Video: Rodgers To Nelson Beats The Blitz

Video of Rodgers beating a Woodson blitz by taking advantage of a mismatch of Hawk on Nelson.

I apologize for the quality of the video. With Corey gone I'm relying on my Flip. I caught the play below which is an example of something we've seen several times already so far in camp, a Rodgers to Nelson hookup over the middle. If you focus on the left side of the screen, you'll see Woodson blitz from his slot position where he starts over Nelson. When he flies in, Hawk drops back and takes Nelson, an obvious mismatch. What you don't see is the receiver running a fly pattern off to the left (the offense's right) which holds the safety, in this case rookie Morgan Burnett, just long enough to clear the space behind Hawk. It's a great play and Rodgers and Nelson have hit it a few times already in the first two practices.

Hawk actually played that pretty damn well if I may say so. Reading the summary I thought he was about to get owned but a WR barely beat a LB, something Nelson should be able to do every time in theory. Good on Hawk for making it close though.

That's a fair point. Didn't mean to impy he got "owned" just that anytime a QB sees a WR matched up on a LB, that's a matchup that favors the offense. The point I was trying to make is that without safety help, a good throw from Rodgers will win that play every time. Was more about the safety than the LB.

That pass is perfect. Hawk's coverage IMHO is very good. He just lacks the instincts to play the ball. But then again, he's not a CB.

Is James Jones even practicing? Seems like I only read about Nelson of the two.

Yes, Hawk played good underneath coverage! I think the issue here is that Burnett stayed with the receiver running the fly route for too long. As soon as the ball was in the air, he should've moved over to cover Nelson. This is not to say that he would've broken up the play, but it would've stopped Nelson dead in his tracks!

It was nice to see Hawk keep up with a WR, but to have Burnett and Peprah close enough to level Nelson after the catch might show a sluggish break after the throw by two safeties.
