The Lass Word: Jets Game Will Speak Volumes

Pack may or may not play better, but they dang well should play harder.

It may take several weeks to figure out if this Green Bay Packers team is any good.  But it will only take until this Sunday to see if they have any heart.

After an embarrassing loss to a depleted New York Giants club last Sunday, the franchise is taking a verbal brow beating from fans and media all over the country, and rightfully so.  Such criticism usually sends a team into one of two directions.  Either they completely lose confidence, fold up and mail it in for the rest of the year, or they get mad and take it out on their next opponent.  An opponent that just happens to be that other New York team, the Jets.

Much like the Giants, the Jets still have the reputation of being one of the worst teams in the league.  It’s a legacy well-earned through years of losing.   But, also like the Giants, the Jets are better than their reputation suggests.  Their offense ranks eleventh in points scored.  Green Bay is 22nd.  The Jets come into the game with the same exact record as the Packers at 3-2.  They have wins over the Browns, Steelers and Dolphins, and have won three of their last four.  Behind their young quarterback Zach Wilson, the former doormats are getting better every week.  They are loaded with young, emerging playmakers like Breese Hall and Garrett Wilson.  In short, they are probably more talented, and surely more healthy than the Giants.

Here’s the thing.  Sunday’s game should not be about how good the Jets are.  This game is about the Packers playing four quarters with emotion and fire.  This game should be about Green Bay putting the entire NFL on notice that rumors of their demise are premature.  There’s been a lot of criticism about play calling. I don’t feel qualified to scrutinize play calling. But I do know this: It doesn’t matter what play you call if the other team is playing with more passion and hustle.

Yes, they need to run the ball more.  They need to cut back on desperation long balls.  But in this game, it shouldn’t matter what Matt LaFleur calls, or what Aaron Rodgers decides to change at the line of scrimmage.  They should be angry enough, and focused enough, to dominate the line of scrimmage and correctly execute run and pass.

The defense should be getting a good ass-kicking by the coaches this week.  They had better take the field with smoke emerging from their nostrils.  Blockers should be knocked on their keesters.  Running backs should be stoned behind the line of scrimmage, and Wilson should be fleeing for his life on every drop back.  The Green Bay secondary should be making plays on the ball while covering and hitting with violent intentions.  If there is any pride in this bunch at all, if there is any real leadership in that locker room, if there is any strategic expertise in that coaching staff, we should see it this Sunday.  And we should see it from the opening kickoff to the kneel down at the end of the game.

If we don’t see it, if the Packers continue to struggle, it will speak volumes.  It will tell us that, not only does this team lack heart, but it’s talent level is greatly overrated.  If you lose to the Giants and the Jets back to back, then you don’t have the talent to beat the Eagles, Cowboys, Bills, Rams, Dolphins and Vikings down the road.  I don’t want to hear that this team is still finding itself.  Spare me the excuse that they will get better as the season goes on.  Are they better now than they were five weeks ago?  I don’t see it.  If they haven’t improved from the beginning of the season til now, why would they suddenly start improving at midseason?  Especially considering the schedule gets exponentially tougher.

There will be a packed house at Lambeau for kickoff.  As always, they will be psyched up to back their team.  But there will also be a waft of anxiety in the air.  The honeymoon is over.  If Green Bay comes out of the gate shaky and mistake prone, that crowd will be ready to rain down boos and jeers.  Nobody wants that.

As a lifelong fan, I am determined to believe that the likes of Marcedes Lewis, David Bakhtiari, Kenny Clark, Adrian Amos and other team leaders will take over in that locker room and get these guys ready to play.  By the time the fourth quarter clock ticks down to zero on Sunday, we should have a pretty good idea as to whether this team has it in them to compete.

Game Prediction:  Packers 35  Jets 14

Stars of the game:  Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon

Upset special of the week:  Commanders over Bears

Well said. I'd be happy with four COMPLETE QUARTERS of excellent play from both sides of the ball.

I concur! We have 6 first rounders on our defense! It's time for this defense to show up and dominate the game!

Yep.

And if Jaire is playing 15 yards off again while matched up against the Jets 16th round draft pick coming off last weeks ACL tear, maybe the GREEN & GOLD faithful can also let Joe Barry know how much they appreciate his coaching contributions this season.

I know fans of the Lions and the team now known as the Commanders hold old Joe near and dear for all he did for those franchises.

All of that intensity you mentioned would certainly be a welcome sight, especially on the defensive side of the ball. But it needs to be coupled with tighter coverage, varied methods of pressure, gap discipline, and the players having their assignments down. I'm not sure how many hard nuts there are on the Packers' coaching staff, so I'd be surprised if the players came out like fire-breathing dragons. I'll settle for four quarters of well-executed football.

It most certainly matters what plays MLF calls and what AR actually does. You would figure the Jets might want to load up the box, play a lot of man (they have two pretty good CBs), and not blitz too often--at least that seems to be what makes most sense on paper. So the big question, and what we all we be watching for, is will the MLF/AR duo be able to adjust to adversity should it arise, and will they be able to do it for more than a half? And can they play smart and be patient enough to rely on their strengths in key situations?

I think they've been lacking a fiery player on the field for years. Someone who plays hard and isn't afraid to get in other players faces when they are messing up. Daniels was kind of that guy for a couple years. Clark and Gary are too soft spoken for that role and you can't ask them to be someone they're not.

This is a veteran bunch. If they need someone to get in their faces to play better, then that's the problem.

I think it comes down to execution and turnovers. Wilson has thrown two picks in 57 attempts this year. He and Wentz will give them plenty of chances for turnovers. But if the sloppy play isn't cleaned up it will be another ugly win or worse. Need more communication among the coverage guys and overall sharper play by the offense.

The Packers are 5th in defense by yards but 11th in points and 9th in yards on offense but 22nd in points. The -3 turnover differential is big right now. Also, even though they are 2nd in the league vs the pass at 177 yards a game they have the worst passer rating given up by any team in the top 16. Better communication could lead to a noticeable difference fast on defense, assuming they remember to stop the run.

Breece Hall has the same number of targets as Doubs' this season and Michael Carter has 21, two more than Aaron Jones. It will be interesting to see how they defend the RBs in the pass game this week. Forcing them to stay in to block would be a good start.

Good take for Sunday, Ken.

Slight disagreement on the ass-kicking. I agree with it...but those being kicked should be the coaches.

That "fire breathing defense" took the field in London and played well. In the second half the Giants passed on possession after possession into a soft zone. And our 4 (only 4?!?) Packer D lineman ran out of gas.

Barry deserves the first size 10 work boot!

Barry gets the first one, but only to load up the second one for MLF, who allows barry to play soft. Nobody on the staff has stones. No leadership.
Yesterday, a poster talked about bringing Mike Zimmer in. He's exactly what we need, just keep him on defense.

Unfortunately, I don't agree. The team may play hard, and I think Matt LaFleur and the offense will bounce back, but Mike LaFleur, Matt's brother and the Jets' OC, is a smart dude. He will FULLY take advantage of Barry The Mule's inept defensive scheme. If a Giants team with an O-line that can't pass block and practice squad WRs can put up 27 points on our defense, Zach Wilson with Garrett Wilson, Elijah Moore, and Corey Davis are going to do even better - they scored 38 on the dolphins last week. The players may play hard, but if Barry The Mule can't put them in a position to succeed, Mike LF will predict his every move and work around it. I see a high scoring game, but I think Barry's stubbornness and blandness and general ineptitude help the Jets pull off the upset, 30-28.
This would end MLF's streak of never losing consecutive games as a HC and the Packers' home winning streak.
Hopefully, meaningful change (like firing Barry The Mule) comes about afterward.

I think we have enough other talent that the down years would be short. Clean out HC, DC and whoever else is locked into the current trance.
If we had traded ar12 before the extension, we'd be on the rise with an infusion of new talent and cap space.

I was hopeful this team might finally reach its peak this year but that hope is all but gone. Sadly i think the wheels are coming off. When things start spilling over into the media that usually means the locker room is lost. Lafleur has lost this team. The front office neutered its own head coach by caving to Rodgers' will and now the ship is sinking. I expect them to lose to the Jets and lose badly. Things are about to get worse.

That's an awfully big build-up for a game against the Jets, but I'm afraid Ken's right. I've never heard anyone say "never underestimate the heart of a team whose head coach leads sideline cheers."

High five for use of "dang well should" and "Keester" (keister for the Germans in the crowd), Ken. Let's hope our beloved Packers treat these goons from New York to a knuckle sandwich right in the kisser, and make them skedaddle!

Ken's article has some legit points. However, I disagree with the emphasis on fire and brimstone. What this team needs to do is execute.

The Giants and the Jets are trying to prove themselves as legitimate NFL organizations. You will not match their fire and intensity, you will silence their fire and intensity by executing the plays.

Be it on defense or offense, If you indeed are a Super Bowl contender, you do not need to expend unnecessary energy on proving how intense you are. You need to systematically destroy the will of your opponent with execution because you are the better team.

If you don't execute. those little puppies start to believe they are big dogs. That's what happened against the Giants IMHO.

I cannot see us putting up 35 points yet. But I will say, the verdict is out that Matt Lafleur is a nice guy; He is not Lombardi, Belichick, or Parcels. He does not have that fire in him to get hard on his quarterback or his coordinators. But I do believe Matt Lafleur is a man who will admit his mistakes and shortcomings. I feel that way about Joe Barry to an extent. Their humility will be sufficient to change things up. To coach differently. To trust in their team. To ignite pride in the locker room. I think losing to the Giants was a good thing for this team down the road this season. It is much better to have set backs early on and then figure things out versus figuring things out early on and having set backs later in the year when it matters.
I think this Packers team will figure out who they are and who they must be to win games. A PHYSICAL TEAM. A team that dominates and controls the line of scrimmage. Sure they may not be the most efficient offensively. Sure they may not have game breaking talent on the outside. But they are going to play with heart and pride. They may only win 10 or 11 games but this team will be a team you can hang your hat on knowing they lay it out there every given Sunday. It changes with this game. This team plays with toughness, authority, and aggression. This is the game when the Packers start playing Packers football. Domination. Physicality. Together. Smart Football. Every man.

Packers 24 Jets 13.

Ken, do you think if they comes out of the gate shaky and mistake prone, they do not deserve rain of down boos and jeers?

If that happen I would also like to see how crowd call Mike Murphy for all his mistake last 4 seasons and make Packers board to think about kicking his ass out of the organization or, at least, out of the position.

All of that are wet dreams.

I trully hope Packers will play at level to secure firm victory with diferential of at least 2 possesion. Still, it is hard for me to believe in that.

"They should be angry enough, and focused enough, to dominate the line of scrimmage and correctly execute run and pass."

Dominate the line of scrimmage and execute! This goes for the D too.

Yes, the Packers need to play with fire this week. Yes, they need to play much harder, but most importantly they need to play smarter football. Use the weapons the Packers have and execute on offense and defense.

This game will tell us plenty about this Packers team.
