The Four Agreements From Week 5
Looking back on what went right (very little), what went wrong (quite a bit), and scrambling desperately to find four things Packer fans worldwide can agree upon in the afterglow of last Sunday's disastrous loss to the New York Giants.

London Called. Too bad the Packers didn't answer. Some losses suck worse than others. This loss was especially obnoxious. I don't know if it was waking up an hour before the sun to watch the game. Or the fact that Green Bay sacrificed an actual home game in the hallowed halls of Lambeau Field to make this trip abroad happen. Or, perhaps, it was the fact that the team never mentally got off the plane. Whatever the reason, this loss is going to stick in the ribs for a bit. Let's jump into the wrong side of the car and drive through the wreckage of this game (on the left side of the road, of course), and see if we can find four aspects of this game that Packers fans worldwide can agree upon.
- Agreement #1--Can we all agree that the Barry Has Gone Rotten?
Is anybody starting to wonder if Sean McVay foisted Joe Barry onto Green Bay? Listen, we could highlight specific players that did not cover themselves in glory across the pond, but, at the end of the day, we all know how talented this defense is. Seven first round draft picks. Huge salary cap hits. Pelts on the wall. No, sir. Talent is not the issue. Green Bay's scheme is awful. And Joe Barry is it's architect.
You may have noticed the Packers getting absolutely flambeed by crossing routes on Sunday. Your eyes were not deceiving you, dear reader. And, it wasn't just a one-week issue either. Fun fact--Green Bay has allowed a 134.3 passer rating this season on plays that feature a crossing route, when the Packers are in zone coverage. How often are we in zone coverage, you ask? All the effing time!!! The Packers have played zone on nearly 3/4 of our defensive snaps this season. Jaire Alexander. Eric Stokes. Rasul Douglas. Players whose abilities in man coverage give opposing offensive coordinators chronic acid reflux reduced to spending 75% of their time in some feckless zone. Like giving a Lamborghini to a guy with no legs.
And, it isn't just his propensity for zone that is weakening our defensive efforts. The predictability of Barry's patterns is laughable. Rashan Gary and Preston Smith have rushed on 9 out of every 10 plays this season. Conversely, Quay Walker has rushed on about 15 percent of his snaps this season. DeVondre Campbell has rushed on 4 percent of his snaps. 4 FREAKING PERCENT. Our defensive backfield blitz percentages are even more expected. Opposing offenses not only know who is going to blitz, but they have a pretty good idea of when they are going to blitz, and exactly where they are going to blitz from. Joe Barry's playcalling is essentially turning this unbelievably talented defensive unit into the guy at an orgy who just sits in the corner and watches. And, everybody is creeped out by that guy. (Editor's Note--I have never been to an orgy. I am just guessing. As previously stated, I live in Utah--orgies are illegal in Utah. As are beers with more than 3.4% alcohol, holding hands before a fifth date, and the surname Lance. Just wanted to clear that up.)
Now, I saw a lot of Packers faithful calling for Joe Barry's job on Sunday night. Hell, the line of people wanting to push Joe out of the plane mid-flight was about as long as the queue to bid farewell to Queen Elizabeth. I think we need to be a little more creative than that. I suggest maybe moving Barry up to the box and having him relay play calls to Jerry Gray on the field. At which point, Jerry Gray can call in the exact opposite play. Couldn't hurt?
- Agreement #2--Can we all agree that Matt LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers must be huge fans of John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt?
Second verse, same as the first, folks. I honestly can't believe we are back here again. Stop me if you have heard this one before--In another tight game, Matt LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers opted to relegate Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon to 20 or fewer carries, despite averaging nearly 5 yards per carry, to focus on low percentage deep shots and forced passes into double coverage. Just like the Vikings loss, LaFleur and Rodgers eschewed the convenience and consistency of leaning on two of the premium backs in the NFL, to try and earn their superhero merit badges. Jones and Dillon were allowed 19 total carries against the Giants. Good for 97 yards. Seven of those carries came in the second half. None of those carries came from the two yard line with the game in the balance. AJ Dillon, a man whose biological father is an army-issued Humvee, was denied a single carry from the six-yard line in lieu of two awful Aaron Rodgers routes. Good stuff.
After the game, LaFleur and Rodgers were questioned about this, and, per the usual, they both said the right stuff. And, I guarantee they invest a couple dozen carries into Jones and Dillon this week. Predictably, Jones and Dillon will put up solid numbers like they always do, and Green Bay will win an unnecessarily close game against a pretty bad Jets team (Jones and Dillon can't call defense plays, after all). I just don't understand why there is this mental block with LaFleur and Rodgers when it comes to committing fully to the running game. AJ and Aaron are probably your second and third-best players on offense. Why not treat them as such? Instead, LaFleur treats our running game like billionaires treat giving to charity. He only acquiesces once he is publicly shamed. Jones and Dillon are Clark Griswold's Christmas bonus. And, the low percentage deep shot heaves that LaFleur and Rodgers insist upon are the jelly of the month club.
- Agreement #3--Can we agree that analytics are making smart people stupid?
Matt LaFleur's press conference on Monday was an absolute doozy. Matt generally has two modes--Calm, cool, and collected or contrite and accepting. Not on Monday. Matt was salty. I mean salty AF. Saltier than McDonald's fries back in the 1990's. One of the items he kept being asked about and pushing back upon was how foolish the idea of running on an eight-man box was. I am sure the analytics agrees. If teams load the box, it probably makes more statistical sense to throw. But, what does the GAME say? Hindsight is 20/20, but, watching that last play from scrimmage, it sure looks like AJ Dillon would have walked into the end zone for a game-tying touchdown. Inconceivable, I know, because the analytics would never steer us wrong, right?
When did we start treating analytics like it was this all-knowing Voice of God? It was analytics that had the Las Vegas Raiders going for an ill-fated two-point conversion against the Chiefs on Monday night, as well. Spoiler alert--It didn't work out great for the Raiders. Time and time again, coaches hide behind calls they made pointing to "just following" what the analytics told them to do. Hell, if we are going to just abide by analytics, why do we even need coaches? Just hire IBM Watson as your next head coach. Can you imagine Bill Parcells relying on a computer's advice, instead of his own hard-earned and accumulated knowledge of the game? I wonder what analytics would have told Bill Belichick to do on the goal line against Seattle in Super Bowl 49? Now, I am not old to the point that I am scared of computers and think analytics are a big ol' pile of bullshit. I am 40. I have been around computers my entire life. And, I agree that analytics can be a useful tool, when used in moderation. Kinda like Baccardi 151. All I am saying is that some of these coaches would be better served relying upon their instincts, rather than a computer who does not give a damn who wins.
- Agreement #4--Can we agree that the Packers seem to have a failure to communicate?
Joe Barry sucks. We already agree on that. And, in the two minutes it took you to get to this point in the article, Joe Barry has actually gotten even suckier (that's how being eternally sucky works). We previously pointed out his playcalling foibles. But, one of the underreported failures coming out of this Giants loss was Green Bay's complete communicative breakdown on defense. The worst offender--DeVondre Campbell. Multiple times on Sunday, Campbell was caught handing off routes to teammates that weren't ready, nor properly equipped to handle such a task. It was evident on the Saquon Barkley crossing route (effing crossing routes). It was evident on the pass to Richie James. Against the Giants, DeVondre looked about as lost as your first pair of AirPods. It was bad. I started to wonder if he had bet on the Giants. And, I am talking money line, not spread. Good Grief, Darnell Savage even had to call him out a few times. And, having Darnell Savage call you out for blowing coverage is like having Keith Richards lecture you about sober living.
It wasn't just the on-field communication, either. After the game, Jaire Alexander mentioned that he would start getting nervous if the Packers lost next week's game to the Jets. This statement was relayed to Aaron Rodgers in his postgame press conference, and you could tell Captain Gratitude did not care for that comment one bit. He mentioned he had heard several players in the locker room talking negatively about next week's game, as well. This reeks of poor brand statement management. An unfocused message. And, Matt LaFleur needs to get ahold of this pony before it leaves the stable. Poor communication can sink an organization quickly. I think the reason this loss feels so jarring to us fans, as well as some of the folks in the locker room, is due to the fact that this is really the first signs of turbulence under the Matt LaFleur regime (btw, if you are calling for Matt LaFleur's job, you really need to take a trip outside and touch some grass--yeesh). Keep an eye on how LaFleur navigates this over the coming weeks. Pressure creates diamonds. Or dust. My guess is Matt will handle it as smooth as one of his eyebrows.
- Catching Strays
Aaron Rodgers and Matt LaFleur lost a game in which they led 17-3 to Daniel Jones playing on a bad ankle. Just say that out loud.
Brian Daboll looks like Alex Jones' younger brother who owns a modestly successful trucking company and occasionally gets into needlessly messy Facebook fights with his ex-wife.
The NFL Network played the Eric Church song "Drink In My Hand" as a commercial bumper in the first quarter. It was 7:53 am where I live.

In my view, a lot of the problem with the Packers is that the organization has been quite convinced it’s right for so long it no longer looks outside itself for wisdom and perspective.

They see them. They saw mo Drayton last year, and let the ship sink anyway.. the GM and coach don’t have the whatever it is to make real changes. We’ll just hire Joe Barry and see how that goes.
I live in NYS.. it was said for years the Giants were fine with losing because the seats were filled.. then they got some no shows and bill parcels was hired and changed everything.
Fans own the Packers and the seats are filled.. we are lucky to at least have winning seasons I guess.

There are a lot of ostrich's both in this article and in many of the comments - head in the sand for sure.
First hard to run the ball when the Oline doesnt block and open holes - the only guy blocking consistently is the oldest guy along the line - Mercedes.
Secondly - it is hard to pass the ball - even short passes if the Oline cant block and the QB has to throw the ball around and through outstretched arm from 3 feet away or from laying on his back or running for his life.
Thirdly - one can play off but one still needs to close and tackle and yes Barry needs to have the best D backs supposedly tighten up the coverage - but what Douglas has done - 3 penalties for illegal contact or holding or PI -whatever - that is not tight coverage - that is cheating and it gives the other team a first down. Dumb Dumb Dumb - that is not what got you the contract.
And is Watson isnt available to provide those motion moves laterally along the scrimmage get somebody else in - why not try Amari. Dont know why he is banned from the O - I know that you can fumble or not return the ball on punts or kickoffs - but he hasnt really had a chance to screw up - what is the REAL reason - or is he just the whipping boy to show the new guys what might happen.

Hop on over to The Passing Chronicles and take a look at Rodgers' passing chart for the Giants game, and read what Dusty has to offer.
As far as the O line creating holes for 33 and 28, that happens when they're given the ball. Aaron Jones is averaging 6.3 yds per carry in 61 attempts, and Dillon 3.9 in 63 attempts.

When you get stuffed like Dillon has been and even Jones ( minus the big game) the Oline is not blocking well and then Lafleur gives up on the run . And I had read what Dusty offered and it proved my point - somebody in his face even on Deguara's and AR has to throw it quick and short - and he never knows where the pass rush is coming from. Until we fix the Oline - we will have issues. Take out 4 of Dillons long runs and he doesnt get a first down on 3 carries. Even Jones who can make something out of nothing - is getting stuffed a lot . Watch the games - the running game is not getting it done because they get stuffed - there was a bit of time when Dillon got a couple of consecutive first downs against the Giants but that has happened enough.

I agree, if we disregard runs past the LOS, 28 and 33 certainly are getting stuffed. 12 should know where the pressure is coming from, he can count and he won't call for the snap until the last second on most snaps.
Seems there is a lengthy list of things in need of fixing on this team, and that stems from incompetence at the top.

Can we all agree that for the defense to get any better the Packers need to FIRE JOE BARRY. There is no other explanation for how such a talented defense with such good potential is so bad at times. MLF (who I still, possibly a bit foolishly, believe in to turn this season around) needs to suck it up and show him the door. I am honestly hoping the Jets win next and scoring a ton of points because that’s the only thing I think that will do it.
I don’t think we’ll all agree on this, but I think the Packers should hire Mike Zimmer. His scheme is the exact opposite of Joe Barry’s: Man coverage, stop the run first, double A-gap linebacker blitzes - and he is someone who has actually had past success (think back to 2017 Vikings especially). Sure his defense was crappy last year, but aside from 2 players (Dalvin Tomlinson and Eric Kendricks), his entire personnel consisted of old veterans past their prime, oft-injured stars, or crappy/not very good players. He has been known for transforming terrible units into great ones very quickly; imagine what he could do with all of the Packers’ personnel at his disposal.
If Zimmer won’t come, they could always ask Vic Fangio too.

Everyone talks of firing Joe Barry. Don't forget who wanted him hired--MLF. Don't forget who the head coach is--MLF.
As MLF has said in the past--'the buck stops here'. He is the one responsible for how the defense is playing. Look at last year, Barry coached just fine with lesser talent because of the injury to Alexander and not having some of the current players on defense.
Is Barry to blame? Yes, to a certain extent, but MLF is the one in charge!

Finally, someone mentioned something about Sanchez! His announcing was absolutely awful. He painted Daniel Jones to be a future HOF-er after a third down play where he stepped up into the (clean) pocket without any pressure and threw the ball to a wide open receiver for a first down. He couldn't stop bragging about the Giants. He was extremely biased and you could clearly tell he had no interest in praising GB for anything.

Opposing coaching staffs have figured out that MLF has a offensive clipboard, but can't make the necessary adjustments if AR's bag of tools are not sharp. I'm quickly leaning toward dust for MLF. I hope the head cheerleader proves me wrong. GPG!

It's apparent that MLF's coaching acumen has come under increased scrutiny. However part of his inability to coach a complete game may be physiological. I have noticed that with a lead he seems to tighten - as if his sphincter muscle contracts - that in turn impairs his cognitive brain function. At the same time (with a lead) Rodgers unilaterally decides to play hero ball. This Coach-QB dynamic has invariably proven to be disastrous.

The recurring question for those of us fans who miss a lot of the intricacies of the game -- especially when the Packers play lesser teams -- is why does it look so easy for them to do this or that on the field, while the same thing looks so hard for us.
As an example, why can't the Packers complete more passes on crossing patterns? Against a man-to-man defense, it's hard for a linebacker, or even a defensive back, to stay with a receiver going across the field; against a zone defense, it's hard for one of these coverage guys to know exactly when a receiver runs into his zone or out of it -- or so it seems to me.
Plus, if you have our receivers crossing each other on crossing routes, it gets even more complicated and difficult for the defense. There's no need for the receivers to set illegal picks, because the coverage guys often get lost in the normal traffic of receivers going in different directions.
Also, the crossing receivers can clear out areas for a running back to slip into out of the backfield, or for a tight end who blocks for a second or two and then drifts into an open space.
Finally, all this would seem to help the Packers offense work the field from sideline to sideline -- to spread out the defense even if they are cheating up toward the line of scrimmage. That's not to ignore the long ball vertically, but to compliment it horizontally.
Am I missing something, or is it just that easy? I'm glad for input from more tactical fans, even corrections.
P.S. With some illusion of complexity before the snap, the defense would be even more befuddled, and scurrying to recover.

My observations is Rodgers has become increasingly risk averse over the years to throw to the middle portion of the field. It be nice to see his pass spray chart year-to-year to confirm that. And maybe some comparisons to other top QB's. Maybe someone at CHTV can dig that up.

I agree on your agreements! I doubt Barry gets fired in season but MLF is going to have to put on his big boy pants and hold his DC's feet to the fire. IMO, Barry's god awful scheme is the main culprit for all the Defensive woes. No pressure upfront (scheme) and DB's not playing up on WRs (scheme) are all on Barry, that's his philosophy and it isn't working. I don't care if you can run the 40 in 4.0 flat....if you give any NFL WR a 10-yard cushion on a crossing route, it's a recipe for disaster. How Barry has stuck with this defensive scheme....and why MLF has allowed it to continue game after game.....are questions that must be answered immediately.....

I concur on the Barry statement. Not being an NFL coach this is an assumption on my part, but I would like to think that coaches spend a lot of time working on things in the preseason, both with and without players, to get on the same page (successfully or not) and that bringing in a new top level coordinator mid-season would result in a lot of chaos. Last year with Mo Drayton everyone was calling for his head, but who are you going to replace him with? Now this year with the DC it is a little different as it sounds like from other comments here Zimmer is without a job and available. But I still don't see an NFL franchise, nonetheless the Packers, replacing a coach while having a winning season. Sure the Panthers just fired their head coach, but they were 1 and 4 and have an uber rich owner who can solely make those decisions. I appreciate the Packers for being an organization that is not prone to knee jerk decisions like that due to our ownership structure.

You are on the money.. the only thing not mentioned is the culture of ML teams . They cave easily.. they shrink against aggressive physical teams.. not good for an outdoor Midwest team.
Mercedes Lewis fumbled last year and it was ball game..eight minute drive for NYG, and ball game.
I can’t say it enough.. if Gutey hired Wink Martindale this team is really a contender. The Joe Barry hire guarantees that Rodgers last few years will be meaningless

I’m not obsessing over that game your obsessing. Why are you crying? I’m not crying you are crying… man that game hit different. It’s odd to be in a position this early in the year where if the Packers can’t right this ship they will be left in the dust of the Vikings of all things. Perhaps Green Bay trying to add the punctuation on to Aaron Rogers career and the future of this franchise is going to fall flat. It won’t be for a lack of trying. There is a lot of young talent, and the offense and defense can’t get any worse. The Special Teams is going to hold them accountable week in and week out. Let’s go onward and upward and run the offense. I don’t care if it’s Chad Pennington type ball. Stop losing patience. Stop taking so many deep shots. Run the ball, quick passes, and ease in the hero bullshit slowly because it isn’t working at all right now. Play more man defense. Throw the vanilla out and get some spicy shit going on. One interception and few pass break ups isn’t gonna work. Don’t reinvent the wheel. Just make a couple nice adjustments, and if it works don’t get bored until it stops working.

J Barry, Detroit 2007 - 2008 defense led by Barry was ranked last in the league for both points and yards allowed. During the 2015 and 2016 seasons, he served as Washington’s defensive coordinator. Barry’s defense was ranked 28th in yards allowed for both seasons while it was a slightly better 17th and 19th in points allowed respectively. When somebody shows you who they are believe them.
MLF, chokes in a clinch situation. Just look up his record. And that bonehead throw by AR on 3rd and two he hit the "Giant" in the facemask. GB has had a very sweet schedule the last 4 years and now they can't even deliver on that. No SB in the plans. The only Cheeseheads in AZ this year are going to be the snowbirds.

Agreement #5: The illusion of complexity has become the reality of stupidity!!!
Allegedly the Packers have an NFL level coaching staff. So we have 3rd and 2 at the Giants six yard line and we throw two passes that are batted down by the Giants DL! Duh!!! How can an alleged offensive genius not realize that those passes have a reasonably high chance of being batted down? That close to the end zone the defense knows that the QB can't throw a very high pass unless he is throwing out of the end zone. Maybe on a fade route to the corner the pass might be thrown a little higher. But other than that the passes need to be thrown pretty much on a line over the OL. Guess what? The DLs are coached to put their hands up in those situations. These are 6 foot plus guys who when they stretch their arms up become 10 foot paddles. How can our offense not know this???
The threat of a batted down pass doesn't happen when you run the ball!!! Especially with 2 downs to gains 2 yards. Does anyone see Holmgren or Lombardi making those calls or allowing those to be made? It's just stupid football. Better to try a pitch out to Jones running behind Lewis and Dillon. Let Lewis seal the inside and /dillon the out side and what we have is a "seam here and a seam there" and Jones runs between the seams for a first down at least. Or put Deguara in to block for Dillon. I just can't get this stupidity out of mind. It's ridiculous.
As for the defense I'm just out of words to comment on that side of the ball again concerning this game. We're up 17-3!!! Get aggressive!!! Go after the QB, at least force him to hurry his decisions and throws. What are we doing playing 8 plus yards off the LOS!?!?! Stupid, stupid football!!! and there is no excuse for it.

Time to pay for better assistant coaches. Look what happened when they hired a competent ST's coach- that group becomes the most consistent on the team. Instead of hiring second rate assistants, apparently to save money, how about spending some cash, getting first-rate coaches to teach/scheme for your plethora of first round, and highly paid players, and see if that improves the defense. Either that, or keep wasting time.
