What Affect Will Aaron Rodgers’ Lack of Offseason Participation Have On His 2021 Season?

While the Packers and their fans are waiting to see if Aaron Rodgers returns to the team for the 2021 season, another question comes to mind: what affect will Rodgers’ lack of offseason work have on his performance this season?

So far, we know that Rodgers did not have his usual informal practice sessions with his receivers as he has in the past. He also did not participate in any of the team’s OTAs.

We also know that Rodgers has spent time this offseason hosting “Jeopardy” for two weeks, took a trip to Hawaii with his fiancée and competed in a golf competition with Tom Brady and some professional golfers earlier this month.

There really isn’t any problem with Rodgers doing these other things when he isn’t playing football, but the question is, will his lack of preparation this offseason hurt his performance once the season gets under way?

Think back to a year ago. Even while the Covid-19 pandemic was limiting typical offseason activities and eliminating OTAs and preseason games, Rodgers was dedicated and prepared for the season in his typical intense and detailed way.

For example, we know that Rodgers spent time studying film of his 2011 MVP season and compared it with game film from 2019. When he did that, he was able to pick out some differences in the way he was doing things that helped his game in 2020.

Rodgers also worked extensively with head coach Matt LaFleur as they continued to tweak the offense and introduce more concepts that the second-year coach wanted to add to the playbook. Rodgers and LaFleur worked together to keep some of the plays that played to the quarterback’s strengths and figured out how to best incorporate new plays that the coach wanted to add. This helped Rodgers improve his relationship with his coach and prepare for the season.

Rodgers also did extra work on his own body. He lifted more weights to strengthen his leg muscles to help improve his ability to drive the ball on longer and sideline patterns to compensate for the possibility of diminishing arm strength as he is getting older.

All that extra work paid off last year. Rodgers had one of the best seasons of his Hall of Fame career and won his third league MVP award. Rodgers set new career highs with 48 touchdown passes and a 70.7 percent completion percentage. He also had the second highest quarterback rating of all-time with a 121.5, second only to his own 2011 season when he had a 122.5 rating.

This year, we don’t know exactly what Rodgers did to prepare for the coming season, but it doesn’t seem like he’s been putting in quite as much preparation as he did a year ago. While Rodgers knows the playbook as well as anybody and has a great memory for the game, there is no substitute for actual prep time. The fact that he works so hard off the field as well as on is one of the reasons for his career-long dominance.

The difference between success and failure in the NFL is a fine line as is the difference between a good season and a great season. Rodgers entered 2020 extremely prepared despite the obstacles that he and the rest of the league were facing. This year, it is unclear if he has put in the offseason prep work that he usually does.

Rodgers is now 37-years-old. As athletes get older, they need to put in more time to prepare both mentally and physically for the grind of an NFL season. A potential lack of offseason preparation could hurt Rodgers on the field and it could also make him more susceptible to injuries when and if he does finally report to the team.

It is also possible that his timing with his receivers may not be as sharp in training camp or even early in the season. This may be an even bigger issue with new receivers on the roster like Devin Funchess or Amari Rodgers who Rodgers has not worked with yet.

Obviously, the first issue is whether Rodgers decides to report to training camp on time at the end of this month. If he does play for the Packers this season, the organization and the fans must hope that this stressful and unusual offseason doesn’t undermine his performance on the football field.

To me (and it’s early) it doesn’t look like he is preparing at all for NFL football. Of course we don’t know much of anything about what he does during the off-season even when he is planning on reporting. Perhaps that’s part of his plan. But if he thinks that it will change the mind of management he is wrong. This is an impasse that won’t be resolved soon,

He looks to be in perfect shape, judging by his physique at the golf match. Over use of the body as you age is pointless. He could walk on the field a week before opener and deliver the same accuracy.

Good point.

Why do veteran players get sessions off during the season? Extra Recovery time - They already have the fundamentals sorted (else they wouldn’t be veterans - they’d be ex-nfl players).

Frankly, the only thing that stopped Rodgers in the end last year was the mental game. Amari Rodgers and Funchess are the only new skill position pieces anyway that are truly hurting from Aaron Rodgers not being there.

Not that it matters (or counts), but I’m personally giving him a pass to get his head right for his potential “last dance” in Green Bay - if he decides to return.

Jann, I get your point and respect it. Yet there is being in shape and there is being in “ football shape”. I expect that he can still throw the ball well and has recovered from many of the aches and pains from a long football season. However, I really doubt that he has his timing down and can play well with only a week of practice.

He'll report during training camp and play in '21 in GB. He has no options besides that other than sitting the season, losing A LOT of money and a year or what is left of his career. Next year, depending how Love looks and how Rodgers plays is the most likely time to trade him and go seperate ways. If Love doesn't impress and Rodgers plays like an MVP again, then he probably wont be traded next year either.

I assume this article implies that Rodgers will actually show up and play for the Packers this year ? If by some miracle he does report/show up and is as dedicated as he always has been in the past, then I think the effect is minimal at best from a performance standpoint. That is a big IF he shows up.

As a Packer fan I'm extremely disappointed that none of the packer wide receivers or TE, except for St Brown have gotten together with Love this offseason to Throw, go over plays whatever the case may be. I'm pulling for love to succeed, and really don't want to hear from the fanbase or any Packer wide receiver or tight end cry or bitch when things don't go their way, because I haven't heard or seen any of them reach out to Love to get on the same page.

I for one am proud of Jordan Love busting his butt off to get ready

Its not at all a big if, that he reports! Its only a matter of when! He has very few options and by far the best one is to play in GB in '21 and play very well. Learn to think for yourself and quite listening to the media driven garbage.

Love is busting his butt just like Rodgers did when he sat for 3 yrs!

I think Rodgers will show as training camp is ending in early August. He shouldn't need lots of time to get in game shape assuming he has been working out. It would have been nice to get reps with the rookies and other players though. I give credit to Love for working out with Watson and Fields this week when there is no formal training. Rodgers should start week #1, and Love will be better prepared to take the field in the event of an injury.

With the OL in flux, it would be better for Rodgers to show up at the beginning of training camp. As the no.1 he needs to get an understanding of who his center is and what the strengths of the players in the line are. Otherwise, he is an injury waiting to happen. That is, if he shows up.

I suppose it all depends on how much new is being installed. Rodgers will have missed all of that. The rest of it is chemistry. Of course, if he isn’t coming back, it doesn’t mean a thing. If he’s traded, it’s possibly not a bad thing.

This seems like an issue: Amari won't get any work with Aaron if 12 holds out all the way to opening day or close to it.
We've all got high hopes for Amari, but he'll be delayed on his way into becoming a real #2 if he doesn't get to work on timing with the QB.

Should Rodgers decide to show up at some point, expect some comment like this.

"It's understandable we're struggling a little in the pass game, and having trouble with people running the wrong routes. It's important to have reps to develop chemistry with the new receivers."

Ya think?

The offseason up till now will have no or very little effect on Rodgers. But the more he misses in training camp the more it will start to effect the 1st 1/4 of the season. If he only has 2 wks of camp and maybe one preseason game, it will affect him slightly the first 4 games or so at most. Once week 5 or 6 hits it won't really be noticeable that he missed the offseason. He's been thru it all and seen everything and he will be back in sync w/ his receivers relatively quickly even if he misses a large part of the training camp.

If he and the Packers are unfortunate because he misses 1/2 of training camp it might cost them a game that they should have won.

Stroh,
If AR misses good portion of camp LF should publically announce Love the starter those first 2 games with Rodgers having to both demonstrate he is playing better than Love, and he is completely in synch with the receivers. Anything less will be on LF as in my mind it would be unacceptable. Anything less would also send a bad message to the team, and Love.

Personally, I could see AR making a statement by skipping a few days to a week of camp but he is going to definitely be there early enough that there is zero chance he is going to miss a game, nor does he want to lose a game early and everyone pointing the finger at him for the reason.

This was an article I saw earlier in July where Rodgers and other NFL players were running the hills of Malibu. I have NO doubt Rodgers is staying in great shape.

One thing about Rodgers is he's extremely smart and EVERYTHNG he does is calculated and thought out way in advance. He'll be 38 in December and no matter what he says about playing as long as Brady, he KNOWS there's no guarantees. The Packers aren't trading him and he knows it. He also knows the Packers are his BEST shot at a ring THIS year. He'll be in camp this year and he'll be in shape.

It sometimes really wonder if there isn't more animosity between LaFluer and Rodgers than is let on due to the kicking of the FG in Championship game with Rodgers feeling there is a lack of trust by LaFleur towards Rodgers! It would seem to make sense especially with the ribbing Brady gives Rodgers about it, making it seem Brady knows more from Rodgers than the public knows! Just a thought if this is what is the real reason for this split.

GB had to kick the FG because AR refused to throw to any receiver not named Adams. His own actions forced MLF to go for the FG. It's entirely on AR, not on MLF. Of course, His Ego thinks otherwise.

Rodgers should have refused to leave the field on 4th down. LaFleur probably should have gone for it and when he didn't Rodgers should have said... NO! The ball stays I'm my hands to decide this!

I count them both in error. LaFleur for not having the guts to go for it and Rodgers for not over-ruling his coach and refusing to leave the field.

Rodgers is damn near the pickiest QB in the league, glaring at WRs who don't do things exactly as he wants them, avoiding throwing to WRs who aren't exactly on the same page as him.

Do you know how WRs get on the same page as their QB? How they learn to detail their game the way their QB would like it to look?

Spoiler Alert: they spend extra time taking as many throws from the QB as possible.

I'm glad Rodgers is working on his mental health this offseason. But this guy is gonna be extra prickish this season with the WRs who aren't on the same page as he is, and it's going to be because he wasn't doing the extra work that gets those guys there during OTAs and mini camps.

Or it could be that at 37, he's "been there, done that" so much he doesn't need a lot of prep time. He has excellent chemistry with Adams, has developed a strong feeling for Lazard and Tonyan, and has been getting more in sync with MVS. Does he really need to go through the motions repeatedly to be ready? Or does he need time to recharge his batteries and get ready for the long grind he knows all too well after all those seasons as a starter. Add in the extra game this year, and Rodgers will be fine. Or he won't. I'm not losing any sleep over this, because I trust Rodgers to do what is necessary to get ready. And I also believe if/when he comes back, it'll be to "stick it to the team" by winning the SB this year. Daring them to trade him at that point. That would be the sweetest revenge he could get.

To clarify what I meant by "stick it to the team". In this case, that would be Gutekunst, who drafted his heir apparent and lit a fire of resentment under Rodgers, who responded with an MVP season. So, being SB MVP would be icing on the cake.

Gutey has to think future. Players live in the here and now. They just have different agendas and responsibilities. Neither did anything wrong. Rodgers is trying to use what leverage he has to get what he wants. It's just that simple IMO.

Ricky,
For the past 16 seasons us fans have learned the hard way in order for the Packers to even get to the SB let alone win it is for the team as a whole to remain relatively healthy and to play well. Even with AR having an MVP season and Adam's breaking team records it wasnt nearly enough to win the SB.

Let's assume the GBP's finally win the SB this year, and AR plays well. However, in the process we also see Love play extremely well in camp, pre-season, and while filling in for Rodger's during the regular season. With all the 2021 drama between AR and the FO, combined with the fact Rodgers would be 38 turning 39 years old in 2022 Id trade him if the team could get a sufficient number of talented players, and select draft choices. Eliminating his attitude and salary cap hit I'd be whistling Dixie unloading the diva and welcoming a wave of new talent to pair up with Love. Teams just dont win multiple SBs in a row. Take the SB and fully embrace the Love era, particularly if the Pack obtain a number of talented players and high draft choices.

Rodgers will most likely show up a week late to camp to make his little statement to the NFLPA that long time vets shouldn’t have to report until August.

Also; you know he needs his “mental health” break because he hasn’t had enough vacation. You know like all us working stiffs get our 6 months of vacation time for our mental health so we can hang out in Hawaii, Napa Valley, the Kentucky derby, Montana golf tournaments, Peru or with the Dali Lama.
It’s nice that we all get our long vacations from the wear and tear and rigors of work.

And of course he has to make his little statement how his feelings are hurt that he has only been paid a paltry 260 million in his Packers career, poor Aaron.
Will he show up? Hell yes! Will he play well? Hell yeah!
Will the Packers win the Super Bowl Hell Yeah!!

Then you should have aspired to a career that allows or offers you the ability and availability to have and do such. Often do we hear fans screaming about the physical abuse players suffer and need time to recuperate and you suggest, in a manner, that they should be holding down other jobs as their predecessors had to decades ago, however, the salaries that FANS readily accept for players says otherwise. Would you?

If you want to hate him, hate him. But he didn’t drop crap. That was just bad reporting by a bad reporter on rumors. He even admitted it. But still Rodgers has a secret plan. Whatever

get your facts straight or don't you care about that...Rodgers didn't leak anything before the draft..the reporter decided to and admitted it was only hisself who did it...

"Just cause it’s acceptable now a days for guys to were dresses doesn’t mean we all should."

Well, he was sporting that spiffy man-bun though. Very manly!

"You stand up for yourself when people lie to you. You call them out."

That's just it...he hasn't called ANYONE out. I'd respect him more if he did.
And what did anyone lie to him about?

He wasn't lied to. The GM and Rodgers just have different agendas and responsibilities.

He is standing up to try to get what he wants. That's all this is about.

How interesting will things get if Rodgers doesn’t show up and Love lights it up in the preseason?

Won't change much. Rodgers still gives them the best chance to win regular season games and get in the playoffs.

There's been another Rodgers and the only thing that exploded was the Rodgers that couldn't play football, less the fans who believed and tagged him great from his arrival. His name was Richard.

Oddly, this Richard Rodgers guy who can't play football is still being paid as a professional football player in the NFL to this day. How bad can he be?

I don’t really care that Rodgers isn’t talking, what I don’t care for is his Dick of an agent David Dunn leaked all this BS during the draft and afterwards to inflict maximum damage to the Packers FO.

It made the whole organization look like a bunch of buffoons which hurts the Packers brand and perception around the NFL.

The Packers have treated Aaron with respect and rewarded Rodgers handsomely and he should treat the organization with that same respect.

If Rodgers does come back, I just wonder about his commitment. He’s a competitive guy, so my gut tells me that he would be all in 100%. And I don’t think that he wants to let down his teammates either. But I think if he does come back, then we all expect him to be the same Aaron Rodgers…..which is almost impossible based on the baggage that he has been carrying the last few months.

Rodgers will be ready to roll day 1. What I worry about is injury, it seems all these guys that stay away from camp, hold out etc.. wind up with pulled groins, pulled hammy's etc... which could derail a Super Bowl run.

Gil, Thanks for the article.

The thing that worries me the most is that his actions could indicate that he heart is not in it for the Green Bay Packers. In my opinion, any professional football player who goes about his approach to the season "Half-Hearted" will never improve. This is the first year to my knowledge that Aaron has not participated in the off season sessions. Remember the year that he changed his eating habits and exercised to lower his body fat? Or when he worked with his receivers during the off season. To my knowledge, we have seen none of that. That worries me.

The only thing I’m concerned with is the defense. New coach and scheme plus unknowns in the middle of the defense. Rodgers speculation so far takes us nowhere. We’ll know a lot more in just under 3 weeks. I think we’re all hoping for the best outcome for the team.

The defense seemed to have improved over the course of the season. Of course there were hiccups at key times but I felt that the trend was upwards. Perhaps it’s just a hope but I think that the defense will improve with the new DC and draft picks.

Odds are he shows up at some point and gets injured because he’s not in football shape and Jordan Love is the quarterback the rest of the season.

"Injury" could happen whether or not he is actually injured.

Just waiting for October, and hoping for truth.
