Cowboys "Likely" to Hire Jason Garrett

Dallas Cowboys interim head coach Jason Garrett will likely have the interim tag removed from that title, Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Citing team sources, Hill reports that Garrett has convinced the team that he's the right man for the job, leading the Cowboys to a 4-3 record since taking over for Wade Phillips, who was fired after the team's 1-7 start.

The Cowboys will have to satisfy the Rooney Rule, which requires teams interview at least one minority candidate for coaching and general manager positions, before officially hiring Garrett.

Hill adds that Cowboys wide receiver Ray Sherman has already been identified by owner Jerry Jones as an interview candidate that would satisfy that requirement. Locating an internal candidate is necessary, as minority coaches on other teams may not want to be seen as a token candidate, especially in the wake of what Minnesota Vikings interim head coach Leslie Frazier has gone through in recent off-seasons. (Frazier appears on track to get his long-deserved head coaching job this month.)

A longtime assistant coach in the NFL, Sherman could be Garrett's choice for offensive coordinator with the Cowboys.
