Packers 37 Saints 30: Game Balls and Lame Calls
Gutty Packers overcome injuries to register huge road win.

Playing with tremendous poise and clutch execution, the Green Bay Packers overcame several injuries to key players and accomplished something they hadn't done in a quarter century. They beat the feisty New Orleans Saints in the Superdome. The Packers are off to a 3-0 start and definitely belong in the early Super Bowl contender conversation. It's not always pretty, especially on defense, but it sure is sweet. On to some well deserved recognition:
GAME BALLS
Aaron Rodgers
I am officially creating the Hard Count Hall of Fame and Rodgers is the one and only member. His irresistable verbal punches caught the Saints offsides at critical moments, including the free play to Lazard in the end zone resulting in pass interference and setting up the decisive touchdown. Oh yeah, he also threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns. On a night when the offense was under huge pressure to score on nearly every drive, Rodgers was unflappable. No Davante Adams? No problem. Rodgers drew his tight ends, backs and receivers into the game masterfully, showing patience, and not turning the ball over. His massaging of the clock on the final scoring drive was a thing of beauty. I know Russell Wilson is off to a great start, but QB12 is my MVP right now.
Alan Lazard
Is he good enough to be a legit number two receiver? Shoot, we're not even asking that question anymore. With Davante out, it was up to Lazard to step up and be a number one. He responded with six catches for 146 yards and a touchdown. His best grab was a 48 yard bomb on which he stumbled while tracking the ball and still reeled it in while trying to regain his balance. Later he crossed the secondary for a 72 yard reception. A coming out party? Looked like one to me.
Robert Tonyan
Did I say coming out party? How about a breakout party? In a game where the Packers desperately needed production from the tight end position, Tonyan rang up 5 catches for 50 yards and a score. Can't you just feel the confidence growing in him with every catch? Just throw him the dang ball.
Marcedes Lewis
His TD play was supposed to be a short, possession route to get a first down and move the chains. When it wasn't there Big Dog had the presence of mind to loop down the sideline where Rodgers dropped a pretty ball to him. There was no push off, despite what NBC announcers would have you believe. More on that later. Lewis also combined with Billy Turner to spring Aaron Jones for his three yard TD run in the third quarter. Just great to see the "old dog" still doing his thing and making key contributions.
Kingsley Keke
Another guy filling big shoes, Keke got his second start when Kenny Clark was made inactive again with that groin problem. While the Saints did have success pushing the ball through the middle of the defense, Keke did make two impressive sacks and showed he can play the nose with a reasonable amount of stoutness. You can see him starting to make that second year step the Packers so desperately need him to make.
Honorable Mentions
Jace Sternberger with three catches for 36 yards. Welcome to the offense Jace! Zadarious Smith, neutralized much of the game by the Saints excellent tackles, Z-man made the biggest defensive play of the game, knocking the ball out of Taysom Hill's hands and recovering the fumble. It turned the momentum back to the Green and Gold at a critical juncture.
LAME CALLS
No Roughing Penalty on J.K. Scott's Punt
The Saints defender clearly rolled up on Scott's plant leg after the kick. It wasn't done with much force, but it did cause Scott to fall to the turf. At the very least it should have been running into the kicker.
Getting Too Cute Near the Goal Line
Third quarter, first and goal from the three, the Packers passed on first down and passed on third down, both fell incomplete. Just pound the dang thing up the gut! Which is exactly what Aaron Jones did on 4th down for the score.
Not Getting Cute Enough at Midfield
Fourth quarter, 4th and one from their own 48 yard line, the Saints have nine men in the box, yet Green Bay runs Aaron Jones right into the brick wall. This is where we missed Davante Adams. That's a situation where Rodgers would fake to Jones and Davante would deke his man and be wide open in the flat for an easy first down catch.
NBC Announcers Claiming OPI on Lewis
What am I missing? I've watched the play several times and I just don't see it. Marcedes lays his left hand on the chest of the defender and then lifts it up to catch the ball. I don't see the shove. I just don't.
SHORT YARDAGE
• I've seen enough of Alvin Kamara. Don't wanna see him anymore. On his long TD reception he broke five, count them, five tackles. Redmond, Summers, Amos, Alexander and Savage all whiffed on him.
• It took tremendous discipline from Sternberger and Lazard to patiently wait for that onside kick to squirt out of bounds. I thought surely one of them would try to pounce on it and risk having it slip away.
• Comment from NBC analyst Cris Collinsworth: "This Packers defense is built for shootouts". Was that a compliment or a cut?
• Favorite snapshot from the game: Rodgers toweling off Lazard after the latter's touchdown catch.
• Best celebration so far: The defense doing a line dance after the Zadarious fumble recovery.
THEY SAID IT
Aaron Rodgers: "Right now, our offense, I feel really good about it. We got in a good flow, and again Matt (LaFleur) had a really nice flow with the calls. We did a nice job on third down."
Alan Lazard: "This is everything I've been prepared for.....it was only going to be, not necessarily a matter of time, but I mean I was just waiting for my opportunity."
Kingsley Keke: "We know the offense is going to do their thing when they get the ball and we know we can do our thing as well so it's just playing our standard of football."
Matt LaFleur: "We've just got to become more consistent as a defense. There are times when we're firing at a high level and then there are times when teams get big plays or consistently march down the field."

It sure was frustrating to know the Saints dink and dunk offense was coming and seeing the Packer DBs lined up 10 yard off the ball.
On twitter, someone I follow for Packer commentary made the comment that Pettine's best job was when he had the least amount of talent at his disposal. It's not my comment so I don't want to steal credit. But it was a really good one.

So the defense allowed 27 points through 3 quarters, and NO got the ball back after a punt with about 13 minutes to go.
NO averaged 8.3 yards per carry in the first half, both Murray and Kamara were dominating.
Saints ran the ball 0 times in the fourth quarter.
I'd argue that GB's defense looked better in the fourth because the Saints allowed them to. Rather than keeping with what was working, like SF in the NFC Championship game, the Saints went away from the run and paid for it. Saints had to pass later in the game when they were down, but with 13 to go in the 4th, the game was tied and they had the ball. They could have ran the ball down Pettine's throat and gone on a 6 minute touchdown drive, instead they passed and took the ball out of their RBs hands in favor of their backup QB.
I don't think Pettine deserves credit for the Saints poor decisions.

Packer D made an adjustment and started shooting players into the gaps. If you recall we were penetrating into the backfield later in the game.

Well, they tried, but Hill gave the game away...
Otherwise the Saints had the ball about 4:30 total in the 4th and only about 30 seconds of that were they not trailing.

Love the determination and grit of this team. Just find a way to win.... We need to keep pace with the Bears who seem to stumble across their wins. Our defense needs to continue to be timely and Z's fumble recovery provided the spark. Our injuries created opportunities for back ups to gain needed experience and playing time. Atlanta will test us deep and often. Game by game, make adjustments... Go Pack...

Game Balls:
Aaron Rodgers - When is the last time we have seen Rodgers out there just having fun like this. Its just simply really fun watching how he is playing right now! He is dialed in!!!
Lazard - To have this kind of performance on Sunday night football for everyone to see, without Adams just put everyone in the league on notice. With Adams coming back they won't be able to double everyone.
Keke - Absolutely love Keke! He reminds me a bit of a young Cullen Jenkins. He just gets it as a pass rusher. He knows how to get the QB.
Lame Calls:
Tackling - It feels like we missed 30 tackles last night. I get that Kamara is a very tough player to tackle, but damn.
Pettine - Its not hard to figure Brees out. He can't throw the ball 20 plus yards downfield. All he ever does is throws underneath and lets his players do all the work. Run everyone deep and throw underneath and let Kamara gain all the yards. To not find a way to defend that is a mystery to me. Put 2 players on Kamara on every play. Let the CB's cover 1 on 1. Its a pretty good recipe for a win.
Short Yardage:
Comment from NBC analyst Cris Collinsworth: "This Packers defense is built for shootouts". Was that a compliment or a cut?-
I thought it was a compliment when he said it. I took it more as the defense is built to play with a lead and stop the pass. They have a really good pass rush and really good CB's. I believe he was talking about King and the CB's when he made that comment. I could be wrong about that. But that is why I thought his comment was a compliment and not a dig at them.

Most of the night, he made the Packers look like they were playing with cement shoes. The kid has elite COD and acceleration.

Yes, he made the Packers look bad. But, he is a phenomenal football player.
What I don't understand is why Z is rushing inside a double team on the edge. This scheme really has zero gap integrity. Z isn't a stupid guy, I doubt he's just thinking 'F it'.

Lazard is becoming a quality #2 WR’s and growing up right before our eyes. Very impressive game and this man can block! TE’s were very good in receiving and blocking. I miss seeing Deguara in the game.

I was shocked they didn't bring in Dillon. What else do they have him for?
I am very happy with 3-0! But I don't know if I ever saw a team win like that getting absolutely nothing from it's whole rookie class. Did any drafted rookies even play a snap not on Special Teams?

I'm with you in wondering why Dillon is not being used more.
I'm trying to talk myself into thinking that Dillon was high milage out of college so a "red shirt" year will let some residual wear and tear heal up. Since they are winning, it's working so far. It doesn't hurt that Jones and Williams have been so good in front of him on the depth chart. But those short yardage spots sure look like the kind of place to work Dillon into the mix more.

How about Ty Summers and Krys Barnes for at least an Honorable Mention?
Not to slight Rashan Gary, but Damn, it was nice to see a Linebacker (or two) not named Smith making some plays. Summers' play in the middle was a lot better than "not bad", and Barnes did some nice things outside. It'll be fun to watch these guys progress.

How good would this team be if the Packers would had drafted a stud wide receiver in the first round a solid defensive lineman in the second and a solid inside linebacker in the third round. They have received little to no contributions from any of their first three picks in the Packers are still undefeated. Matt LaFleur is proving to be an excellent head coach and taking what he has and making it flourish

I've come to trust Gute and Co in the drafting department. Love is ARod's replacement. Cute wanted him and went after him. AJ Dillon was being scouted by the Packers since high school. The Packers loved what they saw in him and grabbed him in with our second pick. Building for the future, and planning things around upcoming free agency periods, is a smart move by Packers' mgmt.

The Packers are winning in spite of Gutes FLUBS in free agency and the draft. The only good thing he's done since he's been there was signing the Smith Brothers at outside linebackers besides that everything he has done has basically been unproductive. I give all the credit to Matt LaFleur the coaching staff and Aaron Rodgers for taking an average at best roster to the point where they are now at a Superbowl caliber level.

The top WRs were GONE by the time Gutedkunst was up to bat. He could n't move up for a guy that was not there. Pederson bagging Reagor at #21 set the scene. The queens made a great choice for Jefferson, then Lynch wasted a bunch of picks to move on Aiyuk, a guy with talent but an injury history as per his time off the field for the 49rs. His move on Love was solid. The next tier guys were similar to the dudes already on the roster. I will take Lazard overHiggins(MVS) and Shenault (injuries). Van Jefferson or Edwards are guys that merited the two pick ,but they were snatched by Gruden and J ville before the Pack was on the clock. The Scouts rated four guys as valid one picks and they were correct. The only question mark I have is Ruggs. A speed guy but without a sound route tree and technique.

After a great game against Detroit, MVS was noticeably absent against the Saints. I would love to review the film to see how/why those deep passes from Rodgers kept going over MVS's head. Was it Rodgers? MVS? Defense?

Rodgers said in his post-game the Saints were very concerned about MVS deep, and were focused on taking that away. (which, of course, opened things up for Lazard).

However, on a couple of overthrows there was some space between MVS and the D. This has become a recurring theme , which leads me to believe that the timing is off between the two.

Lattimore, the faster of their 2 CBs, followed MVS around all night. That put Jenkins mostly on Lazard, and Lazard made him look bad.
Someone above said "we're watching Lazard grow up," and I'm honestly rethinking my assessment of him. Love him to pieces as a story and a person, and he was an outstanding college WR at Iowa State, but I didn't think he'd be much more than a #3/possession WR in the NFL. Glad to have him prove me wrong...just keep going!

I thought 2 of the 3 were just covered well and Rodgers threw them away basically.
The 3rd had them looking at each other and shaking their heads, so I think MVS may have misread the ball in the air and failed to make the right read and play on the ball.
I wasn't expecting the long ball to be that successful for the Pack against this D, so I was not surprised by that or that the TEs and Lazard all thrived on short catches that they added YAC to. It was the real soft spot of the defense and we took advantage at last.

A game ball for Jamaal Williams. Guy got blown up on a run near the goal-line and, per usual, does not fumble the ball. Could have been a game changing play for a RB with lesser focus on ball security. Small detail, but it was a big non-play.

Game Ball: Patrick and Turner subbed beautifully.
Lame Ball: With a limited Brees, I kept waiting for the DBs to jump a route. I saw Jaire do so once,forcing an incompletion. Don’t know who needs to take ownership of that approach, Pettine or Gray.

Probably 3 times out of 4 when you see a catch like Mercedes Lewis had there will be a push-off. In this case there clearly was not. I think their mouths ran ahead of their eyes, and they just couldn't admit they were wrong when they rolled the tape.
Everyone has been saying that Aaron Jones' number gets bigger every game. Does anyone think that today? Seeing Kamara and Jones on the same field, does anyone still think that the Packers MUST break the bank for Jones? I don't.

Besides the Packers 37 - 30 game last night other NFL scores yesterday included games of 38 - 31, 31-13, 31 - 30, 36 - 7, 36-20, 36 - 9, 34-20, 30-26. and 35-32.
14 teams scored over 30 points. 4 teams that scored 30 or more lost. Lack of defense is a league wide problem.

Part of the reason is that the refs have been told to not call OL holding unless it is obvious. Threw two weeks holding calls were down 78%.

Actually, the way offense is now being played in the NFL is a shift that hasn't been seen since the 80s West Coast Offense. McCarthy was still forcing that on the best QB in history just 3 short years ago, remember?
Now that you've seen that sort of offense in action by our very own Packers, you might want to consider that it's not a failing of defenses around the league.
It's going to take years before defenses catch up, partly because it's going to require a huge shift in thinking about the sizes of players at numerous positions and what sort of athletes are needed to thwart this sort of offense (I guess it doesn't have a name, but MLF is part of its family tree).
It even seems like Pettine is trying to adjust scheme and personnel, but I don't think anyone has the answer and offenses just generally seem more unstoppable than ever (at least the good ones running this type of scheme with good personnel).

Le Fleur actually runs a scheme closer to the Bill Walsh offense with the natural touch of Sid Gilman/ LaVell Edwards and the motion of Bud Wilkerson. The TE/FB/HB interplay is key to winning football. Walsh used Roger Craig/Rathman and Brent Jones. Holmgren played Dorsey Levens with William Henderson and Chumura/Keith Jackson. The three and four ring circus iso offense of McCarthy was not pure West Coast. He looked for iso and match up s disregarding the TE powering the Edge and the RB getting a 1:1 and stressing the LBs. Eddie LAcy was no threat in the passing game.

Great job by the offense putting up 37 against a good saints defense. The NBC announcers we’re totally remiss in mentioning Malcolm Jenkins grabbing Mercedes Lewis’s jersey on that touchdown pass . He also made contact after 5 yards and tried to redirect Lewis and pin his right arm down. The play could’ve easily been called passed interference on Jenkins or at least a hold. The refs let them arm wrestle and made a no call which honestly was the right call. Touchdown Green Bay.

That was my thought when I saw the replay. Both players were active with their hands but didn't go overboard (and the defense was closer than Lewis was with the grab). It was a good non-call to let the vets play.

Lazard: Seriously, where would we be without him and how was it that he didn't even get drafted? He sure fits in with what we need to do....
I interpreted the "built for shootouts" comment to be a misstatement; it obviously makes no sense and Collinsworth was just sort of yapping away as the Saints were driving once again.
There were three other games yesterday where each team scored at least thirty points, so shootouts are becoming pretty commonplace, anyway.

I am puzzled why no Dillon in short yardage , he's a football player I'm not buying the afraid to fumble excuse, Ty Summers will only improve he should have played more last season , why was our secondary playing so far back ? Since the Packers don't believe in stud inside linebacker then with the injury to Clark they should find another big body to help stop the run either trade a little used player or a late round draft pick , I know thumbs down coming but Clay can play inside and outside if needed , just a suggestion.

I would suggest you email Gute directly telling him that you would be willing to pay CM3 's salary under the table if he were willing to sign him. If that doesnt sound attractive to you i would guess it would be a no deal. The Pack can not afford whatever money Clay would want!

Well if you are ok with watching runners run wild up the Packers gut then maybe you should get tested for corona , who says Clay would be too expensive? You keyboard warriors have it all figured out I guess.

We need to go for it now. A trade for an impact defender will be needed. I would give up a third rounder for the Giants Williams. He's in a contract year on a losing team who is having a very good year.

Agree on the game balls although I would add Z. Smith. His forced fumble and recovery was the decisive play of the game. Add Summers to the honorable mentions.
Lame calls: The two long plays by Kamara. I realize he is a great player but take out those 2 plays and the Packers probably holds the Saints under 20. Maybe only 13.

Game ball goes to the refs and Taysom Hill. The BS Horse collar was huge, and had Taysom Hill not fumbled the Pack gets it's first loss of the year. Kudos to the refs for calling 4 terrible calls against the Saints...and thanks for cheating and attempting to give the Packers an entire yard on the unsuccessful 4th and 1 run...
