Two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Muhsin Muhammed will announce his retirement today at a 12:30pm ET press conference, Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer reports.
A second-round pick (43rd overall) out of Michigan State by the Carolina Panthers in the 1996 NFL Draft, Muhammad ranks 16th in NFL history with 860 receptions, and 20th in NFL history with 11,438 yards.
Muhammad spent the first nine season of his 14-year career with the Panthers, catching 578 passes for 7,751 yards and 44 touchdowns, earning Pro Bowl honors after the 1999 and 2004 seasons.
Muhammad signed a six-year, $30 million dollar contract with the Chicago Bears. A starter in 47 of 48 regular season games during three seasons with the Bears, Muhammad led the team in receiving in 2005 and 2006, and totaled 147 receptions for 2,183 yards and 12 touchdowns before the Bears released him after the '07 season.
Re-signed by the Panthers, Muhammad started 28 of 30 games over the last two seasons, where he's finished second on the team in both receptions and yards. Muhammad retires as the Panthers' all-time leader in receptions (696), receiving yards (9,255), and is tied with Steve Smith for most receiving touchdowns, with 50.
Muhammad added 30 receptions for 558 yards and 3 touchdowns in 9 post-season games, including 7 receptions for 175 yards and two touchdowns in a pair of Super Bowl appearances, both losses.
Muhammad is among 25 current and former NFL players scheduled to participate in the NFL's Broadcast Bootcamp at NFL Films in New Jersey later this month.
