Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez Failed Multiple Drug Tests at Florida

Albert Breer of the Boston Globe reports multiple failed drug tests for marijuana at the University of Florida led to the drop in tight end Aaron Hernandez's draft stock.

"It’s not like he failed one test," and AFC college scout told Breer. "He had repeated issues with it, to the point where you worry about whether he’ll be able to lay off the stuff at our level. To be honest, he’s super talented and, even with the issues, I’m surprised he fell as far he did.

"Depending on who you talk to, some people thought he was a late first- or early second-round prospect. Eventually, the risk was overcome by the value."

Hernandez admitted to the positive tests to NFL personnel executives, which helped his cause, but couldn't keep from him being drafted on the first two days of the draft. New England chose the 6-2, 250-pound Hernandez with the 113th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

A similar situation led to USC tight end Anthony McCoy falling to the sixth-round, when he chosen with the 185th overall pick by the Seattle Seahawks, who are coached by Pete Carroll, McCoy's coach at USC.

Georgia Tech running back Jonathan Dwyer tested positive at the Combine for a prescription medication, and was chosen three spots after McCoy.
