He’s lined up in the slot, on the line, and in the backfield. A versatile tight end could be a very useful weapon! If none of the wide receivers were jumping out at them why not go for this.

His versatility also speaks to the coaches trusting him in multiple positions, this is huge for NFL coaches. Belichick is constantly harping on "I need to trust you to put you out there"

We’re going to line up in double TE sets a lot so we need TEs that can block and catch. He seems to fit the bill.

Lewis, Sternberger, Deguara, and Looney. I like it.

Yup, pound the rock out of 12 personnel, there will usually be 2 WRs on the field. I dont think the "we need a WR!l We needs weapons ahhh!!!!" People understand what a personnel grouping is in football. It will typically be Adams and Lazard or Adams and Funchess.

Yeah, people that think a "pound the rock" approach out of 12 personnel is a relic of the 1980s are the ones that don't understand. All that passing game stuff really is just a fad. It will pass and we'll be back to 3rd yards and a cloud of dust football in 2020. Its a great idea to move up for a QB so he can turn around and hand the ball off.

Apologies in advance if I overloaded anyone's sarcasm detector.

The same Kyle Shannon whos team made a trade for a wide receiver mid season, has a top 2 receiving TE in the league (yes I know he can block), spent a high second round pick on a receiver in 2019, a first one this year, and has an actual Olympic level speedster at WR.

This draft is somewhat frustrating. Our D is still going to get run over - especially by the niners. We need another starting caliber CB and we didn't get more explosive on offense. We got a 4th rd RB/FB in the 2nd and and a 5-6th rd TE in the 3rd. .....am I wrong here? I hope so because I don't think this team improved over last years . I hate being negative , but I don't see us getting past the niners to get to the SB, and if we got there the Ravens or Chiefs would beat us. (I really like the Ravens draft, the rich get richer)

He runs sub-4.5 at 250 lbs. He is no FB. They are going to be big on offense, running out of 2 TE sets. They obviously have that plan in full motion, and it is also clear they like their existing wideouts more than we do. We all know intellectually that those wideouts take time....

Who are you talking about?
Deguara ran a 4.72 at 242 pounds.
Dillon ran a 4.53 and 247 pounds.

Perhaps about the WRs. Gute said he thought there was an outside chance of a WR falling to 62. Not sure if he meant Mims, who was selected 59th, just ahead of GB at 62. Would Gute have taken Mims over Dillon? We will never know.

Had he remained patient and let Love come to them at 30, they would have had the 4th round ammo to move up from #62 to get Mims when he started falling. Mims would help Rodgers, Love, Boyle or who ever else might line up at QB.

And what good is Love going to be with no weapons? One of the justifications I've seen for him is that his bad decisions in college were because he was surrounded by bad players. By the time he hits the field, Adams may very well be gone. Gute has declined to add anyone of substance from this historically strong WR class. Even with day 3 remaining, that ship has sailed.

If they want to be a running team, be one. Don't sweat the QB. Invest in ball carriers and their blockers. If they want to be a passing team, be one. Invest in the QB and give him the tools to succeed. But don't change course from Day 1 to Day 2.

Good points there. I'm hoping the plan starts to be more clear, but it does seem odd to draft a guy that people compare to Mahomes one day and then go old school run game the next day.

Also they must not think much of Tonyan or Sternberger to be drafting a TE over so many other needs.

That's not the illusion of complexity Hank. MLF belives that to be successful on offense you need to have the threat of BOTH the run and the pass. Dillion and Jones give us legitimate running threats with different styles.

For WR Gute signed Funchess, ESB is returning, maybe MVS will overcome his sophmore slump. What Gute is doing is draft and develop while Packer fans are giving up and looking for a new shiny toy.

I agree that the threat of both is important. Which is why I wanted the passing game to step up to the threat level of the run game. The collection of stiffs they have catching passes doesn't strike fear in any DC.

Drafting another running back doesn't increase the threat of the run in green bay.

Only a change at QB- either in personnel or attitude - will increase the threat of running the ball in GB.

The dude has a jump cut and spin move too. Freakish. I love Aaron Jones, he is special but I always feel he is injury prone. Slighter build. I am waiting for that play where a safety comes up to hit him and he explodes. I am glad we drafted a Mack truck to close games.

Well congratulations, you learned a new football term. That base personel consists of a 2nd round pick, a 1st round pick as of Thursday, an Olympic athlete, an all world TE, and tons and tons of speed. If you can't see how that creates mismatches and allows for more favorable matchups than Adams and lazard, or who ever else, that's not my problem

This draft has been pretty baffling. It would lead you to believe that they have a vet or two coming. Maybe a DL like Harrison? Tramon is now a need, most likely. I actually like that particular kind of RB for us. I see Lacy without the weight/conditioning/medical issues. Plus he’s faster. Planning ahead with another young TE works. for me too.

I’d still like to see a WR like Hightower or maybe a CB like Madre Harper or OL like Charlie Heck. Wondering if they can get back in the 4th for Hightower? The LB’s from Montana, Utah and Fresno State still possibilities too with the picks we have remaining.

The more I think about this, pulling a safety into the box to stop our run game will help our WRs. We obviously will be committing to the Lafleur TE heavy running game with Deguara / Lewis / Sternberger blocking and Dillon/ Jones /Williams pushing the rock. This will open up the passing game with the TEs and Adams / Lazard / Funchess.

Now we need some run stuffers on D.

I'm thinking Gute is REALLY missing Milt Hendrickson being in the same room as him, perhaps offering up some of that Ravens experience. Gute has TOTALLY lost his mind this draft completely ignoring the SEC or Big Ten Schools for example. Completely ignoring the teams who have won and won A LOT with top tier talent. Now I'm all for finding talent ANYWHERE, but to make THESE choices on a team who was 13-3 and in the NFCCG is just baffling IMO.

To go through 3 rounds and end up with these 3 picks is hard. I've lost almost all the faith I had in Brian Gutekunst. He threw away the Packers 4th for the right to move up and grab Love. He drafted a RB in the 2nd he could have probably gotten in the 3rd or 4th, and a TE I hadn't heard of. Now if I'm not mistaken Packers fans get to sit and wait until the 5th and HOPE a WR is still there since we GAVE away the 4th rounder.

You do realize many players from those conferences are also over drafted and never get second contracts correct? Also some players had offers from those schools and said no. I watch lots of BIG football as a Wisconsin fan. Ohio St. fans think their whole team is draftable.
This draft is in no way surprising to me. They want to run the ball, use PA out of 2 TE set and have players with positional versatility.

If you went to college to play football at Utah state and Cincinnati you were NOT recruited by the big SEC and Big 10 schools. Fact.

May not matter at all in the nfl but Jordan love was not recruited by the college football powers or he’d be playing for one.

Romo played at Eastern Illinois and Rodgers at Butte Community College. Carson Wentz was recruited by North Dakota St Fitzpatrick was recruited by Harvard. Flacco was recruited by Delaware. Roethlisberger was recruited by Miami U (not the U) Randy Moss by Marshall, Donald Driver by Alcorn St. Antonio Brown by central Michigan, I can go on and on and on and on and on

Here is the path to victory in 2020...pound them.

Run through them, run around them. Run traps. Run jet sweeps. Run off tackle. Run up the middle. Run screens. Run play action then surprise them with an occasional deep pass. But mostly, just pound them!

Oh, wait a minute....you thought I was talking about the Packers? No, no, no. Every team that PLAYS the Packers in 2020.

The more I see what the Packers are trying to do on offense the more I think there is a real possibility they let Bakhtiari walk. His strength is in pass pro and that was the MO for Packers offensive lineman. He is a capable run blocker as well but not one you give a massive 3rd contract to. The Offensive line could look drastically different in 2021

Absolutely. And if the next Superbowl will have love at QB, Bakh will be in his early 30s. Not that he can't be a great LT in 3/4 years, but lots of money spent in the meantime for a guy that is perfect for a passing offense

I don't get what management is doing here, but then again I never understood why they took Gary last year either. From where they were drafting I could see taking Love as their potential QB of the future. These last two picks were reaches and don't address holes team possesses. Who's playing the slot, who's other ILB, their DL gets dominated. Now Dillon could before their featured back after this season if they don't want to pay Jones. I was never big fan of Williams anyway, so Dillon should be their #2 this season.

I hope I'm proven wrong.

Between Keke and Gary, I think the front 6 of the defense is going to be much improved in 2020, even without adding anyone. They could still use a massive 330 lb run stuffer but those guys can be found on the UDFA market. I don't like that they think a playmaking LB is not necessary. But I've been saying that for 30 years. This draft was always about fixing the offense to me, so I'm not terribly upset they have drafted zero defenders.

However I question whether they have done anything of substance to fix the offense. I've been watching a lot of games on gamepass. It's amazing how much better the offense functions with just 2 legit WRs. And downright scary when they have 3. They have 1 legit WR that is starting to get a little long in the tooth. I will not be forgetting their choice to skip adding more WR help in a historically strong WR class anytime soon.

Who gives a crap what the base offense is? All I want is for ML to be given a full quiver of arrows to attack in whatever way a particular opponent is most vulnerable. That's what good coaches do. I believe ML is a good coach.
