What Does the Mecole Hardman Signing Really Mean?
The speedy receiver might be more of a snack than a meal for the Packers.
By Kevin Gibson

Since NFL free agency opened last week, Packers fans have been hungry for big free-agent additions to fill positions of need.
As we well know, many were wishing for a DK Metcalf miracle acquisition, a Trey Hendrickson trade or a Davante Adams homecoming. And then GM Brian Gutekunst signs Kansas City Chiefs castoff Mecole Hardman.
Not exactly a big splash.
Consider: Over a six-year career, Hardman has hauled in 178 passes for just over 2,300 yards and 16 touchdowns. Last season, he caught a whopping 14 passes total, and didn’t even amass 100 yards receiving. He rushed 5 times for another 62 yards and a touchdown. And he was rendered inactive during the postseason, relegated to watching from the sidelines.
So, Hardman is not exactly a satiating signing for a team that seemingly needs a placeholder for field-stretching weapon Christian Watson.
But let’s take a look at the positives. At his combine in 2019, Hardman amassed a respectable 8.31 RAS and ran a blazing 4.33 40 (good for a 9.99 RAS in the category). Those look like Green Bay Packers numbers.
Meanwhile, the 5-10, 183-pound speedster was a second team All-Pro as a kick returner in 2019. Dude has three Super Bowl rings. A career highlight came when he caught the game-winning touchdown in overtime for a walk-off, 25-22 Chiefs win over the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.
And as recently as the 2021 season, Hardman tallied 59 receptions for 693 yards and two touchdowns. He registered 8 drops in his second season (sound familiar?), but otherwise he has relatively reliable hands when targeted, having dropped only 10 other passes over his six-year career. He’s aggressive and elusive with the ball in his hands, and he’s still quite spry at 27 years old.
For anyone who’s disappointed in the acquisition, that’s only fair. If you’re licking your lips in anticipation of a juicy sirloin steak, and the waiter places a ground chuck patty in front of you, well, it’s a letdown.
Hey, at least it’s not an Impossible burger.
Let’s approach it another way. Keisean Nixon looks to be playing more in the base defense and, following the 2024 season, proclaimed he didn’t want to return kickoffs any longer.
"CB1 is not doing kick returns,” Nixon announced to reporters in January. “That's just what it is."
OK, then. And cross your collective fingers, maybe Hardman will also relieve Jayden Reed of at least some of his punt return duties to lessen the burden on his body. For his career, Hardman has averaged 23.8 yards on 45 kick returns, while averaging 9.2 yards on 89 punt returns. So, he definitely can be a useful addition on special teams.
He’s not 6-4 like Christian Watson, but at least Hardman does add a needed speed element to the wide receiver room. Obviously, Hardman is not intended to be a plug and play Watson fill-in. He is, however, a speedy guy who will have to be accounted for when he is on offense.
That, and we also know Matt LeFleur likes to get his receivers involved in the run game. Watch a few highlights on Hardman as a runner and the possibilities suddenly become at least mildly interesting. On land and through the air, LaFleur will find a way to utilize the speedy wideout.
That said, the Packers have given no indication how they intend to utilize Hardman, but trust that there’s a plan – it wasn’t a signing just to sign someone. It certainly wasn’t meant to appease an ever-toxic Packers Twitter.
No, the Hardman pick-up only ramped up the unrest over at what is now called X (don’t get me started), with one genius even whining that this signing renders Nixon “useless.”
Signing the veteran Hardman is simply for depth, and on a presumably cheap one-year contract. I fully expect another WR to come in the draft, I fully expect the offense to get an infusion of tight end targets in the week-to-week game plans, and the truth is, it's even remotely possible Hardman doesn't even make the 53 when it’s all said and done. If that’s the case, all the gnashing of teeth will have gone for naught.
But it’s still better to have chopped steak than to go completely hungry.

Remotely possible Hardman doesn't make the 53? I believe it is only a 50/50 proposition...depending on Watson's recovery track, Doubs all clear for head injuries, Wicks and Reed playing with velcro hands, and the ability the rookie receiver(s?) bring to the team.
Hardman's straight line speed has not translated into elite play, or even steady production. He may be fast but he can't seem beat NFL DBs routinely.
So much more to a reception than just speed. I don't know how he has perfected the route trees, competes for balls, if he is as quick as he is fast, how he blocks, and catches his targets sans drops. Those 5 attributes are more important for NFL receivers than straight line speed.
A 4.5 WR who does the above 5 well will have a big advantage over a 4.3 player who doesn't.
I think this is a more kick the tires signing given the one K and not a very big investment for a 5 year veteran in his prime.

I don’t think Hardman has any relevance to Watson. He is not an X or a perimeter guy. As a receiver he’s a slot. We already have speed at slot, he’s just a tad faster and smaller.
Hardman is a quality punt returner and kick returner with decent hands who can play some gadget and fill in competently if there’s an injury during a game to the slot or which forced that slot to move. He can play in a few situational formations that scheme him open and offer gadget alternatives. That’s it. That’s all he’s ever done. A good returner who can help out in games in emergency and have a few designed calls.
If he stays healthy he could free Reed and Nixon from returns. Particularly for Reed on punts, that may be an upgrade and better ensure Reed is fresher and stays healthy. Melton didn’t contribute much last year so it’s not a big loss on offense if his spot goes to a returner.
However, part of the reason for that may be that LaFleur seemed to abandon conventional slot play to a large extent. Reed had a ridiculously deep average depth of target and that wasn’t because others were running the slants etc instead. Those are the majority of plays that Hardman has made, outside of the occasional surprise deep route getting him space behind. Something LaFleur wasn’t good at succeeding with with Melton or Teed with either (or any player in the middle over his entire tenure).
A good and presumably cheap, option to add options on the 90 and perhaps mildly upgrade returns while protecting Reed and Nixon. That’s it absent Hardman suddenly becoming a completely different proposition than he ever has been. That’s why he’s been a near minimum salary player for a while.

"Veteran leadership."
Somehow that has escaped mention.
I have seen this guy play on some really good teams, and do very well. Maybe something about that can rub off on our WR room? That would have value even if he never plays a snap.
I greatly prefer the idea of a durable Marshawn Lloyd returning than someone under 190#, especially with the current rules.

I would say there's more than a "remote possibility" that Hardman doesn't make the team. He seems like a roster bubble guy to me. He hasn't had a reasonably productive season since 2021, and the Packers are likely to draft at least one wide receiver and possibly two.
Maybe Hardman could take Bo Melton's spot in the offense, which is a tiny role. Returning kicks and punts may be his best hope of making the roster, but he hasn't done much of that in the past several years. His heyday as a kick returner was his rookie season.

I'd agree with you and LP in that Hardman has a very limited role on this team that could easily be filled by a rookie. If the Packers draft two WR, or sign another FA WR, he'll be in a dogfight to make the 53. I think the Packers would've gotten more upside out of Elijah Moore or DJ Chark for an investment that isn't much higher. That leads to the conclusion that Hardman is as much about getting Nixon and Reed off returns as anything else.

Filled by a rookie? Like Amari Rodgers? Whom the Packers spent a 3rd round pick and $ 1.5 M only to discover that he was not a NFL KR or a PR or just a R.
My main point is that the Packers know exactly what they are getting with Hardman. And possibly at a minimal cost. With a rookie there are no such certainties. Especially in their first year.

As far as I know Chark is unsigned. No ST snaps since 2019. He has never returned a punt, just kickoffs. 31 receiving yards in 7 games. 115 offensive snaps.
Ditto for Moore. Unsigned, but he had 538 receiving yards. Weird advanced stats. His best season his QBs had a 77.7 passer rating when targeted. 43 in 2024. It was NYJ and CLE. No STs to speak of (1 KR, 2 punt returns in 4 seasons), but may have done it in college.

"CB1 is not doing kick returns,” Nixon announced to reporters in January. “That's just what it is."
Nixson is a good tackler and for that reason was great at being the # 3 slot part time CB. He didn't do bad outside last year, but being the #1 by default leaves this team in a worrisome position. Still, he's expected to get the most snaps of the CBs now and shouldn't be returning kicks except maybe the planned touchbacks/fair catches.

CB1 is Nixon...for now. It may be Hobbs becomes the alpha at CB...but Nixon in the last two years has sharpened his DB skills. I have a feeling Valentine and a Rookie are going to lay claim to CB1 too.
Nixon's 4 years with the Raiders and first season with the Packers were focused on STs. And he was a top contributor as a ST Ace. Then he showed he belonged on defense as a slot defender in 2023. So much so the Packers paid him handsomely in '24 to play DB full time.
He's still only 27 with upside. I like it that Nixon views his role as CB1, sans Alexander. I view him as CB1 even with Alexander wearing Green and Gold. Because the Packers are sans Alexander in over half the contests as it is.
The world is run by those who show up...Nixon shows up and seems dedicated to improving his CB skills. I like his grit.

Every time I went to TC, the hungriest player on the field was Nixon. And it was never even CLOSE!!
When I heard #8 was on the team, first I noticed he benched over 500# in College (or was it HS?) never lost it and only added to it. Then I learned he and #25 had played together, and wondered if they shared the same fire / intensity, and if that could infect the whole locker room. (And maybe even the coaches?) Then I watched his first interview as a Packer, and I was HOOKED.
"Grit," yes! True Grit will hopefully become a mainstay of this entire team.

I see Hardman making the team and the game day roster as a PR/KR. Gute and MLF do not want Nixon and Reed returning kicks and punts due to their play on offense and defense. I do not like Nixon returning kicks because he takes too many chances thinking he will break the big one. All he is doing is not getting the ball to the 30 and taking a chance on a fumble.
As a WR Hardman does bring speed that the defense will have to account for. We could see more open up for our other receivers due to Hardman possibly getting behind the CB so the Safety will have to cover him.

It's always possible this guy becomes the next Rasul Douglas or DeVondre Campbell and has a career year for the Packers, but I certainly wouldn't count on it. He will be in a fight with Melton, Heath and any late round WRs the Packers draft just to make the roster.

Two articles on Hardman here at CHTV? We're really putting out the welcome mat for this guy. It's hard to get excited about this signing but I like having a designated return man. He didn't catch many balls in KC last year but it's an added bonus if he can also contribute to our passing attack.

They must think there's nothing else to write about, but there is. In the past two days, Brian Gutekunst has attended Pro Days at Oregon and Alabama. Top 30 interviews have also begun. The Packers started with Shemar Stewart, though he will probably be gone by the time they pick. The draft is what's happening.

I liked Mecole Hardman and Deebo Samuel from that 2019 draft class probably better than many of the other WR options for the Packers. Reason being was they both played with an electric quality, and both were considered super tough, which I felt our WR room needed badly at the time.
6 years later, I noticed Hardman suffered a couple injuries, but, he's still quite good when called upon. Did have some drop issues at KC. Devante had some with GB too. He's also bringing return abilities which are far and away better than Nixon's. Mecole Hardman doesn't look like he's lost anything from his game, and has made some rather large impacts on KC's successes while there.
I guess the two most important things from bringing Hardman to GB for me are the - veteran leadership - to help show our younger players in that WR room how it's done, and he's still a chain mover out of the slot or split wide. Plus, with 3 rings, the guy knows a thing or two about FINISHING THE JOB.
Cost effective in a big way. Low risk signing who could pay big dividends for this team. If Mecole Hardman has a career resurgence playing for the Packers, lookout.
LaFleur has to be loving his well documented Jet concept experience too. Big plus.

I think it's much more likely they're bringing him in for his return ability. Melton has been more productive than Hardman over last two years and that's not saying much.

Good point on the return duties. I totally get where you're coming from with this, LL. LambeauPlain argued he's a JAG in another thread. Those numbers are what they are.
I'm just thinking about what he was prior to his drafting by KC entering that 2019 draft, and his early career there. His first 4 seasons with KC, prior to his injury ending his season in Week 8 of 2022 were high level.
QB Ratings when thrown to:
2019: 146.6
2020: 116.3
2021: 99.1
2022: 139.0
He helped win 3 SB rings. Save for his 2nd season (not unlike Reed) his Drop% was impressive AF:
2019: 2.4
2020: 12.9
2021: 2.4
2022: 2.9
After 2022, he was never used the same way again. What changed? KC lost Eric Bienemy as their OC, and they gave that position to Matt Nagy. Yeah, THAT Matt Nagy, who went onto a special kind of greatness as the Bears HC (if you're a Packer fan) just a year later.
In Davante Adams' 13 year career, he had a Catch% in the 70s only twice. Mecole Hardman has had two seasons in the 70s, and last season, 85.7%, in his 6 year career.
Worth considering.
IMO, there's a really good chance this works and Hardman turns it all back around in a good way in GB this season. So low risk. Nothing to lose. Everything to gain.

Big Sic-E!!!! I'm good bro!
Always a treat to pop back in to see whassup with my Packer brothers & sisters. How are you man? I've been swamped busy with work, but, researching the stuff that could make our team better is in my DNA. I do check in when I can, and hold this CHTV site as the #1 for Packer fans worldwide. The personnel side of Bucks, Brewers & Packers has simply been my escape since I was a kid in the 60s-70s, and that never went away.
Probably have researched this draft more than any other in the last decade. It's that important. The Packers need BIG personnel changes, and I firmly believe this could not be a better draft for GB, with talents abounding well into Day 3 and beyond where they have position needs.
I seriously LOVE what Gutekunst - did so far - in FA, and if both the TALENT adds and the COACHING changes mesh in 2025, this could be one hella special season for the Green Bay Packers. There is that much talent for Gutekunst to take straight up, without a single trade. My guess is we are going to be a much better team this year.
Researched available FAs where we need help, and I feel Gutekunst added accordingly. There weren't a ton of over-the-top players where we needed them that commanded the big purse. Gutekunst saved a TON of cap cash for future maneuverings, and this was the perfect year to do so. Thought all along FA was short on sand in the pants for the Packers, and hitting OG, CB and WR in the manner the Packers did was spot on.
Has anyone checked the freaking boatload of signings Gutekunst has made since January or so at our positions of need with futures contracts? Ho-Ly SHIZZ. There are LEGIT players added where we needed improvements:
S Omar Brown
WR Tulu Griffin
CB Kamal Hadden
CB Kaleb Hayes
OG Marquis Hayes
OC Trey Hill
LT/OG Donovan Jennings
TE Johnny Lumpkin
ED Jeremiah Martin
DT Nesta Jade Silvera
All of them worthy of looking up... trust me on that. WOW. Gutekunst's top quality is his relentless pursuit of players to improve his roster, IMO
There were two badass WRs in that 2019 draft that I wanted Gutekunst to take, with realistic shots at being in position to, and one of them was Mecole Hardman. He hasn't lost a thing, and I firmly believe his signing with the Packers will pay IMMENSE benefits, this season, and quite possibly for a couple more.
Rock ON, SicSemperTyrannis!

I saw another Packer site who thought Hardman might replace Reed in the slot; and move Reed to a wide out. Maybe that is what Gute and MLF have in mind.
With all due respect what is not to like about Hardman? He is fast, good after the catch and has reliable hands. Need I remind fans that the 2024 Packers tied for the most dropped passes in the league! I love the signing. This draft we will have the luxury of drafting the best player available. Who we draft will depend entirely on how the draft falls to us. One thing is fairly certain. We will have the opportunity to get a really great player at 23. As always, time will tell.

I find myself asking the question: who are the Packers' 5 best skill players on offense? Jacobs and Kraft need to be on the field a lot. After that, Reed has been one of their better playmakers, Doubs is Love's security blanket, and Wicks can get open--he just needs to catch the ball (I'm not holding my breath). So who's next? Musgrave...if you want to run 12 packages. He could be a big slot, too. 11 personnel gets you into the WR room, rotationally, and whomever those next couple guys on the bench are. I just think Hardman will need injuries in the WR room to make a significant impact.
Leatherhead
March 21, 2025 at 01:00 pm
He's probably our #4 WR right now, behind Reed-Wicks-Doubs.
You're right about Kraft and Jacobs (and I'll include his backup, Wilson). Jacobs and Wilson had 450 touches last year for over 2200 yards. That's 450 touches out of 1027 plays (including 170 incomplete passes). Our RB is about half the offense. Jacobs and Wilson scored 21 TDs.
Kraft had one of the better seasons in Packers history for a TE, with 713 yards and 7 TDs.
Reed had a "down" season where he only gained 1020 yards with 7 TDs. Wicks and Doubs combined had 965 yards and 9 TDs in almost twice as many combined touches.
Those are our Triplets: Jacobs/Wilson, Kraft, Reed. They do most of the ball moving and most of the points scoring. We could surely use another weapon on the field.

Hardman will be the #5 WR behind Doubs, Reed, Wicks, Rookie...and if it comes down to pure WR contributions if KR is won by another player (like Rookie), Heath will keep him off the 53 and bump him to #6.

What it means to me is he is just a camp body at worst and at best he will compete for a 5th or 6th spot at WR for a final roster spot. What I am curious about is, if we ended up stashing him on the PS, would he get poached and would we care if he did?

It is possible that Hardman doesn't make the Team - but is more probable that he does - because:
First - Hardman is a risk management signing. Utilizing Hardman as a PR & KR - will lessen the exposure for potential injuries to both Reed and Nixon. So also a bit of quality assurance from Gutekunst.
Secondly - Hardman should improve the PR position - with a 2024 average of 10.2 per return v. 7.9 for Jayden Reed. In addition - he is a solid KR at 26.4 yds. per return. (Nixon's avg. was 29.3).
Thirdly - His offensive utility as a Receiver - especially for screens and jet motion plays. Also he can play both slot and boundary. If boundary - at the very least as a sacrificial X.
Fourthly - If his salary is similar to what he got paid last year in KC - 1 yr. @ 1.1M - he represents a relatively low investment - high yield signing for the Packers.
It is noteworthy that Hardman's low productivity last year was mainly due to Xavier Worthy bumping him - after being drafted in the 2nd round. (Although I'm now wondering if KC is regretting drafting Worthy after he was just arrested for domestic assault).
All things considered - I give it a better than 80% chance that Hardman will break camp with the team. Afterwards - being a useful contributor - in multiple ways - during the regular season. So while he may never be a "main meal" - his value may be more as a collation of snacks.

The DA dropped the charges against Worthy almost immediately. He caught his fiancee heating and tried to kick her out and she wouldn't leave. He did the smart thing and contacted his lawyer who did the smart thing and told him to record their conversations.
It's a shame that the charges are page 1 and the retractions are page 12 but that's America.

-Did Gipson or Cobb beat him out for reps? (Neither of those 2 were impressive?-lol)

Has still been a contributor, and made some very nice plays. This is the definition of "a flyer," low risk with huge upside potential. I know many fans wanted to see a huge DK Metcalf signing, but with so many key players coming off their rookie contracts in the next two years I just don't see how anything like that makes sense.

Honestly, this made the idea of taking a swing at MVS more palatable. at least he can block on the perimeter. Hardman is a redundancy and likely will be cut. The draft is the only chance left to help the wr room.

He was a legit punt returner last season: 20 returns for an average of 10.1 yards, which is better than average. But if the Packers draft a player who can return punts, Hardman will have to compete for the job. The Hardman signing does suggest that they may be done putting Jayden Reed out there to field punts.
