Wondering Who to Root For in the Super Bowl? Here Are Some Pointers

Your rooting interest guide for the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl week has finally arrived. Everyone has their own reasons as to who they cheer for in the Super Bowl if their team isn't playing. Some people hate to see the team that beat them take home the prize. Others figure that if you're going to lose, it may as well be to the champs. Others have completely different reasons altogether.

Here are a few points for and against rooting for each team, to help you in your decision:

Kansas City Chiefs

PROS:

-The Chiefs have more Packer connections than the 49ers do. Head coach Andy Reid was a Packers assistant coach under Mike Holmgren from 1992 to 1998 before getting hired to coach the Philadelphia Eagles. Strength and Conditioning coach Barry Rubin served in the same role with the Packers from 1995 to 2005. Defensive tackle Mike Pennel played with the Packers from 2014 to 2016. Practice squad quarterback Kyle Shurmur is the grand-nephew of former Packers defensive coordinator Fritz Shurmur, who served in the role from 1994-1998.

-Andy Reid is one of the all-time good guys in the NFL, and a ring has head coach has long eluded him despite a long and successful career. A Super Bowl victory here would all but ensure him a place in Canton, as he could currently very well be the greatest coach in NFL history to never win the big one. (Note: this is why I'll be cheering for the Chiefs on Sunday)

-Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is an electric young player who is as humble as he is talented. Him winning a championship so early on could be the start of something very special in his career. He is the first quarterback in decades drafted by the Chiefs to pan out as a real franchise player.

-It's been 50 years since the Chiefs last appeared in the Super Bowl, which marked their only NFL championship. Of all the teams that have actually won the game, only the Jets have had a longer drought. This is a team and fanbase that has not experienced much in the way of real notable success over the five decades since.

-The Chiefs have a remarkably passionate fanbase and, according to most accounts, one of the best tailgating atmospheres in the NFL. As people who know something about great tailgating and fan experiences, Packer fans can certainly respect that.

CONS

-It's hard to get away from the Tyreke Hill issue. As likeable as Reid and Mahomes are, Hill has to be on the complete opposite end of the spectrum as far as likeability goes in the NFL. There's a legitimate case to be made that he should not be allowed to be playing in the league at the moment.

-Speaking of character issues, you also have to consider Frank Clark, another player with domestic violence in his past who was kicked out of Michigan.

-And let's not forget the all-too-recent controversy surrounding former Chiefs' RB Kareem Hunt.

-Finally, there's the problematic nature of the Chiefs' name, mascot and chant. While not as clearly harmful as "Redskins," it is reasonable to wonder whether or not these aspects of the Chiefs are appropriate for our modern society.

San Francisco 49ers

PROS

-They eliminated the Packers, and if you're going to lose to anyone, it may as well be to the best.

-This could go under a pro or a con, but for me personally, it's a pro. The 49ers have a lot of big-time personalities, and they can make the game a lot more fun. George Kittle might be one of the five most fun players to watch in the league right now, for his blocking, his playmaking ability and his persona. Richard Sherman is probably the biggest "love to hate" player in the NFL at the moment, and while he is generallly too abrasive for my taste, there's no denying that he backs up his bravado with outstanding play, even now at a more advanced age.

-While the 49ers' franchise itself has five Lombardis already, this iteration of the team feels completely fresh. There's not a whole lot of postseason experience on this roster or coaching staff. It's good to finally get some new faces into the game on both sides of the field.

-There's something about storied franchises in big games that can be attractive to NFL history buffs. The game just feels bigger if it has the 49ers or Packers or Steelers, for example.

CONS

-They eliminated the Packers. How dare they?

-It's not just this year. The 49ers have had the Packers' number through most of the last decade, which amounts to payback for the ownage the Packers delivered in the 90s and early 2000s.

-I have nothing against Kyle Shanahan personally, in fact I think he's a fantastic coach and will continue to be for a long time. But ever since the devastation of the loss to the Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII, I have a visceral reaction to anything Shanahan-related.

-A win would make the 49ers the third franchise to six Super Bowl victories, and they would create a bit of separation with the Packers on that list.

-There is a legitimate gripe that the 49ers have a bit of a problem with regard to fair-weather fans. Just take a look at the nearly-empty stadium photos from just last season. That's something that would never happen in Kansas City.

Oh god this was pure garbage I’ve never criticized an article but this is drenched in this new era cancel culture bull crap that I despise never letting anyone move past mistakes. If the NFL and law enforcement couldn’t find anything to condemn Hill what argument do you have? I hope anyone that agrees with this type of nonsense has NEVER done anything wrong their whole life. You mention Hunt and he’s not even on the team just grasping for straws let’s stick to football related reasons shall we? I’ll be rooting for the Chiefs solely because Andy Reid after a long storied career needs this ring I have nothing against Shanahan he’ll have more opportunities ol Andy deserves this.

Cancel culture is pretty much wanting someone’s career to end from past mistakes they may have made usually including “homophobic” remarks dug up from twitter 5 plus years ago, domestic violence guilty or not and animal abuse. Do any of these things in today’s times no matter how long ago no matter if you’re guilty or not and people want your head on plate never letting you move beyond it. It’s quite disgusting.

Mr. Dumbass,

According to many Native Americans, there is something wrong with a professional sports team being named both "Chiefs" and "Redskins". Hence why so many teams, including the Marquette Warriors, changed their name. It is clearly offensive to a minority group in this country, not some sort of "PC crap".

Love,
Point Packer

Hey, Big_Mel, most quality human beings have a problem with genocide. Not you? Which part of "it" would you like Native Americans to "get over?" Which atrocities committed against them would you like them to shake off? The poisoning and stealing of their land? Intentional starvation of thousands? The largest sanctioned mass murder in American history (in Mankato, MN, btw). The extinguishing of languages and cultures? Rapes? Disease? Broken treaties?

I'm 60 years old. I've met many Native American men my age who were taken from their families by the government, and sent to boarding schools where they were punished for speaking their native language, physically and sexually abused. Your "get over it" take reflects an all too common ignorance, one safely couched in the racism of our revisionist history. What the average tool spouting "get over it" usually says is "it happened a long time ago" and that just isn't the case. The wounds inflicted on Native Americans are fresh, and disrespecting them with racist logos, chants, and team names only cuts deeper.

There are over 500 American Indian and Alaskan Native tribes in the United States. I've had the opportunity to work on tribal land, I've always been impressed by the Veterans Memorials prominently featured on each Reservation. Native people served in the military all the way back to WWI. And it's been heartening to see languages revitalized by elders teaching children, and cultural traditions being carried by the next generation. I see, in many cases, a resilient people reclaiming what was stolen and crushed. Think about that, Mel. Native people not getting over it, but reclaiming what was theirs all along.

From NBC Sports"A new survey has found that Native Americans are more likely to be proud than offended by the name of the Washington Redskins.

The survey, as reported by the Washington Post, asked 500 people who identify as Native American to pick from a list of words which one best described their feelings about the Redskins name. The word most picked was “proud.”

Polls not opinions.

Who said anything about approving of genocide or other atrocities?
Native Americans are human beings same as anyone else, with a mixture of good and bad in their groups and as individuals.
I think your compassion is great, Leotis, but let's not become condescendingly simplistic.
A couple of relevant books I hope to read that may be of interest to well-meaning people of all races:
* "The Earth is Weeping: The Epic Story of the Indian Wars for the American West," by Peter Cozzens.
* "Constant Battles: The Myth of the Peaceful, Noble Savage," by Steven A. LeBlanc.
* "War Before Civilization: The Myth of the Peaceful Savage.," by Lawrence H. Heeley.
Also, with so many tribes in America, let's not presume to speak for all of them as to what is or isn't disrespectful.
We can love the Native Americans and appreciate the best of their cultures, while also paying them the respect of honesty about them and ourselves.
One thing we all have in common is lots of room for improvement.

"Condescendingly simplistic" from a man who's about to delve into hard-hitting literature examining "the Myth of the Peaceful Savage." Does thought determine language, or does language determine thought? Where you're heading is where you want to end up; in a place where you can be okay with how this country came to be. In the meantime, feel free to continue to spread goodwill toward all, and be the voice of reason. It's most comfortable in that headspace.

Pretty vicious, Leotis, and I hope you may reconsider.
To say that the Native Americans are perfect, or beyond reproach, is to be patronizing (even if unintentionally).
None of us is perfect.
I live near a place in northern Georgia where the Cherokee defeated another tribe in the Battle of Taliwa of 1755 to take their land.
I do think it a tragedy that America took this land from the Cherokees in the Trail of Tears of the 1830s, but that doesn't mean the Cherokees are a people of complete innocence.
By the way, there was a strong resistance by many Americans to this forced removal of the Cherokees. Davy Crockett stood up for the Cherokees, even though it apparently cost him reelection to Congress. So please don't tarnish all of us as Americans.
It doesn't seem controversial to say we're all flawed, and can do better in making this world a more peaceful place.
A good place to start could be more civility, and even kindness, in these comments.

David Treuer is a Native author worth reading. Rez Life, and The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee: Native America from 1890 to Present are excellent. Give those a try before you seek to bust the myth of the peaceful savage.

I noticed in another thread you stated you're unsure if Redskin is a derogatory term. I'll suggest you research that a bit. Maybe start with Kit Carson, and George Preston Marshall and see what you can find any respect or honor.

It's interesting to me how you've interpreted my posts through an "indians killed each other, they weren't peaceful" lens, and how you somehow see discussion of history to be an intentional act to "tarnish" all Americans. I live in Wisconsin. Racism is alive and well here. This was once Lakota land until the Ojibwe pushed them through Minnesota and into the Dakotas. Some Ho-Chuck and Menomonee returned to land no longer useful for farming or timber at the time. I suppose that shows how all the 7 deadly sins were driving Native people so they deserved to be butchered by the US Army. Medals of honor were awarded for slaughter of unarmed women and children. Cash was paid for scalps. It's nice that Davy "stood up", but that didn't quite change the outcome, did it? Must have been sad for the King of the Wild Frontier to lose his seat in Congress.

We are indeed all flawed, but guys like you and me get to be flawed and not pay for it with our health or our lives. Native people are not that fortunate. There are generational effects to trauma, that is not an opinion. I don't have any relatives who were intentionally starved to death. Do you? None of my ancestors were driven from their land to a foreign environment, forbidden to hunt, and told to take up farming. Yours?

I've been quite civil to you, and tolerant of your ignorance.

So the Native Americans are good and the European settlers are bad. Only the natives have traumas, while for the whites it's all privilege. Thanks for the nuanced history lesson, Leotis and CAG.
How presumptuous of me to try to have an honest discussion?; How dare I question your combined wisdom?
I will say that my ancestors have done nothing whatsoever to harm the Native Americans. I refuse a false burden of guilt; and refuse to be silenced by faux expertise and flawed reasoning.
By the way, how many European Americans in history have been forced into the most dirty and deafening and dangerous jobs in factories and mills and mines -- toiling in semi-slavery 12 hours per day and 6 days per week for paltry wages? How many of white privilege have fought with immense sacrifice and intense suffering in our nation's wars with little to no personal gain for themselves or their families?
Not only are you two acting as arrogant jerks, but you do a serious disservice to Native Americans by patronizing them.
For all the good intentions you may have, you divide people in a way that mostly causes anger and discord, and does little for mutual peace and prosperity.

don't confuse indentured servants with slaves another retort of the ignorant but I realize you can't help yourself. Nothing I said was remotely patronizing because it applies to all racial matters especially when it comes from someone with minimal knowledge. I hear this type of nonsense all the time the deflection tactics, freedom of speech blah blah blah literally copy and paste. Sometimes its just best to leave people in their own ignorant little bubbles and allow them to see and believe whatever it is they want. I will do just that sir.

Seriously, a con is about a player that was cut do to his conduct and you say that's on the Chiefs. And it is really sad that this site lets a pathetic person like you even write on this site considering your not indian otherwise you would have posted it I'm sure. So you get your typical white liberal complaining about something that has nothing to do with them. Just like the indians asked if they thought the Redskins name was offensive they overwhelmingly said no. So from now on you can keep your white liberal feelings about another race to yourself.

Incase you're not smart enough to figure that out on your own, that puts it in the 90 percent range. Makes your opinion lacking of facts.

Richard Sherman is on their team. After living in Seattle for over a decade and watching/listening to that loudmouth, I cringe to see that moron get another ring.

Good stuff, splitpea1. When it's said that "many" people from a group protest something, I'm skeptical. It could be the protest is from an opportunistic agitator and some radical followers who really don't represent the group at all.
Plus, I wonder if protesting something like a team logo distracts from helping that group with its real difficulties.
Especially after having lived in New Mexico, I'm quite concerned about the welfare of Native Americans. I would like to see them have better opportunities than operating casinos; and I'm not so sure that the revenues from the casinos really benefit the average Native American, anyway.
From my limited perspective, it seems that a team logo would be the least of the concerns for Native Americans, and may even be a source of legitimate pride.
In any case, a comprehensive study would be in order, lest the agenda for Native Americans be driven by a few hucksters and others (perhaps some well-meaning) who are non-representative of their people.
P.S. Come to think of it, my wife is partly Native American and registered with an Apache tribe in Arizona, as I understand it. I don't really think about it all that much, except to consider it a point of pride in her heritage.

Just because a few people have concerns doesn't mean anything should or will be done about it.... I can see how "Redskins" is offensive, though; they were originally named "Braves" after the Boston baseball team, and then changed to "Redskins" for three years before they moved to Washington. I doubt the ownership was ever too concerned with racial/ethnic matters as their market for many years was the South. I believe they were also the last team to integrate. So old habits are hard to break, and the current ownership, having grown up in the Washington area, is pretty adamant about not changing the team name.

But names like "Chiefs", "Warriors", I think, is more a sign of respect and admiration than any kind of degradation, and if I were in the shoes of the minority in question, I doubt I would take any offense to it.

In regard to the 'Chiefs' name and how some here seem offended or annoyed by it, has any player said and stood by such a statement that he would never play for a team with an assumed 'offensive name'.

I can't say one way or the other but, I'd bet that money quickly changed such thinking or such a player never spoke aloud about it, hence leaving the door for money from any, regardless of team name.

The smallest speck of crap will attract flies or human with fly to crap instinct, especially if personal relevance can be attached/derived to/from it. The writer of this article has shown himself to be that by needlessly making the team name part of the reasons.

Many here are admonished for mentioning political views here via other comment participants and site owners at times and yet the writer apparently has full endorsement and privilege to do so.

Not really a good point regarding players standing up against the names knowing the NFL has plenty of multibillionaire racists to think about. The ultimate form of cowardice name calling from behind a screen. My words clearly hit a nerve while you're only attempting to.

Its kind of funny how you sit behind your own screen, self indulging on your own pathetic superiority complex after calling people cowards and racists. But cowards name call behind a screen, right?

Where did I call anyone a racists? Where did I call anyone a coward? Its funny how we see what we want to see isn't? You jump on my comment while ignoring the guy Im replying to. A failed attempt to turn my comment against me nice try though.

After that comment everything I said was a understatement of how much a arrogant little prick you are. The self righteous ignorance is incredible.

Whats arrogant about pointing out false claims? I guess if anything it made you feel a bit idiotic causing you to lash out even more instead of being an adult and admitting you made a mistake don't worry you'll get there one day.

The venue he chose to protest, hijacked the entire premise of his protest,CAG. Fans who pay hard earned money to go to a game are there for entertainment and the NFL experience. NOT societal statements. He can work on that on his own time. By the way, how do you know if ANY of these owners is racist???

Oh the "Shut up and play football" take huh? Typical. It was a silent protest all he did was take a knee and as someone who served this country I feel he had the right to do. Even when he was out of football protesting on his own time people still hated him so please stop with that nonsense. And where exactly did I say owners were racists? You honestly don't think those are the only billionaires with influence do you? Another one seeing what they want to see lol

It's simple for me because I really dislike most NFC teams. Plus, it would be nice to Reid get a Superbowl win. Always a factor, which team has suffered the longest, and that's KC.

I want KC to win, but I think SF wins fairly easy.

I've never heard anyone complain about the Chiefs name. Others yes, but a Chief is a leader of a tribe or nation. Crazy horse and Sitting Bull were Chiefs. On the other hand, who are the chef's? A great and funny commercial.

Reid the best coach to never win a SB? Marv Levy for his team to the big onefour years in an unprecedented row! The inimitable one and myself will be departing for a Western Caribbean cruise on Super Sunday. If I see the game, fine. If not, big deal. I'm still nursing the wounds of that brutal loss, and not looking forward to next year.

I just want to see a good game.

Just about anything would be better than last year's horribly unentertaining game.

I am struck by how listing the "Cons" for KC turned out so literal.

It seems we live in an America in which the agricultural heartland and industrial rust belt have been devastated by closed factories and foreclosed houses.
As I understand it, the number of drug overdoses per year is near 70,000, while the suicides are more than 35,000. It seems stress is crushing the average American into epidemics of diabetes 2 and heart disease and addiction and divorce.
Just to get by requires working two or three jobs of some 60 hours per week with no health insurance or other benefits. Citizens are beset by insecurity and burdened with crushing debt.
The citizens whose ancestors built America with their sweat and defended it with their blood are living in wastelands of desperation -- and yet are scorned by pseudo-intellectual elitists as racist rubes and detestable deplorables of white privilege.
In general, ordinary people are being told that all of the American traditions we hold dear regarding faith and family and freedom are evil and about to be overturned. The simple pleasures of Bedford Falls are being degraded into the garish glitz of Pottersville.
In such a scenario, the long-time inhabitants would likely be more than a little touchy.
At least this is how it seems to me, Hank.

I would like to see Andy Reid win a Super Bowl. I still can not believe Ron Wolf hired Ray Rhodes instead of him when Mike Holmgren left for Seattle. A black mark on Wolf’s record.

Easy choice for me, I lived in KC a decade ago and I now live in the Bay Area. There’s no way I want to live around 9ers fans after a super bowl win. Go Chiefs!!!

The Chiefs better not start the game behind by 21 or 24 points to the 49er's. I like Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes reminds me a lot of Brett Favre. I'll be rooting for the Chiefs and also for the former Packer assistant to win his first ring as a head coach. I think the Chiefs fan base are more loyal to their team as well. Coming from behind like they did in both playoff games shows a lot of character and determination and team effort. They have a never give up attitude.

Definitely the Chiefs. I do not want the winers tying the cheatriots and the squeelers with six Lombardi's. My older brother is a niners fan and I want to give it to him good for what he just gave me. Plus it just isn't fair if Andy doesn't get his just do. And you're right about the name Shanahan, makes me sick!!! I also love it thatthe Chiefs beat the Queens 50 years ago in the SB. GO CHIEFS GO!!!!

I’ll root for what ever team my money rides on....so that will be SF because D wins championships 80%+ of the time. I’ll take those odds to the bank.

Tyrek Hill and Frank Clark are fair game. So is Hunt, to a lesser degree. But, then comes the politically correct crap. The Redskins name, the Chiefs name, mascot and chant. GET OVER IT! No surprise he's a UW grad. I say, long live the Redskins, Chiefs and the tomahawk chop. This is the Super Bowl, focus on football please.
