The Lass Word: Keep Your Eye on Third Down Tonight

Money down has been a problem for Love.

Let the Summer of Love begin. All eyes will be on the Green Bay back-up quarterback tonight as he gets the start against the 49ers in the preseason opener. It’s probably a bit premature to say it’s “now or never” for the third year signal caller. He is pretty much locked in to the back-up job at least for this year, and likely next year as well, assuming Aaron Rodgers returns.

But if he ever dreams of being a bona fide starter in this league, let alone for the Packers, he has to make his move now. He has to start showing certain things. He’s not going to get a chance to show it once the regular season begins. He can’t count on Rodgers getting hurt. Despite aging into his late thirties, Rodgers has missed exactly one game in the last four years, and that was due to Covid, not injury.

Coaches, front office people and teammates continue to laud Love for things like his command of the huddle, his improved knowledge of the playbook, his poise under pressure. They insist he is better than he was last year. To demonstrate that, Love must show he can move the offense tonight against a team that, even if they don’t play their starters, always puts a tough defense on the field.

Most of all, he must show he can get the job done on third down. In the NFL, a quarterback makes his money on third down. When it’s third and long, and everybody in the stadium knows you’re going to throw the ball, and you know the defense is coming after you, can you calmly scan the field, find a guy, and make the accurate throw to move the chains?

That’s what separates the starters from the back-ups. Jordan Love has had just one opportunity to start and play a full regular season game. That was last year against the Chiefs in Kansas City. A tough situation to be thrust into for sure, but that’s precisely what a back-up QB has to be able to do; enter a game in critical situations against quality opposition and play winning football.

Really, if you just look at the stats from that Chiefs game, you might find it hard to figure out which team won. Love had more passing yards than Patrick Mahomes. He had the same number of touchdown throws (1). The Packers had more total yards. Green Bay also had a critical field goal blocked. The Packers defense kept the team in the game, and they had a chance late in the fourth quarter, but they couldn’t pull it off. The difference was on third down.

The game play-by-play tells the tale. Third and six from the GB 28, pass to Aaron Jones short left incomplete. Third and eight from the KC 22, short pass to Aaron Jones, incomplete. Third and twelve from the KC 25, pass to Davante Adams gains just six yards. Third and six from the GB 45, deep pass to Adams, incomplete. Third and five from the KC 38, pass to Adams, incomplete. Third and five from GB seventeen, Love fumbles and recovers it himself. Third and five from the GB 42, Love sacked. Third and three from the KC 43, Love throws too short to Adams. Third and ten from the KC 24, Love throws an interception

It was not until the team’s final possession that Love converted two third downs, one on a pass to Randall Cobb, and another on a toss to Aaron Jones. Love did throw a touchdown pass to Allen Lazard on fourth down. He finished 2-12 in third down conversions.

Mahomes wasn’t much better, but the backbreaker came with two minutes left in the game, KC leading 13-7, but facing a third and ten on the Green Bay 48 yard line. Mahomes dropped back, made a terrific scramble out of the pocket against heavy pressure, and accurately threw to Tyreek Hill for 13 yards and a first down. The Chiefs then knelt down the rest of the way, having run off the final five minutes, and held on to win. It was the kind of clutch third down conversion Love struggled to make the whole game. The kind of situation he must show he can execute beginning tonight.

Can you make excuses for Love’s performance at KC? Sure, and some of them are valid. He was under constant pressure, the game plan was questionable, the defense couldn’t make a stop late in the game to give him one more chance. But he has to start showing he can put the team on his back and overcome adversity.

Love also played the second half of the regular season finale against the Lions. I don’t put much stock in that game because he was surrounded by subs playing against the Lions’ starters. For what it’s worth, he went 3-7 on third downs in that game, but two of the conversions were running plays. He did convert twice on fourth down.

The former Utah State star has flashed enough potential to show he has the talent, but the Packers can’t sit on potential forever. Next spring the team has to decide whether to take the fifth year option on Love at a cost well over $20 million. Love likely has only these three preseason games to show he can, one day, start for somebody.

So when you watch the game tonight, judge for yourself whether he is new and improved. The best way to do that is to take note of what he does on third down.

Wow Ken! Those third down stats are almost unbelievable. At the time, I gave Love a break and felt that they didn't have a covid/injury game plan prepared in advance and practiced. Admiral Lord Nelson (of the British Navy) once said "you have to prepare for all the things that could happen, not what you think might happen".

Hopefully Love prepares and studies better and the Packers plan for him to play every week from now on.

To be fair, I'd like to see the actual plays cuz at least some of them weren't so much that Love was bad but rather extreme pressure in his face immediately.... and some he just failed....

hdguy, great point about sharing some context of the KC performance.
However, JLo had the deer in the headlights look the whole game. Jumpy feet, pre-planned throws, obvious physical and mental anxiety.
He was not ready for the moment.
With another year under his belt, all that has to be gone or he is done.
I'm rooting for his improvement as it directly relates to future success of the organization.
Today, I'd offer him a 4-year 30 million $ contract with not much guaranteed.
If he doesn't take it, DO NOT extend him. JMO
Can't wait to see the O-line and all new players.

I read this kind of piece with what I can only describe as increasing disdain. In Rodgers second preseason your criteria would have told us that he was a career back up. I think that says enough to put this in context as the melodrama it is.

Right now, I’m more focused on seeing if we can keep any QB upright at this point and going from there. If we can, I’m going to look to see more decisiveness, technique and decision making and which of the younger skill players look like they can make plays.

On D it’s pass rush and deep coverage. Lots of things to see that might actually make a real impact on our chances this season more directly. Frankly, I’m happy if we convert third downs by rushing. It’s not how but whether. In this game the most experienced skill players are likely Winfree, Davis (TE) and Rodgers. That too should put things in context for both Etling and Love.

The best thing that could come out of this game is no injuries and Tom or Newman holding up at RT well enough to suggest we have a viable short term option at RT. One could add Hanson at G. If we don’t and we have to play with this O line group, then Love may get more time behind center than any of us would desire.

I was thinking pretty much the same thing. How quick we are to forget this is Loves second preseason, not third. And I don’t believe Rodgers was a HOF QB even after he started his first couple of seasons either.

Still don’t like the Love pick but I’m really curious how this plays out over the next couple of years.

As much as I'm looking forward to Love playing will the OL hold up and give Love an adequate amount of time to perform?

I think Love will be fine. Especially so, if the O Line can protect him. As Coldworld said in his comments: "The best thing that could come out of this game is no injuries and Tom or Newman holding up at RT well enough to suggest we have a viable short term option at RT. One could add Hanson at G. If we don’t and we have to play with this O line group, then Love may get more time behind center than any of us would desire." I couldn't have said it better!

I think you've (and Coldworld've) hit the nail on the head: the OL will have a lot to say about how Love and the offense present themselves. The OL might very well be a mess tonight as the coaches test combos and look at fringe players. Hopefully Love shows a feel for pressure in the pocket, makes correct quick reads, and avoids injury. With so many WR sitting the bench tonight, it's not a formula for a glitzy showing.

Love will start behind a near rookie offensive line. Throw to backup receivers, hand off and get pass pro from third or fourth string RB’s. He will run a vanilla offense and face a tough Niners defense. I expect that they may figure that his weakness is a heavy pass rush and try that often. It. Don’t. Look. Good. BUT, if he can look halfway decent then the conversation changes.

Patrick, is SF’s back up defense tough? Unless, SF plays their starters on D I don’t think you could label that as a tough defense. They will also play a vanilla defense.

Over these next 3 pre-season games, Love needs to show he can perform at at high level. Regardless of backups, there still NFL quality type of players, this is Love’s big opportunity to show the NFL he has arrived and can lead a team of NFL players with successful drives.

Agreed Patrick!

Just hoping the OL at minimum is adequate to fairly evaluate Love. If the 49's do a repeat of what the Chiefs defense did to Love it is going to be difficult to truly evaluate Love.

I disagree because he has to show poise, the ability to quickly progress through the reads and OLine calls and he has to show confidence. That's on him, no matter who's protecting him or who's coming after him.
On top of all that, he has to make good decisions and be accurate with his throws.

Hard to do, in fact well nigh impossible, when you have no time behind a porous line, even for Rodgers. Let’s hope the line and particularly the right side gives us something to work behind.

That the offensive line tonight is a near rookie line is technically true. OTOH, if Bakh and Jenkins start on the PUP, this is it for the first 6+ weeks. Might as well find out how that looks if things don't go well. I suppose Tom, Newman, Hanson might fight things out, and perhaps though less likely, Van Laanen and Rhyan might make strides yet. I will be interested in Caleb Jones, though really just for a PS spot.

I think our top two are unavailable.

Runyan, Myers, and Newman forms a pretty respectable interior, and Hanson and Tom both look like they can help. I'd consider the interior line a strength of the Packers.

Nijman has done the job at LT, but other than that, I don't really see anyone.

I predicted that our starting Oline would be Nijman, Runyan, Myers, Rhyan, and Newman. Rhyan is going to be a miss, but the rest is pretty much on target. I don't see Caleb Jones as our starting RT on opening day, either. Van Lanen or Hanson could start. Tom has taken reps at tackle, and if Nijman gets hurt then he'll be our starting LT.

I've been wavering between Defcon 4 and Defcon 3 since the draft. Any bad news about OL injuries is going to have me back at Defcon 3.

I agree with you on LT Nijman, LG Runyon, C Myers, RG Newman but I’m not at all convinced that Newman or Tom are adequate at RT even as a stop gap. I truly hope that one of them dispels my concerns tonight or that Jones or CVL makes a strong case that they can. It’s nuts to be risking Rodgers in a few weeks and even Love unless someone does step up.

I've convinced myself that one or the other is going to be back soon. My reasoning is if they weren't Gutey would've made a move by now. If they have to I think they can get by parking Lewis on the right side of the line for a week or two but I think if Gutey thought that neither Bakhtiari or Jenkins was going to be back by week 3 they would have done something after the T signings the last 3 years.

If an exhibition game with mostly scrubs all around him is the measuring stick to make final decisions about him, I question the process in the NFL more than the abilities of a young (came out early) inexperienced (you know what has happened) QB.

Remember Kizer, Hundley and Scott Tolzein? All were touted as our next great, HOF QB. All the hype was based on their pre season performances. They were considered the MVP of the Packers preseason!!! Whoopee! And where are they now?

Preseason performances mean nothing. It is unfair to judge a QB based on their preseason play. We can only evaluate them fairly when they play in the games that count. The rest is just hype and speculation. The fact is that Love may never get that chance if Rodgers stays healthy and decides to continue to play for another 2-4 seasons.

I only want one result from tonight's game or any preseason game; NO New Injuries. That is a successful preseason game for me. The rest is irrelevant.
Thanks, Since '61

Preseason performances mean something if they're bad. If Love looks inaccurate or throws 3 interceptions against a vanilla defense it's fair to judge that performance. Otherwise you can look at his throws. Does he set his feet and throw with accuracy? Does he flee at the first sign of a rush? Those are things you can look at more than the score.

He had a game and half of film to dissect this offseason, hopefully it's obvious he did just that.

Hundley was a Day 3 project and Tolzien was a FA. Love is an investment by the organization of a first round selection that they traded up to get. The organization knew he wasn't going to play for a couple years but they believed he would improve during that time , so that he wouldn't look like Justin Fields. This is how the Packers organization rolls.

He'll play. He'll study the film with the coaches. He'll practice. He'll get stronger physically. When the organization needs him to play for us, he'll be ready

Agree on the no injuries stuff, of course.

WE all need to focus as others have intimated - that this is really Love's 2nd preseason from many aspects. I might call it 2+ preseason because of the first year in-season reps and practice squad although that year he was not even dressed as he was a back up to the back up. Now with his draft position and his supposed pedigree - what I want to see is his accuracy and his trajectory on his throws. It is imperative for him to put the ball even on the screens and crossing routes into the areas where catch and run is non- stop. Completed passes where the receiver has to stop and make the catch or gets crushed doesnt cut it. Swing passes out of the backfield and crossing routes can either lead to a big play or a tackle for a loss - or worse even an injury. All that being said - it depends on protection - but early identification and hitting the play in stride is all that I am looking for. Dropping a dime on a long pass is relatively easy when fast receivers beat their coverage - as these receivers can adjust pretty well. Even watching last night where these understudy QB's were throwing contested supposed backshoulder throws - wont cut it with No 1 Dbacks - just a knock down or an INT. Just throw the ball on a line and on target is all that I am looking for tonight ( and maybe a good disguise on the hand off and fake hand offs.

Those are the kinds of things I'm looking for too. You've summed it up well. I would add that moving around in the pocket, being aware of pressure, and scrambling when necessary, but only when necessary, are things to watch.

I remember AR's first couple of years and his performance in some pre-season games being erratic and not that great. But he was throwing the ball with authority which showed he had an arm but was still making some bad decisions. Things are slightly different now with Love and the 5th year option coming up, but still don't expect him to look like he's ready for Canton.

This is an unfair quote because it’s after his very first practice, but it actually sums up his first preseason and there were times in his second where he had the same issues. I think we forget how long his journey was and how unpromising it looked initially:

“At Rodgers’ first minicamp in June 2005, quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell told the Journal Sentinel the rookie “performed erratically” and was “overwhelmed by an onslaught of new information.” The rookie regularly under threw receivers, struggled against the blitz and abandoned deep passes in his first preseason.”

Focus on the rookies and younger roster bubble players and preseason will be much more rewarding.

I can't help but think that there was at least a bit of bias from Bevell when it came to Favre, IIRC. This is not to say Rodgers didn't have his issues, but salt, probably, needs to be on the table when taking what Bevell says in regard to Rodgers at that time.

Leading up to the KC game, LaFleur said he wanted to see what Love does when things go wrong. We could have dialed it down a notch to help him, but we didn’t. Then Love and the coaches studied the film.

They learned. He was better against Detroit in the finale. . He’ll be even better with an offseason and training camp I suspect he’s one of the better backups in the league and probably already as good or better than some starters.

I'm not saying that eyes shouldn't be on Love, but his place is set regardless of what he does or doesn't do in these 3 preseason games this year. He isn't going anywhere before this season is over. Yes, we would all like to get a reassurance that Love will be either good enough to keep as the future starter or good enough to get something for him if Rodgers makes it so by NOT retiring after this season, or at least offering HIS WORD that he will after next season, thus making the fifth year option a non-discussion.

This team, though many will argue, has much more to worry about than whether Love meets a standard that seems a slide rule depending on who is using it. A starting OL needs to be installed until the TWO return, or not, serious depth for multiple positions are in need, and without that being taken care of, Loves' play may not be a top 3 on the list of concerns going forward, as protecting Rodgers, getting him weapons, and insuring the defense has depth is what's needed to make this team a true SB contender with Rodgers, not Love.

Love isn’t going to win or lose us a Super Bowl at this point. The mess that Hanson/Newman/Tom have been at times might just do that before we make it to Bakh and Jenkins. Can they show that they are likely to be at least adequate to keep Rodgers upright?

If none of our OLB can show after Gary and Smith we may also have issues and some of those WR and TEs are going to need to contribute too. We need to see if the back up safeties and corners can make plays in a game too. Lots to see that may matter very soon, and that’s without touching on STs. Love is interesting but of secondary, even tertiary importance tonight.

It seems Aaron Rodgers has been noted by fans here at CHTV for having difficulties on third down, in that he'll often dismiss the easy pass that would move the chains for a more difficult pass downfield that is less likely to be completed. Then, punt.
Infamously, fans may remember a critical third down in the last playoff game against the 49ers in which Rodgers overlooked a wide open receiver to throw incomplete to a receiver in double coverage.
It probably cost the Packers the game, yet it is little remarked upon, and I don't know if Rodgers has ever been questioned about this inexplicable lapse in judgement. Was it ineptitude or stubbornness in a huge moment that meant no Super Bowl for the Packers once again?
By contrast, this article on Jordan Love thrust unexpectedly into a game against the Chiefs seems like nitpicking, and I don't know why the Chiefs game is more of an indicator of Love than the Lions game.
In any case, across both those games, it seems Love is 5 for his last 9 on third downs. Plus, he hit on a fourth down for a touchdown, with two other conversions on fourth down. Isn't that not all that terrible?

You mean other than the 500-600 times it's been remarked upon just on this site alone? We get it, it was a horribly bad decision on the part of Rodgers. Maybe time to move on?

"Maybe time to move on?"... if only the GBP organization would have.

IDK how you can say that play has been little remarked on. If it was a baby seal an Eskimo would be wearing it's skin by now.

I'm only saying stop it, that play is dead already.

I'm also fully ready to say anybody that wants to see Love play over Rodgers doesn't know much about football.
