Position Difference Why Jones-Drew Can Host Radio Show

Late last month, it was announced that Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew would be hosting a fantasy football radio show on Sirius/XM radio on Friday nights this fall. Thoughts immediately turned to Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio canceling quarterback David Garrard's weekly radio show, which was also broadcast on Fridays, during the 2009 season.

"Less than 48 hours away from the game, it's not even a question," Del Rio said last October. "I don't even understand how anybody could ever advise somebody to think about doing something like that. It makes no sense...

"If you're not studying film, you ought to be relaxing with the family," Del Rio said.

Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union reports that the reason Jones-Drew can host a show, while Garrard can not, is because they play different positions.

"Clearly, the preparation involved with playing running back is very different than that of a quarterback," Del Rio said.

"Maurice and I spoke about him hosting a national fantasy football show this fall. Maurice is one of the more popular players in fantasy football leagues, and this is a bit of a hobby for him. This is during the season, and obviously our game preparation is important, but Maurice understands that."

If the Jaguars, or Jones-Drew, get off to a slow start, don't be surprised if Del Rio channels his inner Andy Travis and cancels another radio show.
