Crabtree's Apathy Believed to be Elephant in 49ers' Locker Room

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree and tight end Vernon Davis were involved in animated discussion on the sideline during the team's walk-through on Wednesday.

Head coach Mike Singletary got involved, and the three men left the field and entered the team's locker room. Davis emerged first, and then Singletary and Crabtree. Matthew Barrows of the Sacramento Bee has a solid timeline of events.

Singeltary addressed the issue with the media.

"There are no more elephants in the room," Mike Singletary said today. "The elephant was exposed.

"How many of you guys have families?," Singletary asked. "So you have kids, and every now and then your kids have misunderstandings or what have you. And they forget that there is a father at home.

"Vernon and Crabtree--just to let you know--I will not talk about the issue. But I will talk about this. They were both wrong. And we will not have distractions on this team. Vernon just forgot temporarily that this is not allowed. We don't do that. We don't treat family like that. We don't disrespect each other. I just needed to remind him that's not who were are."

Singletary acknowledged that Davis, who displayed a lack of maturity in the early part of his career but is now a team captain, did the right thing, he just went about it the wrong way.

"He's fine. He did a great job. He's one of the captains. He did the right thing, but he did it the wrong way. So that's all I'm going to say about that."

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com believes the "elephant" in the room is Crabtree's perceived apathy towards training camp and the pre-season games. Crabtree went unsigned into October of his rookie season, and a "mild neck strain" has kept him from participating in any of the 49ers' pre-season games this season.
