Kansas City Chiefs second-round cornerback Javier Arenas recently parted ways with C. Lamont Smith of All-Pro Sports & Entertainment. According to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post, Arenas has hired Hadley Engelhard, of Atlanta-based Enter-Sports to represent him.

Engelhard also represents Chiefs fifth-round pick Cameron Sheffield, who signed a four-year contract with the team last Friday.

Speaking of Sheffield, he and fellow fifth-round pick Kendrick Lewis received fully guaranteed roster bonuses in lieu of a signing bonus in their rookie contracts. This was a bit of a curveball, since roster bonuses are not subject to forfeiture, nor are they prorated over the life of a contract the way signing bonuses are. With a Top 5 pick to sign, it would seem strange for the Chiefs to use over $300K of their rookie pool allotment when that amount could be spread over the next four years.

After doing a bit of digging through the CBA, Article XXIV, Section 7(b)(iv), Subsection (11) states that any "Salary advance, off-season workout bonus, off-season roster bonus, or off-season reporting bonus that is guaranteed for skill, injury, and Salary Cap terminations, on a non-contingent basis for all the guarantees" is to be treated as a signing bonus.

The guarantees on Sheffield and Lewis' roster bonuses are unconditional, thus they're treated as signing bonuses, and prorated over the life of the contract.
