Romeo Doubs and Samori Toure Give the Green Bay Packers Reasons for Hope

The Green Bay Packers receiving corps has been a problem throughout this season. They entered the 2022 NFL campaign with a lot of question marks and injuries have made things tougher for the unit which has struggled all year.

The Packers started the season without Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, two of their top three wideouts from a year ago. Then injuries hit Allen Lazard, Christian Watson, Randall Cobb and Sammy Watkins during the first eight games. That left an already questionable receiving corps even more shorthanded and forced to rely on rookies and inexperienced players.

The results were predictable. Aaron Rodgers hadn’t developed trust with his inexperienced receivers and the Packers passing game suffered. The struggles of the offensive line and questions about play calling and disappointing quarterback play were also factors in the subpar passing game which is presently ranked 20th in the league in passing yards per game.

But in last week’s game against the Buffalo Bills, rookie receivers Romeo Doubs and Samori Toure gave the team some reasons for optimism at the position.

Doubs finished the game with four catches for 62 yards and a touchdown. The scoring play was an outstanding grab from 19 yards out. Doubs came in motion across the formation and then headed down the right side. He was originally turned to the right side, twisted his body around to the left side and then back to the right before beating man coverage and getting both feet in bounds.

He made a second outstanding catch on the left sideline that helped set up the Packers final touchdown. He ran down the left sideline and outleaped the defender and got both feet in bounds on a 26-yard gain.

“Romeo made some unbelievable plays in this game,” head coach Matt LaFleur said after the game.

Doubs presently leads all Packers wide receivers with 30 catches. Like most rookies, he has been inconsistent. Some games, Doubs has looked like he could be a solid starter in this league like he did against the Bills. But just the previous week against the Commanders, he had no catches on four targets and struggled to make an impact.

Through eight games, Doubs has a catch percentage of 61.2. He is learning how to make adjustments when plays break down and to get on the same page as his quarterback. Doubs has always had a strong work ethic and has worked hard to learn the playbook. Now he needs to learn how to read plays the same way as his quarterback when the original call breaks down.

Doubs is ahead of seventh round pick Samori Toure. The Nebraska alum sat out the first six games of the season as an inactive player. When injuries hit, he saw his first action against the Commanders and made his first career NFL catch in that game.

Against the Bills, Toure caught his first career touchdown pass, a 37-yard play that was impressive not just because it was a rare long gain through the air, but for the way the play developed and Toure reacted.

Toure started on the right side of the formation, faked out his defender at the line of scrimmage and headed downfield towards the middle of the field. As Rodgers scrambled to avoid the rush, Toure changed directions not once but twice to help his quarterback while running further down the field. Rodgers found him in the middle of the end zone behind the defensive backs for a touchdown.

It will take more time for the Packers rookie receivers to become more consistent. But what we saw last Sunday against the Bills was glimpses of the potential they have and what they can consistently become in the future.

Last month, Rodgers acknowledged the talent the Packers rookie receivers have. “It’s going to be, how does their confidence progress, how many plays can they lock in and anchor into their mind…How many memories can they lock into their brain that they can easily access in the moment? And how do they work on their craft? Big jumps, opportunities for them between years one and two and years two and three, especially, that we see from a lot of young players. But I think they both have opportunities to be really, really good players in the league.”

Now it’s a question of having them go out and do it consistently and whether they can be part of the necessary improvement of the Green Bay passing offense in the second half of this season.

If we had a viable strategy from the HC and or Rodgers, the summer would all have been about time with the rookies and Rodgers. If we paid attention to camp, Doubs snd Toure would have been the first up and active. If we actually backed them and the old guard, we’d have called plays that included routes beyond ten yards and involved more than just beat your man in traffic or isolation. It may not have been ideal, but it might have worked and with over 40 percent of the season gone, it’s a bit late now.

Barry tightly gets criticized for a lack of perception, aggression and innovation. LaFleur is, if anything, worse.

I suppose I'm just too logical, analytical whatever, but I would have thought that the plan from day one would have been. Let's get the new players acclimated with the departure of Adams, while we lean more on Aaron Jones and see even Dillon in the passing game. MLF to some degree always had to defer to Rodgers and this is what we ended up with.

Like Lphill below it's a moot point without an O-line to even try. This can all get started now 40% later (CW) IF the line can stay healthy and practice together with a successful running game.

Sell it Gil baby, sell it.

Now that the Sammy Watkins will have a renaissance in Green Bay snake oil has worn off it is time to sell the gullible masses that rookie 4th and 7th round WRs are the cures for what ails the Pack's passing game.

What comes next, Tyler Davis to the rescue? Juwann Winfree? Travis Fulgham?

I never said these two were the cure for what ails the Packers passing game. I just said they were showing some signs of progress in adjusting to life with Rodgers and they are showing flashes of their potential. Rookies take time and with the way Rodgers is, he takes longer to trust young receivers than most QBs. Not trying to sell either of these guys as saviors, but since the Packers do need them to play better, I thought I'd highlight some positive signs. Thanks for commenting, KenEllis.

My bad Gil, I misinterpreted the portion of your post stating "in last week’s game against the Buffalo Bills, rookie receivers Romeo Doubs and Samori Toure gave the team some reasons for optimism at the position" as meaning that Packer fans have reason to be hopeful that these two late round rookies might "be part of the necessary improvement of the Green Bay passing offense in the second half of THIS SEASON."

I guess it is the fact your post is entitled "Romeo Doubs AND Samori Toure GIVE THE PACKERS REASONS FOR HOPE" that thew me off.

Glad to hear you are not "trying to sell either of these guys as saviors," because that would be unfair to both Doubs and Toure given their unremarkable pedigree and inexperience and to Packer fans who might otherwise be duped into believing that help for the pathetic passing attack is just around the corner.

I'd agree that contending the Doubs/Toure combo is going to materially improve the Packer passing attack THIS SEASON would be about as disingenuous as proclaiming, prior to the start of the season, that the Sammy Watkins signing made a lot of sense for the Packers.

And we know that never happened.

It's all good, KenEllis. I am rooting for these two guys and I hope they have bright futures. Unfortunately, what happened at WR this season was hardly a shock. I'm so disappointed by the way this season has gone down so far. Thanks for commenting, always great to discuss my articles with readers and fellow Packers fans.

As ALWAYS CW...spot on!

No upside here on out not playing Doubs, Toure, Watson, and Amari extensively. Unless it is Lazard the rest of the WR's need to set. Cobb and Watkins gone after this year. I like Tonyan and think he has a good future ahead. I hope the Packers resign him but if they are not I'd like to see him rotating heavily with Davis for experience.

I also would take a long look at RB too. Yes, the RB's who are almost the only real positive on that side of the ball. Integrate Goodson and Hill and lets experiment and see what we have. Taylor is a good back but he is what he is even if he cleared waivers.

OL...I'm sorry but I just don't see upside to giving Bachtiari playing time. Sit him! Should Jenkins or Tom be playing LT?

Oh, yea...let's not forget Jordan Love. He was there at OTA's, and preseason. He should be in synch with the young WR's. He has young wheels to get away from pressure.

Let's give our future playing time and experience. Gutey....don't want to see you up in the box during games. I want you on the road Scouting as we will have a top 5 or 10 pick in 2023 and we cannot screw it up. Play Love and lets see if he has what it takes, otherwise trade him next offseason with our top pick for a QB.

The upside to playing Bakhtiari is having someone who can block effectively and consistently on the left side of the line. They need more guys like that for their offense to function.

Yet the left tackle position hadn’t really been a problem at any time other than when we inexplicably messed the whole line up on the Championship game. It’s right tackle that’s been the issue.

More of an o line problem than talent level of receivers , Rodgers seems to be under pressure on every passing down and just can’t get his timing down.

I am in the minority when it comes to those who feel it’s Matt’s fault for struggles on offense. Of course I like the run game doing ok but the key to scoring points comes from having a great pass game. Imagine if there was a great pass game and the running game keeps setting things up. I agree with the article that having the receivers play well is key. I believe that if the offensive line does well and the receivers get open and catch more often then the whole team will play better.

Too bad but, he didn't play there too long. Yah, I noticed that. He was talking about Douds then switched to Toure and I bet he was going too fast, or he clicked on his spell check. I can relate.

Doubs has 30 catches?!!!

If the stat sheet didn't confirm this, I wouldn't have been surprised to read he only had 20. I mean, they look invisible every game. Still, 30 isn't anything to get excited about when he is expected to be the #1 guy, since Lazard, Cobb, or Watkins assuredly aren't, and Watson being the new #1 MIA candidate in or out of the game. Lots needs to happen before any idolatry is bestowed, like in preseason.

Like to see the stats guys research once again and post the most receptions, yards, and TD's for a Packer rookie WR. Let's keep track where Doubs is for rest of season. At least something fun to watch.

Perspective. Toure made a great move on the third string safety. The Bills were missing their three top defensive backs in that game. Second, Doubs has issues catching the ball and or holding on to it after being hit. He made Two count them two, very nice passes, that in game 8 by the way so lets not raise the flag our passing game is back just yet.
Remeber, 31 other teams also assessed these guys and passed. Toure was passed over 6 times and Doubs three.
Your not going to get your best receivers from round 4 and 7 not matter what Gutt thinks.

Perspective.
Yours here is one that I stood on for years, but it only counts when allowed as excuse for a Packer loss, usually followed with you play with who you got. Though the last part is again flipped with a Packer win and the opponent's loss.

Any exuberance for the TD passes last week could easily be extinguished, or enjoyed longer against a horrible defense of Detroit. Neither will increase the chances for this team's season ending disappointment, coming slowly but surely over the next 4-5 weeks. Anything less than 3-4 closes the door, but a 1-4 opens the door to a top 10 at least draft spot. Hmm, what would benefit this team more for the future, which begins, now?

Depends on who's doing the draft. Haven't got a great success record. .250-.375 is pretty good in baseball though. Maybe Gut can take over for Stern.

"Depends" reminds me of another one of those 70s-80s jokes.

Might be worth researching where Tom Brady, Joe Montana, or a Bart Starr was drafted. For that matter even Favre & Rodgers....lets even toss in Adam's at WR?

"Snot", for the record;

Brady..........6th round
Montana....3rd round
Starr............17th round
Favre...........2nd round
Rodgers......1st round
Adams........2nd round

And, I'll add Donald Driver...7th round

He didn’t make a move on a third string safety at all. He read the field and the play and settled in space by instinct. Totally different and much more valuable and rare in a rookie.

As to the rest, good players are good players regardless of where picked. There’s less likelihood of finding a mainstay on the third day, but Bakh isn’t bad, nor is Jones, not was Driver or some ass named Brady. I don’t suppose it that matters Tonyan, Lazard and Nijman weren’t even drafted.

Kudos Coldworld,
I'm likely a bit older than you, so here's a few other Packers that were UDFAs; Wood is in the HOF, all were great contributors for the Pack

John Kuhn FB, Cullen Jenkins DL, Tramon Williams DB, Ryan Grant RB,
Ed West TE, George Koonce LB, Mark Murphy DB, Jarret Bush DB,
Johnnie Gray DB, Paul Coffman TE, Willie Wood DB, HOF!

And, while never Packers, you gotta' mention Warren Moon and John Randle.

I think I'm also in the minority that I actually think k Lafluer is a good Head Coach but has a major major flaw.

He absolutely should have no input into hiring a defensive staff. Joe Berry is basically causing a revolt in the locker room.

This defense may be one of the great let downs in packer history. Yes some players like savage have fallen off a cliff. Im just seeing a bunch a guys on defense who have put berry aside and don't care anymore about his useless schemes. This yr easy about the defense carrying them until the offense could somewhat be capable. Swing and a miss

They don't just give them hope. They give them Cap relief. The Market value of Lazard is 11.1 mil. And Cobb and Wilkins both won't be packers if they even try for 1/2 that. I say Clay pool was never going to be a Packer.
Next: Gutey knows he has to draft TEs, like he did the WRs. And saved his picks for the TE position. Tonyan's market value is 9.3 mil. Lewis won't be getting 3. And Davis won't be here next year. Expect more Deguara.!!
Next. Jenkins is out of here with a market value; of 13.9 mil.
And if you consider Lowrey, Amos, And the option for Savage. Gutey's draft won't be BPA.
