Nothing Imminent Between Eagles, Jeff Garcia

Since the Philadelphia Eagles traded quarterback Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins, talk of 40-year old free agent quarterback Jeff Garcia signing with the Eagles to back-up Kevin Kolb has heated up.

Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News reports that, although discussions have taken place, a signing is not imminent.

"Noted in my last post here that I wouldn't be surprised to see Jeff Garcia come back for a third stint with the Eagles. Since then, other folks have chimed in, which helps create anticipation," Bowen wrote.

"To clarify, I've talked to an Eagles source and a source close to Garcia, and though both sides acknowledge the possibility, that discussions have occurred, I'm told nothing is imminent."

Garcia appeared in eight games for the Eagles in 2006, starting for an injured Donovan McNabb in the final six games. Garcia led the team into the post-season, where they lost to the New Orleans Saints in the divisional playoffs. Garcia was not re-signed by the Eagles after that season, and signed a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

When McNabb injured his ribs in the 2009 season-opener, the Eagles signed Garcia, who had been cut by the Oakland Raiders at the end of training camp, to serve as a back-up to Kolb. Garcia appeared in one game, and had 3 rush attempts for -2 yards and lost a fumble.

Garcia was released by the Eagles once McNabb was healthy and Michael Vick's two-game suspension had ended.

Garcia's professional career began with the CFL's Calgary Stampeders after he went undrafted coming out of San Jose State in 1994. Garcia was an All-Star in four of his five seasons in Calgary, and signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers in 1999.

During his ten-year NFL career, which has included four trips to the Pro Bowl, Garcia has completed 61.6% of his pass attempts for 25,537 yards, with 161 touchdowns and 83 interceptions.
