The Packers Are Better Off Being Conservative with Jordan Love
By GilMartin

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love suffered a knee injury in the final minute of the team’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. Initially, there was concern the injury could be season-ending, but after returning from Brazil, Love was diagnosed with a sprained MCL and was initially expected to miss 3-6 weeks.
In the week since the Packers returned to Green Bay, the team has hinted that Love may be back sooner than the initial three-week estimate.
As Sunday’s home opener against the Indianapolis Colts got closer, head coach Matt LaFleur made some statements hinting that Love could be available on Sunday. On the team’s official injury report, he was listed as “questionable” on Friday, despite not practicing all week. He also described “Love as day-to-day.”
This is most likely gamesmanship on LaFleur’s part. He wants the Colts coaching staff to prepare for both Love and backup Malik Willis who is the likely starter on Sunday. If that even serves as a partial distraction or takes away some time for them to prepare for Willis, it was worth making those statements.
But should the Packers play Love on Sunday? Probably not. Even if somehow, Love would be capable of playing, the risk of a further, long-term injury would not be worth trying to win an early-season game in September.
Traditionally, the Packers have been conservative with their injured players. Perhaps the most important recent example came in 2017 with the team’s last franchise quarterback, Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers suffered a fractured collarbone on a questionable hit by Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr in Week 6. Surgery was required and Rodgers was placed on injured reserve. The Packers were 4-1 in the games before Rodgers went down and were expected to be Super Bowl contenders that season.
The Packers turned to Brett Hundley at quarterback. Hundley was not able to win consistently. As the season progressed, the Packers were barely able to stay in the playoff hunt. They went 3-5 in the eight games Hundley was the team’s primary quarterback. The team’s playoff hopes were hanging by a thread.
But the Packers didn’t rush Rodgers back. Eventually, he returned for a Week 15 game in Carolina. The Packers lost that game 31-24 and then the team shut down Rodgers for the rest of the season.
David Bakhtiari is another recent example of a player the Packers didn’t rush back from injury. The former All Pro tackle hasn’t been fully healthy since suffering a knee injury before the 2020 season finale. Last year, the team and the player agreed to shut Bakhtiari down for the season after his knee swelled up during the team’s Week 1 win over the Bears. The Packers didn’t have an experienced backup taking over at left tackle, but they agreed Bakhtiari would benefit from the operation that they hoped would help him resume his career in 2024.
The Packers also didn’t rush Jaire Alexander or Aaron Jones back from injury last season. They eventually did manage to make the playoffs with a strong finish, but they were conservative with their injured players.
The Packers games in Weeks 2-4 are winnable contests. Trying to win at least one of those three games with the inexperienced Willis under center makes more sense in the long run than risking a more serious injury to Love.
The Packers have invested a lot of money in Jordan Love. They have committed to him as their quarterback for the foreseeable future. Losing him to a more serious injury would be devastating for both the team and the player. If Love cannot be effective or escape pressure, the risk of another injury goes up substantially.
In this case, patience is a virtue. All the Packers need to do is reach the playoffs. With Love and a talented young roster, they are capable of beating any opponent on any day. Rushing Love back would not be the right move right now, as tempting as it may be.

Absolutely, get Love back with full mobility instead of hampering his chances of an even more serious injury. Just like the 2010-11 season where we lost Rogers and others to injury for a couple of games. However, a good defense held it to gather for us all season, so the D must step up starting now.

More recently we put both Stokes and Watson out there too soon only to lose them for longer. That outcome is not worth one game if it’s your starting QB.

I would say that if the Packers OL were capable of providing solid protection for a QB with limited or no mobility and Love is ready then he could play. However the Packers OL doesn't seem close to that point yet for this season. Keep Love out for another week or 2 and hope that Willis can squeak out a win.
Hopefully Love can return by Week 4 or 5. However if the Packers are 0-4 or 0-5 at that point than Gute should be seriously scrutinized for allowing the Packers to reach that point due to his failure to sign a decent backup QB during the offseason.
This week's game at Lambeau without much available tape on Willis could be the Packers best opportunity to win a game during Love's absence. Go Pack Go!

I don't think Championships are won in September.

Well, technically it's the only time championships are won in Minnesota

Beware the gambler's fallacy. Every game counts the same whether Sept or Dec.

Best to let him sit (think Tua of Miami)...But if LaFleur wants to try it I'd start out with Malik the first couple of drives to see how the line is holding up and whether the running game is working. Then (if necessary, if he thinks it will make a difference in winning) put Love in. I still wouldn't do it.

This is perfect. Had Tua of Miami not been playing he wouldn't have gotten hurt and would be avaialbe to sit on the sidelines again next game. Love has an MCL sprain, Tua of Miami a history of concussions. Love is out 3-6 weeks. Tua of Miami should be not so gently guided to retirement.
I think if the Packers can get Bakhtiari back for the Colts game, then I'd start Willis, replace him with Clifford if the line is good, and *then* after halftime, surprise them by putting Love in the game! But, then take him out and put Willis back in, but only if LaFleur wants.
But, I'd let Love heal up because Gute will always be churning the roster and maybe Ryan Tannehill will be available, but he might not be, and if the D can't stop the run we'll never win anyway.
Why can't CHTV be more welcoming to those with differing opinions? Why can't we reach out to each other with hardy debate, verve and reverie rather than scorn and snark. I've often said Aaron Rodgers is the fault line along which the Packers crack, and no one cares. I'm met with ennui.
Oh, and Dumpster Fire!

I guess someone would feel the need to write this mess, citing a bunch of examples that do nothing to bolster your case. i'll go with whatever the coaching and medical staff think is the best course.

The ugly part is the packers invested heavy in Jordan Love.
It might take all year to return to his playoff strength.

Yes of course. If only they hadn't invested in Jordan Love, they would not be facing the conundrum of what to do with Jordan Love sidelined. Your logic is impeccable, again.

But but they have Clifford! He’s the next Tom Brady if only MLF would open his eyes!

Careful Gil. You're risking the wrath of the folks who think the players are supermen, capable of having two broken legs, two broken arms, a concussion and a ruptured spleen and merely be listed as 'questionable'.
It's like the old Monty Python scene where the knight has his arm chopped off by a sword and says, "just a scratch".
Love should go on IR for four games so the leg is healed enough to carry on the remaining 12 games. It's like rushing back from a hamstring injury too soon...which means they will be out of play within a couple of weeks with another hammy injury.
Willis is getting paid to carry the team, not a clipboard. Go out and earn your pay.

He has to heal both physically and mentally...he has to trust his body and not be skittish of the same injury...that wont happen soon..
