The Compelling Storylines Of Green Bay's 2024 Schedule

It's time to spotlight five intriguing Packers games of the 2024 season, from a storyline perspective.

The 2024 Green Bay Packers season features intriguing matchups, including the NFL's first-ever game in South America, a rematch of the 2023 Divisional Round, and the first Packers vs Bears of the Caleb Williams era in Chicago.

Let's dive into five narrative-rich Packers games of 2024:

1- Packers @ Eagles (São Paulo Game - Week 1)

Two years ago, the Packers played their first regular season game outside of the United States. Green Bay gave up a home game to travel to London, where they faced the New York Giants and ultimately lost 27-22.

In 2024, the Packers will be the away team while the Eagles play at home in Brazil. Despite this, the game is unlikely to feel like a traditional Eagles home game. Last year, the official NFL Brazil account on X conducted a survey on the biggest NFL fan bases in Brazil, with the Packers claiming the top spot with 12.25% of the votes. While fans from all 32 teams will attend, expecting a full pro-Packers crowd may be unrealistic. Nevertheless, the game has potential to feel more like a Packers home game than an Eagles one. Green Bay fans from across Brazil, including myself, will travel to São Paulo for the game.

Philadelphia offers a tough Week 1 test for Jeff Hafley and Green Bay's defense. The Eagles have maintained a top 5 offensive line in both pass-blocking and run-blocking over the past two seasons, according to Pro Football Focus. Adding to their offensive strength, Philadelphia signed Saquon Barkley in free agency, who had over 100 yards from scrimmage against the Packers in London in 2022. Additionally, with AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith forming an elite wide receiver duo, the Packers will need to be at their best to contain Nick Sirianni's offense. This matchup also features a duel between two quarterbacks from the 2020 draft class: Jordan Love and Jalen Hurts. Love holds a 1-0 record as a starter against quarterbacks drafted in 2020, securing a victory against Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers last season.

2- Texans @ Packers (Week 7)

Week 7 brings a highly anticipated showdown to Green Bay as CJ Stroud visits, setting the stage for a clash between two quarterbacks who made waves in 2023. There's been no shortage of online buzz comparing Love and Stroud, debating which QB is the better long-term investment. Both have shown they have what it takes to lead their teams to greatness over the next decade. It's surprising this game isn't in primetime, given the exciting potential of both teams, bolstered by strong offensive and defensive minds. DeMeco Ryans' defense notably held Green Bay's offense to just 10 points in the 2021 divisional round, ensuring a tough challenge for Jordan Love and his crew on October 20th.

3- Lions @ Packers (Week 9)

Last year, the Lions visited Lambeau Field for Thursday Night Football and defeated the Packers 34-20. Despite Rudy Ford's interception in Detroit's first drive, Green Bay's defense struggled to contain the Lions' offense, which rushed for 211 yards that evening. The Packers' offense struggled to get anything going in the first half but found a rhythm in the second, though it wasn't sufficient to keep pace with Dan Campbell's team.

Green Bay must set the tone this year, especially after Amon-Ra St. Brown mocked Packers fans in the stands at Lambeau last season. Both Green Bay and Detroit have top 10 odds to win the Super Bowl in 2024 and are expected to compete for the division title. The Packers need to establish dominance heading into their Thursday Night Football clash against Detroit later in the season and ensure they don't allow a division rival to walk into their home and dictate the game.

4- Packers @ Bears (Week 11)

In Week 11, the Packers will travel to Chicago for what marks the first Packers vs Bears of the Caleb Williams era. Since 2008, Green Bay has a 27-5 record against Chicago. The Bears are 2-18 versus the Packers in the last decade, and their last victory over Green Bay came in 2018.

Once again, Bears fans believe they may have finally found their franchise savior in Caleb Williams—and they could be right this time. Williams showcased immense talent at USC, he has excellent arm strength and pocket awareness, qualities that made him the unquestionable number one overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Chicago has surrounded him with solid options like DJ Moore and Keenan Allen in the receiving corps. The Packers have consistently bested the Bears time and time again, and they should absolutely not fear Chicago until the Bears prove they can beat them.

5- 49ers @ Packers (Week 12)

It's a 2023 divisional round rematch. Back in January, the 7th-seeded Green Bay Packers had the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers in check for 58 minutes. The Packers' offensive line held strong, not allowing a single sack against Nick Bosa and Chase Young. However, the defense missed two easy Brock Purdy interceptions that would have given the offense a starting position on the 49ers' side of the field. Additionally, Anders Carlson missed a crucial field goal that would have put the Packers up by seven points with less than half of the fourth quarter remaining.

In November, the game will be played at a frigid Lambeau Field. A palpable rivalry has developed between the two franchises, fueled by multiple postseason meetings over the last decade. The 49ers have had the Packers' number in recent postseason memory. However, Green Bay won four out of their last five regular season games against San Francisco. This showdown holds significant weight as it could potentially determine the number one seed in the NFC.

Green Bay's schedule features several other interesting games. In Week 5, the Packers will travel to Los Angeles to face the Rams. Matt LaFleur has a 4-0 record against Sean McVay, though all previous encounters occurred at Lambeau Field. On Thanksgiving, Green Bay will take on Miami, with both teams led by coaches from the Mike Shanahan coaching tree. The cold weather in Lambeau should give the Packers a significant advantage in this meeting. Additionally, on December 15, Green Bay heads to Seattle for a Sunday Night Football showdown against the Seahawks. The last time the Packers defeated the Seahawks in Seattle, Aaron Rodgers was in his first year as a starter for Green Bay. The Packers will host the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football in Week 16. Last year, Jordan Love erased a 17-0 fourth-quarter deficit against the Saints and led the Packers to a win in his first career start at Lambeau. Moreover, Green Bay's schedule includes a Week 17 contest against the Minnesota Vikings, once again played in Minnesota. This game could mark the first time the Packers face off against JJ McCarthy.

The Packers' schedule is filled with intriguing storylines, each adding a layer of competition among players and coaches, from facing familiar foes in the division to challenging matchups against powerhouse teams. Matt LaFleur and his team will aim o maintain a winning momentum throughout the year, making victory a consistent theme for the 2024 Green Bay Packers.

They're all going to be intriguing with new defensive schemes and a new defensive mindset, along two new starters at safety and one possibly at ILB. Also looking for Van Ness to make the proverbial second-year jump.

On offense we'll have two new running backs. We didn't have a 100-yard rusher until late in the season when A. Jones logged four in a row. I think we'll reach that plateau earlier if not with Jacobs, then with Lloyd's big breakaway potential.
