The Lass Word: Packers Will Draft More Quarterbacks

Gutey intends to stick to the plan.

While national talking heads, with little clue what they’re talking about, continue to hype the possibility of Aaron Rodgers trying to force the Packers to trade him, or at least force the team to restructure his contract, cough up more money and guarantee it, General Manager Brian Gutekunst made a statement at his end of year media availability that particularly caught my attention.

Not only did he say he had no regrets, in retrospect, about drafting Jordan Love in the first round last spring, he indicated there would be more quarterbacks to come.  “This probably won’t be the first time we draft a quarterback and try to develop him because we think it’s such an important part of the game”, Gutekunst remarked.  “We’re going to use resources to acquire and develop quarterbacks because that’s what we believe in.”

If Aaron Rodgers was looking for something that resembled remorse from Gutey, he didn’t get it here.   And as for restructuring his deal?  Well, that is something the Packers, long ago, had figured to do anyway because of their salary cap situation.

Gutey wouldn’t comment specifically as to whether they will adjust Rodgers’ deal, but he did say “I’m not going to get into contract specifics, but what I will say is that every player is different, and different players merit different things, there’s no doubt about that.  He (Rodgers) is an exceptionally big part of what we’re doing and what we’re trying to do in the future.  So, as we attack this salary cap that we’re going to have to attack this season, there’s a lot of players’ contractual situations that we’re going to have to address.”

Translation:  Rodgers will get the raise and the guarantees that he wants, but it’s not because he got his feelings hurt when Love was drafted.  It’s not because he felt insulted because LaFleur took him out on 4th and goal.  It’s something the Packers knew they were going to have to do long before it became evident Rodgers was going to have an MVP season.

I keep hearing the national commentators rant about this incredible “leverage” that Rodgers now has.  How he will now call the shots as to how long he stays.  When the restructuring does happen, they will howl about how QB12 strong armed the team into submitting to his will.   How he will force them into acquiring players he wants, in order to go “all in”.   Former Packer and Rodgers teammate TJ Lang told a Detroit radio station that Rodgers is “hellbent on revenge”, and that he’s “gonna make them pay” for  drafting a quarterback.

Hogwash.  Most of these national suits don’t even follow the team closely enough to know their cap situation,  and are clueless to the reality that a restructure was always part of the strategy.

Gutekunst is not intimidated in the least.  Good for him.   He has a plan, and it’s a good one.  Ride Rodgers as long as he plays well, and when he declines, there’s a first round caliber quarterback ready to get his chance.  And if Love doesn’t pan out, he’ll have other signal callers already on the roster who might.  He will keep adding quarterbacks as he sees fit and won’t worry about whether Rodgers likes it.  Rodgers will get his money, everybody should be happy.

Compare that to the quarterback panic in places like Chicago, New England, San Francisco and Indianapolis.

To be fair, none of this inflammatory rhetoric has come directly from Rodgers’ lips.   “I don’t think there is any reason that I wouldn’t be back”, he told the Pat McAfee radio show.  He has merely referred to his future as being “uncertain” and calls it “a beautiful mystery”.

There’s no mystery for Gutekunst.  He’s got it covered.

I see Rodgers going to the Niners, getting married, buying a golf course near his parents house and raising a family after two more super bowl wins. LOL
What I think is funnier is him staying with the pack and thinking wow, one more super bowl win that's all I need to cement my legacy. Ya that boat sailed this year pal, its getting farther away next season and you'll be kicking you cat in the butt.

"While national talking heads, with little clue what they’re talking about,"

That's precious.

You mean nobody likes what many pundits say because they don't agree with what's being said, regardless of how true or false, while taking the easier road of simple denial.

Rodgers has leverage, and how forceful he wants it to be, he only knows at the moment. What the FO does to counter, offset or even attempt to douse, only they know at the moment. Sure, we know Rodgers isn't leaving this season, but what GB does with Love or what Love does, will speak louder for 2022. A Rodgers extension now decides Love's fate in GB sooner than later, and a Rodgers extension not happening this off-season can be seen as his last in GB, and there is no denying either possibility.

I do agree that too many talking heads (pundits) haven't a real clue of which they speak, but a couple are usually close to hitting the nail on the head, though many CHTV Packer fans hate them, because they don't toot the horn they demand.

What exactly is Rodgers leverage? It was either last week or the week prior he said again on the Pat McAfee show that is was a dream to play for one team his entire career and he has said in the past he wants to do that, but realizes since they traded Favre, he cannot control whether he plays his entire career for GB. He clearly likes his HC, QB coach and OC. He's best friends with his LT, loves the Green Bay fans, and is thriving in this offense. I just don't see anything but them working out a mutually beneficial deal to get the most out of his career in Green Bay, whether he finishes in GB or not.

Rodgers can demand a trade and force GB to go with Love. He has asked for a new contract which again if not done can force GB to use Love after this season or pull a Watson and threaten to sit out. He doesn't have to restructure his contract to help the salary cap. Your likely issue is you simply don't want to acknowledge it, and maybe it will go away. Will he use it in a detrimental way? I hope not, but he is human, with a big ego and that leaves every option open for him.

Taryn, I often find myself in agreement with you but I think you're reaching here. Rodgers isn't going anywhere. He doesn't want to leave and the Packers don't want to let go of one of the greats of all time right after he's had one of his greatest years. How stupid would that be for them, and for him, to have to start fresh with another team, with teammates he doesn't know and have to learn a new offense when he's just earned an MVP in this one? Gute drafting Love was 1) an insurance policy in the event Rodgers cratered this year, or 2) a long term development project of a kid with exceptional tools, training under one of the all-time greats.

Bottom line is that Rodgers is smart and likely has plans to keep raking in $$ after he hangs it up. His brand is important to him. Why would he tarnish it with a snitty sit-out threat or by making public comments that would make him look like a petulant, snotty star athlete? He's too smart for that.

The Packers continue to use the Ron Wolf philosophy of the draft and develop. Ron Wolf Drafted a Quarterback nearly every year see: Mark Brunell, Ty Detmer, Arron Brooks, Matt Hasselback to name a few. You don't think Gutey is using a similar type of draft philosophy? I wish the National pundits would do their home work before spouting off!

The author asserts:

"Rodgers will get the raise and the guarantees that he wants, but it’s not because he got his feelings hurt when Love was drafted. It’s not because he felt insulted because LaFleur took him out on 4th and goal. It’s something the Packers knew they were going to have to do long before it became evident Rodgers was going to have an MVP season."

Hogwash.

Gutey thought Aaron's play was diminishing and he'd be offloaded after the 2021 season when it would not be a bloodbath for GB financially.

Then Aaron went out and won the MVP and tied Gutey's hands by forcing Gutey to commit to Aaron beyond 2021.

Gutey is now viewed as a laughingstock around the league for wasting multiple 2020 draft picks on a player who is not expected to play for the Pack in 2020, 2021, or 2022 (at least) -- when those picks could have been used on players who would have helped get the Pack back to the long-awaited 2nd Super Bowl with Aaron at QB.

Gutey at this point has his tail tucked firmly between his legs and is promising to re-do Aaron's contract in a manner that will keep him around past 2021.

Thus, Gutey has publicly committed himself to paying Aaron for at least 2 more years while his 2020 1st (and 4th) round pick presumably molts on the bench for the foreseeable future. Well done Gutey, well done.

I guess this type of management boot licking journalism must be good for clickbait and or for currying favor with the folks within the halls of 1265 Lombardi but it reflects poorly on the author and the enterprise that compensates him to peddle such tripe.

In all fairness, the writers here are not professional journalists (paid), at least I hope not, as that will confirm what the writer said in his opening remarks, but doesn't realize he is then part of clueless Talking Heads, as he denigrates one's opinions/thoughts as being clueless and the others say the same of him.

I'm happy that articles are provided to read views and counter those views when they contradict my own or worthy of my participation. LOL. I know I just made some jump from their seats and hitting the keyboard, and that is what I said I'd do this off-season, keep a fire burning, leading the way. Couple things, ol' number 48. What I appreciate about this author is his ability to produce well-written and thoughtful work. That has not always been the case around CHTV. Ken's contributions offer clear concise information. He's a media veteran and a local, so I appreciate his take.

Calling his work "tripe" reflects poorly on you. Your misconception of him as a paid journalist, and of CHTV being an entity looking to curry favor within the Packers organization is ignorant at best.

I am curious as to Gute being viewed as "a laughingstock" around the NFL, though. Which franchises are on that list? Please share!

"Viewed as a laughingstock" by whom? Everything I've read by real football people instead of pundits is that they think highly of his methods of roster building so far. The improvements Gutey has made in the short time as GM are actually stunning to me. They absolutely had the players to get to the Title game this season, but they didn't play their best game when they needed to. You don't get to two NFC Championship games in a row without a strong roster, whether you have a Hall of Fame QB or not.

Two years in a row having a weak schedule, a weak division, and two defeats in the NFCCG, with one being a total beat down, and the other having him make dumb-ass calls. Yes, he has a nice record of 26-6 in regular season games, and no doubt he has coached above expectations, but we haven't seen what he'll do without the main ingredient. He may go 6-26 and that makes the prior moot.

Gute needs another QB, like we need another hole on this team. We saw how Kizer Failed. We've seen the Qbs fail under TT. We've seen QBs fail and fail, through out the Packers history. Gute has done nothing but sabotage this team,. (Since they started winning again. ) A fired DC tells the story since 2010. Gute's ideas are like a blast from the past. How do you preach everything in the NFL changes every 3 years. And stick to the ancient mobo jumbo he's pushing at us. What to expect. A DL that gives up yardage. Lbs that can't blow up plays. And a secondary that can't stop 3rd down conversions. But thats not the case on Offense. Right? Wrong! Wagner isn't going to ever be a big Time RT. We have NO Desmond Howard. (So forget field position.) And how many keep saying Rodgers needs more weapons. This draft can make up for players leaving. It's perfect for replacing salary; if Gute does his job. This should be Gutes last shot at getting it right. Drafting a QB is the wrong move. The Pack didn't come back, just to see a GM pad his pockets and be intolerable.

As we know AR12 just had a remarkable year with a 121.5 QB rating, just below his 2011 record setting year which scored 122.5.
Both seasons only had 2 games with sub 100 ratings (2020 was 35.4 & 91.6 and 2011 was 80.1 & 96.7)
2011 had 4 games over 140 compared to 3 in 2020.

I know all games count etc but just for fun I was wondering just how good it was compared to 2011, on average, i.e. taking out some outlier games. Essentially that first Tampa game was such an anomaly in AR12's rating (just 35.4) to me that I just wondered what his rating was without that game.
It's 127.7 !!

Even using a fairer statistical method of removing both his best and worst games comes out to 125.7.
Comparing this to 2011 and you get 125.6 and 124.1 respectively.

So without that game this season was actually better than the record setting 2011 season.

I have disagreed as much as I have agreed with Lass - people keep saying that we would still be playing if we would have taken a receiver or a linebacker ( that is what I wanted) - but here is the truth - nobody who played really well was there at 30. Definitely not on the defensive side - if so tell me who - now Claypool was there at 49 but why did he fall to Pittsburgh - or maybe he was an overachiever that everybody missed. So really nobody really outperformed on the field who we had after 30 on the draft - unless we picked either Jefferson Hamler or Claypool had we taken a receiver - and would they have played as well for us as others given the way that Lafleur brings rookies along. This was not a good defensive player early draft other than Young . Now as they say your rank your draft after year 3 so we will see how Dillon and Degura Martin and our 3 6th rounders come along. Love will not play next year and probably wont even back up - unless the protocols change by July and we get OTA's and preseason games we will not know if he is a bust or not. As far as AR having leaverage - of course he does - he is the highest paid guy and if we need cap room - something can always be done - carrot and the stick. It is better to renegotiate with him than to have to dump a guy with a few years of play left in him to save cap room. Right now - we will definitely need a back up running back to Dillon and some real help both on the back end as King and Jones will be thankfully gone and in the linebacker -D line area. Free agents - hope so - but how much released money will determine how good of a player one can get.

There were no ILBs that played well, but there were several DLs (Gross Matos, Blacklock, Davis) that played significant snaps for their teams and played well particularly during the last half of the season (which is what you would expect with no pre-season and minimal training camp). There were also other WRs besides Claypool (Pittman and Higgins) that played well. There were options that would have helped the Packers in places of need.

I have no idea if those players would have gotten the Pack past Tampa Bay much less KC, but no one really knows the answer to that question.

On the face of it, doubtful since the DL actually performed well and the receivers behind Adams did as well. The plausible marginal difference in that game seems minimal, but then our problems were more with coaching and calling ...

Don't know if I would say the DL performed well. They were adequate over the second half of the season, but Lowery, Lancaster and Keke scare no one. One of the three draftees I mentioned would have been an improvement over any of our DLs except Clark. Enough of an improvement, IDK.

I think Higgins or claypool could've helped a lot given that the packs offense couldn’t convert off of turnovers in the champ game, definitely contribute more than Love did.. Yeah our defense gave up points like usual since Mikey P was calling the shots..But our offense when needing to play catch up couldn’t get it done again, just like the last two season ending defeats.. There’s no reason to not give Rodgers more help with a another good receiver, none.. He doesn’t play as well against great defenses, don’t you think he deserves better than Lazard and MVS ?? Dont need to get that excited and disparaging - if you look at TT's last couple of drafts and the others that could have been taken - you would have some sort of reason to insult the GM - but Gutie has done an above average job to date - and maybe like TT you might be singing his praises if Love becomes the 3rd consecutive franchise QB and it might be the way it is done - ie bringing the new guy along slowly rather than chucking to the wolves.

"......... there’s a first round caliber quarterback ready to get his chance. And if Love doesn’t pan out, he’ll have other signal callers already on the roster who might." - Ken Lass
.
Well Ken, you have decades of NFL and Packer fan experience, you worked in the media, you seem like an authority.
But....how do you define a first round caliber QB? Because he was taken in the first round?
Was Mandarich a first round caliber left tackle?
Was Jamarcus Russell a first round caliber QB?
Was Ryan Leaf a first round caliber QB?
I guess...they were all picked in the first round
.
There is something called proving your worth in the NFL. That will determine whether or not you were "1st round caliber".
Jordan Love is currently 3rd string behind a undrafted QB with 4 NFL passes under his belt. The consensus of most scouts is Jordan Love is a project who has a long hill to climb to being an NFL starter.
.
Now lets touch base on "And if Love doesn’t pan out..........."
You seem to realize that is a possibility and that Love succeeding isn't a given, showing us a sense of realty.
.
Here's the problem...if Love doesn't work out, wouldn't trading up and drafting for him be known as a huge mistake, especially for a team on the cusp of getting to the Super Bowl?
Love's failure isn't just a matter of casually moving onto the next QB "on the roster". GM's get fired for moves like that, you should know that.
.
"Gutekunst is not intimidated in the least. Good for him. He has a plan, and it’s a good one."

If the plan is coming one game short of the Super Bowl twice, he's right on schedule.
.

I'd look at it differently, first-round caliber refers to being draftable in the first round, not whether the player ultimately proves to be have been worthy to have been drafted there. Russell Wilson and Tom Brady were not first-round caliber when they were drafted because the consensus of all the GM's and scouts was they weren't worthy. Ultimately they were all wrong. We'll have to wait and see with Love, but he was definitely first-round caliber when it came to the draft. Gute took a calculated risk on the most important position in sports. With Rodgers we won't be drafting top ten ever so taking that risk now on a player with great tools who has three years to sit and learn from a Hall of Famer was worth it.

Last year in ML's new system Rodgers threw the ball away more than any QB I have ever seen before. That being said the offense clunked thru games and won a lot of them. Several we probably should not have. We ended up with a great record and a shot at the Conference Championship. We were not good enough on offense or defense. Why Gute picked a QB at #1 is beyond me. I would have picked a WR. This year we were good enough to win and make some noise but blew it in so many ways and plays it is still hard to believe.
There are people not wanting to move salary around to compete but realistically the cap was suppose to increase 20 plus million before covid. I think it could help if the use the right ones to re-work and hopefully stadiums are back in business next season. Owners are not going to eat money but it would be nice if it happened. What's 20 mill for billion dollar teams. Pretty lame.

Agree with everything, except it’s pretty easy to believe they’d beat themselves, I was dumb to have faith they’d play sound football..

1. The Packers effectively weakened their team by drafting Jordan Love in the first round and wasting a fourth round (I believe) pick to move up and select him. Only Aaron Nagler believes that this was a smart move despite the fact that 99% of NFL commentators believe that the Love pick was woefully misguided. Just imagine if Claypool instead of EQ or Lazard had been on the field alongside DA and MVS.

Further, now that Rodgers is the NFL MVP, he will almost certainly be able to negotiate salary guarantees for 2021 and 2022, meaning that the earliest that Love could become the starting QB would be in 2023. Imagine the benefits of having had an elite WR this season and over the next two years instead of a reserve QB.

2. LaFleur is an outstanding coach who made a terrible mistake by kicking the FG on 4th and goal with just over 2 minutes to play in the NFC Championship game. When people cite the analytics stat the going for the TD only has a 0.5 % edge over kicking the FG, they forget that this stat does not take into account that Aaron Rodgers is the QB and therefore the true statistical probability of scoring a TD is much higher.

3. The Packers have an outstanding team and presumably Rodgers will be suggesting that the Packers upgrade the WR corps in order to give him the best possible receiving options this year. Would Claypool have dropped the 2 point conversion?

Go Pack Go.

I know I know - you play the game and the refs ref the game - But - If we had scored and lost the toss we probably would have lost the game in OT - we have a history of that. Or maybe not converted the 2 pointer. But Lafleur could just as easily have been a hero for kicking the FG - imagine if that flag had not been thrown and AR marched us down the field - and he moved us down to the 10 pretty easily last time - and we scored. we would have won the game in regulation and he would now be a guy who made the hero call of kicking the FG. And as far as drops are concerned just about every rookie was dropping passes - Jeudy Lamb including Claypool who dropped 2 against the Ravens in an important game near the end of the season.

What many fans sometimes fail to realize when evaluating this season, including myself,
Is the realization that most games essentially were played on neutral fields without crowd noise influencing player communications on the field. The China virus played a huge part in the outcome of many games in my opinion and I am not sure that when crowds return if ever, how teams fare compared to when stands were full.

Gutey is going to stick to the plan. That’s nice. Tell me though, what is the freakin’ plan? A year ago it was piss away draft choices on a young QB and power running backs. Now the plan is to bench the young QB for 4 years and keep the old QB who audibles out of 80% of your called running plays. What is the plan going to be in April, Gutey? Bring Tebow out of retirement and run the wildcat?

Yeah I’m sure Gute doesn’t have any regrets, because that would be admitting a mistake.. If he wastes another high pick on a qb I think he should be fired immediately..Usually I’m excited for the draft to come, but ever since he came along, I’ll just brace for the inevitable shit show that will commence.. Behind close doors I bet he has regrets, since it’s not so easy to get one game away from the super bowl without great players and luck in the health department..He picked up some solid FAs but his drafting is below average..

Of course they will draft a Qb and most likely put him on the Practice Squad whenever the times comes that its the best value. If Boyles gone they will need another, its how the NFL works.

Aaron may get a raise for 1 reason, Packers want to restructure his current contract for cap reasons and if Arod wants he can try to maximize any possible revenues from agreeing to it.

I don't know nearly enough to speak with certainty what the going rate is for contract restructure in pushing money out but guareenting more. We do know the Tom Brady was very generous. Wonder what Arod will be.

whether they come to an agreement or not he is going nowhere and do you really think there's a better option for him other than SF, he's childhood team, homecoming event, similar offense.

He would be exposed in many of the offenses run today. We saw how he looked in a more spread west coast look, he started to look old, not in this scheme.

GB is his best bet. Could you imagine the media issues he would have outside of GB. I'm not even talking tough questions, I'm talking a constant focus on creating controversy, false rumors, anonymous sources, constant statements cloaked in questions, erc... Morals & Ethics. Personal and Professional. He has it made in Wi with the fans and media.
