Why Packers Will Beat Texans and Why They Might Not

Why the Packers might win tonight, as well as some key things to watch in the preseason opener.

The Green Bay Packers will finally kick off the 2019 season tonight at Lambeau Field. Well, the preseason at least.

After Green Bay has been practicing with the Houston Texans, something that is new for the Packers, the two teams will meet tonight in the preseason at Lambeau Field.

Obviously, this will provide some exciting opportunities for fans, not only to see Aaron Rodgers, but the new offense and new head coach Matt LaFleur.

It came out today that Rodgers and LaFleur see the joint practices differently. Rodgers hates them (big shock) and LaFleur loves them.

That's not the first difference that has come up between coach and quarterback. There has also been a lot of talk about audibles so the chemistry between the two will be interesting.

Obviously, this isn't a normal game, so this won't be quite like the weekly version of why Green Bay will win and why it might not, but it will be close. Here is why Green Bay will win tonight, plus what to watch:

Why Packers will win / what to watch

Much of the attention tonight will be on the defensive side of the ball as new additions Preston Smith, Zadarius Smith, Adrian Amos, Rashan Gary and Darnell Savage make their debuts.

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine should have all the tools needed to build a playoff-caliber defense and it will be fun to watch the unit together in live action.

Gary has been impressive so far in training camp and I think everyone wants to see the Michigan product rushing the passer off the edge. The secondary will be another group closely watched.

The defense should have more speed and a lot more size. With new additions, plus Dean Lowry just getting a deal, expect the Packers to fly around. And facing a team that has DeAndre Hopkins and Deshaun Watson should be a good test.

Offensively, the Packers are debuting their new system. Who knows what LaFleur will reveal but I expect the Packers to be aggressive, let Rodgers throw down field and try really hard to muster up some explosive plays.

I know this is just a preseason game, but this staff wants to establish momentum and belief in this system. And since there is less time to learn, I think this will be treated more game-like than the Packers did under Mike McCarthy.

Due to that fact, as well as the heated battles at backup quarterback and receiver, I see Green Bay winning this game. The Packers are going to gives lots of reps to their young quarterbacks and their depth at wide receiver should help score points.

Plus, preseason or not, Green Bay always plays better at Lambeau.

Why Green Bay might lose

LaFleur could take a different tactic with Rodgers and sit him after just one series. Depending on how that goes, it is very plausible. Davante Adams and Jimmy Graham likely won't stay in long either or Aaron Jones or David Bakhtiari.

The elite left tackle should sit because the Packers need to figure out who his backup will be. Billy Turner, a free-agent who has started at guard and tackle, could do it in a pinch along with Lane Taylor but it remains to be seen who is the swing tackle.

However, the new coach is mixing things up so maybe he forces guys to play longer. It would be nice to see the offense go more than just one series. The defense will have a lot of moving parts and you can expect lots of mixing between the No.1's and No.2's.

If I am being honest, I love preseason games because you can watch without really having to worry about the score. Certainly, it's better if the Packers win on the scoreboard, but it's really all about player evaluation.

In that regard, the position battles at wide receiver and in the secondary are fascinating. I want to see how Josh Jones fits into the mix along with Savage and Amos. Early on, watch Jaire Alexander and the other young corners take on Hopkins. That will be a great test on limiting big plays.

This Houston offense is explosive and physical. It will be a test for the Packers defensively and the Texans pass rush should also provide a big challenge for the offensive line, which needs to protect better in 2019.

It's hard to know what is considered a success in the preseason, but outside of a win, I'd say getting a positive showing from Rodgers is the No. 1 priority. That, along with some explosive plays by young receivers and a solid effort defensively would be a good night.

Either way, football is finally here tonight. Go Pack Go.

Preseason or not, it feels good to say the packers are playing today!

My hope is the Gary hype train takes it up another notch tonight.

My hope is simple...

1) The Packers ST units go the entire without a penalty, keep the Texans from reaching the 25 on returns, reach the 30 or 35 on their own returns, and JK Scott in LIMITED action averages 4.98 hang-time and 57 yard punts.

2) Rodgers plays at least one series and the Packers are able to mix it up both running and passing the ball. The offense moves the ball down to the Red-Zone and Rodgers tosses a TD to someone other than Adams all the while NEVER going off-script...Just running the offense as it's called by MLF which gives Bayless and Marble-Mouth nothing to talk about for an entire week!

3) The starting defense plays 2 series against Watson and Hopkins with both ending in 3 and outs and sacks on 3rd down...Hell maybe one on 1st down too.

4) The Packers are able to evaluate the slew of young talent on this roster and NO ONE gets hurt!

Well Rodgers won’t be playing. I shared that wish.

This outcome of the game means nothing. It’s a chance to see how units operate together and then to allow individual players to shine (or otherwise).

Want to see our back up O linemen show they can play together. One on one performance is a good indication of potential, but they have to be able to play with others before I will take them seriously.

Beyond that, want to see non starters impose themselves in all phases. Make a push, confirm camp flashes or show that the camp means nothing when the game starts and demand more snaps. This year there are a ton of players to whom that applies in every facet of O, D and ST.

O and D will be vanilla. This really is a forum for showing that a player can beat his man without the benefit of scheme and get into the right positions to do so.

My fear is that what we've seen the last couple years, namely that the backup OL gets handled by the opposition, will prevent the team from taking much away from the performances of backup QBs and the WRs who are fighting for jobs that the QBs are throwing to.

That is my fear. The number two o line has thus far been a sieve in practices and worse against the Texans in joint practices. Just seem to play like individuals not as a unit. Hard to judge QBs, catchers or running backs if that occurs. Moreover, risk of injury is going to be heightened unless that is a whole lot better.

Much if not most of the game will be played by our backups. I have no faith in our backups at QB, RB and O-line. So while the defense will do ok the offense will not. But it’s preseason so I don’t mind if we lose. I expect the defense to look strong but the backups at offense and poor special teams will lose the game. Still, I wish the team well and hope for no injuries to key players.

We'll see. I like Alex Light, Jenkins, and Madison. They could have a good game, and give Kizer enough time to throw interceptions all by himself

Kev, I laughed at the Kizer interception take. I also see Kizer taking off on a few runs when he gets flustered. I see Light, Jenkins and Madison as ascending players. But not yet NFL ready. The backups at RB are worse than our fullback at the position. It’s going to be interesting.

I agree, it’s not that they are without talent, the one-on-ones flash that. The problem is (at least without Light) they have looked terrible as a unit. That will come, but to your point:

Can’t judge QB decision making or accuracy ability when being attacked from all angles.

Can’t judge a QB’s pocket presence in the pocket if there isn’t one or he has good reason to doubt that there will be.

Determining ability to go through progressions is prevented if QB is immediately pressured or scrambling to stay upright rather than play design.

If your QB is suffering from above, ball wont get out, negative plays will abound and receivers won’t have time to demonstrate route running or separation and will tend to be targeted only if quick read or dump off options.

Running backs will be either met in the backfield or have the line collapsed in. Even if not, will there be any lanes opened by the O line. Edge routes, something meant to be a priority are very difficult if early penetration.

Obviously these are worst case scenarios. The one positive would be that we will get to see RB/FB/TEs in run and pass protection probably.

The sad fact though is that from all that I have seen, there is a real possibility that the above will happen. Skill players will take the blame in part and we will come out with no fair objective information on QBs, receivers or RBs due to the line’s failings. Moreover there will then be mass soul searching on the impotence of the offense, QBs, RBs, etc.

I hope I am wrong but I believe that it is a real possibility if the ones don’t stay in (or play). The other O lines have been that bad. Perhaps a game environment will make them step up, otherwise I just hope it doesn’t lead to a string of injuries.

Well said, coldworld; if all the key starters are sitting, then the game really is about backups going against Texan backups. In other words what Jr Varsity players rise above other JV players, to be considered for the varsity team.

They should however put Bakh and Bul to protect Rodgers for 1 full passing series;
no run plays,
no punt
not play DAdams,
In that way, Texan defense plays the pass (simulating come from behind scenario), to fully test the mid tier WRs. Can they beat their man, and prove who is WR 2, 3 and 4. Let that begin to indicate who gets the reps with the #1s in the next week of camp.

Then, pull Rodgers, insert Kizer and do same; telegraph a series of all run plays, so Texans stack against the run, and see man on man, who goes to the varsity, and who stays on JV.

Pro football is all about deception. I would like to have other teams view our overblown controversy on play calling and audibles as something real. Rodgers and Lafleur are grown men and very mature, things will work out.
Look at New England you never know if they are going to, run or pass 50 time a game. They use everything possible to out coach or out play an opponent for the win. They have mastered the art of deception. Their use social media, manipulation of the press, and exploitation of all mismatches to affect the outcome of games.
I view the perception of their relationship between the QB and Coach to be a very valuable tool that needs to be exploited to the fullest. Keep other teams guessing while we keep stacking up the wins. The preseason is a perfect time to start, the media always wants a story, well give them one, use that tool that helps keep the opponents off balance and guessing. Especially our neighbors to the South da Bears. Wouldn’t that be a great start to the season.

I share yours and dobbers view on the O-Line...Most certainly don't want to see them IF Rodgers is one field...Just Bakh, Taylor or Jenkins, Lindsey or Jenkins, Turner, and Bulaga.

Vanilla or not I'd still like to see Rodgers and he rest of the 1st teamers perform no matter how long they play.

That seams pretty unlikely.

I want to see Kizer play. And if he sucks I want to see the Packers immediately pull the trigger getting a passable backup on the roster.

lol Jeremy, why would you or anyone at this point actually WANT to see Kizer play? You say "and if he sucks". Again lol. He sucks Jeremy, he sucks. He's an interception throwing machine. That's what he does. That's all he does. He's the terminator of bad qb's. Then you make matters worse and say we need to pull the trigger on getting a passable backup. What? Hold your horses on that final thought and wait until you see Tim Boyle tonight. I think you'll be put at ease similar to how Aaron Rodgers finally put everyone at ease in 2007 against Dallas. Tim Boyle is the real deal. He's not a backup. He's a legit starting qb with no ability to start at the moment because Rodgers is ahead of him. We are in good shape at "backup" trust me.

"why would you or anyone at this point actually WANT to see Kizer play?"

Because MLF has had success with mediocre QBs in the past as has Kyle Shanahan who runs a similar scheme. So I'd like to see if Kizer can be useful or not given it's unlikely they can get another QB without trading away assets.

If you are looking for MLF to develop them, the first preseason game of his tenure is way too early to assess success or failure.

I think Rodgers and the ones should play. Until it’s in sync it’s not time to chill. If our back up line was adequate, that would be enough, but you can’t really judge behind the mess ours has been, whether it’s Kizer, Boyle, Wilkins or anyone unless you want to assess scrambling and broken play ability. Let’s hope today sees a more adequate performance from the back up lines so we can see what others can do too.

Is it Jeremy? Is it? If Gutey calls up a team, any team and says how much in dollars would you take for Kizer, I guarantee you every single GM would tell Gutey you would have to pay me to take him. That is what's referred to as "less than zero". He's worthless jeremy. I know you don't want to hear it but it's true. He has zero value unless you are a GM looking to tank his team to get the no. 1 pick to draft a star qb than Kizer has value as your starter. It did work in Cleveland and it can work again. I would prefer it not to be in Green Bay sorry.

Ok, how can I explain this better. Let's say Kizer is one of those big ass tv's from the 1980's and you want to get rid of it. You put an ad for 50.00 in the paper or on Craigslist and nobody bites. You then put it in the free section. Again, nobody bites. So in the end you end up taking Kizer to the recycling center where they charge you 80.00 to dump him off. That is Kizer. You are out 80.00 which is -80.00 or "less than zero". Now do you understand Coldworld?

Exactly and ditto. The game itself is meaningless other than it gives the coaching staff film on guys against actual NFL talent from another team. Looking good in college, or in practice, is not the same as looking good against real NFL players in game conditions.

Remember when we lost Jordy in the preseason? That affected our offense for the entire year.

I would hope we're about at the end of the Kizer experiment. I don't think he'll be cut after the game, but if Boyle does anything then he should move up to #2.

The special teams situation has a solution, and I've articulated it here many times. De-emphasize special teams. Kick less, punt less, return less and take the game out of the hands of a bunch of rookies and UDFAs and put it in the hands of your best players. I don't think that'll happen, I think we'll continue to have problems on special teams. JMO.

This is what I am hoping and praying for Old School. I am one of the few, very few people here that see greatness in Tim Boyle. I honestly see him as the next great qb to take over for Rodgers so for me Boyle has to produce and will produce tonight. This is his shot and he knows it. The great ones always find a way to rise to the top so I expect Boyle to make his move tonight and pass Kizer forever. My only advice to him would be do not pass to J'Mon Moore this preseason like he did last year.

Boyle is about to turn 25 and Rodgers, barring injury, is playing another 5 years. So if he's the next great GB quarterback, he'll have to do it in his 30s.

I think if neither is impressive this preseason, then a high pick on QB becomes realistic in the next few years.

Given that Rodgers has either been out by injury, or hampered by injury, since he was about 30 years old, I'd say it's unlikely he'll be our starter for 5 years.

Name one elite QB who has had more injuries than Rodgers over the last half dozen years. Not Brady, nor Brees, nor Ryan, nor anybody else.

We are about to find out if it really was the coaching or the player that was Kizer's problem. Many have said that he was thrown to the wolves too early in Cleveland, and others have said that MM didn't adjust what he was doing to give Kizer/Hundley a better chance to be successful. In essence, they're saying his problem was that is isn't ARod. If the OL can protect him enough, we'll see if he can function in an offense that provides him a little more structure.

I agree with you (mostly) on STs and 4th down plays. It's only a matter of time before teams move in this direction on their own, which will make it easier for the league to do away with KOs.

Alll the angst about special teams inspired me to do some research.

Using footballoutsiders.com, I determined that there are some teams that are consistently good over the last four years. Rams, Baltimore, Chiefs, New England.

But there doesn't appear to be much correlation between special teams prowess and making the playoffs. Last year, the Jets were the best in the NFL on special teams. The Giants and Jacksonville were in the top 4. Cincinnati and Washington were in the top 8. None of them made the playoffs. Chargers, Seahawks, Cowboys were all in the bottom third and they all made the playoffs.

The biggest negatives (injury aside) from the joint practices were their returns.

Unless we find a kicker who can kick it out of the end zone every time, even in December with the snow falling and the wind against him, you can’t eradicate return coverage even if one never does anything other than fair catch or leave to bounce into the end zone.

Finally all the camp talk ends. We now can compare and see the choices. We can see whether or not, the packers changes will be effective. Corrections that hopefully won't require any more Time. If they play Smart. We won't see stupid penalties. That would be Ugly. The solution is working together. Whats coming should be players that make a difference.

It sounds like the Texans were much more physical and beat up the Packers a bit. Who knows, but I will be looking for effort and physicality along the LOS. I want to see a little nasty.

Missing Linsley didn’t help at all. Madison looked a lot worse than Patrick at Center, but Patrick can’t get to the next level (though he sure can maul).

Madison’s shotgun snaps have required QBs to have great verticals. That also doesn’t help. At the moment, neither Jenkins nor Madison have shown that they are capable of replacing Linsley without a major drop off. I would not be surprised if Patrick starts, but that will not help the running game even if it might help keep the QB upright.

The Texans have a pretty good front 7. How much their starters will play I don’t know, but that was one major factor in the offense struggling in joint practices.

My guess is that they are trying to get them trained at a new position (Madison) and one not played really in college (Jenkins). That’s probably part of the roster depth calculations. So far so rough, but the line hasn’t been good with them both at guard and Patrick or McCray at Center either. Both look promising in one-on-ones though.

I also would rather they had got them used to playing at their position of comfort first. Perhaps we would have a better line tonight then. Then again, I am not a coach and the longer term is more important I guess.

I don't expect the Packers offense to do anything fancy. LaFleur already voted the Texans ties to the Bears.

I am interested in how LaFleur uses the challenge flag and how the refs officiate PI.

On ST's, I am interested to see the directional pointing the team has been working on with Scott. I also want to see how Ficken reacts to kicking against pressure, although I think Crosby already won the job.

On Offense, I want to see how Moore does. He could very well get cut off he doesn't show up.

On Defense, I want to see utter dominance by Team 2. With guys like Gary going up against backups, their backup QB should have no time to throw. Ty Summers made a lot of plays when I was at camp. He is being slept on. He just has a nose for the ball. I want to see if that carries over. P. Smith has struggled in coverage. Can he show any coverage ability? I really want to see if Oren Burks progress, especially in coverage, will carry into the game. He has looked good.

Edit: Since people are so interested in the backup QB spot, I'll explain what I saw at camp. Kizer has shown absolutely no progress. Boyle so it a little but still makes mistakes. He still has that rocket arm as well. Manny has quite a good arm but he cocks and loads. He stares down WR's but is accurate.

" I also want to see how Ficken reacts to kicking against pressure, although I think Crosby already won the job."

Don't count those chickens, yet. Admittedly, Crosby has had few reps so far, but they're in a dead heat, percentage-wise, against the rush. There's almost $3.5M to save against the cap if Crosby gets cut, and his deal expires after 2019, anyway, with it being questionable that the Packers would want to give his weakening KO leg another deal. If Ficken outkicks him by any meaningful margin, I wouldn't be surprised to see Crosby cut loose.

If the offense struggles in PS games, though, it might be tough to get either enough opportunities in game situations to draw any meaningful conclusions. Still, the last time Crosby was iffy, they brought in Georgio Tavecchio to challenge him in camp and it straightened him out. Hopefully, if the Packers retain Crosby, Ficken will have challenged him enough to get him back on track.

Well, Crosby has a long history to rely on. Ficken has hit some long FG's which helps him, but for someone to unseat a veteran like Crosby, that have to have an outstanding preseason. Ficken just hasn't been close to good enough IMO. I think we'd be far better off keeping Crosby and then eventually drafting his replacement. There's no reason Crosby can't be extended, too. He is only 34 years-old, so he could have a long career ahead of him yet. Adam Vinitieri still kicks at 46 years-old.

Crosby has been a better than average kicker for the Packers. Vinitieri he is not. People decline at different rates and ages, and start from differing positions. Crosby has never had elite leg strength, for example.

As with all vets these conversations often start with the assumption of static capabilities. Crosby may be the same as last year. If so, he will have no trouble beating out Ficken. If he can’t, Ficken is either better, or more likely, Crosby has declined. If so, relying on history is a false indicator.

Let them fight it out. If Ficken doesn’t beat Crosby, you will get your wish. If he does, we need to face it that we need to look elsewhere, whether to Ficken or another.

I agree: while kickers can have very long careers, the leg doesn't last forever. We've already seen his leg strength declining on his KOs--especially as the weather gets colder. Supposedly, Scott can handle kickoffs if needed, but if there's little or no plan to keep Crosby beyond the end of his contract in 2019, the ability to carry his $3.5M in cap savings might be very tempting assuming the FG/PAT competition is close or working against him.

Scott tried a kick off in a game last year and kicked it in to touch for a penalty. He has the leg, but needs to practice if that is a serious option.

This is the totally wrong way to think about the Kicking position IMO. Kickers do not get a big enough data set in the preseason to rely solely on that. That's why teams almost always stick with the veteran kicker unless the gap is large. Crosby has also had quite good leg strength, and many would call it elite, it just depends on how big the "elite" category is to you. We don't want to Gould ourselves.

Nobody wants to Gould themselves. Nobody wants to be left with a struggling kicker whether they be a vet or a rookie. If Crosby still has it and Ficken doesn’t, the sample size over the next 4 games and practices is plenty big enough.

The reason teams tend to keep a vet kicker is not that, it’s because vet kickers have proven the mental aspect. Kicking us an extremely stressful role. We know Crosby can handle that. That’s why the odds are in his favor.

However, if Ficken does outplay him, Crosby May have reached a point where his abilities don’t compensate for his mental resilience. At that point one isn’t doing a Gould knee jerk, rather one is not letting history blind you to present reality.

Zero reason to end the competition, my money is on Crosby, but he should have to earn it.

Decision time on Fricken tonight. Known issues that he has had time to correct, to date in camp he has not. Yup, Ficken still in camp due to Crosby contract. If he goes wide right tonight, he's gone. Now the Packers may think about bringing in another kicker, but then they should cut both and let Crosby work a new deal with some other club (Hint:DA Bears) while they look at the scrap heap. Is Gute that dumb, no he is not. So Gute sucks it up and Crosby stays. (And don't think that the Bears won't overpaid Crosby. BONK. BONK. BONK. BONK!!! away from the Superbowl......)

If Ficken isn't the guy, cutting both isn't the answer until you have a guy you like, IMO. Cut the guy you don't like, keep the one you like better, bring in a new guy. Repeat until satisfied.

If there is a year to cut Crosby and go with a younger guy this year is the time to do it. I don't want to do it next year in year 3 for the defense and year 2 for the offense. If it's going to happen get it over with now.

I have to disagree with your take on the QBs. Canvassed a few people I know, just to make sure it’s not just my twisted take.

I agree Kizer has made some howlers. In between those he has also made some very difficult throws. None of us saw the latter from him last year. He has also been less inclined to start running. That growth is the definition of development as yet incomplete, but it is development.

What he needs to do now is eliminate the mental mistakes. He has the physical talent, can he overcome the mental lapses. Half of him is currently starter caliber, the other is a water carrier.

Boyle, whom we all liked a lot, has been something of a let down. Great arm but randomly skies passes and has not always been accurate. In essence, no discernible refinement in last year: promise but still looks like the rough around the edges guy from last year.

Wilkins, on a limited sample, reminds us a little bit of Flynn. Moxie, mobility and a decent arm (early Flynn) and the ability to salvage something from nothing. He might have decent backup potential in future.

None of these QBs would be my first choice we’re I building a roster, obviously. If the three, Kizer has the talent but needs to master the mental side of it (Rodgers had to too). Boyle could be a decent number 2 down the road but has not obviously taken a step yet: he is what he was last year, raw but intriguing. Wilkins is a work in progress.

If one had to be chosen today, contrary to the accepted Wisdom here, Kizer was our consensus. Sorry, won’t be popular, but that’s what we see. Again, we don’t know if he will overcome the mental lapses, but at this point he shows more than anyone else.

It would be great to have a better QB behind Rodgers, but I am not aware of one floating around who would be. Perhaps there will be a cut down option ( though they would take weeks to get up to speed probably), but given the needs of some teams, I’m not convinced anyone shining in preseason yet available for trade or any roster cut will be better than we have, affordable or willing to sit behind Rodgers if cut.

Be careful what you wish for those who would eject a Kizer. There is a lot of BS bandwagon talk that suggests an easy route to QB reassurance. The good news is that next year is supposed to be a good QB draft. Until then, maybe one of Boyle or Kizer will click. Let’s hope so not hope one of them out of town in return for a wing and a prayer.

My Packers crystal ball for tonight says "expect many starters to get minimal to zero playing time. That 2nd and 3rd stringers will be mixed and matched with 1st stringers throughout the game making consistency and continuity near impossible to evaluate.

Furthermore, you will see some very positive individual plays both on defense, special teams, and offense. You will also see individuals on all three of those squads struggle and look bad from time to time. The Packers effectively will be able to evaluate their players. You will see the new head coach in a walking boot on sidelines. Also believe the boot will be grayish in color.

The offense will appear out of synch from time to time. Pundits will state Rodgers (if he plays....crystall ball opaque regarding this for some reason) audibles out of several called plays.

It is that exciting time of the year! Lots of competition with some promising players. Go Pack go!

PS: My boys Tonyan, and ESB both will have 2 plus receptions. My predictions not my crystal ball! :)

Cut Mercedes Lewis. Give him a chance to get on another team. The packers don't need 4 TEs. Lewis slows the playing time and development of of Robert and Jace. The game is speed. 7 Wrs works. Not 4 Tes.

Given the rise of Vitale, it is possible Lewis will be viewed as redundant as the Muscle Man can play the role of a blocking TE in addition to everything else he does.

But I expect Hackett will want to keep Lewis around for a few more weeks to evaluate his fit in the O given their long experience together in Jacksonville.

But I have not heard much about Lewis in camp to date as far as receptions. Perhaps he is quietly doing the job blocking in the run game and pass pro?

As mentioned on other threads here, Vitale is 5'11 and 225. To small for the online blocking needed in the new offensive system. Frankly, he's here because the Packers have only him and Williams to handle the backside on play action and 5-7 step drops. Williams is a good blocker, Vitale is not...yet. (The number of Wisconsin FB that could have been taken that fit this system...Well there are only a handful of Div. 1 problems that have run a FB/HB so it is what it is. (sigh)

You guys are over-thinking the value of Lewis. If we have to rely on his blocking we lost. Lewis and blocking TEs were MMs thinking. Your still not going to run a lot, with Rodgers at QB. With Rodgers; it's shoot fast and throw bullets. Lefleur was brought in because they thought MM was stale. Rodgers will beat any blitz.

The way I see this Offense working is that it hits a lot of checkdowns/timing routes as well as a bunch of runs. This allows the Packers to move the chains. Built into this type of Offense is that the Defense never knows if the TE's are run-blocking, pass-blocking, or going for a pass. That makes things very tough on the Defense, especially if you have a guy like Lewis that is big enough to block quite well and yet has good enough hands to be a threat receiving. And then after all this short stuff and moving the chains, the Packers can go deep with the Defense biting underneath. In Tennessee, LaFleur used 3 TE sets at times, and TE is already one of those positions where each different body type can be used differently, so having extra TE's is quite useful.

Vitale is quickly gaining cult/legend status similar to Kuhn. He's a lock for the team already and very well might make Mercedes Lewis expendable. Fans are loving this guy. His arms are huge. He can run, block and is great at catching the ball. He can do it all from everything I've see of him so far. Last week he caught a sideline pass and was athletic and tough enough to survive a vicious hit and still keep his feet in bounds and gain more yards up the field. I have to say, if it's Vitale going up agains Mack or Griffin I'll take Vitale over the aging Lewis. He's one tough cookie, a bull dog.

Actually I heard him speak on the local sports news. He said he used to play tight end so he is very good at catching the football and he is from everything I saw so far. Catches everything in sight. A very odd and unusual talent stack this Vitale has. He's a hybrid mix of fullback and a tight end is you ask me. Dare I say a Colt Lyerla type? He's a lock to make this team. I can't say the same for Marcedes Lewis. The locals in Green Bay are already going crazy over this guy's talents. I am telling you we found our next John Kuhn.

He was a pass catcher not a blocker or runner in college. A major offensive weapon not a short yardage dump off guy. Cleveland tried to make him a traditional fullback and, as he has said, it didn’t really suit him. He is not a Henderson or a Kuhn.

He is something of a FB/TE hybrid with big running back speed and agility and a smaller, more compact frame but his plus skill is catching. Call him what you will, if it works, great, but he needs to be able to block well, which he struggled to do in Cleveland.

Nobody is now doubting his passing impact compared to Lewis. The debate is about his blocking prowess. Perhaps he will have developed, but Vitale has never been a frequent or very impressive blocker. Lewis may not be much else, but he is all we obviously have who is a plus run and pass blocker among the TE/FB group.

I have mixed feelings about this. I am concerned that 4 TE ‘s may be too many, but feel McCarthy really should have used Lewis more last year. One of the best blocking TE ‘s out there. That’s important in MLF’s run game scheme. And Vitale’s a lock, so we have a fullback and at least 3 tight ends.

On the other hand, with that depth at tight end, it could give us the value we would need to trade for a capable backup QB IF none of our current crop step up and show something in these preseason games. And I think we have to have a capable backup!

The team already knows which 40 -45 players will be on the roster. Let the bottom third make a case for themselves. The game and the score are irrelevant.
Be smart, make it to Week One with a healthy roster.

I do not expect AJ to play and hope he does not given his tight hamstring that has kept him out of practice for a week.

And if Rodgers plays, I hope it is just a series or two to see how the starting unit is operating the new O.

But if he doesn't take a snap this game, I would understand.

Finally, it is humorous to see the media take Aaron's comments about not liking joint practices...and Matt's that he does...to build a "narrative" about another perceived "difference" between the two and more trouble in paradise.

It is shocking, shocking I tell you that the QB and head coach have opinions that are not exactly the same.

Too much credence is given to so called journalists when theirs is just another opinion. My take is that Rodgers has opinions and others have opinions too. But so what? Sadly there are some who will see Machiavellian intent, but I think he thought it got in the way of the ones rolling out the real offense and thus would rather not. That seems to have been his frustration. In retrospect it would have been better to give a full statement or nothing at all, but we are all human and things slip. Glad Rodgers isn't going to play. To me the one guy that has the most to gain in this game is the rocket man with the rocket arm. Of course I am talking about Tim Boyle. He really really impressed me last preseason and his stay in the pocket throwing style ala Lynn Dickey is perfect for this offense. If he can take his game to a new level, we can finally put an end to the disastrous trade deal with Cleveland last year. I will be rooting for Boyle to take that job from Kizer tonight and send him packing. Tonight is all about solidifying that backup qb spot in my book. Go Boyle!!

To give our offensive line time to develop, let's see our new coach work his creative magic with a dizzying array of short passes and an imaginative variety of runs.
Remember how well Rodgers did last year in the season opener against the Bears in the second half -- after he was immobilized by a leg injury?
Quick, quick, quick. Then an occasional play-action for a look downfield.
We can be somewhat vanilla and still mix things up.
Please, Aaron, throw to those quick openers; move the chains; stay healthy!

He'll be aided tonight by quick passing plays and a mixture of runs.

If we could somehow fuse Boyle and Kizer we might make a starter. Both have potential, both have yet to achieve it. The back up QB love is befuddling minds. Hopefully one will take a jump preseason. In the meantime hopefully a few more open minds and less partisan rose colored spectacles. Off to get my eyes checked because I read things my eyes did not see.

I don't see us winning with DeShone Kizer at the helm, who has looked like GARBAGE in training camp so far.

I hated trading away DeMarious Randall then and still hate it now. I get that Randall had some locker room issues, but my goodness, he was a FIRST ROUND pick and a starter, and we got a bad QB who will neveer amount to anything.

What bothers me even more is the fact that this team STILL does not have a legit back-up NFL QB. Kizer will be out of the league in 2020. Between Spriggs getting cut, Kevin "The Injury King" and Josh Jones, that is the reason why we've dug ourselves a hole and missed the playoffs the past two seasons.

For tonight, I expect hiccups and kinks to be worked out on the offensive side. I hope plays come in on time and LaFleur isn't burning timeouts the way MM used to. I expect the defense to get most of the headlines after the game.

More than anything though, let's just get in and get out healthy.

Rossonero....I have been sounding the alarm about the backup QB situation for two years but people insist we don't need one.

We could have taken Lamar Jackson. We could have had the guy who was generally regarded as the 2nd best QB in this draft, Haskins.

Rodgers has been bothered by more by injuries over the last six season than any other starting QB. Brady, Eli, Ryan, Wilson, Roethlisberger, Cousins, Brees. He's missed big chunks of the season twice, played through injuries that have hampered him twice, had concussions.

But we're rolling the dice on him staying healthy. I think it's stupid to bet a half-billion dollar business on one guy.

Lamar Jackson, Drew Lock and on & on... You may actually be right about the BU QB position, but pick a viable option, please.

Why the Packers might lose? Well - if they play Kizer a lot that would seem to pretty much guarantee it.

This team for the first time is a Gutekunst standard met team. I don’t think he is done tuning it. He has gotten bigger, faster and impact players that can effect the game. I think he seen the packers come up short in games because of key areas. He has spent money on players and has drafted field ready players.

HI Taryn, I am new here and just want to make sure. You are a woman correct? I am going by your picture you posted and I assume since it's a female you are as well. If not let me know. I really enjoy reading what you have to say and have much respect for your opinions here. Thanks

I am female. Thank you for the kind words.
If you cannot get the game, this link ...bilasport.net, which you need to type search since I cannot post a direct link here for some reason, will do the job. It works on my desktop and phone for several years now. I have offered many a way to watch games for those who cannot but....every year the same request and never a reply as to worked for them or even tried it.
GO PACK GO!

Ok great and thanks for getting back so quick. Now, I would like your take on the backup situation Kizer and Boyle. You see a future here for any of these two? I realize you were the only person here to hit on Fackrell other than TT so that in itself makes me want to hear your opinion on these backups.

I'd go with Boyle but they'll find a way to give Kizer the job...unless he really plays bad...how bad is anyone's guess as to getying him cut or traded.

Time to watch some football...as in both 4 o'clock games.

Look for a post by Taryn. He or she posted how to watch it for free. He or she posted earlier today. Hope you can watch it. It's going to be memorable and the Tim Boyle era will officially kick off.
