the drafting of Love was all about replacing Rodgers at a time of the Packers choosing. Rodgers MVP year did, indeed, throw a glitch into that scenario. So, it seems that Rodgers is seeing the situation clearly. That he is also acting like a horse's behind is a different issue. The David Dunn speculation is interesting, but could make Davante Adams look like a bad guy in a year. If Rodgers does manage a trade to Oakland (where players careers go to die- just ask Charles Woodson), and Adams ends up signing with Oakland to re-unite with Rodgers, what then happened to all of the blather about DA's with to reunite with Carr? Just hot air? Because these two seem joined at the hip on social media, and their desire to get out of GB. Training camp opens in two days. We'll have a lot more clarity on the situation once that happens.

I think Rodgers will retire rather than holdout. Retirement avoids the fines for missing TC and means that Rodgers has less to pay back to the Packers assuming that the Packers go after the money. Vegas took down all of their odds and over/unders for the entire NFC North over the weekend so they may be preparing for a Rodgers retirement.

If Rodgers does retire the Packers need to move quickly on the trade front as Rodgers value will deteriorate the longer he remains retired. Rodgers agent Dunn played it out the same way with Carson Palmer and the Bengals several years ago as the author has correctly pointed out.

If Rodgers returns, which is still possible, we get one more shot at an SB run. If not the season is basically over before it begins in terms of an SB run so as fans we should temper our expectations accordingly.

One way or the other it's going to be an interesting ride. Thanks, since '61

Bearmeat - If Rodgers shows up making him sit only punishes the team and the fans who pay good money to watch Rodgers and the Packers play. If they did sit Rodgers that could end up with him retiring anyway in which case the Packers get no return.

Apparently during the 2020 draft the Packers tried to trade Rodgers for Justin Hebert on draft day. When that trade didn’t work out the Packers took Love. I’m thinking that this all started because the Packers tried to trade Rodgers rather than their drafting Love. That would explain Rodgers being upset with Gute and wanting a guarantee from the Packers for the next few seasons. It would also mean that this whole mess started with the FO trying to trade Rodgers behind his back which would change how we view this entire episode.

The FO would not want this to come out to the fan base.
Here’s the link to my info: https://flurrysports.org/Packers-attempted-Aaron-Rodgers-trade-for-justi....

Don’t know if it is true but if it is it explains a lot and doesn’t look good for Gute. Thanks, Since ‘61

If Rodgers retires, he will have to pay back tremendous amount of $millions and would also rescue the Packers cap. Ironically it could also lead to an extension for Adams.

Being out of the limelight would be abject torture for "Mr. Center of Attention."

I am convinced his Holly Dolly is in the middle of this manufactured dissatisfaction, expecially after winning the MVP and increasing his "value" and can drag along his huge contract with 3 years remaining to a new West Division team.

I haven't yet read other's comments on your article yet Ken. However, here is how you should have titled the article in my opinion:

Packer Fan's Should Be Jordan Love's Biggest Fans!

The Jordan Love era has begun whether fans want it to or not!

AR is completely disingenuous about the Love selection in last year's draft as you point out. Certainly he knows it highlighted the end to his Packer career and it pissed him off. However, we all know he has no one to blame but himself. He is difficult and arrogant, and he wants to make his own rules. My sincere hope is that maybe deep down Rodger's after watching Jordan Love all last season is also concerned with how talented Jordan Love really is. Fingers crossed!

It is also my sincere hope that if Rodger's comes back and does everything expected and required as a leader, as well as performing as his contract stipulates that he plays and then we trade him next March. If Rodger's is up to his usual games than I would simply bench him and take the financial hit. I certainly would NOT want to simply trade him for minimal resources. That would be entirely stupid on the FO part. Sit him and make it painful for AR because he is and always has been mainly about himself. He image and his stats have always been of great importance. The end of his career whether 3 or 4 years from now, or 5 or 6 years from now is rapidly coming. At the very end, he wants to post the most amazing stats and this is why unless the Packers blink first I truly believe AR will be the starting QB in 2021. Obviously the money is important but AR could sit with the hope of being traded. However, it is the lost stats that would bother AR the most.

GB fans will be surprised how well they do without Erin. These same packer fans that are horrified if Rodgers is not their are probably the same ones that thought they needed a WR last year. This team has a top 10 defense, Great OL ranked 2 in NFL, very good TE and WR group, best RB duo in NFL. If Love can play clean this team will win the North and do well in playoffs.

#Packers QB Aaron Rodgers has indicated to people close to him that he does plan to play for GB this season, sources say. That is the expectation. Many factors at play, but with GM Brian Gutekunst saying he is “hopeful” for a positive outcome, there is a glimmer of optimism.

I certainly appreciated the comments and especially the humor. I need that with all this covid uncertainty and now this annoying drama right before my favorite times of the year. Summer is in full bloom and the start of Packer training camp where I get reports on how some new and veteran players are progressing on a team that is deserving of their time in Packer lore. PLEASE let's work together for the safety of all, get vaccinated!!!

I am looking forward to TC more so than in many years. I am less and less interested in Rodgers and am really pulling for Love and the entire Team.

Packers have a lot of exciting talent and a seemingly exceptional coaching staff, especially on Offense. Love is going to get a lot of help from talented team mates and coaches. He has been labeled as very coachable.

Yes, we can slide over as there is plenty of room for more.

While news seem to indicate AR is coming back much can happen between now and Game 1. Plus, it is a very long season!

Meanwhile, reports are out that ARod told teammates he plans to play for the Packers.

Please wake me when someone has actual information. Until then..... zzzzzzzzzzz.

After reading many of the comments I get the sense we're all exhausted by the dark cloud over Lambeau Filed and want some finality one way or another, I know I do. Thankful I have the Olympics to watch for the next two weeks and forget about this nonsense for awhile.

ARod is going to play for the super bowl, with the most talent loaded packer team. Let's just say GB wins this year. Is both Rogers and Adams going to want to leave? ZaDarius has been belly aching lately.. Is he going to be complaining if GB wins? Then the next season still be considered a top contender? Let's just say GB trades AROD during the 2022 break, and gets enough monies to pay Jaire Alexander, and get x number of first round draft choices. To improve the team even more...
