The Packers 2022 Offense Will Focus On... Matt LaFleur
There's no big-name receiver coming to rescue the Packers offense. But don't worry, they'll be just fine.

They say it's a quarterback-driven league and the Packers (particularly in the later stages of the Mike McCarthy era), were an Aaron Rodgers-driven team.
In the last game they played, when Rodgers force fed the ball to his favorite receiver, they looked like a Davante Adams-driven team.
With Adams gone, the wide receiver room looks... sparse, and the offense looks like it won't be able to function as it had in recent memory, when Adams, Jordy Nelson, Greg Jennings, and a deep receiving group always took center stage.
Simply put, the Packers won't be able to sign a free agent receiver or draft draft a guy in the first round and expect to run the same offense.
The Packers 2022 offense will undergo a fundamental shift this year and we'll see more and more of Matt LaFleur's creativity.
I think the biggest shift we'll see this year is a greater reliance on AJ Dillon as the workhorse back in a power running game. This will be reinforced by an interior line of Jon Runyan, Josh Myers, and Royce Newman - three guys who have shown an ability to create creases for a buffalo back like Dillon to plow through. Josiah Deguara will be fully recovered from his ACL injury and should play a big role in blocking for this hybrid-power scheme.
That doesn't mean that Aaron Jones's role will dimminish, though.
In fact, I could even see it expanded... but it will be as a pass catcher.
Jones was targeted 65 times as a receiver in the regular season last year, but had a whopping 10 targets in the playoffs - a game that only featured a total of 48 passes thrown between the two teams. No one besides Adams had more than two targets for the Packers and Jones's 129 receiving yards were nearly as much as San Francisco's 131 total yards of passing.
Jones has the versatility to move into a hybrid role as a pass catcher and we've seen it happen before. In the 2019 matchup at Kansas City and the Cardinals game last season, Jones led the team in targets, receptions, and receiving yards.
The Packers will draft a couple receivers and maybe pick up a free agent, but the passing game won't rely on superior wide receivers to beat their man in one-on-one situations. They won't be able to. They will lean heavily on Matt LaFleur to scheme guys (and not just wide receivers) open with unique route combinations. This will be even more successful because defenses won't be able to key on a guy like Adams as the focal point of the passing game.
The passing game will also continue to make greater use of the tight ends on the roster. In their last playoff game, Randall Cobb and Allen Lazard each had only one target. Tight ends Marcedes Lewis and Josiah Deguara also had one each, while Dominique Dafney had two. It's a small sample size, but it shows how the Packers went to wide receivers less - only 13 of Rodgers's 29 pass attempts went to a wide receiver.
I expect that trend to continue now that their best receiver is gone.
Matt LaFleur - at every stop in his career - has shown the ability to devise creative offensive approaches with non-traditional approaches. From creating an offense for a uniquely-skilled rookie like RGIII, to squeezing an MVP out of Matt Ryan, to building a contender with Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry, he has risen to every occasion.
Now, with what might be the barest receiving corps in the NFL, Matt LaFleur has a new challenge.
And he's up for it.
Don't look for some big receiving name to save the Packers offense in 2022 - that's Matt LaFleur's job.

Great point JB27: QB1 needs to buy into MLF's offense and that is a very open question. Rodgers has all but eliminated the pre-snap shifts that create MLF's "illusion of complexity" as well as ignoring the short, move-the-chains passes that are fundamental to this type of offense. So who's offense will it be in 2022 - MLF's or QB1's?

The most surprising thing about johnblood27's comment is that he doesn't think LaFleur has already more than shown his class and talent, with three 13 win seasons.
While I'd love to see another SB as much as anyone, MLF doesn't have a whole lot left to prove. He has shown to be a good coach and has the production to back it up.
Why do you think the Packers lost so many coaches this year - other teams want to buy in to what the Packers have.

Although I'm not a big fan of Alec Pierce, I've recently been seeing him as a possible Packer target, just because they will want that MVS-style tall deep threat to run LaFleur's offense. Watson is the better prospect (by a LOT in my book), but I think someone else will nab him before the Packers, but Pierce might be there at 53 for instance.
I agree with your thoughts Bruce, but I'm worried it's wishful thinking, because we thought it would be a more run-driven offense last year. Maybe it didn't happen because of the offensive line injuries--that's my hope.

I am watching what is hot. Most mocks have Watson going to KC. ( A pick behind us. ) That just tells me; if he's good at #29. Make sure you get him at #22. Because Burks and Olave won't be there. ( Prediction is the top 5 WRs, go before 20 now.) Alec Pierce is Hot. He's now in the low 50s . And I hope Gutey just forgets the edge and Takes Travis Jones @28.( He's at 33 on most boards.) He'll give Clarke help, and the pressure of an edge player.

Pierce is now in the upper 30s , low 40s. Moore is in the second round. The carcass will be picked clean if any of the dinosaurs think there will be WR talent waiting for them at #53. Correct, the run will be on WRs, not QBs.
I still advocate for two WRs from round one. Full Hedge. They can get a Veteran Edge from free agency.

I have a hard time reconciling spending an R1 on a WR who had about 1/3 the total number of receptions in his draft year that Jordy Nelson had as the #36 pick of the 2008 draft. Watson had 43 receptions?
Mock drafts are in some cases popularity contests. Like, in this case.
Has anyone stopped to think about NDSU’s level of competition, at all??? This ain’t no NFL level stuff. Ho-ly Schneikies… I mean, does that make you feel this is a safe pick R1???

Hard to be run driven when you are paying a four-time MVP to toss the rock. Get better skill people for him to light up the red zone. It is not too complicated, they lack big play WRs at the moment.

Running the same Offense isn’t the problem. If Adams was the team. It’s obvious why they lost. The biggest failure of this offense was the OL. And it must end. Moving guys around; Only showed their versatility, and not much of anything else. And thats the same problem, we had with the WRs. Adams was the only guy who knew what he was doing. So take the whole plan and scrap it. WE knew Adams needed a partner. We knew Clark needed help too. It Can’t happen until the field gets stretched. And you just won’t be helping Rodgers, but the RBs too. Until we get those duo threats again. This team will struggle. Memories are for the past. The frustration that Fans keep experiencing need answers. And this has been put on the back burner too long. It’s time to draft the duos needed. And not worry about what looks pretty. It only needs to work, and get the job done.

Stock, I get your point and agree with most of it. Yet I see the return of Bakh, Jenkins and Myers backed up by Yosh at tackle to be a formidable group. The guards are more than serviceable. I would imagine drafting a lineman will happen but at what round? He probably won’t start anyway. Still, if a superior player becomes available at a draft bargain I imagine Gutie will grab him. I just don’t see this as a huge need in the early rounds.

Nice write up and think you hit the nail on the head. Stockholder you are right as well. Last year w/o Bak the team had to do some major reworks on the oline. Those guys got major experience and will be even better this year. Jenkins missing will affect the Packers even more than Bak did, but because they are better prepared…it won’t affect the offense as much.
The offense Bruce describes is the only one that can take Green Bay to the SB. IMHO.

I wish I had as much confidence in MLF as the author has. While MLF has certainly produced some gaudy regular season records, I have also seen a persistent inability to make in-game adjustments; not holding the special team's coaches accountable for recurring failures (at least in a timely manner); some peculiar personnel decisions (benching Nijman in favor of moving Turner and inserting Kelly); and an increasing deference to QB1's preferences (no pre-snap shifts and minimal "illusion of complexity"). Perhaps the promotion of Stenavich and the hiring of Clements will help some of these issues, but I am not as confident as the author in the Packer's head coach.

I think Chris Olave fills a big need, at WR, for the Packers and he could be available at pick 28. Olave won't last past KCC's picks right after the Packers pick at 28, in the first round. With pick 22 I'd get an Edge guy, like Karlaftis, to shore up our pass rush, with Gary and Preston. We also need a Safety, as both Savage and Amos enter the final year of their contracts, and Jaquan Brisker may be there at 53. If Gute and Co value a S more than a WR, they could go for Brisker, or another S, (Cine?) at 28, and hope Watson, Metchie III, Pickens or Pierce are still there at 53, 59 or 92. I do think picking 2 WR in the first 5 picks is a good thing to do. We still need long term IDL help, even with Reed on the team. Look for an IDL to be selected by pick 59, as well. All this depends on how the board falls and whom Gute and Co values at those positions. It's easy for us to do, but Gute and Co are the ones, under the gun, to get the best players for the Packers. It sure is fun, though!

Olave is overrated. Let the bears or some other scrub team overdraft him. He doesnt belong anywhere near the 1st round. I wouldnt even take him in the 2nd. The film doesnt lie. Most of his production in college was on drag routes and deep over routes where he didnt have to beat tight coverage, all he had to do was outrun the defender to the other side of the field. He will get owned by #1 corners in the NFL. No thanks. Give me David Bell all day. Best receiver in this draft.

Matt L needs to make adjustments on the fly and/or Rodgers has to respect coach's adjustment and buy into them...not sure if it is poor in game adjustments during the playoffs, poor execution on Rodger's part or just really good scheming of the opponent's defense.
Either way, I tip my cap to Matt L for being a better psychologist than even he probably thought necessary to keep the G-train on the tracks.....!

Now, I will apologize in advance and please delete this if it doesn't add to the topic of Packer football and Matt L's article. I was just thinking of all the fun moments that lead up to kickoff at Lambeau Field: the tailgating conversations, the sizzling brats, the beer (nectar of the Gods), the sauteed onions and mushrooms, and then the chili...the chili. I was on my second date with a lovely lass attending a Packer game and wanted to give her an overall experience of tailgating and a live game atmosphere. Things were going well, it wasn't too cold, she seemed to buy into the experience and we stopped to chat with some fans. One group offered us chili (I should have known better). Things were going well until we sat down on our bleacher seats. I thought I was prepared, mixing breath mints with my brew. I was hoping to get a kiss with her when all of a sudden, my inards we're rumbling. I tried to play cool and dab the beads of sweat from my forehead in-between claps. I was getting nervous with what may or may not transpire with my intestinal situation. Then, I just muttered something like, allow my lips to say what my stumbling words cannot. She did give me a peck. In summary...we walked back to the vehicle parked Ridge road...I was walking like John Wayne back to the truck...but, not tall and proud like John Wayne. I never heard from her after that. Honey, if you are reading this....please reply. I promise NO MORE chili at a Packer game. I am transitioning to a more vegan diet and that seems to keep the gas at bay.... Hugs and kisses...heck, I would settle for a hug....peace and GPG!

Only a spoonful...I ate mine and then finished her's off too. On a side note: cold, metal bleachers (even with a seat cushion) are extraordinarily resourceful at reverberating...long after necessary. I tried coughing each time I had to "sneak" a gas flume by. She probably thought I was a heavy smoker? I blamed the poor, older gentleman somewhat near her that HE had to be the one with the pants burp issue. I am not proud of blaming the elder statesman but...I was running out of ideas at that time....

Here's my cut. Gute should trade for a WR witha thirdorfourthrouner. Then pick a WR in first or second round. I like Watson. Then with balance of first four picks, get a DL, an Edge and an ILB. Then get another WR, OL, S and CB.

I miss Mike Holmgren because I thought he absolutely was an offensive genius. MLF is in a tough situation with AR12 but he has managed it pretty well. I think he would be more successful if his QB targeted the open receiver more consistently but what can you do? The loss of Davante Adams and the addition of rookie receivers will hopefully encourage AR12 to survey the whole field this year. Crank up the running game and spread the ball around to make this offense even tougher to defend. Coach of the year voting tells us the voters aren't sold on MLF. Maybe this will be his year, after we win the Superbowl?

This an EXCELLENT comment, one I don't think I can really add to. Perhaps if the Packers can get a combination of Burks and Watson, Olave and Watson, Olave and Pierce, or Olave and Tolbert, then maybe Rodgers will finally run this offense the way it's intended to be ran. But IMO it's going to take TWO WR with the first 4 or 5 picks. The others? Well, perhaps Safety, OL, and Edge not in that particular order and I'd be a happy man.
This will be a very interesting draft. The one thing Gute has always done is draft with an eye on the future and the other for the upcoming season. I think he can help both, the 2022 Packers and the Packers teams after this upcoming season. One thing is certain, day one and day two of this draft are going to tell us a LOT, of what the Plan is for the next few years.

I really really hope this is the case, but I dont just see it. They didnt just make Rodgers the most expensive qb ever to hand the ball off and be a system qb. Hes the gm, head coach, and offensive coordinator now too. I would love nothing more than for Rodgers to ditch the ego and do whats best for the team, but I have better odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot.

I see this same blind love for one player over the team’s best interests everywhere… now, just like I have seen for years. He’s just a great thrower of the football sometimes. Not all the time. And, he leaves a lot to be desired in the true Championship winner and leader department. As a game manager? Self serving… pass happy. No?
You really see him handing the ball off 40+ attempts throughout a 17 game schedule and the entire playoffs? Him??? It’s the road to success with Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon & Kylin Hill if healthy, or another new rookie, but, he’s proven himself incapable going back to when we had Jamaal Williams.
Coming off his 4th MVP, his value has arguably never been greater.
Send him to NYG for #s 5 & 7 overall, and a bunch of other picks, players, and begin the new era - with a very, very healthy future. I’ll take Jordan Love to lead our Packers to win the Super Bowl this year over any scenario that involves keeping AR.

Matt is a great coach. Yet there have been times when he was slow to adjust to some defenses during the game. The rest of the NFL has caught up to some of his stuff. However, with a full training camp and off-season adjustments I imagine that he will be well prepared. It’s his new assistant coaches that I worry about.

I question how much, if any, of the lack of adjustments are on Lafleur. So much of this offense is decided by 12 at the line of scrimmage so its almost impossible to tell. But if i had to guess, i would put it on 12 and heres why: for long stretches of games, this offense goes away from the "illusion of complexity" concept that has been so successful for them in favor of the Rodgers "check with me" offense where everything is decided at the line. This was how we ended up with so many targets for Adams and so few for anyone else. This is also why this team abandons the run so often. Sometimes, its easy to forget Mccarthy was fired 4 years ago because the offense looks almost identicle.

Bruce, you're using the crappiest offensive output game to be the standard. The OL was poor and so was AR. I get that 1 WR will not be the focal point but is it AR or ML basic poor designed game plan that is the problem? Everyone absolutely has to be involved. Certain teams can limit your offenses production but it should not be the run game (AND) passing game also. We have had the worst luck possible on our OL with key injuries and players do fill their slots but "THEY ARE NOT"- Bak nor Jenkins. ML needs to figure out if Yosh is gonna be our RT or draft the ONE. Not having DA replacement #1 WR already on the team is a travesty and not even having a #2 WR on the team is just as bad. I really would like to use both #1's on finishing up our defense but the more I look how pathetic it is we should use both #1's at WR, 2023 #1 on TE McBride and move up in round 2 and get a better slot WR in SKYY. Then at least we will have a legit run game and passing game. Nobody is gonna stop that when our big guys on the OL are back.

I think most plays will work if they are executed correctly, but nothing works on offense unless guys get blocked. Those Os on the chalkboard always get the Xs blocked, and you need talent on the field to make that happen. When your opponent is lining up guys like Khalil Mack and Aaron Donald, you have to have somebody who can handle them. No amount of scheming will help enough if Donald is just kicking this guy's ass.
If the blocking gets done, then the skill positions can shine, but every great running back looks pretty much the same when there isn't any hole. Every QB looks better when he has time.
So, it's design and execution....but you have to have players. I don't think it's possible to "out-talent" the other 31 teams in the league. You might out-talent some of them, but not all of them.

Exactly: every offensive play except the kneel down and the QB sneak is designed to go for points if properly executed...and you can out-execute poorly-disciplined but better-talented teams in the regular season. By the time you get to the playoffs, most of those teams are weeded out. I don't think it's ever one or the other....it's both.

We need an enormous injection of talent on offense WR, TE. We have needed a #2 WR since 2018. Our RB rotation is good. Tonyan is not back and if he does return to a 10 TD season will price himself right back out.
Without DA-AR will need to throw it to someone or throw it out of bounds a lot like 2020.

Bruce, I think LaFleur will continue to run better than half the offense through the RBs. I think when we throw, the emphasis is on getting the ball out quickly so Rodgers doesn't take a bunch of hits during the season.
You can absolutely, positively, scheme even averagely talented players open. I don't think LaFleur will have any problem in that regard.

If LaFleur expects to run the offense more with the backs the Packers better have more depth than they played with last year behind Showtyme and Quadzilla. And to have a back-up behind each that can keep the offense in form with the starters.
