Ravens May Want to Think About Extending Flacco's Contract

After the Baltimore Ravens' 30-7 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, former Washington Redskins salary cap analyst J.I. Halsell mentioned that with the franchise quarterback market perpetually on the rise, it wouldn't be surprising to see quarterback Joe Flacco receive a contract extension.

Flacco has two years remaining on a five-year, $29.75 million rookie contract, and while nothing is likely to happen until a new collective bargaining agreement is in place, a look inside the deal shows that extending the franchise quarterback's contract soon might be a good idea.

According to the NFLPA salary database, Flacco is currently scheduled to earn base salaries of $2.785 million in 2011 and $3.11 million in 2012. $5.895 million over two seasons would be a bargain for a franchise quarterback, but according to a source with access to the finer details of Flacco's contract, those figures will be increasing.

Flacco's playing time in 2010 will add $1.5 million to each year's salary, with his 2011 rate increasing by an additional $200,000 via Sunday's playoff win over the Chiefs. With each playoff game the Ravens win, another $200,000 will be tacked onto Flacco's salary the following season.

As long as the 6-6, 240-pound Flacco continues to take nearly all of the team's snaps, his 2012 salary will increase by an additional $1.95 million, putting his 2011-12 base salary total at slightly over $11 million.

Through individual regular season performances, Pro Bowl nods, and the Ravens' performances in the next two post-seasons, Flacco can further increase his base salaries by nearly $2.5 million.

With a salary cap expected to return in the next CBA, and Flacco establishing himself as a franchise quarterback, the Ravens may want to roll some of this non-guaranteed money coming Flacco's way into a long-term extension
