The Curious Case of Paul Zimmerman

I have long read Dr. Z over at CNNSI. Even through his hardly-disguised Favre-hating, I have always respected his opinion as someone who has seen more football than most of us ever will and has no doubt forgotten more about the game than you and I put together will ever know.

However.

His latest column is a farce, at least the latter portion pertaining to the Packers. (I happen to agree with what he's saying about the Bills, but that's another matter...) The learned doctor gives us the following:

During the intermission you're supposed to make adjustments. OK, they're gonna stop the run now, so here's what we'll do. What the Packers did in the second half was run the ball into the heart of the defense, like mindless idiots, and then throw the short checkdown on third down.

"Mindless idiots"? Really? That's just lazy writing. Let's not take into account that the starting center was out. Or that the Bears were playing nothing but Cover-2, begging the Packers to run the ball. Or that the guards couldn't start, much less finish a single block. Or that the Packers started inside their own 15 yard line more often than not. Or that the Packers offense ran one, ONE, rushing play in the 4th Quarter. No no, let's just call the coaching staff "mindless idiots" and meet our deadline.

Dr. Z, you were once better than this.
