Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Nothing is Easy

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Why must they torture us? - What is it about the Packers the last few years that they continually find ways to make what should be "easy" wins really hard?  I know, nothing is easy in the NFL - but all winning teams usually pop out a laugher now and then. Not the Packers.

The Belichick factor - Of course, in this game, we have to acknowledge that the Packers were up against the greatest football coach since Vince Lombardi. He has regularly found ways to win when the odds were stacked against his team, like last January when he had his offense run 46 times with only 3 passes to beat the Buffalo Bills.

Shades of MM - Did you hear Rodgers in his post-game presser? He answered one question by starting out with, "I've been a great player for a long time..." Yes. he's been a "highly successful" football player in this league.

Tonyan worries - Look, I know he's coming back from an ACL and we need to be patient, but thus far, Tonyan has shown little burst in anything other than a straight-line seam route. He's been slow coming out of breaks while getting absolutely no YAC and getting brought down really easily. It's not Richard Rodgers level bad, but he's not avoiding or breaking any tackles with the ball in his hands. It hasn't looked pretty - but I am not panicking yet.

What's the Story Barry? - Call me crazy, call me polluted, but if it's me, I come into this game knowing the Patriots have to run the ball, and then when I'm presented with a third-string QB gift seeing his first action, I'm stacking the box. Then, if it's not a run, I'm throwing the kitchen sink at Zappe and make him want to go home to Mommy. But that's just me.

Davis Webb - The Packers may very well be facing another third-string QB this week in London. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Kicking it Off - Speaking of worries, I continue to be concerned about Crosby's inability to get the ball into the end zone on kickoffs. That's just giving opponents a lot of opportunities to catch the Packers in a coverage mistake and make them pay. The Patriots returned four kickoffs for an average of 28 yards and a long of 37 yards. Only one kickoff resulted in a touchback - I'd love to get that touchback average up higher than 20% - even 50% would be great.

Consistently inconsistent - I still remain convinced that if the Packers can just achieve some level of consistency on both sides of the ball, they are strong Super Bowl contenders. But don't go bet the house on my opinion.

This is your punt coverage with Rudy Ford:

This is your punt coverage without Rudy Ford:

Any Questions? Once Adrian Amos got injured and was confirmed to be out for the game, the Packers pulled Ford from punt coverage to reduce the chance that they lose another safety to injury. The results were predictable. On the next two punts that were returned (a third went out of bounds) The Patriots got a total of 49 yards of free field position. The Packers did learn their lesson, bringing Ford back in for the final punt with two minutes left in the game - that's the one shown in the first video above. In the second video, it's Shemar Jean-Charles getting blocked out of bounds and then again, blocked to the ground behind the returner. Sub-optimal. In all, Ford recorded only 9 special teams snaps. For comparison, he had 17 ST snaps in the Bucs game.

Well, Al, regarding "Shades of MM" I have 2 observation. I placed post that father time catch Aaron Rodgers. He has in the past from time to time once a while off pass, but in the 1st half of the Cheatriots game he had 4 - one was pick six. Second observation is that he is not enjoying in football any more, at least not at the level he did in the past. You can say that by his reactions after good or bad outcome of the play. Is that the problem because many teams playing vs Aaron Rodgers under the QB playing Tampa 2, that he is "robbed" of his most enjoyable (for him) deep passes or there is something else, I do not know.

Maybe things will turn around and we will see Aaron Rodgers again in the game completely in. I do not know. But from the end of the last season he does not look as completely concentrated to the game. Maybe it is me, making wrong judgement, or I do not know what it is. It also may be some locker room friction, who knows...

I don’t think Arod is any different other than he has more of his faces because he’s dealing with young WR’s not running the exact routes he expects, fumbling/dropping/losing them in mid-air passes. Regarding 2 deep safeties, that is the defense most teams are playing throughout the league. Rodgers isn’t the only one dealing with having to dink and dunk. It’s frustrating for a QB, but that’s the NFL today. I think as our Rookie WR’s keep getting better, Watkins comes back and if they add someone like OBJ it will come together as we progress thru the year.

One writer said last week that two high safeties were making the league boring. Like it was a brand new defense or something. Wonder what he would've thought of the early 70's NFL?

You are correct, but, to be honest do not use a lot of Google translate, when you are translating Croatia language. Every language has it own difficulties, but Slavic languages are pretty hard to translate.

I understood what Coldworld wanted to say and it is OK. I'm old enough to know what I do not know or what I'm not as good as I want to be.

However, thanks you all for your support on this page.

I'm VERY concerned about Tonyan. On those little swing passes, he'll catch the ball, turn up field, and when he starts to run it looks like he's running in 7 inches of mud! There's no burst, NOTHING. Not to mention he's pretty easy to tackle right now as Al mentioned.

On Sunday the Packers are playing another team with a limited WR Corps. Golladay has been a complete bust as a FA. Shepard is out for the year. Even if Daniel Jones plays on one leg, or Davis Webb suits up, this is a team that is built around Barkley. MAKE the QB beat you. Trust Rasol and Stokes to be able to win their match-ups and STOP Barkley. I swear if Barkley runs for 170 yards and there are 2 safeties back the entire game...AGAIN, then Barry should be left IN London. This is a game I'm actually concerned about. It may be 2:30 PM at KO in London, but it's 8:30 AM for EVERY Packer player and coach. That's pretty damn early for Football. The only thing that makes me a little happier is it's 7:30 AM for the Giants!! Well that and by about 9:30 AM on Sunday (Pacific Time), I'll have the WHOLE day to do other things after watching the Packers hopefully win.

Sorry you have it backwards. No big deal. 9:30 ET, 8:30 CT 7:30 MT 6:30 PT. I think it's hard for them to get used to starting at noon when almost all their games lately have been late or prime time. Doing Thursdays or London is a nightmare. Good thing they're young.

In all honesty the Packers should have left for London on Monday. That would have given their bodies enough time to adjust to the time change. Rule of thumb when going across time zones is it take 1 day per hour time change for the body to get adjusted to the new time. That means it will take ~6 days to adjust to London time. Instead they take a flight on Thursday and arrive Friday morning. Overall they will have only 1-2 days to adjust to the different in time.

Jet lag for me is much worse going over.

A key tactic is staying up all day after you land. I made the mistake once of taking a 3 hour nap before my business meeting after landing at Heathrow. The next 4 days were complete insomnia hell. Just terrible.

Flying back was a breeze. No jet lag at all.

Overnight flights are the key for Western Europe. Then a goid breakfast and, as you say, keep going all day. For sports, the challenge is hydration, but they’ve got enough experts and resources to replenish, or should have.

I know Jarie out, but come on, play man more we have the inside linebackers now, and with Clark and Gary, just create havoc . Torture - It would have been torture if they lost!! But let’s not forget. In 2010 we were 10 -6!
Belichick - Double team Clark! And see who steps up.
Shades of MM- It’s a state of mind thing. As long as he’s are qb. He’s not blowing smoke up are ass.
Tonyan worries- The TE position needs more support!
The Barry Story- Injuries. Finding the right replacements. And confidence. Walker is improving.
kicking-Crosby doesn’t have the leg anymore. Wishing and keeping your fingers crossed won’t change that.
Consistency- Tom Brady has had his problems with new WRs too. And is the defense following the footsteps of Kevin King ?
Ford is playing his way to a bigger roll.
My virgin ears- Rodgers 4 letter word to hike the ball was priceless!

Why must they torture us? -
I do think something Rodgers said yesterday is very accurate. That GB is always going to get everyones best shot. Also how many blow out losses has Belichek had under his belt?
While we went to OT and my blood pressure was very high, these types of games can be very good for the team. A team full of young players.

The Belichick factor -
He simply is the best coach in football. There are some very good ones, but he is the best.

Shades of MM -
I mean neither were wrong.

Tonyan worries -
I think its something that will take time for him to regain the explosiveness. Hopefully each week he starts to trust his knee more and each week he can keep producing.

What's the Story Barry? -
I don't get what they were trying to do. It sounded like LaFleur felt the same way too. That they were playing way to soft yet again. I don't get when they have a 3rd string QB and they know the other team was going to run, why they didn't load the box to stop the run. I just don't get the philosophy.

Davis Webb -
Regardless of who the QB is, expect a lot of running with Barkley. Hopefully they start defending the run better!

Kicking it Off -
I don't think Crosby has the leg to routinely get the ball into the endzone. That being said, his FG's have been perfectly straight. His kicks have been looking so damn good. I'm not worried about kickoffs.

Consistently inconsistent -
There are a lot of young talented players on this team. Once some of them start figuring things out they will gain the consistency we want to see.

This is your punt coverage with Rudy Ford:
Ford has been a huge asset as a returner. I am sure he wants to play on defense and he did really well actually. But, we need him on special teams. He is such a good gunner. Best we have had since Janis.

RC, read my detailed description below and tell me why you think Barry didn’t load the box. He played 3DL in almost every situation and frequently played 8 men box with a safety.

I'd like to see the Packers' blitz rate under Barry. I suspect it's very low. I think that's the one thing I would've added on Sunday, and I hope the Packers hammer the A-gaps against the Giants, no matter who the QB is.

There was an article in the Athletic yesterday that said the Packers had one of the highest blitz rates in the league. That shocked me to say the least because if true they are terrible at it.
I am fully not on the Barry train. All offseason and this year so far I keep reading the Packers are now a run and defense team. We just need time to develop. Well guess who is already that team. The 49ers. After watching them beat up the Rams on Monday night it is so apparent that a Joe Barry defense will never perform like that. His scheme takes aggression away. Yesterday on his podcast Andy Herman said our defense needs to get violent at the point of attack. That is not coming under Barry. He would rather coach so that his scheme doesn't make a mistake than let his players take it to the opposition.
Joe Barry has a proven track record....and it isn't very good. I am one of the most positive fans out there but I just dont see the Packers beating the 49ers in the playoffs. A close game for sure but they are not going to become a great defense in the next 3 or 4 months. Truly a terrible hire in my opinion.

They need to be more creative in their blitzing (saving it for big games ? ). All I see is Walker up the middle with little results. The D line play is also weak at times. They seem to pick sides or get driven back instead of holding their ground allowing the backers to clean up. I counted on Wyatt chipping in more than he has so far.

PFF is screwy with how they count blitzing. If it's a 5 man line and they send 5 they call it a blitz. Fennell talked about it a couple days ago.

Tonyan may improve. It’s not rational to expect players coming off ACLs to be as explosive for months. It is the norm not the exception. He’s one non rookie that may be much better by late season. The same is true of Jenkins. That’s why I don’t set much hope of Hill being a factor this year if needed. It’s also why I don’t pay much attention to the calls for OBJ.

Your point about OBJ is right on. He might not be as explosive. My call on that is the team should evaluate before contracting him. I'd think you agree all players have different time frames and speed of getting back to normal or close to. If the packers think he is back to a high level and he is willing to sign for a reasonable rate for the remainder of the year I believe it's worth the risk. That doesn't mean they do that now, but possibly weeks down the road.

My hunch pre season was this would be Rodgers worst year of his career. So far I'm right on. I based on him being more concerned about his passer rating and per completion then trying to win. He almost ignores our newbies because he doesnt think they can catch footballs.
Thus, problem 1, were only using a handful of people in the offense.
2. We drafted a number one pick who cant make the field. OUr number three pick cant hold on to footballs. Our first round pick Stokes still looks lost and is not a cover corner by any strech. Amos is hurt gain, Jairre is hurt again and we still have a raft of old war horse tight ends who werent that great when they were young.
Bottom line this aint a talented team. Lucky were playing crippled teams and poor teams right now. The one good team we played kicked out ass. Time to accept that and quit wondering whats wrong

Al, Since while watching live I felt I’d give the coaches a disservice of an opinion, yesterday I mapped out every defensive play by using All-22, I think Barry needs some defending from the thoughts he doesn’t stack the box or make adjustments.

Of course, any of us might have a different definition of a light vs heavy box. In this description, I don’t include a pressing CB as in the Box, but I do include the safety within 5 yards of the LOS. Obviously, the CB is there to cover the WR.

Also, I’m using 6 men as light (2DL), 7 men- Base (3DL) and 8 men as very aggressive basically heavy while playing Cover 1, meaning only 1 safety back.

There were 55 defensive plays, not including the 4th down punts.
15 - 6 Men or light
29 - 7 men or base ( a few times they played cover 1 with 2DL and safety in the box.
15 - 8 men or heavy

Of course, there is more to it than just that. When playing light what was the situation. IE: if it is an obvious passing situation, you play coverage or light in the box to cover 4 wide, which NE played a lot of to spread GB out. So, taking out all of the obvious passing situations from the light box we have 5 plays that I’ll call Barry playing light box. Below are the results of the light box.
4th series - 3rd and 2. Run for a 1st down
6th series - 1st & 10 on GB 22yd line. Sack fumble GB recovers (blitz)
7th series - 2nd & 5on GB 31 yd line. Run for 1st down
8th series - this is a NE TD . 1st & 10 on NE 34 yd line. 13 yd run ( from this point on in this drive he played 3DL and He played 8M twice, once as Cover 1 and was burned for a 24 yd pass that set up the TD) This was to counter Belichick using a 6th blocking OL and only 2W. Where most of the game he was 3 or 4 W to keep the Packers from always loading the box.
10th series and last in regulation - 3rd and 3 from GB 9 yd line they ran and GB held them short.

In the OT, Barry loaded up the box with 8 men on 1st and 10 and 2nd & 5, then on 3rd and 6 he lined up 6Men and blitzed with pressure coverage.

On a big picture viewpoint. My thoughts are Barry made adjustments and played a heavy box frequently during the game. Two of the biggest plays for NE is when Barry became very aggressive with 8 men box, playing cover 1. Also, some of the biggest plays is when he went light with 6 men box, 2 DL and applied or showed pressure.

You can draw your own conclusion, but saying he didn’t play a heavy box is just incorrect and unfair to Barry. Lastly, one of the better defenses last year was Buffalo and as you stated above Al, Buffalo couldn’t stop NE from running the ball for a whole game. Sometimes its the players, not the coaches and the other team is also good.

I think we underestimate that RB tandem and how BB uses his TEs (sometimes extra OLBs) to aid it. It’s really a consistent and core part of their game. I’ve suggested that we do some of the same with Tom in the past. Bellicheck had a plan and it worked to get the most out of a very limited set of options. If LaFleur could do that we would be a lot better on O.

This year, BB doesn't seem to use two RB sets very often. I agree using a two TE set with one RB might be more effective. For the Packers, he pony set hasn't shown to work that great so far.

Coldworld's picture

When we use the pony, the best results have had Dillon as a TE/FB effectively. Is that through choice though? Most saw 3 back sets as more than just asking a D to guard one runner or the other. I think we thought that the premise was to run passing plays as well. In fact we have only done so very rarely. That could be deliberate withholding, but with our struggles on O, perhaps that’s not true.

One thing I’ve noticed is that the pony seems to severely limit our receiving routes. As used, it seems the WRs are there only premised on the hope that a team sells out on the run or to block (mostly). Jones is better than that: we should be able to integrate him with more complex receiver patterns. As used thus far, I am not surprised that it’s not been effective.

BB uses a TE on most downs, often 2. I’m not sure that he used 2 RBs much either. His TEs are a key part of his run scheme, perhaps now more than his passing game, from what I’ve seen this year.

NE played 1.0 RBs per play per the NFL. Probably had an empty set a time or two and then 2 RBs in the backfield to compensate.

I commend you for taking the time to do all that work, but I have to disagree overall, I too re-watched the game when the All-22 came out to specifically watch the secondary. There were many times when the Packers disguised the two-man shell pre-snap and then dropped back into it. LaFleur was unhappy with the approach and said on Monday that they need to be more aggressive and realize when they need to come out of the two-shell, specifically when they are pretty sure the opponent is going to run the ball. In the second half, the Patriots threw a total of four passes and too many times they still dropped into two-shell.

I won’t argue with more aggression and I was concentrating on how many DL they played each down. The certainly didn’t go light much except on obvious passing downs.

A minor rebuttal from me. One, in the world of sports premadonna’s Aaron Rodgers is not one of them. Every single thing he says is parsed and dissected. And often what he says is true.

Two, all defensive coordinators are going to the defense that Barry runs. Should he adjust? Yes, but with the backups playing DB’s that could create larger problems.

Third, maybe we are expecting too much from players returning from major surgeries.

Fourth, the receivers are young and inexperienced. But they have potential and are coming along.

Last, we have new coaches and are feeling their way and the results will be inconsistent..

Given the above, of course they will struggle. Yet I expect that the team will grow as the season goes along.

Not all defenses have the players the Packers have. Teams are going to this defense cuz they dont have the players to stop modern offenses without it. Packers dont have to but they do it anyways. Absolutely cowardice. Barry is coaching out of fear rather than confidence or aggression. Hes playing not to lose and thats exactly how you lose.

Another good piece Al, and thanks for the clips on the punt coverage. Ford has been a big help though others need to make plays. This is the 4th season for LaFleur, and its time he makes adjustments. Packers need to start out fast for once and get a good lead. They seem to play to the level of the opponent, and they left many points out there against the Patriots. This is such a league of parity now and a couple of plays makes the difference between a win or loss. On paper, the roster looks solid. Let's hope the coaches can call schemes to utilize those players best abilities.

As far as Rodgers goes, it seems there is a disconnect between the coach and QB. Thus, the tendency to throw long passes on first down that never, ever connect. What to do about it? Grit your teeth and put up with it. As far as Tonyan is concerned, he's coming back from a knee injury, and is playing a position that requires him to put a lot of pressure on that knee to be successful. It seems he's heading toward another "prove it" year next year, when the knee, and Tonyan's confidence in it, should be back. Finally, the defense was being praised all off-season as being the greatest thing since sliced bread. Yet, they show some maddening tendencies. Like allowing Jefferson to be uncovered for much of the first game. And the puzzling decisions either not focus on shutting down the run, or the defense being unable to stop the run. Is it time to pay for a first-rate defensive coach? Or was the defense simply overhyped?

the maddening tendencies are, at least to me, the fault of a very mediocre coach, Barry, on defense, and I'm not so sure MLF isn't mediocre himself...hasnt seemed to grow much as an innovative young coach the last couple of years...makes the same type excuses as McCarthy used to make just different word other than "pad level"..

Lafleur's hands are tied. Hes as creative of a coach as there is in football but this isnt his offense. Its Rodgers' offense. Murphy made sure of that when he capitulated to Rodgers the last 2 offseasons. Rodgers has been fighting for control over this offense since the Mccarthy days. He ran Mccarthy out of town then publicly bitched and moaned about Lafleur's offense before Lafleur even coached his 1st game in Green Bay. People just dont want to come to the realization that the center of the Green Bay universe over the last 15 years turned out to be the kind of guy they would absolutely despise if he played for any other team.

Then he should have shut up about his desire for Rodgers return. He could also have walked. In the end, there are no free rides. If LaFleur believed in himself and believed he can’t do what he needs to then he had to stand up for that. Acquiesce makes him just as responsible as if he sought it out.

Directly to the center of the target, Coldworld.

You and me agreed long time ago that MLF looks like he does not have the b*lls to be HC. If MLF is sure in himself, than he should be firm up to losing his job. After 3 years of success he would be quickly back to be HC for another franchise.

But, in that case he would expose the main culprit for all those lack of success Packers shows through the play-offs. And the arrow is pointing to Murphy. I wonder if he would survive that, or he will be send to pension a little bit earlier than he expected.

But you can not ask that kind of action from the guys who is afraid of his own shadow...

"Finally, the defense was being praised all off-season as being the greatest thing since sliced bread. Yet, they show some maddening tendencies."

I think it was a huge overreaction to the SF playoff game. What's never mentioned are the horrible weather conditions that game was played under:

"Temperatures are expected to dip into the teens well before the NFC divisional game kicks off at 7:15 p.m. at Lambeau Field, with wind chills near zero, according to Scott Berschback, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Green Bay.
Daytime temperatures, with highs expected to be in the lower 20s, will be accompanied by winds from the west between 10 and 20 mph throughout the day. By the evening, the temperatures will drop into the lower teens, with winds from the northwest around the same speed and the occasional 20 mph gusts. "

That weather, more than any great defensive effort, held both offenses below what would have been expected otherwise. And I fear many got a false sense of security about the defense as a result.

Dont forget Jimmy G was playing with 2 bad injuries to his throwing arm and hand. But even with that said, you cant ignore the game Gary had. Hes an absolute game wrecker and that was going against Trent Williams, who some declared the best player in football. It wasnt all because of the weather. The defense is stacked with really good playera but theyre consistently being put in a position to fail. You play cover 2 when you dont have guys who can cover. This team has that. Why pay Jaire Alexander 28 mil per year to do a job a 3rd round rookie can do? Makes no sense. Its like Mike Pettine never left.

I noticed the impact of the absence of Ford too. On the other hand it was a big plus seeing him fare pretty well on D in relief of Amos, probably a bigger one. Perhaps the new ILB will help ST depth too.

As far as I’m concerned, the D isn’t perfect. BB gave our ILBs fits. He’s very good at that (he also tends to have very good STs). However, I don’t see the D or Barry as a dumpster fire as some do. I do think that they are short a true run stuffer on the DL. Reed is better disrupting (and had a good game), so is Slaton. The other piece is Lowry, who is and always has been a liability in the run game. That’s not a balanced make up. I’d really like to see Hefflin promoted to take snaps from Lowry against run focused teams.

On O we are at war with our own roster. Lazard is a good piece, Cobb contributes as long as we don’t over use him, but the play making talent resides primarily with rookies. That was never an obviously great combination with Rodgers or LaFleur, but it seems that the chosen approach is to just continue as before. That’s not going to work.

The Watkins gamble is on hold, and his history suggests it may be over in meaningful terms. Doubs’ use is sporadic. In reality you want to get receivers involved and keep them involved, particularly rookies. Watson is 50 yards or a gadget and Toure isn’t even seeing the field. We seldom have more than one source of speed or explosion on the field and more than 29 yards from the line of scrimmage.

To compound that, most of the passes and routes (importantly) occupy the short field that our RBs cause to be crowded. This puts more pressure on our O line, makes it harder to get players open and fails to capitalize on Jones. When we do try to break out it’s often to Cobb and Lazard. Cobb is great at finding space, but he’s not fast and neither Is Lazard. Also, neither are going to be getting a lot better from playing time. They are now what they will be in December if healthy.

We saw what Love could do with Doubs and Toure in preseason and the routes they ran. It’s pretty ridiculous to think Rodgers couldn’t do as much and more. I find it interesting that no one has noted that Watson caught a 24 yarder in 5 (?) passes thrown by Love, but has had no similar route or target since. Instead we see actual or near handoffs or flat throws for the vast majority of the time. We’ve seen very few mid level routes called. We trot out 2 RBs, but their targeting in the passing game is limited. We don’t run plays that put speed on The field in multiple locations and don’t pair it up to stress Ds.

In short we aren’t using our potential difference makers and we aren’t trying to put them in the positions that have the greatest chance of success typically given the defenses we’ve faced. We are playing to our opponents not trying to play to our upside and we aren’t doing much to accelerate learning. This O is not talented enough to use Doubs, Watson and Toure this way and expect to contend. Lazard and Cobb aren’t, and never were, going to carry this O to a Super Bowl, even if Jones stayed healthy.

I was waiting to see how LaFleur approached this season with the roster we have. It was a chance in my view to show that, as a HC, he could lead this team to try and harness its talent even though that would mean playing and developing rookies at an accelerated rate but give us a chance to succeed after Rodgers’ returned post Adams and MVS.

In reality, I see no coherent plan beyond reluctant use of Doubs and gadgetry with Watson. I see a team trying to play Adams ball with Lazard and Cobb interspersed with ultra timid use of Doubs and Watson with rare (3 in 4 games) ultra low percentage long shots

I get the desire not to look at it this way, but the reality is that LaFleur is as bankrupt in terms of season strategy as he is with respect to game day. Rodgers may be a factor, but he doesn’t call the plays or send on the players and, ultimately, he’s LaFleur’s responsibility. LaFleur very volubly wanted him back. So it’s on LaFleur regardless.

The reality is that LaFleur is timid in terms of personnel and overall play calling and not imaginative. This roster and particularly this O was never going to function by not taking in the challenge of adapting to roster realities. Instead we have ultra conservative hope and the inevitable results. LaFleur is a bust. He will probably be after Rodgers. Incredibly as I find it to say this, we might be doing just as well without Rodgers now, if that led to us using our skill players more naturally.

Without a major change in attitude, this team isn’t beating a good team that’s at least relatively healthy. That’s true even if this D plays lights out. The reality is that we don’t have a Coach with a vision and the ability to marry this roster with game plans or a season one.

We may not have Rodgers next year or the year after, we will have LaFleur, and that ought to be a chilling thought. More and more I’m convinced that LaFleur is the reason Rodgers never wins that second Super Bowl. This season is showing with even more clarity why we’ve had 2, if not 3, flame outs under LaFleur. He’s not a leader, an innovator or tactically adept.

I wonder if the passivity from Pettine (who was aggressive on arrival at first) aren’t partly a result if the influence of LaFleur’s personality away from the cameras. Certainly, LaFleur and recently Rodgers have started to sound more and more like MM at the end of his tenure when he had run out of ideas and knew it.

Agree with everything you stated. LaFleur and Barry need to be better (Barry isn't terrible, though). We need to maximize our resources and scheme our plays to but our units in the best position to succeed and win their matchups.

The Packers need to be more unpredictable and spread the ball around more in the passing game. Get Jones and Dillon more involved there, too.

You mentioned Lowry, but what would you think of if we shipped him and a mid-round draft pick to Washington for DL Daron Payne? The Commanders are likely entering a re-build in the next couple of years, and there have been some rumors about Payne

Payne and Lowry have almost identical cap hits, and the Commanders, likely entering a rebuild, probably want all of the draft capital they can get (I'm thinking something in the range of a 3rd-4th-5th rounder). Payne also wants to get extended, which the Commanders are not willing to do, and if we promised to extend him (which would be huge for our D-line) he would want to come here. I believe we'd have the cap space to do it, as there are a couple of moves we can make in 2023 that can create. Here is a list of possible moves we could make to create cap space:

Extend Gary (+7.9m)
Extend Savage (+5.5m)
Restructure K. Clark (+10.9m)
Restructure Jaire (+9.2m)
Restructure P. Smith (+6.6m)
Extend Douglas (+2.7m)
A. Jones Trade (+10.4 pre-June 1st, +16 post)
Bakh Trade (+5.9 pre-June 1st, +17.5 post)

I don't think the Packers should make all of these moves (in fact I think 2023, if Rodgers retires, will be a good "catch up" year salary-cap wise), but here are some that could be made.

The Packers can also elevate Heflin for a few games to see what he can do. I think we should definitely explore him, and maybe Chris Slayton too.

I think you have something there. Many thought Slaton is that person, but if you read his draft grades it states he needs to work on run defense as he is more of a pass penetrator. Maybe that will come, but in the meantime, I like the idea of using Hefflin against running teams. Or if a team starts to run on us, we make that adjustment. Of course, he would have to be active.

Theres no way in hell Heflin would outplay Lowry, otherwise he would be on a roster right now. As for Lowry, how do you expect him to look when the offense is running with 6 offensive lineman while the defense is playing with 6 in the box, 4 of which are linebackers giving up 60 pounds to the guys blocking them? Not even Aaron Donald would hold up against 30 double team run blocks. Lowry didnt look any worse than Kenny Clark, who got his ass kicked all game long. This isnt a player problem. This is a Joe Barry lacking a pair issue. They're so afraid of giving up the big play that they ran 2 deep against Bailey fricken Zappe all game long. After last season, I had a lot of respect for Barry but that respect is quickly fading. You wont win anything playing not to lose. As for Rodgers, are we really just going to blame all the coaches and continue giving him a pass? Hes the one making the audibles
Hes the one making the decisions and throwing the ball. How many more playoff no-shows does he have to put on film before people come to the realization that its not the coaching? It wasnt Mccarthy's fault and its not Lafleur's either. I dont envy either of them as they were in the difficult position of having to swallow their pride and hope for the best because Rodgers is borderline uncoachable and successfully usurped control. I'm now convinced even some of his own teammates dont like him. In the Bucs game, Devondre Campbell made a big 3rd down stop and as he went to the sideline Rodgers went to give him a high 5. Campbell, looking right at Rodgers, just walked right past him without even acknowledging him. Its the giant elephant in the room and people will just continue ignoring it. Mccarthy had no control over him and neither does Lafleur. If you want to blame somebody in management, blame Murphy. He continued this charade by enabling Rodgers' bullshit with more guaranteed money and trading for his washed up, often injured buddy, a move Gutekunst publicly said he never would have made. All because Murphy thinks rodgers gives him the best shot at another ring before his mandatory retirement age hits. Thanks a lot Murphy you lawyer hack. Now were stuck with 3 more years of finger pointing, endless distractions, and no super bowls.

Yes, In the context of run defense only, I think that there is a good chance that Heflin can help. I will forgo a pressure or two against run heavy teams for that happily.

I’m sorry, but if your theory is true, it would very much be LaFleur’s fault. The HC is responsible for his QB or he’s not a head coach, a guy who publicly called for Rodgers’ return early and clearly.

What's the point of having tools let alone weapons and not using them?. It's a 17 game season. Little opportunity to learn before and after the regular season, so when? Have a QB who feels bringing young players along is beneath him, and a HC who will never confront him. Yikes. Refreshing to see BB coach up his 3rd string QB on the sidelines That's leadership!

Barry needs to be more adaptable as a DC. I don't care what his "philosophy" is, just please do whatever gives the defense the greatest advantage against the opposition and please be able to adapt in-game. That is what good defensive coordinators do. We have seen more man over the past couple of weeks, which is good (more man is great because we have the personnel to carry it out), but I would like more blitzing, maybe bring in the ILBs, Safeties, and CBs occasionally. However, I think we're not appreciating the job Barry's done so far. The Packers are tied with the Cowboys for the third-best scoring defense, they have the #7 overall defense, the #3 passing defense, and the #1 third-down defense. There is still lots of room for improvement (what I said above, #22 run defense), but he has been decently good.

I'm not as worried by the run defense as some, I just think they need to be more consistent. They've shown they can be good, as we saw for part of the NE and CHI games and all of the TB game, they just need to do that consistently. Other than Saquon Barkely, the Packers own every matchup against the Giants.

I'm surprised by the lack of INTs. I think the Packers need to move Douglas outside permanently, as he doesn't have the profile of a nickel CB. Maybe as they get more flexible, more INTs will happen, but playing against the Giants' 3rd string QB presents a good chance for our DBs. They also need to work on their hands, too (there was a dropped INT by Douglas vs NE near the end of the game).

Lowry needs to play better against the run. He is looking like the Lowry of old. I'm starting to think we trade him, maybe with a mid-draft pick, for a better defensive lineman, maybe Daron Payne of the Commanders? There've been trade rumors about him.

As far as TE, I'd like to see Deguara become involved in the passing game. I know he's more of a FB, but he is another option.

If Amos misses a decent amount of time, I think we could consider signing a veteran, like Anthony Harris or Jaquiski Tartt. However, I'd like them to elevate Abernathy first and see what he can do; I was very impressed by him in the preseason, not just with his ball skills but his abilities in coverage.

On the Tonyan issue, I've been yammering about that since before he was even hurt. People want him to "get back to normal." and I get that. But my fear has always been that his one good year was not "normal." I think it was quite abnormal, and I doubt he would ever have gotten back to that level of production and efficiency even if he had never been injured. In a nutshell, I think he's a nice player, but there is no way I would consider him a top ranked TE in the league on the level of Travis Kelce, George Kittle, Mark Andrews, or Darren Waller. I don't think it's even close.

If normal means producing like he did in 2020, that was never going to happen, IMO. He certainly didn't look special before he got hurt in 2021.

People have been concerned about the Packers throwing short so much, and I get that. I think one of the problems is that the Packers basically have no credible threat from the TE position to attack the deep middle.

I'm just saying that I don't think Robert Tonyan poses a very credible threat to attack the deep middle of the field, and that poses a problem for the offense.

That's a pretty stark contrast with and without Ford; I don't think we can afford to pull him off STs. Maybe this isn't a bad time to call up Abernathy for a look see since the Giants receivers aren't much of a threat. If he proves ineffective, they can always go back to Ford.

And their secondary isnt even in the same ballpark as this Packers secondary. Why is this coaching staff (on both sides of the ball) so damn afraid to play a physical style of football? LaFleur oversaw pettine moving from a pressure first principle that he vocally espoused in his first year, to a stop the big play primary objective. He tried to do so with the same system, it failed and he wanted out. Now we see Barry being overly cautious too. Could it be that the instinctively cautious LaFleur on O actually sets the tone for his DCs too?

It still a front 7, whether you play 4-3 or 3-4 so I don't get your point. Maybe it's the players and not the scheme. Certainly, I proved the point we didn't play light box in my thread above, so than our players must play better at the point of attack. We also, multiple times, brought the safety up and played 8 man box Cover 1.

Sometimes it's just the players needing to step up. After watching replays of outside after outside run for big gains I think Sunday was one of those times.

I repeat. It doesn't matter where you line up. It matters where you drop to.

Did you go back and watch all 22 and see how many times the dropped back and how each play ended?

The 9ers have d backs that can cover, tackle, have speed skills and toughness. They drafted and or picked them up in free agency.
Our number one Jairre is oft hurt, in college too. Thus available at the end of round one.
Stokes is a stumble bum, another one pick that cant cover, lacks football knowhow and looks lost most of the time. Wasted pick 2.
Barry the bounce already said his team is NOT talented enough to play man coverage so that should tell us all a lot about his defense.

Stokes is a very good man cover corner. Savage is a very good man cover safety. Alexander is as close to perfect in man coverage as you get. Amos is a wily coyote veteran and can play both zone and man coverage. So we play zone because Barry lacks a pair and somehow lost his manhood (to a lawn mower, I'm guessing?). See comments above.

Playing man coverage is the ultimate rush. Playing two deep breeds complacency.

Really. The bears without a QB, 3rd stringer against the Pats, the saints without everyone. We should be 3-1. and the Giants have no QB thats healthy and we wonder why we lose in the playoffs. Those teams have talent.

Big Bob is probably going through what Jenks is...learning to trust the ACL.

Tonyan speed is currently pedestrian and he is not able to run routes with any change of direction. Those will likely improve greatly with increasing snaps. Same for Jenks. DLmen are beating him where they rarely could before...rushing wide to the QB. Both Packers will look different with play speed in a month, I believe.

This would be Deguara's time to shine. He isn't. What round was he drafted in? Never mind.

Ode to Bruce errr... Joe Barry, MLF, Arod

Joe Barry is a loser man,
Arrived here in a Lion's van.

The number of players was seven,
Gifted him via first round heaven.

He's still asleep well past noon!

His vaunted zone much anticipated,
His brain sluggish and constipated.

Never fear Barry has the guns,
Unfortunately he suffers from the runs.

Moaning and groaning well past noon!

Blame MLF our offensive guru,
He has Arod to make Shanahan's offense look anew.

Chew that tobaccy oh immaculate king,
A PR smile won't get you a ring.

The honeymoon is now over Mcvay clone!

Unimaginative offense not so bold,
Filled with young kids, dink and dunk, looking old.

Arod is bored eating stale mutton,
He should try some Peyote buttons.

Sporting a new revelation tattoo,
Hey boss, the plane, the plane, yabba dabba doo.

First half flashbacks lead to season ending window pain!

The question is to blitz or not,
Meanwhile Barry is stuck on the pot.

Line up Lousy and Reed next to an all pro,
They keep running the ball we know.

Barry still moaning and groaning until tomorrow afternoon!

Joe Barry's attitude is infectious,
So is Aids, Ebola, Covid and Prevent Defenses.

Morph and Grundy need to make a Uturn,
Otherwise we will all flap our lips and burn.

Thank you for listening to my diatribe,
I'm pretty sure, I have the right vibe.

I'm gonna sleep until the afternoon!

Please understand. Barry was chosen because they told him he would have to use the Capers/Pettine playbook due to the lack of talent on defense and he agreed. They threw in dont even think about us getting you some top free agents, Rodgers and Bak have all the money.

I don't recall that being part of the conversation, unlike you I was not invited to the negotiation. Do you represent struggling poets? Asking for a friend, you know it.
