Chargers Sign TE Randy McMichael
By admin
Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reports the San Diego Chargers have signed veteran free agent tight end Randy McMichael to a one-year deal.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
McMichael caught 34 passes for 332 yards and a touchdown last season for the St. Louis Rams, the final season of a three-year, $11 million dollar contract McMichael signed with St. Louis after being released by the Miami Dolphins.
A fourth-round pick (114th overall) out of the University of Georgia by the Dolphins in 2002, the 6-3, 255-pound McMichael has caught 367 passes for 3,996 yards and 22 touchdowns during his eight-year career.
McMichael adds veteran insurance behind Antonio Gates, the six-time Pro Bowl tight end who has battled foot injuries the last few seasons. Gates visited a foot specialist in North Carolina last week, and while the injury is not considered serious, the Chargers do not have much depth behind Gates. Veteran Kris Wilson has caught just 4 passes during his two seasons in San Diego, and the other three tight ends on the roster, led by seventh-round pick Dedrick Epps, have never played in an NFL game.
