JaMarcus Russell Grievance Hearing Scheduled for Nov. 30

A grievance hearing between the Oakland Raiders and quarterback JaMarcus Russell is scheduled for November 30, FOX-31's Josina Anderson reports.

The hearing is in regards to the repayment of $9.55 million the Raiders paid Russell, who they chose with the first overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft.

Signed to a six-year contract that included $29.01 million in guarantees and had a maximum value of $68 million on September 12, 2007, Russell completed 52.1% of 680 pass attempts for 4,083 yards with 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptions, compiling a 65.2 passer rating in 31 games, including 25 starts, for the Raiders.

Due to his high salary, lack of productivity, and questions about his weight--which was reportedly 300 pounds at one point this off-season--and dedication to the game, Oakland released Russell on May 6.

Since his release, Russell has been arrested for possession of a controlled substance after a raid at his Mobile, Alabama home turned up codeine syrup, which is used along with Sprite to make "lean" or "Purple Drank". Russell plead not guilty to the charges on August 11. Marcus Stevenson, a friend of Russell's, has claimed responsibility for the codeine syrup.

Russell addressed the drug charge during a surprise appearance this morning on The John Clayton Show on 710 ESPN Seattle.

"It's an open case and I can't speak on it, but things will be acquitted in a matter of time," Russell said. "They're still working on that. It will be thrown away as soon as possible."

Russell says he's been working out with John Lucas in Houston as he attempts to make a comeback to the NFL, and now weighs 277 pounds. He also expressed how the expectations to produce results immediately, as well as missing training camp, contributed to the unsuccessful start to his career.

"I think being a first-round draft pick going anywhere, the expectations are out the doors," said Russell. "Because they're so used to what you've been doing and you have to do that right away. At least that what they think. You need the guys around you to make that happen. Everybody needs to be on the same page.

"Training camp is, you know, you have to be there to get that feeling with the teammates, especially with the playbook and the new things that they put in each and every day. I think it played a big part in it," Russell said before adding some advice to incoming players. "From me to newcomers, hey, if you can, you know, you need to get in there as soon as possible and be a better help to your team."

The 25-year old quarterback is looking to get back in the NFL, but has no intentions of playing in the United Football League.

"As a kid growing up, you don't dream of going to the UFL," Russell told Clayton. "Your dreams are set upon the NFL. NFL is one of the leagues where its kind of at the top and at its best, and I know that I can be a part of that, and that's just where my mind's set right now."
