Ask Maggie: I Was There
By MaggieLoney
The NFL Combine kicks off next week which always feels like the kickoff to a new NFL season. Shortly after, free agency begins, then we dive into draft prep and before you know it, the players are reporting to camp. But I’m getting ahead of myself. I hope you all enjoyed your mini “offseason” after the Super Bowl, because we’re back with plenty to talk about!
“Dang it! I forgot you were switching to Friday and missed submitting a question last week. Sorry! :) Wanted to ask, what’s your opinion on our “pending” free agents? Anyone you’d try to sign before the dreaded legal tampering period?” - Jim
Hey Jim! Happy you’re back. The unrestricted free agents this year are Quay Walker, Malik Willis, Sean Rhyan, Rasheed Walker, Romeo Doubs, J.J. Enagbare, John Fitzpatrick, and Nick Niemann.
John Fitzpatrick would’ve been an easy keep candidate for a low price and for depth in the room, but after suffering a torn achilles in December, that’s going to be a long road back. I love Romeo Doubs but it’s a crowded room and he’s going to find some good WR2 money on the open market, so he’s the furthest out the door at this point. Nick Niemann is a core special teamer when he’s healthy, so it’ll depend how much the new coordinator values him (more on that in a minute). Malik Willis is deservedly going to be a starter somewhere, so he’s out the door with Doubs.
That leaves Quay Walker, Rhyan, Rasheed Walker, and Enagbare. I don’t think this is going to be a hot take, but if I can only keep one of those guys I want Enagbare back. He’s never missed a game in his four-year career and his motor is always hot. If the Packers do move on from Rashan Gary this offseason, Enagbare would likely be one of the team’s starters when the season kicks off, opposite Lukas Van Ness. Micah Parsons is probably going to need a few weeks to ramp up (although it sounds like he’s crushing through his recovery). Regardless, I’m offering Enagbare a deal to stick around as my EDGE 3. I think the Packers draft a pass rusher in this draft, but I’m all for rewarding the homegrown talent and giving the former fifth-rounder a second contract in Green Bay. Spotrac estimates his value at roughly $6 million per year. I’d be comfortable with that. Gary is getting paid Quinnen Williams numbers. Certainly that money can be better-spent elsewhere.
I think Rasheed Walker is going to get overpaid in free agency because left tackles don’t grow on trees, and I don’t think the Packers should be in that conversation at all. Jordan Morgan was drafted to be the left tackle of the future, so do it. With Quay, I think it’ll depend on how Jonathan Gannon views his defense. I know teams are pretty scheme-versatile now and don’t run traditional 4-3 or 3-4 defenses out of base very often, but Gannon might look to utilize only two inside linebackers on the field at a time. Especially if he’s playing a lot of match quarters. I’d imagine Isaiah McDuffie will be Edgerrin Cooper’s running mate there, which makes Walker expendable. I think he falls into the Rasheed category, where he can find a larger contract on the open market.
And finally there’s Sean Rhyan, who I think has a realistic shot to come back, especially if the Packers need depth along the interior. We don’t know what’s going to happen with Elgton Jenkins, and if Walker is leaving at left tackle, that removes Morgan from a guard spot. Rhyan could realistically come back to play right guard, or be a backup interior lineman if he doesn’t win the center job outright.
There are a number of restricted free agents and exclusive rights free agents, but I’d expect the Packers to have interest in bringing quite a few of those guys back for depth. I’d be calling Kamal Hadden, Darrian Kinnard, Josh Whyle, and Brenton Cox. Jr. specifically, although Hadden will need to work his way back from the gruesome ankle injury first. I thought he had a nice preseason.
With the news that Bisaccia is stepping down breaking on Tuesday, that means the Packers will have a new special teams coordinator for 2026. Assuming they look externally and don’t promote Cory Harkey as the internal candidate (he’s been with the team for one season), that may impact which depth pieces the team wants to bring back, too. A lot of the RFAs/ERFAs play primarily on special teams. Zayne Anderson. Arron Mosby. Bo Melton. It’s possible the Packers will have a new approach to building the back end of their roster/special teams squad, but that seems unlikely.
Phew. That was a long one. But to concisely answer your question, I’d sign Enagbare before free agency starts and I’d make Rhyan an offer but let him test the market, knowing he might not be a starter in Green Bay come Week 1.
“I am not feeling excited for the draft this year (no 1st round pick, not in Green Bay). What off-season events do you look forward to the most?” - Tony
I’ve always loved the draft, so that’s definitely my favorite off-season event. Free agency is fun because it shakes up the NFL, but I like the injection of new talent that the draft brings. The draft brings you at least a handful of new prospects that’ll compete for roster spots. And some of those depth pieces end up needing to fill in right away. So I always find that interesting.
I know the mock drafts can get annoying for people who don’t follow the draft closely, so I try not to do too many of them, but it’s one of my favorite Pack’s What She Said episodes every year with Perri. There’s always a list of players I really love that I don’t think Green Bay would go for, so it’s fun to follow their careers and see how they pan out in the NFL. This is especially true of late-round picks. Romeo Doubs and Kitan Oladapo were a few of the late-round picks I’ve gotten right over the last few seasons.
The first round typically feels pretty established, so I’m not as into night one, which works this year since the Packers don’t have a first-round selection. We may not know where the players are going, but we normally know about 25 names that will be called. That’s why I like the surprise of night two. Seeing who slides. Seeing if there’s a run on a specific position.
I’ve always liked night two the best, personally. But the Packers are going to need to nail it this year with only two picks inside the top-100. The consensus no matter where you look around the league seems to be that Green Bay’s two biggest needs are nose tackle and cornerback, which is what I’d see them doing on night two, too. That’s what makes the draft fun, though! It’ll probably end up being an edge rusher and a center.
Outside of the draft, I think training camp is a blast. If anyone is looking for a fun weekend trip, Green Bay never disappoints. Take the stadium tour. Visit the Hall of Fame. Go to some of the amazing restaurants and breweries in the area. And take in a Packers practice while you’re there. It’s the best. Players riding bikes to practice is a tradition that’ll never get old. My kids aren’t old enough to do the bikes, but we may attempt Family Night this year. We’ll see.
“We know from your all time Packer team that you have an affinity for Jerry Kramer. I just saw the he is going to be signing his book at the Packer Pro Shop on February 23rd. Are you going to be there?” - Tony
Tony with the doubleheader this week. I would have loved to go, but no, I won’t be there. I had the privilege of meeting Jerry at a card shop in Milwaukee prior to his induction into the Hall of Fame. He’s every bit as charming and personable as you’d expect him to be. I think he’s always just been so easy to root for, especially following his Hall of Fame candidacy, knowing how long it took him to finally get inducted. I made the trip to Canton to watch his induction in person. It was such a fun weekend to tour the Hall of Fame and appreciate the NFL’s rich history. I mentioned it in the comments section last week, but I stumbled across a signed copy of “Instant Replay” at a used book store, so that was a necessary addition to my Packers collection, too. I just have a soft spot for the 60s Packers, which I’m sure a lot of people do. Having grown up with the Rodgers-led Packers, guys like Jerry Kramer, Bart Starr, and Dave Robinson helped me grow a deeper appreciation for the football team I love so much. Does anyone remember the videoboard commercial for Johnsonville from a few years ago at Lambeau Field with Jerry where he mentioned a bunch of memorable moments and then ended it with “Today could be one of those days when you get to say, yeah, I was here.” Chills. Every time.
Who’s your favorite Packer and why? Let me know in the comments. And don’t forget to send your questions for next week’s mailbag to [email protected].

It’ll probably end up being an edge rusher and a center.
Such a great vote of confidence for the Gute Loyalist.
1. Enagbare is a over achiever.
2. Status Que vs Parsons.?
Try two 3 rd comps for Willis and Doubs.
The draft can fix the OL.
The defensive Line is another matter.
And as we've seen.
Drafted CBs aren't a given success.

An NFL team can receive a maximum of four standard compensatory picks per draft for losing free agents, but
there is no specific limit on how many of those can be 3rd-rounders, as it depends on the contract value of the players lost. Additionally, teams can receive separate, special 3rd-round picks for losing minority coaches or executives.

Yeah Stock, if it was me I would try to take DT out of "Biggest Draft Needs" by signing a FA DT, or trade a 5th or 6th for D'Vondre Sweat if he is available. With that hole filled we could concentrate on CB, OL, Edge.
Any FAs we sign have to be budget, I would also sign a vet TE, CB(maybe 2 if between $2-5 million) a LB to replace Quay(No faith in Hopper), and a KR/WR

Just remember - I wanted Jihad Campbell.
And before that it was Dejean.

Mock drafts consistently show that GB does better by getting a C in FA and drafting DT in the second round.

I agree with almost all of this. My belief is that Rhyan is a slight priority over Enegbare but both are the top two. This might be where the Packers offer both a contract and see who they can work with.
Walker, Willis, Walker, Doubs, and Jenkins are all gone.
I will also say Gary is gone but I am hoping we can trade him.
I will admit I am bias towards Fitzpatrick because TE is my favorite position and he is the type of TE I like. He is tall, big and can block. The Packers will offer him a one or two year small value deal and he will probably take it as most teams will be leery of signing him coming off the injury. I agree about Niemann.
I do not get into the RFAs and ERFAs as that involves tenders and most teams do try to keep them. Kinnard, Whyle, Cox, and Melton being the most important. But they will probably bring most of them back.

odds
The first round gives you a 63% chance of finding a starter. The second round gives you a 27% chance, the third a 17% chance, then it really plummets from there with 8% in the fourth and 6% in the 7th.

So what does this have to do with my comment? You just proved your statement about the OL as being not plausible.

Lol he thinks a rookie CB isn't reliable but rookie O linemen will fix everything. He didn't even have the decency to turn it into a Haiku.

I think the Packers will decline most of those tenders simply because they can't commit to $3.5M each. They can not offer the tender and then resign at a number closer to their true value.

I could make an argument for tendering Wilson and Cox, based on performance and upside respectively. I essentially don’t worry if we have to start Wilson. I think Cox might be the biggest threat to the QB per snap other than Parsons.
I’d prefer we sign them to 2 or 3 year deals without future guarantees though (as you have previously suggested for Cox). Of the rest of the RFAs, I agree: I think we can get them for less or get equally viable prospects. None have flashed elite play or production.

Fitz is likely gone because of the torn Achilles. Hadden too because of the ankle.
I would try to sign Charlie Kolar-TE-Ravens, he is a great blocker and way underrated receiver.

I wouldn't be too confident that #7 won't be back, our FO likes him. I just hope they don't overpay. And he is obviously NOT a Mike.
Fitzpatrick isn't a very good blocking TE. His injury as well as Zach Tom's are not a given that they can recover 100%.

I lean more toward keeping Rhyan over Enagbare, because Rhyan was a starter last year, and he can play either center or guard. The roster is very thin at both those positions. At DE, on the other hand, we have Parsons and Van Ness as the starters, and Cox and Sorrell as backups, plus Collin Oliver in the mix.
Enagbare is a solid backup, though, so I'm not against keeping him if the price is right. So far he is way down the list of NFL free agents. Acmepackingcompany.com did a consensus ranking and had him at #162, so he probably would not be expensive to keep.
There's no mention here of Emmanuel Wilson as a restricted free agent. Is it assumed that the Packers won't offer him a tender, or if they do, that he'll get a better offer from another team? I'm not so sure of that. I think the Packers would be wise to try to keep him, and he may not be too expensive. Marshawn Lloyd can't be counted on at all, and Chris Brooks is essentially just a fullback.

I agree that we should try to keep Wilson. I also agree that, much as I liked Lloyd, counting on him is ridiculous at this point.
I would only consider keeping Enagbare if we move on from Gary. We can’t have 3 non threats to the QB (Gary/LVN/Enagbare behind Parsons. We need to open space for Sorrell to get more opportunities and I would keep Cox too. Cox would be my priority to resign in that room if we can. He’s flashed and he plays the run well. Parsons, LVN, Sorrell and Cox plus Oliver as a designated rusher would seem like a more balanced core to add to in the draft.
Rhyan comes down to cost. If it’s reasonable, keep him. At worst he’s a serviceable back up at G and C. If he were to be priced out, then it depends on what they really think of Monk, who actually played well against the Vikings. If they like Monk and can’t get Rhyan, I’d bring back Lecitus Smith (who also held up pretty well at LG versus the Vikings) as cover depth at G/C and draft a center prospect to develop.
I’d love us to draft/sign a true fullback/lead blocker. I have little doubt that they won’t though. I’d love a true blocking TE too, but I’m no more optimistic.

I'm assuming Rashan Gary will be gone. I forgot about Cox being a restricted free agent. He was undrafted, and he only had a three-year contract. Yes, they should definitely make him an offer.
I haven't given up on LVN as a pass rusher. He improved last year, and maybe he can take advantage of playing opposite Micah Parsons.

"Cox would be my priority to resign in that room if we can."
My thinking would be to try to get him on a two-year deal (bypass the RFA tender) and see if they can keep his cap hit below the tender for '26. He's got to stay healthy.

Enegbare brings so little other than being available and if he is projected to get $6 million, that is an overpay for little production. Losing Gary will not only open cap space, but also badly needed reps for the other guys. I don't know how many Edge rushers we need to carry, but A J Epenesa-Bills is a FA projected to get $4 million per year, and he is twice the player Enegbare is. What do you think of him Cold?
Coldworld
February 21, 2026 at 07:41 am
He’s a better fit for what we have than Enagbare. He’s had a few injuries but he’s put up a couple of 6 sack seasons. I’d probably take Enagbare in a run heavy game, but generally I think A J Epenesa would be an upgrade for us.
He’d arguably be our second most threatening pass rusher based upon seasons past if Gary has gone. I’d say he’d be a good number 3/4 option and, if you are right about price, a good pick up to take some pressure off Sorrell and (hopefully) Cox.

I like Epanesa as a signing if he doesn't get bid up too much. Sportrac says Epanesa gets about $6.5M AAV, so I'd expect they could keep his cap hit bewteen $3-4M in '26. He's been mostly available and a more productive pass-rusher than Enagbare. His snaps fell off some in '26, but I suspect it's because the Bills brought in Bosa.

Wilson is a proven backup, when called upon he can handle 25 carries, give you 100 yards, move the chains on third/4th and short and get in the end zone in the red zone. In addition his blocking and pass catching has improved each year. He gives the offense a confidence level if Jacobs can't go, find a way to keep him.
golfpacker61
February 20, 2026 at 01:40 pm
If we could save more than $8 million by cutting Jacobs, I would keep Wilson and see what our 2 practice squad RBs could do. Martinez and Strong were both really good college backs, the fact that they were drafted says something about them. Strong is also a KR. Wilson & Brooks were basically unknowns for us, give the new guys a chance.
I am disappointed in Marshawn Lloyd's never getting on the field. I think GB saw him as a Jacobs replacement after 2-3 years, but this realistically is Lloyds last chance to stay a Packer.
SicSemperTyrannis

Both Chris Brooks and Emanuel Wilson should be kept. As long as we keep #8 this is a GREAT RB room! Which makes our O line top priority to fix.

February 20, 2026 at 01:16 pm
Rhyan a big yes. It's not easy to find OL that excel at both run & pass blocking, and Rhyan is no exception. Better run blocker for sure. The fact that he plays OG too is what makes this easy if the center part doesn't price him out of GB.
Enegbare is a big No. The only thing he brings to the table is availability, which doesn't mean as much if you don't contribute much while playing. For the projected $6 million annually I would spend than on A J Epenesa-Buffalo, who has played just as much and who's stats are way better. It's not even close.
Quay Walker-No-too many warts in his game. We can find the same @ 1/2 the price-Leo Chenel
Willis, Doubs, R Walker will all get huge paydays that GB can't match. The salary cap works in the NFL, you lose good players every year. Bill Belichick lived by the motto" It's better to lose them a year early rather than a year too late." It's so true and I wish Gutey would read up on it.
Cox, Whyle, & Kinnard are no-brainers. There are 50 other Kamal Haddens available.
We need to sign about 5 outside FAs this year: DT, TE, KR, ILB, CB
and Efge-Epenesa if we can-projected $4.5 million per
Big draft needed-CB has to be the first pick, between #52 and up to #72 after tradeback
The obvious Jenkins & Gary gone. Maybe trade Musgrave.(Sweat)?

I just saw where the Cowboys released Logan Wilson LB. He was drafted with the first pick in the 3rd round 2020 draft. He was beat out for a starting LB spot in Cinn in 2025 and was later traded to Dallas for a 7th round pick. Wilson averaged 120 tackles per year for 4 years strait for the Bengals and had 11 Ints. He is as good a run defender as Walker, but an upgrade in pass coverage. Could be a really cheap replacement for Quay and a slight upgrade, maybe $2-4 million annually.
Coldworld
February 21, 2026 at 07:53 am
At 29 he’d be a holding type acquisition. He obviously wasn’t someone the new Bengals DC favored, and there was some suggestion that he had lost a step. However, his play wasn’t obviously bad. He didn’t play all that much in Dallas and looks like he was always a rental. Cutting him to save 6.5 million in cap therefore makes sense. At a lesser price, I’d consider him if we let Quay go, but as a short term starter/veteran depth.
