Redskins to Sign P Hunter Smith

The Washington Redskins will sign free agent punter Hunter Smith to a one-year deal, the Washington Post reports.

A seventh-round pick (210th overall) in 1999 out of Notre Dame by the Indianapolis Colts, Smith has a career net average of 35.6 yards on 634 punts during his 11-year career.

Smith averaged 36.8 yards on 57 punts in 13 games for the Redskins last season.

Redskins punter Josh Bidwell injured his hip during warm-ups before the team's Week 3 loss to the St. Louis Rams, with place-kicker Graham Gano handling the punting duties that day. Bidwell returned last week, averaging 33.2 yards on five punts, but is listed as "Did not participate" on today's injury report.

Bidwell may be involved in a corresponding move to add Smith, which is expected to be announced on Thursday.
