Texans, Andre Johnson Announce New Contract

The Houston Texans announced that they have reached a new contract with four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Andre Johnson.

In 102 games since being chosen with the 3rd overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft out of the University of Miami, Johnson (6-3, 219) has caught 587 passes for 7,948 yards and 42 touchdowns, earning trips to the Pro Bowl after the 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2009 seasons.

Johnson led the NFL in receptions in 2006 and 2008, and in receiving yards in each of the past two seasons, earning first-team All-Pro honors. Johnson's increased production contributed to Johnson's belief that he had outperformed the 8-year, $59.7 million extension he signed in 2007.

Texans general manager Rick Smith said that re-worked contract will keep Johnson in Houston through 2016, "essentially making him a Texan for life".

Johnson's previous deal ran through the 2014 season.

"It's important to us that Andre have one home, and that's with the Texans," owner Bob McNair said. "He'll probably be our first Hall of Famer."

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the Houston Chronicle reports Johnson signed a two-year contract extension worth $38.5 million, with $13 million guaranteed. Added to the five years and $35 million remaining on his current deal, Johnson will earn $73.5 million over the next 7 seasons, a $10.5 million per year average.
