Why the Packers Should Stay Away from OBJ

Once again, the Green Bay Packers have a choice to make whether they want to pursue wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. The Cleveland Browns released Beckham last week and the receiver is now a free agent. According to published reports, the Packers are one of the teams Beckham is interested in joining and may even be his top choice.

Other reports indicate that the Packers have offered the former LSU star a contract for the veteran minimum and that because of cap restraints, they are unlikely to make an offer for significantly more than that. The ball is now more or less in Beckham’s court.

But is Beckham a good addition for the Packers right now? Here is why the Packers should stay away from OBJ.

The biggest issue concerns Beckham’s attitude. He is known to be a distraction off the field and in the locker room. While the former Giants and Browns star has never gotten into serious legal trouble, he has demonstrated poor judgement on several occasions during his NFL career.

Packers fans may be familiar with one of the more well-known incidents. It took place in January 2017 in the days leading up to the Packers playoff game with the New York Giants at Lambeau Field. Beckham and some teammates took a trip down to Miami and were photographed on a boat during a day off from practice.

Yes, it was a day off, but it certainly didn’t look like Beckham was concentrating on the game plan for the upcoming playoff game. Beckham didn’t play well in the game, catching only four passes on 11 targets for 28 yards. The Packers won the game 38-13 and the fallout from the Beckham photograph and trip was clearly a distraction for the Giants in the days leading up to the game.

After the game, Beckham punched a hole in the visitor’s locked room at Lambeau Field and the Giants agreed to pay for the damages.

There were other issues during his time with the Giants including a rendezvous with a French model that included photos that were alleged to include drug use (no charges were ever brought) and an interview Beckham gave to GQ magazine in July of 2019 that ruffled more than a few feathers in New York.

The Giants signed Beckham to a five-year contract worth $95 million but traded him to Cleveland one year later. Clearly, the distractions created by Beckham upset the Giants brass enough that they felt the need to get rid of him soon after signing him to a big deal and making him the face of the franchise.

Beckham also left Cleveland under less than ideal circumstances. He was a distraction to the Browns this season and did not have chemistry with his quarterback, Baker Mayfield. The problems between Mayfield and Beckham were not off the field problems, they were related to what was or was not happening on the football field.

According to an article on ESPN.com, an anonymous source in Cleveland described the situation this way: “This has zero to do with anything off the field, which is why it's all so perplexing. I don't know of one [incident] that's ever [come between] them off the field. ... this is all about the field.”

Much of it has to do with Beckham running the wrong routes and doing his own thing rather than following the playbook.

Shortly before the NFL trade deadline, Beckham’s father released a video on social media with footage of plays that Mayfield missed an open Beckham or didn’t even throw him the ball when he was open. Beckham’s father also made derogatory comments about Mayfield on his social media post.

The Browns released the following statement when they made the decision to cut the former star receiver. “After careful consideration, internal discussions and conversations with Odell and his representation, we've determined that it is in the best interest of all parties involved that Odell no longer play for the Cleveland Browns,” the statement read. “We appreciate all his efforts and contributions while in Cleveland, but we've just reached a point where it is best that we move forward as a team without Odell. We are finalizing the process of granting Odell his release and we wish him well as he continues his career.”

Essentially, the Browns didn’t view Beckham as a team player. It would be difficult to imagine Aaron Rodgers tolerating a receiver who always wants the ball but doesn’t run the proper routes and isn’t where Rodgers expects him to be.

Winning Rodgers’ trust has always been a big key to the success of any Packers receiver since the reigning league MVP took over as the starter in 2008. It should be noted that the receivers who have won Rodgers’ trust over the years have not been “diva” types. Davante Adams, Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Randall Cobb and Greg Jennings are all hard-working players who were wanted the ball but were reliable enough to gain Rodgers’ trust and put the team’s success ahead of their own individual statistics.

Beckham also has struggled with injuries which have limited his production in recent years. He hasn’t made a Pro Bowl since the 2016 season. He has only played 16 games in a season once since then and has only played 10 games or more twice in the last five seasons. A partial list of his injuries includes a sprained ankle, a broken ankle, a quad injury, a sports hernia and a torn ACL. Those fans who remember the acrobatic one-handed catch Beckham made in the end zone against the Cowboys must know that Beckham can no longer consistently play at the level because of his age (29) and lengthy injury history.

There is no doubt that Beckham is talented and that he and Davante Adams would give the Pack one of the most gifted starting duos at the position. But Beckham comes with many red flags and concerns both on and off the field and may be a problem in the locker room.

The Packers need to decide if bringing in OBJ is worth the risk. Based on his history, the answer is no.

On the affirmative side - Like AB (and a virtual Conga-line of diva WR's before them) he's just learnt that he's not inexpendable and the universe doesn't revolve around him........ The Packers (and likely all) current contract offers reflect this.

Also like AB, he's ripe to readjust, mature, and come in and help where he can (AB even re-signed this year after getting his SB ring last year).

For the contract offered, he's a low risk-high reward bet.

"The Packers (and likely all) current contract offers reflect this."

No it reflects his status as a vested veteran. The Browns have to pay his salary difference up to about 4.5 mil. So unless a team thinks he's worth more than 4.5 mil the vet minimum is irrelevant. OBJ is gonna get paid 4.5 million.

As a side note I turned off Scalzo and Brust yesterday because those morons didn't do their homework on this. It's not a big deal if a fan doesn't realize this but a prime time show on ESPN Wisconsin? LOL

I have to believe if he signed on to play for the Packers with DA, AJones, Aaron Rogers, etc, he'd know exactly what he's stepping in to. I don't think he'd bring any locker room/off field issues, as evidenced by his good behavior in the past 4 plus years.
The bigger question is whether he can get on board with the route tree, running it hard and accurately on every play, and acknowledge that he's just one of many worthy candidates for pass catching opportunities.
Another is run blocking, kick coverage, and other unromantic STeams duties. I've heard him mentioned as a kick/punt returner. I say no way unless he's only back there to cleanly field the punt with a fair catch every single time.
If he signs on for that and an opportunity for a deep playoff run, bring him in. GPG!

I don't know, it could be worth a shot if both parties can agree to something. It gives opposing defenses a lot more to worry about than Davante. If he's interested in coming here, he's probably interested in being on his best behavior and doing what's needed to help the team win--hopefully at least in the short-term.

Look at Antonio Brown, an even more problematic distraction player and how he has performed with the Bucs. He caught a couple of TDs in last year's playoffs, and has had a productive 2021 so far, including two games over 100 yards and a third at 93.

If you're "all in", the price is right, and it gives us an X factor on offense, then it should be strongly considered. Roll the dice and take a chance.

At vet minimum with Cleveland paying most of his salary there is zero, none, zilch reasons for not bringing him in to be wr 2. If it doesn’t work out you cut him. But obj isn’t stupid enough to get cut by the pack and what that would do to his contract demands during the off season. He’d be a good soldier and fill a wr2 role. Then maybe for a half year at least I could stop hearing about our wr Corp being the best blockers in the league and actually catch some footballs.

Certainly a strong argument why OBJ should not be signed. However I proffer, why he should be signed:

1. He hasn't played with a QB like Aaron Rodgers.
2. We're only asking good behavior from him for a few months. If Tampa can co-exist with the mildly psychotic Antonio Brown for 1+ years - GB could certainly endure OBJ for 3 months. However this may require A. Rodgers to billet OBJ for that time. After all, Brown did stay with Brady, so....
3. While OBJ may not be what he once was - he should still command more attention than MVS and Lazzard. Also OBJ is, perhaps surprisingly, a good and willing blocker.
4. He would be cheap at the veteran's minimum - so minimal salary cap impact.
5. If this indeed is the "all-in" year for the Packers - an OBJ signing would certainly affirm that.
6. If it works out - Gutekunst (and the fans) will win the trifecta of low-risk - high-reward signings this year of Campbell, Douglas and OBJ - which sometimes needs to happen for a championship run.

If he can’t or won’t learn the correct routes, that would seem to be likely to incite a major issue with Rodgers. Got to think there is more to this than him refusing to run the routes: some issue with the coaches perhaps?

Every target he would have received is one less play for Adam, Jones, Cobb, and the rest. We don’t need more weapons….we need better blocking. If we get that, our existing weaponry is more than adequate.

You know who should have made a run at him? Chicago.

I don’t understand this “take a chance…..roll the dice” stuff. I don’t think it’s desirable to take risks when you have the lead, and we are 7-2. It looks like we’ll win the division, guaranteeing a playoff win at home. Either the Rams or Cardinals will win that division and the other will be the #5 seed. Dallas will win their division, Tampa will win theirs.

So if we make no moves at all, we have a very good chance of being in the Championship game again. Why risk that?

Honestly, I remain bemused as to how he significantly helps given our system. Since I’ve not followed him in Cleveland, I could well be missing something obvious, but I’ve not seen any clear vision as to how he fits in. So I don’t have a strong opinion either way. I will let others tell me if I should give up my Super Bowl hopes now he’s with the Rams. I’d still like to find a move TE though.

That is true. Life of polarity. However, let's not make "distraction" a deal-breaker when all he has to do is win and all is forgotten.

I'm not new to this forum. I remember the endless hate Adams used to receive. Everyone hated his case of drops. Many said he would never be a true #1. Many said he couldn't make over the shoulder catches. Look at him now.

Winning erases a lot.

Yes, about winning. Winning is also about instant gratification - which our brain prioritizes. It's not that the early hate towards Adams has totally been forgotten - just that it will be later recalled. I've heard it said that we are now living in "The Age of Instant Gratification." Therefore, I believe that "winning" will trump most any "distraction."

Good article Gil. Odell isn't all that! He didn't work out in Cleveland where one of best friends, another WR, was also a starter. I know many say he's a great or even good receiver, but you have to show me in his stats and guess what.....the stats don't agree that he's anything more than a number 3 wideout with a crappy attitude. Let's see will Gutsey want to sign this guy? I hope not.

Memo to OBJ: (If thinking of joining the Green and Gold)

Looking for "the ride" for a possible ring?
1. Prove you're worthy and leave the drama behind.
2. Keep mouth closed and do what is asked of you and more. Have a textbook team player attitude.
3. Respect the team, fans and team mates.
4. Create locker room antics and you're OUT.
5. Understand you are not anywhere in any pecking order.
6. Be humble and play to win.
7. Understand Packer Fans love the stars that play for us, but spit on the team as some "stars" have done or tried to do and the fans will run you out of town on the first bus leaving, we don't stand for players that disrespect the team. You don't make the team, the Packers make you.
8. Can't/won't swallow all of the above? We wish you well wherever you land.

Agree? Then with our eyes wide open to these conditions we'll welcome you to Cheese Nation, The Green Bay Packers.

Now let's go get some rings.

I remember Packer fans saying “nah, no way” to Randy Moss, too. Moss went on to poison the NE locker room so much that NE only won 18 games the year he arrived. Just think what they could have done with a “high character “ WR!

Now OBJ is no Randy Moss, but nevertheless, Packer fans have a knee-jerk negative reaction to colorful & outspoken personalities. They’ll say “no!” even if a a personality comes with football talent that the team needs.

The question here is how much OBJ has left in the tank. He can’t be any worse than Amari Rodgers. Rodgers looks like his ceiling might be as sort of a poor man’s Ty Montgomery: bad returner, poor judgement, kinda slow but so far more durable than Montgomery.

Amari's going to be good. I hope he gets a jet sweep early against the Seahawks for confidence, and because he's likely to make good yardage. I'm not so sure about him returning punts in the near future -- although I'd give him a couple of more games.
I also liked Ty Montgomery as a player for the Packers. He did a lot of good things for us -- including being a team guy in switching positions -- before one poor decision in returning a kickoff against the Rams.

Also, I like the wide receivers we already have on the Packers, a lot.
I'm a big fan of Lazard and MVS, and hope they get more targets. I also like Taylor and Winfree, plus haven't given up on ESB. I've been impressed with Randall Cobb this season as a player, and he's also the kind of guy to have on the Packers as a person.

Going all in for a Super Bowl includes avoiding potential problems, and supporting the guys already on the team. Let's not risk upsetting the team chemistry of the Packers when we should be gelling for the stretch run. Even at a minimum salary, the potential overall cost is much too high.

First thought is the process was going to determine which OBJ we would get, or not.

Money + Large Market vs. Vet Min + Small Market

He made his choice. Tough to say which team really has the better chance, but I still like our chances. We have had good games, yet, some decisions, especially the piss poor job by LaFleur last week is concerning. Not running more v. KC is another glaring head scratcher.

I question the level of control LaFleur has in his own offense. It’s been 10 years of good-great regular season numbers, and playoff hero ball losses. 1 common denominator.

I agree with you about everything you said Mr Gold except maybe the bit about MLF and his control of the offense . He has been outstanding during his time with the Packers. I am getting tired of this idea of hero ball that has become so pervasive on this site. I mean we didn't lose to the 49ers over hero ball. Even the TB game came down to some poor defense more than anything. And while I agree in the beginning MLF should have run the ball more against the Chiefs and used a few more screens , swings , hitches and outlets to the TEs , it is noteworthy that we moved down the field at the end of the game with some long balls. We lost last week due to our poor ST play more than anything. A muffed punt that gave KC 3 points and two missed but makeable fgs led to our loss not hero ball!

Hey Reg, I understand what you're talking about, but I think last week was a bit of a revelation.

"Hero ball," can take a couple of different forms. We saw what the offensive "guru," Mike Sherman, did in his tenure with Favre. He didn't run nearly enough, with Ahman Green no less.

"Offensive Genius," is a term that is pervasive in the NFL. Sometimes HCs who were OCs buy into it full on. Tables turned in Green Bay, from some very, very dark places for decades, when one of those geniuses, Lindy Infante came to town just in time to coach the Majik Man. Wolf enters the picture, hires the TRUE genius in Mike Holmgren, who understood the importance of a balanced attack on par with Bill Belichick.

Sherman left Super Bowls on the table for his willingness to throw our chips in on the sexy passing game. McCarthy did the same with Rodgers, to a fault. Is LaFleur doing the same?

It's a valid point, when all he had to do was RUN TO GLORY. Instead, Aaron Jones had only 12 rushing attempts, at a 4.4 ypc clip. AJ Dillon only had 8 carries, at a 5.6 ypc clip. Those numbers should have been doubled & tripled, respectively. We would have easily won in KC, and we'd be 8-1. STs be damned...

All along, I've felt Rodgers was responsible for most of the checking out of running plays in order to throw more. I've got concerns now about LaFleur's intentions in this area.

We lost because we didn't run, using our advantage of Thunder & Lightning, to exploit KC's main weakness, their Run D. It was an inept display of game planning, play calling and game time adjustments to help his QB in his first NFL start.

From this perspective, where a solid run game PAIRED with a solid passing game, is a winning formula, one that has earned the Patriots and Bill Belichick 6 Lombardi Trophies since 2001. Imagine how many we would have had if Mike Holmgren hadn't left GB. That's the last time we saw BALANCE on Offense in Green Bay.

Not taking anything away from Matt LaFleur's achievements with regards to his record, but, it could be even better with a more balanced approach. What is his playoff record? That is where we see the numbers swing wildly out of balance. Just a thought.

I thought OBJ could help if we had problems opening up run lanes and could change up to passing game with more athletic WR option. However, we have Cobb and he has done a good job on moving the chains or 3rd down and seems to squirm loose at the right time. I really thought the rook WR Rodgers would be clicking along by now....but ML offense is a different animal and he sure seems to be thinking a lot and I fear worrying about making mistakes and not making a real positive impact. I would like our run game really tee off and play some smash mouth ball but we all know we have had very little game action with our Big center and a revolving door all over the OL. Really looking foreword to our center getting back with Bak at LT and Jenkins moving to his spot. IF we can get our OL healthy for good we should be able to run on most anyone. ML play calling has not been seamless but the OL has been leaky also at worst time. I still believe Dillon is underused, but I don't want him hurt either.

Well it is too bad we couldn't get OBJ for a vet minimum. If we had it would have been amazing . I said early on we wouldn't be able to afford him. And well it is true that L.A. has more appeal as a destination for many athletes over Green Bay. We will never win this battle. He probably would have helped the GB cause without a doubt. The Rams getting him only helps them in the short term towards playoff success as they now have one of the best receiving corps with a highly capable QB. LA will be a tough out wherever they play. I am not certain about their long term future but... this year watch out!
What amuses me and bothers me is the extent that the cheeseheads on this site still act like a pro sports team has to be some kind of miniature military corps to succeed. The Patriots who worked hard to get OBJ even when they weren't on his short list have never given a damn about this e.g. their past acquisition of Randy Moss ( a diva and locker room problem at the time much beyond OBJ) after which followed an 18 game win season. I mean if you summarized Nitschke's criteria and Gil Martins commentary you can come up with list of all the reasons the Packers have not gotten past the Championship bar in the postseason with all that petty team rah rah spirit stuff Rodgers has to be the most diva like problem in football for any team this year. Still he has helped us to a 7 and 2 season despite all the locker room and media distractions.
As an old teacher, you hand out A's for success and production not A's for ethical behavior and effort over ability and success. There have been plenty of diva types that have won Superbowls .
Let's hope Rodgers sans OBJ is one of them again despite the luxury of possibly having had an OBJ on the team . Well at least we can bank on Amari Rodgers great potential and being such a good guy .
