The Packers Look to be Committed to Their Young Wide Receivers

The Packers opting not to add a wide receiver during their free agent frenzy shows that they believe in their young wide receivers (for now).

After a season with not much production from any wide receiver not named Davante Adams, the Packers have continued to show patience and trust in their young receiving core by not adding any veteran receivers during free agency.  Personally, I am a little worried about the lack of experience at the wide receiver position going into 2019, but Brian Gutekunst could still choose to add a veteran receiver during the second wave of free agency or select an impact receiver during the draft.

The Packers front office absolutely made the right decision by choosing to prioritize the safety, edge rusher, and offensive line positions during their free agent frenzy this past Tuesday.  The decision not to add a receiver of note shows us, Brian Gutekunst, Matt LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers do in-fact believe Marques Valdes-Scantling and Equanimeous St. Brown will make the second year jump, and Geronimo Allison is worthy of being the second option opposite Davante Adams.

Although J'Monn Moore has been seen on twitter working feverishly to improve from his abysmal rookie season, I find it hard to believe that he will be able to cement himself as a viable option into the Packers offense in 2019, which is why I still believe that the Packers will go outside of the organization to replace Randall Cobb.

Before we all jump to conclusions and say this is my subtle way of advocating that the Packers bring back Jordy Nelson, let me clearly state for the record that I still believe Jordy Nelson played his final game as a Packer in December of 2017.  Although a reunion with Nelson is the story everyone is hoping for, it is not the ideal addition to improve the Packers wide receiver core in 2019 and beyond.

In all likelihood, the Packers will not test the free agent market with the limited amount of options available at the wide receiver position, especially after recently tendering Jake Kumerow who could fight for a spot in the lineup during training camp.

As it currently stands, the Packers are heading into the 2019 season with 6 wide receivers on the roster.  However, the way that the construction of the wide receiver group currently stands only two positions on the pecking order is guaranteed, (WR1 Davante Adams and WR2 Geronimo Allison).   Additionally, I see only four wide receiver spots on the roster set in stone for week 1: Davante Adams, Geronimo Allison, Marques Valdes-Scantling, and Equanimeous St. Brown.

With this in mind, I think the Packers could draft 1-2 receivers who will have a chance to replace J'Monn Moore, Allen Lazard, and yes, even touchdown Jesus himself, Jake Kumerow. Here are just a few of the wide receivers the Packers could select in the premium rounds of this year's draft who could change the appearance of the team's wide receiving core next season.

Wide Receivers the Packers Could Draft: *I think the Packers draft any combination of Tight End, Edge Rusher, or Offensive Line (Bulaga's eventual replacement) with their first-round selections (12 and 30).

  • Round 2, Pick 44, A.J Brown, Ole Miss: All the buzz out of Ole Miss surrounds D.K Metcalf, but, A.J Brown could end up having the better NFL career out of the two players.  Brown has a 6'1, 230 lb frame with strong hands that make difficult catches seem routine, an uncanny ability to get yards after the catch, and a deadly combination of size and speed which allows him to run his routes smoothly and effortlessly.
  • Round 2, Pick 44, J.J Arcega-Whiteside, Stanford: Arcega-Whiteside is yet another option to play opposite Davante Adams.  He possesses a 6'3 frame which allows him to stretch the field, create space, and go up over any corner to make a grab in traffic.  He was able to have a very impressive senior season at Stanford, catching 63 passes for 1,059 yards and 14 touchdowns, in a somewhat limited offense.
  • Round 2/ Round 3, Hakeem Butler, Iowa St.:  Butler would have a chance to be the third or fourth option in the Packers offense in 2019 if selected.  He possesses a near 6'6 frame and had a breakout season this season for the Cyclones averaging 22 yards per reception.  Butler certainly would be a viable option to be on the receiving end of some shot plays downfield as he has shown to be a big play threat in college.
  • Round 2/ Round 3, Andy Isabella, UMass: Andy Isabella went virtually unnoticed for four years until he sent shock waves through the college football world by toasting Georgia's highly touted secondary for 15 receptions, 219 yards and 2 touchdowns in the season finale.  Isabella was UMass's most reliable receiver for the past 3 seasons and had a breakout season this year as he caught 102 passes for 1,698 yards and 13 touchdowns.  Isabella profiles as the perfect, tough, and reliable slot receiver who could eventually replace Randall Cobb's production and do a little bit of everything in Matt LaFleur's offense.

Sound Off:

Let me know how you currently feel about the state of the Packers wide receiving core.  Do you think the Packers should look to add a receiver in the second wave of free agency, stand pat with their young receivers, or draft a receiver or two with their premium selections in this year's draft?

Good plan, if just one of them has a breakout 2nd year would be great. I think we could have two of them really step up. Isabella would be a nice addition.

David,
Personally do not see a need for another WR. Geronimo was on pace to break 1,000 prior to injury. Brown and MVS evolved and did adequately as rookies. The potential is there for significant growth this year.

You draft a WR you have to cut a couple, or try slipping a few thru to practice squad. With 8+ WR's already on team hard to see them picking up a WR unless purely a slot receiver. Then Moore, Kumerow, Lazzard, and Trevor Davis fight for likely one spot.

Be better picking up a TE than a WR IMO.

Edit: Plus, if they drafted Fant with sub 4.5 speed he is the second fastest WR on team. In essence he is both a TE and WR. He is a hybrid who essentially fills two spots.

Gute is committed to investing in this defense, giving Pettine more to work with and solidifying the offensive line. Rodgers has to make it work with youth at WR. The arrow is pointing up for Marquez Valdez-Scantling and Equinemious St. Brown. We will see if J'Mon Moore can progress in year 2. I don't mind the approach. Draft a TE and see where it goes.

Tyrell Williams signed for a $10M cap hit in 2019. 1 year out is $10M and ZERO dead money. Team has an option at $11.1M for 2020, and $11.6M for 2021 and 2022 with again, no dead money (his 2020 $11M base salary is guaranteed for injury and become fully guaranteed in early February). $10M guaranteed but it is all for 2019. Yds/rec has exceeded 15 in all three years. His total receiving yards have gone down, but IDK why other than Keenum Allen and Mike Williams (and his 10 receiving TDs).

It is a passing league. Need a QB and the QB needs a couple/three high quality receiving options. GB's offense is (IMO) close to elite, by which I mean top 3 and more than 30 points per game. Needed an RG, WR/TE, and some OL depth.

Love the player. Really love Tyrell Williams' contract.

I actually love the young Packers wide receivers. Not worried at all about this area. Very impressed with MVS especially and ESB. Kumerow will make the team and the biggest improvement of all IMPrO will be from J'Mon Moore who I think moves up to no. 4 or 5 on the charts. I also think they draft another receiver who makes the team. I also think they draft not one but two tight ends. One high. I predict Lewis and Geronimo both get cut when it's all said and done.

My biggest worry on this team is Aaron Rodgers which is why we need to immediately establish Boyle as our no. 2. I hope LaFleur quits effing around with Kizer and chucks his ass to the curb. It was a horrible trade by Gute and he needs to admit it and move on. Chuck him!!

I kind of half agree with Dash. I like ESB and MVS (and of course Adams) so I would prefer to not spend any of the first 4 draft picks on a WR. Especially if we pick a TE early.

I don’t think any of us have seen enough of Moore, Kumerow or at QB Boyle, to know what they are going to do.

If the first 4 picks (in no particular order) find us a TE, OL, Safety, Defensive front 7 player, then I wouldn’t mind drafting another WR.

Obviously if some WR falls in the draft to a “great value” spot then go ahead and deviate from the above.

In a straight line, Metcalf can be compared to Julio or Calvin. But he can only run two routes, and has questionable hands. His lateral agility and ability to cut is laughably bad.

If you want a beefed up version of Jeff Janis, then sure, grab Metcalf. But, if you do, you're grabbing a guy whose 3-cone time was worse than Tom Brady.

The best Boyle can hope for is a spot on the PS, especially if Gute opts to sign a veteran BU QB. -- If you haven't noticed, Gute is all in for season 2019. -- That includes a BU QB who has (at least) played & won a few games in his career. -- Boyle is just another undrafted project. --- Numerous "undrafted projects" on the 53 were a TT/MM practice. ---- This is a new day with a new regime.

This is why people like you are not taken seriously here Samson. Did you listen at all to one of the greatest interviews a couple days ago with Andy Herman and Tim Boyle? This kid is ready to go this season. He has all the physical tools as well as the smarts and mental preparation as Aaron Rodgers. I would have no problems at all with Tim Boyle taking over or starting for Rodgers this year and winning. That's how confident I am in Boyle and his abilities. I know there's plenty of other smart people here like I am that believe in Boyle like I do. Maybe they'll finally speak up maybe they won't and are waiting but I'm not. I take offense to insulting comments like yours Samson. You only say those things to antagonize the pro Boyle crowd particularly me. I simply will not let you get away with it.

We all want great pros now, but some pros are like fine wine and get better with age. I’m all for BPA in the draft and getting another WR, but it may time for the rookie to mature and blossom.

Without a doubt they have talent to work with in EQ and MVS, Moore is more of a wait and see development. How long they deal with that unknown, but if they are truly committed to a quick rebuild Moore will go 4th round pick or not.
I believe that they will move on from Davis because of his limited roll as a returner. He is always injured. Look for a slot/return man to be drafted, if so Davis is gone.

Kumerow definitely has chemistry with Rogers and talent. Does he have a quick enough twitch to be the slot man? Time will tell.

If none of them can play slot as your saying I have zero doubt that Adams can. I on the other hand think both Kumerow and St Brown run very sneaky good routes and with their size can win inside no problem. Adams has a wicked release and very quick feet so he would be a great option there. Allison, MVS and Moore are guys who I wouldn't use in the slot too much if at all. Then there is Jimmy Graham who can and will line up anywhere.

Back to the same ole same ole with people wanting to give up on the young talent that was picked up because they didn't explode out of the gate. Throw on top of that the fact that because guys got injured playing a high impact violent game and they can't make it in the league. Don't forget to include the kid who came out a year early, played on a team that was in a state of chaos and had to start retraining in the basics of footwork, reads and oh yeah, learn a new offense. Don't worry about the fact that they probably all learned huge lessons from their errors and are working to improve form the lessons learned. I swear there wouldn't have been any to run things and fight a war if some of you were in charge of my squadron while I was in the Navy. Arm chair GM's kill me.

I would not mind adding a WR during the draft. However, I would not do so until our 4th pick or later. We have other needs to address with our first 2-3 picks.

The problem is that you can never know how the draft will shake out and if a high quality player will fall into your lap.

The same is true for our RB group. If the right player is there earlier than expected we might want to select him and improve the RB position group.

Packers should focus on the draft. The Packers aren’t going to blow anyone out with a passing game with this stable of young wide receivers, but with a stable of runners getting first downs, and a less predictable offensive attack. If the offensive line improves the whole unit including these young guys will all look better. Run the ball, stop allowing Aaron Rogers to have his body punished like he is some young expendable quarterback, and win some games. Development and rolling out an evolving less complicated offense is key. Ball control, and getting first downs will be nice. Even if our wide receivers average a C+ as a whole. In an effective offense with an actual running game that is utilized those receivers will have plenty of opportunity to shine. Especially if they get to be what they are good at.

Just saying Jennings at #2 with Nelson and Cobb. JJ a number three pick.
E-quan had a #3 grade by some evaluators and he is a find if he is willing to put the work in. He has natural hands and shows some of Lofton's easy glide. MVS was moved from Florida to SFU and lost some time in development. His deep speed cannot be taught, but he needs to work on sideline awareness and his footwork to get-off the press cover which he will see more of this season. He seems to be a determined guy. If there is a player at the three pick, I would take him as a slot WR. Gutekunst will be wheeling and dealing to get quality selections. I think he comes out with four blue chips in April.

"Development and rolling out an evolving less complicated offense is key."

I think that is the key to the Packers having success early in the new offensive scheme. Lafleur has said on multiple occasions that you don't need a ton of plays, you need a few plays that you run out of multiple formations to confuse the defense.

McCarthy's scheme was famous for taking 2-3 years for a QB & WR to be effective in because each receiver had several different routes on any given play based on what the pass coverage did. If they made the wrong decision, the ball was thrown where they were supposed to be and it was going to be an interception.

As the NFL gets younger, teams can't afford to wait 2-3 years for players to be productive. Your schemes shouldn't be more confusing for your own players than they are for opposing players.

Let’s draft a couple of TE’s as this is the best year for TE’s in many, many years. Isabella is a rare talent. If he falls to the 4th round, he would be hard to pass up.
A pass catching RB might be more likely in play as an insurance policy against Aaron Jones.

I am fine with all WR, even J'mon Moore. But if we gonna draft someone, it has to be a different type from what we already have. IMO the ideal profile is a slot WR, who can stretch the field and catch some deep balls. J'Mon Moore can develop but if we want an assurance we could draft a guy LATER, since I don't think this is a priority. I like some guys in this year:
-Hakeen Butler is an excellent deep threat and has speed and size, but has some drops in easy targets.
-Andy Isabella is also a excellent deep threat, and great in the slot. He could also be a returner. (4.31 40 yeard dash)
I would be fine with both of them.
However, the problems is that these guys will require at least a 3th round pick, which I think it is too high, given the talent we already have. Later options aren't that great so I think we could just forget about WR early on.
The best move is to draft a good TE early, since LaFLeur will run more 2 TEs sets, and hope we can find a speedy WR/returner later.

Here is another consideration. Rodgers made an issue about the WR's not being on same page last year. I see in an interview a Cleveland Brown TE (I believe) stating all of their receivers and TE's have been meeting and working with Mayfield to work on their timing, etc.

I sure as hell hope Rodgers the highest paid player in the National Football League has been doing the same with his young WR,s.

I cannot see Rodgers doing that. He works out with his other interests in the offseason. That’s not a knock on him. Besides they all don’t even have a playbook to practice with. But as a fan I get what you are saying.

We don’t know what the Packers are going to do if there is a receiver on their wish list and they fall to them then don’t be surprised if that take them at 12 or 30 , we don’t know plus why wouldn’t they want to give Rodgers as many weapons as possible , could be TE and receiver in the first round. As far as Tim Boyle I don’t think he is an NFL caliber QB , I would not be surprised if the Packers pick up a vet floating out there. I would rather have Josh McCown than both Boyle and Kizer. The Defense is better already , imagine a world where the Packers get off the field on 3 rd down and feed the ball back to Rodgers several more times a game.

Perhaps the biggest improvement to the passing game is going to be the new offense. Schemes that help receivers get open as opposed to McCarthy's slow developing banana routes then relying on Rodgers to scramble and young receivers trying to figure where to break to. Lots of talent, size & athleticism on current WR roster. Love to see one of Iowa TE's and perhaps a slot receiver some where in mid rounds. Great moves in free agency to date. Future looking much brighter.

I think we should give the young receivers a chance to grow into the new system. Focus our draft picks on restocking the lines and fortifying the defense.

I personally believe that MVS is going to be a legitimate star before his rookie contract is up. ESB is going to be a very good to great receiver as well. I believe they both make the 2nd year jump.

Jury is out on Moore... but I think it's a long road in front of him with the foursome of DA, GA, MVS, and ESB. When you throw Kumero in there, the struggle for Moore is even tougher.

I am in agreement with most people here that we need a good slot receiver. We don't have one currently. Without one, I foresee a lot of disguised plays that put our RBs essentially working the slot.

It would be nice to find a guy in the draft who could play slot AND return kicks/punts... because Davis is a wasted roster spot.

I don't know who that would be though...

Tony Pollard a rb/wr from Memphis has 7 return touchdowns in his career. He seems to be a guy like Cobb or Montgomery who could play multiple positions and be a dynamic returner. In most mocks he is going in the 6th-7th rounds. Certainly would be worth a late round pick.

You can tell Moore is very talented and athletic if you watched him closely. Not sure what the issue is. Simply bad hands, more difficulty learning the offense than MVS and St. Brown? It seemed when he would finally play he was pressing. Maybe a little of all above?

I think he will be one of the more interesting players to watch this camp because he obviously is talented. Here is hoping he comes on like game busters!

How important will the slot receiver position be in MLF's offense? Two TE's and a RB leave room for only two WR's on the field. I am looking for the Packers to add at least one TE in the draft so they can carry at least 4 legitimate TE's on the 53 man roster. This minimizes the need to pick someone like Isabella whose main attribute is production from the slot.

Get two OL within the first 4 rounds so that the running game can flourish the way MLF wants it to. A successful running game opens up the passing game - a 180 from MM using the passing game to open up the running game. IF AR buys into the system, his passer rating should return to the 110 range from years ago.

Fant is a cross between a WR and TE. A true hybrid! He can play both spots, or on one play block and the next play go deep. He would really mess with a defense. Most Safeties and LB's couldnt keep up with him with his sub 4.5 speed.

The more I write about Fant the more I'm liking him. I could really see the value in LF's offense with him and the mismatches Rodgers could create with him. Will Fant be Gutey's luxury pick solidifying both the TE and WR corps? He is faster than Moore, Geronimo, and St. Brown I believe. Can you imagine a TE like Fant working the middle with the WR's on the outside?

Fant is starting to really grow on me. IMHO, I do not see one WR in round 1 who would have as much upside as Fant.

Adams is a star. I believe EQ will grow into a very good to great #2, and I think that will happen sometime this year. I love his size and hands. MVS can play the deep threat role and is only 4/100's of a second behind DK Metcalf in that role.
I think the only type of guy the Packers need is a quick shifty waterbug type slot guy in the mix. Andy Isabellas' quicks and shiftiness jump off the tape. I would be thrilled to add him to our WR group. Watch tape of the guy or even highlights and see what I mean. He is noticeably fast/quick on the field. 102 for 1698 yds. last year. Looks like a very, very tough cover.

1 - have drafted a lot of young talented WRs, just need to develop them

2 - properly utilizing the TEs on the team will vastly improve the performace of the entire offense

3 - the reality is you can't have the highest paid player in the game and not sacrafice somewhere else. Basic math. I love that GB management isn't buying rodgers new toys to play with.

We have two ancient warriors at the tight end position Lewis and Graham after them the position falls off a cliff. Rather than at wide receiver I wouldn't doubt if the Packers do what they have done the last couple of years at a position of need and draft 3. It was done 2 years ago at RB, last year at WR and now that we have a new HC who likes 2 TE sets why the not dip the ladle in and see what you scoop out. This is supposedly a good draft class at the TE position. Hockenson, Fant and Risner or a facsimle thereof could be on Lafleur's wish list.

I definitely think Kizer will be cut and Boyle will win the QB2 role, but before you go off on Gutey for trading Randall for Kizer keep in mind he was taking a flyer on a kid he felt had all the tools to be developed and it had been reported that many veteran players had urged the team to cut Randall as he was felt to be a cancer in the lockeroom. He was going to be cut with no compensation whatsoever. Better to get anything in a trade than nothing at all, especially with McCarthy's supposed ability to develop quarterbacks.

Speaking of that 2015 Draft, and speaking of our two tight ends who are a combine almost-70 years old:
