Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - A List

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Two weeks until training camp begins, Packers fans - and then we can finally get out of silly season. Lists, rankings and grades are everywhere and each time another headline comes across my feed, I die a little more inside. Am I supposed to care that Jordan Love was only #72 in the NFL's top-100 or not in the top-10 on ESPN's QB list?  Should I spend all day on twitter (I still call it that) defending his honor to ultracrepidarian Bears fans? I just learned that word - it means someone who is an arrogant know-it-all while also being rather clueless at the same time. It fits, no?

Anyway, I'm pretty much listed, ranked and graded out by this point of the summer. In reality, I should just take these two weeks off from writing this column, as coming up with anything that hasn't already been talked about at this point is a rather futile exercise. If this feels like I'm vamping, you're not wrong.

Maybe the answer is to join the party and come up with a list of my own? Yeah, that's the ticket!

But alas, it's not going to be about the Packers, it's going to be about me.. I'm sure you've all wondered what I like to do for fun, hobbies, etc, right? right?

So, here they are, in no particular order (sorry rankings fans) and unrelated to the Green bay Packers.

~Hanging with my Grandkids - they are all 7 and younger so these are the best years before friends and activities will take them in other directions.

- Family parties - whether it's backyard pizza, barbecues or big fat Italian feasts where my wife makes way too much food, those are the days I live for.

~Gardening/Landscaping - Whether it's mowing the lawn, planting flowers, planting/trimming bushes or tending to my vegetable garden, it's a great way tor me to find serenity now! And get lost in my own thoughts, polluted or otherwise.

~Tennis - I took this up late in life. I've only been playing for about 12 years. I play with/against people who have played most of their lives, so I'd rate myself average.

~Pickleball - I took this up about 18 months ago and I'm probably already better at it than I am at tennis. Those college-age years, hanging in bars, playing ping pong for drinks ( I won a lot) has surely helped me with pickleball.

~Photography - I was never without a camera as a youth, which is why I have very few pictures of me with my friends - i was always the one taking the pictures. I even made my bathroom into a darkroom during college years. My love for photography has stayed with me in multiple forms.

-Reading - It's mostly the newspaper these days, and yes, I still get it delivered. I have a valid reason though. Between my job in I.T. and all this online Packers stuff I do, that's already way too much time in front of a screen every day. Plus, the morning paper over a cup of coffee still gives me the right feels.

-Biking - As a kid, I rode my bike everywhere I needed to go, every day. I don't get out on my mountain/street hybrid bike as much as I would like to, but I still love the feel of the wind in your face and thoroughly enjoy biking whenever I can.

-Wine Tasting - I'm not a big drinker, so it's not about that, but there is so much to know and learn and experience in the world of wine. I enjoy researching and learning the story behind a particular wine or winery as much as I do tasting the wine.

-Home Handyman - I'm very good around the house - basic plumbing,, carpentry, appliance repair and even painting (unlike most people, I actually enjoy it) Similar to gardening, you're in your own thoughts when painting, although I always need music playing. Which brings us to...

-Music - I've been to hundreds of concerts since the 70's and my musical taste is wide ranging. I've probably never gone a day without listening to music in some form, and nowadays spend time putting together Spotify playlists.

-Hiking, fishing, canoeing, bird watching - these are all things I used to do a lot that have fallen by the wayside a bit, but I've always loved anything to do with being out in nature. I'm hoping to get back to some of these things - there's still time!

Ok, so these are the things I like to do. But what about you? I'd love to hear what some of you readers do with your spare time. Let me know in the comments.

And sorry for the lack of Packers content today. I just didn't have it in me..,.

Go Pack Go!

Al no golf. Golf is the best way to get out and relax. It is one of the few things my wife and I enjoy doing together. I guess golf is not for everyone.

I read some of the rankings. Usually just to see what the person ranked and why. I like to read how they came up with their opinion. I like to analyze the analysis.

You got that right. I never cared for fishing. To me it is boring. If I am going to sit out in the woods or on a boat someplace I will just sit there and maybe read a book. With golfing I get to walk around and yell at the other golfers.

Totally agree. My brother on the other hand feels like if he does not fish every day, he feels like he is missing something. Total opposite of me. If I never fish again, that is fine with me.

I used to golf with a friend who was a landscaper. He said I had a great future in landscaping.

Golf takes too much time without enough physical benefit. Two hours of tennis is a better workout and leaves me free hours to pursue other interests.

Give it time Al. I played basketball and ran until I was around 60 because even though I played golf, I needed more physical activity than just golf. Now walking 18 holes is plenty of exercise for me (and basketball and running are a distant memory)......:)

Johnny Carson said that too, Al. He switched to tennis.

I used to love tennis and thought I would enjoy pickel ball.

I know I am in the minority but just do not see what all the hype is in pickle pall. Too old for tennis and will stick to my all time favorite--golf. Yes it takes about 4 hours for 18 holes but if you have the right guys to play with, time flies! I could spend a bit more time regarding hole 19.....

Most of my life I've enjoyed golfing, fishing, and snow skiing.

Someone once asked me, "Why those three?"

After thinking about it a minute it hit me - I'm a fan of pastoral settings. A verdant course, a calm, quiet lake, or a pristine alpine piste.

Surprised you didn't write something on the World Cup.
Like World Cup attendance numbers and
The simplicity of soccer vs the NFL.
After all the NFL is expanding into the world markets.
Soccer is getting a lot of press.

Man, I am so sick of the lists! I stopped reading those articles.

Young kids are fun. My nieces and nephews are all grown up now, but I have fond memories of playing with them when they were little.

My family is not Italian, but Italian feasts are our favorite meals. There is a lot of good Italian food in the area where I grew up. We know where to get the best Italian sausage, and it was a good day when my wife got my sister's recipe for stuffed shells.

I know nothing about wine (my favorite beverages are Mountain Dew and Tropical Punch Kool-Aid), but if you want to explore the realm where wine meets music, check out folk rocker Al Stewart's album Down In the Cellar. It's a concept album about wine, and it's very good! But then, I like pretty much everything Al Stewart has done, except for the inevitable dip in quality in the 1980s.

Al I forgot to comment about your newspaper comment. Yes I had a paper delivered for a long time. I did enjoy reading the paper on the bus on my way to work and on Sunday mornings and doing the crossword puzzles. I slowly decreased the days it was delivered due to the cost. Sometimes I do miss reading the newspaper but I have a funny feeling if I get the paper delivered again I will not read it and waste money.

"Sometimes I do miss reading the newspaper but I have a funny feeling if I get the paper delivered again I will not read it and waste money."

I don't know how old you are Cheez, I am 70. I wonder how many people go thru this same scenario. I bitched a lot when our local paper cut days but not cost. And threatened them if I didn't get the same deal new customers got that I would discontinue. Well they gave in and I got the deal. Fast forward to February 2026, my wife fell and shattered her right shoulder. weeks in the hospital and the newspapers piled up. I found that I really didn't need it anymore and will not renew the subscription.

Sports is the main news I seek, and I can read everything I need to know about the Packers, Hawkeyes, and Lakers on line. The only downside is sitting in front of the computer too much, but chair Tai Chi might just be the answer to stay active and lose the gut. Go Pack Go!!!!!!!!!!!

Too bad about your wife gp61. I read two newspapers online and will not go back to paper.

Do you still live in Iowa? Me? Iowa summers, Florida winters.

Yes, I'm an old dog. Just turned 74. Golden years? Not really!

I am an avid and lifelong golfer. In August I will be taking a bucket list trip to Ireland to play Royal Portrush and Royal County Down among other fabled Irish courses. Even though my game is slipping at age 75, I can't wait to play there!

I always used to love reading the paper newspaper, but after years of having to retrieve the paper from the foot of my driveway in icy, freezing winter months (I live in Wisconsin), I finally decided to give in and have it delivered electronically. Electronically delivered is a third of the cost of a paper newspaper and much more convenient. And the paper does a pretty good job of covering Packer news so my early mornings are split between the paper and CHTV to keep me up to date on my favorite sports team. Life is good.......

What I've discovered today is: we are all old.

I've also enjoyed learning more about several of our fellow CHTV posters.

To all our good health! Cheers!

Good idea LH.

I have golfed all my life and was decent at it. (played HS and college).

I have found that people who take up golf later in life love the game as much or more than those that have played all their lives. Good luck!

I like my summers. However I do miss football content for the moments when the body and heat require a retreat in doors and something that takes away from the complexities of life personally and wider societal issues. How dare the NFL have the temerity to take a vacation! However, it might be better if a lot of those who make a living off its back were required to as well. The amount of sheer rubbish out there this dead season is stupefying.

Go out, wreck your knees and stay buff Al, and take pride in not succumbing to the feeling that you need to polish the void that is football at this time of year. You can’t burnish nothing. In a few weeks we will start a season that might teach Ed Policy that or force me to accept that Murphy’s little emperor is wearing clothes after all. Well, perhaps after pads go on and contact starts.

Number 1 for me is spending time with my grandchildren. Number 2 is listening to music. 3 is reading, especially history and biographies. 4. Going to the theater and to opera. 5. Playing chess. 6. Light exercise, walking, strecthing, swimming.
7. Traveling, though not as much as in the past, since the grandchildren have arrived. 8. Home projects/repairs, 9. Following the NY Yankees. 10. Packer football.

Everyone stay well and enjoy your hobbies. Thanks, Since '61

I'm also a professional computer geek for my day job!

I'm an amateur strongman for my primary hobby. I lift giant boulders and pull trucks. Which is mentally irregular at any age, but extremely unusual for someone who turns 55 in October. Makes any high school reunions fun, though. Other guys talking about how strong they were "back in the day" while current day me could squash "back in the day" me like a bug.

I also enjoy reading (huge sci-fi/fantasy aficionado), computer games (RPG), and cheesy monster movies.
