49ers Fire Offensive Coordinator

The San Francisco 49ers have fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, reports Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network.

The pre-season favorites to win the NFC West, the 49ers are 0-3 as communication issues have plagued the offense in the first three weeks of the season. The 49ers are currently ranked 20th in the NFL in total offense, but rank 31st in scoring offense and on third downs.

Singletary gave Raye a vote of confidence on Sunday, telling reporters after the 49ers' 31-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs that Raye would be the offensive coordinator for the remainder of the season.

49ers quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson will assume the coordinator duties, La Canfora adds.

After a Week 1 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, a Yahoo! Sports report claimed that the plays calls that Raye was sending to the sideline were garbled, and that Raye had a tendency to blame the players when things went wrong, which led to resentment in the locker room.

The 49ers, including several offensive players, denied the report.

Another factor in the offense's struggles is that 49ers quarterback Alex Smith is not on the same page as second-year wide receiver Michael Crabtree, who is expected to be a top play-maker in Raye's offense.

Crabtree, who missed all four of the pre-season games with a sore neck, has just six receptions for 81 yards, despite being targeted on 19 pass plays this season.
