It was both and then some. Gordon pulled a hamstring at a promotional shoot, showed up to the team facility late, and the administrative people for the Browns could tell he was on drugs. That's why they got rid of him.

Tarynfor12 - have some compassion for another human being. I think a lot of credit should be given to Gordon for finding a way to get to this point. Substance abuse devastates lives all over the planet, rich, poor, gifted and average people alike. Yes he has been given access to treatment more than many but that does not preclude him from the struggles associated with his illness.

It's a shame as he's great to watch when he's healthy but perhaps the NFL and football world hasn't really helped his condition. Best of luck to him in his recovery from addiction.

So you think I should have an unending supply of tissues for those who go through rehab every other month.
I find it hard to have sympathy for anyone who constantly makes the bad choice over and over and who rely on the tears of sympathy to forgive and help them to do it again. Even more so for those who have the ability and chance to have great lives.
Lastly, drugs and alcohol abuse is not a disease, it is a self inflicted/ induced illness that could have been avoided by not denying what it has done to millions before you.But you wanted to be cool, fit in and convince yourself it was the only way to have a good time. Boo hoo...No tears here.
Let's not start with those who become addicted via medical necessity treatment but the huge epidemic is from simple a holes described and chose it again and again. The drug problem in this country continues because of unending chance givers as yourself. Good luck with a problem you feed by the constant supply of heartstrings to be yanked upon and I mean yanked.
Free needles for all says California and other States...free every thing... become a drugged up dimwit and blame those who earn for your plight.
Morons....I've been out of tissue for a really long time and don't expect to resupply anytime soon.

Hmmm... I made a lot BAD choices when I was young and certainly didn't get clean and sober the first time. Thank God I didn't listen or surround myself with people like yourself who are so willing to dismiss someone as a "Loser" or someone "Who will never change".

Yes you are correct he DID make his choice IF that is what is happening here. Your also correct that YOU don't have to care. But your WAY out of line for assuming he will never change. The program is FULL of success stories of people who got it the first time and people who got it the 23rd time. It takes what it it takes and hopefully Mr. Josh Gordon has eliminated anyone in his life with your type of thinking.

You’re right Nick. I’ve stumbled more than I can remember and there is always hope for all of us. The only difference is when I failed it didn’t cost anyone, but me money. He’s a high risk for any team despite his talent as a football player. Also he may be a great person. Just someone who has a lot of baggage. Teams don’t want to carry his baggage, where you and I have to carry our own.

I say yes. Same was said when we had the chance to sign Moss and The Beast. They're too much trouble. Stay away. Too expensive. They also happened to be really good. So is Gordon when he's got his shit together. I'd certainly take a chance. He's cheap. If it works out you've got a monster receiving corps. If it doesn't work out, you tried. There's no good citizenship award in football. Well, there are some good guy awards, but they have nothing to do with football. I say take a flyer. He's got a hamstring injury this time, he didn't overdose.

More "expert analysis" from Aaron Nagler. I'm honestly not sure why people still listen to this guy. Sure, it's easy to say "No." That just goes with the odds. You'll be right more than you are wrong and you can point to when you are right after predicting wrong if you just go with the odds. A real analyst can find the exception to the rule, though. Here's why Josh Gordon has a solid chance to end up with the Packers:

Yes, it's true that the Packers don't take too many risks on character flaws, but Gordon would cost well under $1M on the year, and we'd be protected if he got into more trouble because we could just cut him. The cost in terms of trade value is also likely relatively low because the Browns have already announced they will cut him Monday. How many other players can change a roster like this? Think about upgrading Geronimo Allison to Josh Gordon. And that can protect Rodgers by giving him another WR with separation so he doesn't have to hold the ball as long.

Gutekunst has clearly been willing to wheel and deal. If we want, we could have Josh Gordon this year and then potentially sign him to another deal and let Randall Cobb walk. That deal could be relatively cheap and could protect us or maybe just go year-by-year. Who knows, maybe going to a contender in a small city away from the media could help Gordon keep his head down and stay out of trouble a little bit more.

There's a lot of reasons Josh Gordon to the Green Bay Packers makes sense, and Aaron Nagler saying "No" doesn't move the needle in terms of analysis.

The expert analysis stops at he's had 4 substance abuse policy infractions, was basically suspended for 3 total seasons, and he just showed up to work high again. If the league would have got him with a test, he'd be banned from football forever instead of a budding free agent as of today.

If anyone signs this guy, they're one of three things:

1) Desperate
2) Idiotic
3) A Desperate Idiot

On a personal level, I feel for the man. Addiction if rough business and it's not as simple as making a decision to not use.

On a business level, this man is untouchable unless you are devoid of talent at WR or have roster spots and cap to spare. The Packers have 8 wide receivers in their stable, 6 on the active roster, one on PS, one on IR. I would bet that ALL of them produce more in the rest of the NFL careers than Josh Gordon. This young man is going to be expelled for life from the NFL if anyone picks him up.

It is telling that the Browns front office basically alerted the rest of the league that he's using again. They are letting other teams know, buyer beware, and destroying their own trade value.

1) The analysis you brought up here is much more than the analysis brought up in the original article, so I respect your comment much more than a guy saying "No".

2) There is a risk-reward aspect that I don't think you have given enough credit to. I'd give up a 6th Round pick to have Gordon for just this season on his very small contract.

3) Were the Patriots desperate idiots when they signed Randy Moss? Were the Packers desperate idiots when we signed Andre Rison? There is a long history of teams that I guess were desperate idiots who took a small risk on a guy with some concerns that paid off big time.

Aaron Nagler analyzes for roughly half an hour a day. He has provided extensive film break downs on CHTV in the past.

Occasionally, there's some things that don't need analysis, because they aren't going to realistically happen.

"Should the Packers cut ties with Aaron Rodgers and go with DeShone Kizer?"

Does that deserve analysis?

"No."

1) Your comparison is laughable because the Packers were in the running for Khalil Mack, and there has never been any consideration of cutting ties with Rodgers while having Kizer on the team.

2) When odds makers and other experts are considering the Packers a front runner for getting Khalil Mack, that takes away any question about whether an analysis is needed.

3) I don't agree with your point at all that some questions don't need analysis. No matter what the question is, the logic should be given for why someone thinks the way they do. In terms of something like Rodgers over Kizer, one could simply say that Rodgers has won a Super Bowl, won many MVP's, he's still playing at an extremely high level, and the Packers were obviously better with Rodgers than Kizer when Kizer had to come in. If someone was seriously arguing that Rodgers should be cut for Kizer and all you said was "no", that's just pretentious. Nagler does this with basically every trade potential, even when the Packers are in the mix. Reports were that the Packers were still shopping for OLB's even after missing out on Khalil Mack.

4) Obviously, comparing Josh Gordon to the Kizer question is faulty as well. What you have done here is known as the Appeal to the Extremes fallacy.

5) I really don't care how much time Nagler puts into his "analysis". I care about the product coming out. Some of us who love football put in the same amount of time or more just for fun.

There is no reason to believe the Packers are in the market for an extremely troubled WR who's been suspended for over 2 years of his 6 year career for drug infractions, and just showed up to work late and high.. Just like there's no reason to believe the Packers would cut Rodgers for Kizer. That's all. It wasn't meant to be an apples-to-apples comparison- it's just an example of a ridiculous question that, when posed, doesn't deserve the wasted air to analyze.

I don't know what Mack has to do with any of this.

At least now I understand the nature of your beef with Nagler. You believe you deserve all the opportunities to do what he's done, because, damnit, you put in the time and could do it better. Maybe that's true. Go out and get yours then (And i fully mean that.. go make it happen.). But don't be a hater. That's just not a good look.

He'll be a Patriot in the same way Moss became a Patriot and proceeded to score a touchdown practically at will with Brady throwing for 50 at a time he wanted to play for the Packers and with Brett Favre. Let's continue to revel in having the most good citizens while the Patriots have the most SB wins. Belichick has already sent Gordon the Patriot play book.

No way. If he's reliable and dependable why would the Browns release him? Packers have talented receivers that are ready and willing to play and be a part of the team. Gordon has more problems than a hamstring injury. And why would a team sign an injured player? To many risks for a player with Gordon's credentials.

I think Oppy hit the nail on the head. On a personal level you have to feel for the kid as addiction is a very tough disease to beat and he needs more help. On a business level, if the kid is using again as the Browns seemed to indicate, you can't touch him.

I think Drafthobbyest posed the wrong question. It is not whether Gordon is better then Allison (he is) but whether a potentially suspended Gordon is worth cutting any player on the current roster. I personally would much prefer an available Allison to a suspended Gordon.

Your question is not a proper one. If we trade for Gordon, we won't be cutting Allison. So if Gordon gets suspended at some point, we can just put Allison back on the field. Also, all players are potentially suspended. Right now, Gordon is not suspended. This was not a failed drug test, it was simply the team noticing him acting weirdly and hypothesizing he was on drugs. He probably uses and the risk of suspension is higher than almost any other player, but by no means is suspension certain.

I would respectfully disagree about my question. If you acquire Gordon, you must cut someone whether it is Allison or another WR. Do you cut Allison or one of the triplets for a guy that appears to have a high likelihood of being suspended. I would not. Losing Allison or one of the triplets for a high risk player is not a good decision.

Personally, I'd cut ESB if cutting a WR. The team doesn't have to cut a WR if they don't want to, as they could cut Boyle, Alex Light, or one of the other players on the team. I disagree that cutting one of these players isn't a good decision. Gordon can be the difference between a Super Bowl and not a Super Bowl. None of these others players can be.

I think we will have to agree to disagree. While Gordon can be an excellent receiver, I am not convinced he would be a difference maker as we already have very good WRs. Were he the same caliber defensive player (OLB or ILB?), I might be more inclined to take the risk as the gain would be greater.

Fun to speculate on these things but we have MVS, EQ and Moore waiting for reps as it is. Some people who have so much God-given athletic ability just don't get it because they never had to sacrifice as much as others. Remember Colt Lyerla?

The only position we would have more wiggle room with character concerns would be OLB.

I am not sure how anyone could have watched the queen game yesterday and not seen in vivid highlights how important speed and quickness at WR is and few have those with the size of gordon.

I have not noticed all the raves about Cobb this week or the snide remarks about those who thought that the position could have been upgraded. Maybe those went back and watched how blanketed Cobb was when Rodgers through him open...after 5 seconds
