Week One Snap Counts
The snap counts tell a number of stories. The big stories might well be that it looks like Jenkins and Wagner can play right tackle, and that Runyan and Patrick can play some guard. However, there are some other stories buried in the snap counts listed below.
Name | Snaps | % | ST |
Jenkins | 78 | 100 | 7 - 27% |
Bakhtiari | 78 | 100 | 2 - 8% |
Linsley | 78 | 100 | 0 - 0 |

Ervin | 14 | 18 | 8 - 31% |
Dillon | 5 | 6 | 0 - 0 |
22 played Off. |
Tonyan got as many snaps as Lewis and Sternberger combined. At least for now, one could argue he is the #1 tight end although he was not targeted in the passing game. Deguara saw two targets and caught a pass for twelve yards, while just one pass was directed towards Sternberger, who had no receptions. Deguara got a lot of snaps for a rookie. Including Deguara as a tight end, the Packers played on average 1.49 tight ends per play.
Three wide receivers got all the snaps with the fourth wide receiver, Malik Taylor, getting just a single snap. Some posters have been suggesting that would be the case in 2020. One game is a small sample but so far it looks that way. Ervin got more snaps than I thought he would while Dillon got fewer. The Packers passed on about 59 percent of their plays.
Name | Snaps | % | STs |
Amos | 52 | 100 | 3 - 12% |
King | 51 | 98 | 0 - 0% |
Alexander | 49 | 94 | 0 - 0% |
Savage | 46 | 88 | 5 - 19% |
Sullivan | 36 | 69 | 11 - 42% |
Redmond | 24 | 46 | 18 - 69% |
Scott | 3 | 6 | 6 - 23% |
Jackson | 2 | 4 | 14 - 54% |
Hollman | 0 | 0 | 10 - 38% |
Kirksey | 52 | 100 | 2 - 8% |
P. Smith | 43 | 83 | 0 - 0 |
Z. Smith | 43 | 83 | 2 - 8% |
Gary | 32 | 64 | 1 - 4% |
Barnes | 15 | 29 | 8 - 31% |
Burks | 3 | 6 | 18 - 69% |
Summers | 19 - 73% | ||
Lowry DE | 39 | 75 | 8 - 31% |
Keke DE | 29 | 56 | 3 - 12% |
Lancaster NT | 23 | 44 | 10 - 38% |
Clark NT | 15 | 29 | 1 - 4% |
Galaei DE | 9 | 17 | 0 - 0 |
Garvin DE | 6 | 12 | 2 - 8% |
22 played Def. |
Krys Barnes played over Burks, who apparently was healthy given that he played 18 special teams snaps. Barnes played well according to Pro Football Focus, who gave him the highest defensive grade. Some readers might remember a tweet in the Practice Round-Ups from Andy Herman in which he noted that he could make a case for putting Barnes on the 53-man roster. The Packers played 1.35 inside linebackers per play on average (Kirksey, Barnes and Burks).
That is also a high number of snaps for defensive linemen. NFL gamebook listed Galaei and Garvin as defensive ends (and Lovett as a QB), but even excluding them from the defensive line the Packers would have played 2.04 defensive linemen per play. Gary and Zadarius Smith probably combined to play 14 snaps on the defensive line, which would increase that from 2.04 to 2.3 defensive linemen and to a higher number if Garvin and Galaei played on the line at times.
Name | Snaps | % | ST |
Crosby | 15 - 58% | ||
Scott | 8 - 31% | ||
Bradley | 8 - 31% |
Fans will have to wait to see if these playing-time trends continue. If there are other interesting stories to infer from the snap counts, please note them in the comments!

I'm guessing Lovett was the upback for our 1 punt, so since he calls the snap, he gets a QB play?

Interesting. Very plausible, but I certainly don't know.

Since Lovett played QB at college, it could be that he's still classified that way by the counters.

I chose to use a photo of Tonyan because he apparently was the #1 TE for Green Bay, at least in week one. That surprised me. Barnes was also a pleasant surprise, and I considered using his photo. I also considered using Jenkins, since it appears he can play guard and right tackle, and presumably his main position in college, center. I also considered Runyan and Wagner.

Clearly Tonyan's blocking must be at least OK...or good enough that the coaching staff doesn't see him as a liability.
To pull Barnes off the PS and start him over Burks tells us everything we need to know about Burks at this juncture.

True and unfortunate for Burks. We could use his speed. I wonder what the issue is with him.

There is clearly a disconnect between the coaching staff and Gute on Burks......Pettine wants to start a UDFA rookie that did not make the team over Burks...........

GMs will always try to save face, but Burks is taking up space that another guy should occupy. He was never a real ILB in college and shows little aptitude for the position or desire to be an aggressor. Barnes knows the game.
Looks like Jackson cannot even hold the dime spot with Redmond getting the looks. Move on.

Ya - Hate to see that but you make a great point. hey as a fan I just want someone who can play. If we found someone then fantastic.
Do you think Summers is just a ST stud and last resort ILB? He was passed over as well, unless I'm missing something.

Is Oren Burkes going to be traded or even cut? Early on, I thought maybe he had a jersey number chage. 58 was flying around making plays. Until they mentioned Barnes' name, I was hoping Burkes finally arrived wearing a different jersey! An obvious problem with no preseason games to learn who's who. GPG

No, Burks is disappointing on defense, but he's easily one of the best ST players on the roster. That makes him more valuable than any late round pick they might (but probably wouldn't) get!
jannesbjornson
September 15, 2020 at 08:23 pm
Barnes is # 51, Kirksey is # 58....Martin is # 54. These are the only ILBs that you need to worry about remembering their Jerseys.

I think the stat lines for guys like Burks, Summers, Jackson & Sternberger are somewhat telling. My question is with seven tackles in 15 snaps, why isn't Barnes playing more?
splitpea1
September 15, 2020 at 12:21 pm
He probably will be--there's certainly an opportunity for the second ILB to show what he can do, and if Barnes keeps it up, the job may be his. Just for the sake of comparison, first round picks Queen and Murray and had 8 tackles in their debut (Queen also with a sack and forced fumble), in, respectively, more than triple and quadruple the number of snap counts.

Probably because they play base D only about 30% of the time. I don’t see him unseating Kirksey.

My guess is it's a combination of the gameplan and ability to contribute on special teams. I'd be surprised if the Packers run many formations that require 4 WRs on the field; even if they go 4-wide they have Ervin, Jones, Sternberger and Tonyan who can all play out there and offer more versatility. If the snaps aren't available on offense then it's a matter of contributing to special teams, and I'm going to assume Taylor is the better contributor in that area. He probably is still the team's WR4, but as long as the teams top 3 wideouts stay healthy they just might not need him right now.
Thegreatreynoldo
September 15, 2020 at 11:30 am
Taylor played 14 special teams snaps, so that fits. I am thinking they try to get Lovett on the 53 if and when a spot on the 53 opens up for the same reason. Remember, teams can only promote Lovett twice per season from the PS. If they want him on the 53 for a third time, the team has to sign him to the 53 and make a corresponding cut or IR type of thing.

At some point they'll need to do something with Montravius Adams. He's never healthy and not very good even when he is.

This was supposed to be make-or-break years for Burks and Jackson. A pretty inauspicious start for both.
Really interesting that Deguara got twice as many snaps as Sternberger.
Wildcomet
September 15, 2020 at 10:51 am
I'm surprised too. I'm wondering if Sternberger is being slowed by having had COVID still (a relative of mine who got it didn't fully get his breathing and endurance back until months after the virus passed) or if the others are just truly ahead of him.
I'm impressed with how Deguara seems to have picked up the playbook to be playing this much in different roles on Week 1 with the abbreviated camp and lack of pre-season.

I don't know what the downvote is about. Burks didn't beat out Barnes and probably not Martin either. PFF wrote that Barnes played 16 snaps with 8 in coverage. That's a lot of tackles as RC noted. The team didn't really need Jackson against Cousins, I suppose. Or maybe just writing anything bad gets a down vote.
Deguara might not be playing the same position as Sternberger, although IIRC Jace played some H-Back last year. Somewhere I saw what Deguara played described as an F-Back and wondered if it was a typo or just something I'm unaware of - I think it was a quote of LaFleur.
13TimeChamps
September 15, 2020 at 12:58 pm
I guess I was just more surprised at the few number of snaps that Jace got.
It's good to know they have as much trust in Deguara this early, particularly with the truncated offseason/preseason.
As far as the downvotes, I get at least one for every comment I make. I don't even pay attention anymore.

IMO, downvotes are either:
1. Dash
2. Vikings trolls
3. Children living in their parents basements without enough courage, maturity & intelligence to post opposing opinions.
I can see no reason whatsoever for valid websites to include up or down votes on their forum posts. It serves no purpose.

As far as I can tell, they were more willing to use safeties than Jackson, but if he is now an outside specialist, he won’t get many snaps as long as Alexander and King are healthy.
Has we not gone to prevent D and maintained our advantage, we might have seen more from him and others. Another reason why Pettine should be talked to about that tendency.

F-back is basically an H back with more blocking responsibilities. That position is basically a tight end/slot back hybrid. It’s a player who may be called on to block, like a typical tight end or lineman, but is quick enough to take a hand off or shovel pass, or go out for a pass. They almost "fake" a block if that makes sense. They usually line up either in the back field or where a tight end would line up, but just off the line. Sometimes they motion a half yard "off" the line. Deguara is pretty smooth in his routes.....it is making sense why he went 3rd round. MLF had every intention of Deguara playing right away. You will see some presnap motion from Deguara as well.
If you watch some highlights of Ertz or Fleener at Stanford, they often lined up as an F back. Kyle Juszczyk is the only other true F-back in the league I can think of

Very bad sign for Burks....less so for Jackson just simply because of the personnel the Vikings use, Jackson was bound to play less as he is not a nickel player at all....we will see for sure next week....Jackson will definitely have more snaps against Detroit

Thegreatreynoldo

It is possible that Redmond got some snaps as the hybrid ILB, taking Greene's role. IDK, in part because due to circumstance I was quite a distance from the TV when I watched the game and didn't feel like I was able to really see the nuts and bolts type of things that well.

The biggest surprise to pretty much everyone was Barnes.
To me the impact he made in the game made it feel like he played more then 15 snaps. The reason why is he made the most of those 15 snaps. He was credited with 4 solo tackles, 2 assists and 2 TFL's. In 15 snaps. That is incredible, especially for an UDFA who didn't even make the initial 53.
I am looking forward to seeing more from him!

If I had read your comment before I published this article I probably would have used a photo of Barnes instead of Tonyan. I am a sucker for a dual threat TE. I acknowledge that bias.
Maybe Kamal Martin will be allowed to fully heal or at least not be rushed back. I kind of wondered given the tweets about the "pop" in his hits if Martin was more suited to back up Kirksey and perhaps replace him in 2021. Good problems to have!

lol. nice. Tonyan was a good choice. Though I was kind of expecting him to have a bigger impact in the passing game. I do think it will be coming though. They found a weakness against the Vikings and kept attacking it.
I'm still not sure what we have in Barnes, but I know I was impressed! The play he made on the screen on Cook was probably the highlight play for me. He diagnosed it fast, got behind the blockers and made the play on a very tough RB. That play was a highlight play for sure! I can't really remember the last time we had a LB make a play like that.
I'm excited to see Martin as well. It will be interesting to see what happens the next few games and how Pettine decides to use these guys.
Then we have to add in Raven Greene. How does he get mixed in.
I am excited to see what happens with our defense.

I did see some numbers, might have been packerswire quoting PFF or a poster named Bmore on another site. I remember that Davante and MVS were both over 3 yards/route run, which is elite.

If Barnes can cover it could be one way to improve the run defense by leaving an ILB in and not switching for a DB. We all like RGreene but he's not an ILB and these poor safeties in the box are nuts. Those are biiiggg men they need to bring down. Injuries seem to be the norm. I really have no clue if Barnes has coverage skills up to the challenge, interesting to find out.

I think Barnes effectively took over the gap plugging duties. He did well after the first series. It may not be the best use of our number one ILB when Barnes is on the field, but it could have been a lot worse and I’m glad we have him.

Barnes PT was a big surprise over Burks. So, I watched his game against USC and other video’s and it showed a guy who seems to be good at everything but not great. Positives are his larger hands and arm length which he showed by getting off of OL and make the tackle. He also showed decent coverage skills and seems to have good instinct, which he will need as I didn’t see an explosive athlete. That said great instincts and drive can be better then a great RAS score at times.....IE: Burks.
I’m no scout, so take it for what it’s worth. Certainly a good first game.
jannesbjornson
September 15, 2020 at 08:11 pm
Positives are that he was a four year player and captain for his squad. Watched his play over the past three years and he is in on the action and Knows the position. Not a tweener safety/rover, whatever.

I wonder if Burks can be traded for possibly a D lineman ? it was good to see Gary get a nice snap count , thanks
Coldworld
September 15, 2020 at 01:15 pm
Would you trade for him?
A 3rd year special teamer who can barely stay healthy based upon last Sunday and one whom a UDFA who didn’t make the roster initially supplanted on opening day. Honestly, maybe better special teamers on the PS. I can’t see a trade and I’m at a loss to see how he survives unless there is something we do not know.
It’s pretty clear Martin beat him out, maybe Bolton last year: a guy who will be available when he passes his physical. We signed an ILB to the PS who has special teams skills and now Barnes is up there. Summers is a better ST player and healthier. For all I know, Summers is ahead of him too despite being a developmental prospect (and cheaper).
About as dark a prognosis as there can be based on what I can see. I would not trade for his contract.
