Buccaneers Sign 7th Round DE Erik Lorig

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced the signing of seventh-round defensive end Erik Lorig.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The Buccaneers also announced that they have released first-year safety Emanuel Cook and undrafted rookie long-snapper Chris Mauriello.

The 6-3, 281-pound Lorig began his college career at Stanford as a tight end, catching three passes for 21 yards in 12 games’ worth of action as a freshman. Lorig converted to defensive end as a sophomore, starting 8 of 12 games, while posting 37 tackles, including 2 quarterback sacks.

Lorig started 12 games at right defensive end as a junior, and entered 2009 on the Ted Hendricks Award watch list. A strained groin limited Lorig to five games last season, and a pectoral injury has not only kept him from working out during the draft process, but has sidelined him throughout the Buccaneers’ organized team activity sessions.

Lorig is the fourth of the Buccaneers' nine picks in the 2010 NFL Draft to sign a contract. A long-shot to make the Buccaneers’ 53-man roster, Lorig is a solid developmental prospect who is likely headed for the team’s practice squad.
