Cory's Corner: Big Things Are Expected From Tuck

Tight ends aren't usually the finishing touch for NFL offenses, but Kraft has all the essentials for a strong Packers offense.

The Packers have been searching for the next dynamic tight end since Jermichael Finley.

Tucker Kraft has entered the chat.

Kraft now has the most receiving yards for a Packers tight end in franchise history in a two-year span. More than Finley, Richard Rodgers, Paul Coffman and Bubba Franks. Finley’s last season in Green Bay was 2013. He averaged 464 receiving yards in his six seasons, cresting at 767 yards and eight touchdowns in 2011.

Now to be in the same breath as Coffman is a big deal. He is the Packers career leader for tight ends in receptions (322), yards (4,223) and touchdowns (39) and was enshrined in the Packers Hall of Fame in 1994. Just to be mentioned alongside a three-time Pro Bowler is pretty amazing.

The one thing that doesn’t get associated with tight ends is yards after the catch. Kraft’s YAC last season was an astounding 9.3 — which was highest among all tight ends by 1.5 yards. He also managed 229 YAC after contact, which again led all tight ends last year.

“Always trying to make the first one miss,” said Kraft this past October. “But head down, bull in a China shop. That’s just what I do.”

And that’s what makes Kraft so special. He has turned into a one-man wrecking crew from a position that only gets about four targets a game. That’s what is completely bizarre. He has turned heads and dropped jaws while nearly being completely anonymous.

So that makes Jordan Love’s job simple: just get the ball to Kraft more. But there’s also a slight problem with that notion. The Packers just drafted wide receiver Matthew Golden 23rd overall, Jayden Reed is a can-do everything wideout and Romeo Doubs is arguably the best route runner on the team. Then there’s Josh Jacobs, who has a real shot of being the NFC leader in rushing yards in 2025 after placing fourth last year.

This Packers offense will be such a delicate balance in 2025. There are so many mouths to feed, but coach Matt LaFleur and Love have to decide between wants and needs. You know, you may want to have ice cream for breakfast everyday, but that won’t be a fruitful decision after clothes get a little snug.

Same with this team. Kraft wants to be considered an offensive cornerstone and in order for the Packers to get to double-digit wins, Green Bay needs him to become a focal point of the offense.

Now the obvious argument is that Kraft has only been a pro for two years. But his numbers took a huge leap from Year 1 to Year 2 and it only makes sense that he takes another big leap heading into Year 3.

“Tuck is going to be a big part of the offense,” said Love last month. “I think Tuck since he stepped on the scene, has kind of shown who is as a playmaker and shown us reasons why we should just keep giving him the ball. I think a big part of going into this season is going to be finding ways to continue to get Tuck the ball. Get him as many touches as we can in a game, because he’s dynamic and does some really good things once he gets his hands on the ball.”

I’d love to get the inside scoop as to what goes on in game planning the offense from week to week. Is it, “We can exploit weaknesses this way”, or, “We gotta prioritize getting player X the ball because he’s so good” or a combo of the two? At least MLF is playing lip service to the latter. I think we all love seeing 85 running people over. It feeds the soul.

"There are so many mouths to feed, but coach Matt Lafleur and Love have to decide between wants and needs."

I would love to see Kraft and the RBs more involved in the passing game, but Lafleur is going to have to remember he has TEs and RBs on field on passing downs. His under use of the TEs and almost zero use of the RBs in the passing game last year was near criminal, particularly in light of the drop problem the WRs had. Hopefully Lafleur has a better play calling year in 2025.

Offense went stale once his buddy showed up from the Jets.

He’s in San Fran now so that won’t be a distraction

Time to open up the playbook and go up tempo. Can swap wide outs , running backs more than any team in the NFL. Fresh young legs ..like young Driver. Jordy. Jones Adams And Jennings when he wasn’t a cry baby.

Josh Jacob’s will be fresh going into the playoffs.

Using the RBs as a receiver once and awhile to stretch the field horizontally and give Love an outlet when he is under pressure. Almost never saw that last season despite Love being injured and largely unable to run.

Josh Jacobs--36 catches, 342 yards, 1 TD
Emmanuel Wilson--11 catches, 48 yards, 1 TD
Chris Brooks--11 catches, 69 yards
Marshawn Lloyd--1 catch, 3 yards

Jacobs was 15th in receiving yardage for RBs. I would like to see him higher than that, but he was 6th in rushing yards, as well as rushing attempts, so they are using him plenty. He had a couple seasons in Oakland with a lot more catches (54 and 53) but not many more yards. His yards per catch with the Packers was 9.5--the highest of his career.

It would be nice to see Lloyd get on the field more and catch passes out of the backfield, like Aaron Jones used to do. But I think improvement in the passing game will need to come mainly through WRs getting open more and not dropping so many passes.

Jacob’s a stud

I expect the others to really step it up this year.

Maybe see two back sets. Now and then. Jacobs and Lloyd or Wilson and Brooks

Used to run that with Jones and Dillion

Bennett and Dorsey

Thanks Guam.....100% agree and if ML is not careful a very good TE is going to leave GB for a payday elsewhere where there is an organization recognizes another ML shortfall and is happy to add more targets to the second best Offensive player on our team behind only Jacobs. I expect Golden to make this an excellent top 3...#11 I hope is consistent an entire season as well. GPG

A related thought that has been bouncing around in my head recently: It looks like we may have an offensive line this year that is built slightly more to run block than pass block. Our North Division opponents have all juiced up their pass rushes this off season.
So it’s possible that Love will have even less time in the pocket this year.
How do you counteract that? Well, for one thing, the Packers drafted a dangerous X-factor in Savion Williams and already have another in Jayden Reed (as well as adding Mecole Hardman)
My prediction is that we will see a LOT more use of misdirection plays to slow the pass rush, to help this O-line.
If it works, the deep shots to Golden, Watson, etc. may get a blink more time, and even when it doesn’t, the short field will be more chaotic, which will be great for Kraft and Reed (and hopefully Williams and Jacobs).

"So it’s possible that Love will have even less time in the pocket this year."

Barring injury, I don't think it will change very much. The key guys, Tom and Walker, are still there. Myers was a decent pass blocker, but Jenkins shouldn't be a step down in play. It all comes down to Banks and Rhyan (at least, as we're looking at it in early July).

Hopefully, but Banks seems to be a worse pass blocker than Myers, and the two young guys might easily struggle a bit if they become starters.

Yes, Kraft has great YAC numbers, but his ADOT is pretty low...around 5 (a little above, a little below--depending on the source you use). He's mostly an outlet guy, but that's mitigated by his value as a blocker. His number of routes run in 2024 was something like 17th among TEs, but that's so variable depending on scheme and given the number of times the Packers run the ball, that shouldn't be too surprising. His target share was around 16%. That put him around 20th among TEs.

I'd argue that the Packers have struggled to figure out how to feature a TE for the last 15 years (give or take). By drafting Golden and Williams, it seems that the Packers are leaning more strongly into 11 personnel groupings--that shouldn't be a shock: 11 personnel has been the coin of the NFL realm for a long time. When the Packers brought in both Musgrave and Kraft, it had that feel that maybe they were going to shift to a Patriots-esque "Gronk and Hernandez" type of attack. That hasn't really materialized, and--yes--Musgrave has struggled to stay on the field.

So in the end, the question of what is meant by "focal point" is what's at issue here. I don't think his number of targets or routes run will change very much. He's still going to be asked to block a lot...they really didn't do anything to find another TE who will demand snaps and be a quality blocker. Maybe they feel Musgrave is moving that direction. The thing that can change is the types of routes he runs, pushing him downfield more and hitting seams. His catch % will naturally drop if they do, but the payback might be worth it.

I think we're in agreement on a lot of this.

I would argue that the Packers don't want to feature a TE, and their first concern is a guy who will stay healthy, get his man blocked, and make the most out of some limited targets. That's Kraft.

11 personnel is the coin of the realm. I've pointed out the math of that on several occasions. If you have 3 WRs on the field, and you don't play nickel defense, you're exposing yourself to a big play. But that's leaving you with 6 on 6 (including the TE) against the run, and if you have a guy Jacobs behind a pretty good offensive line, that's desirable for Green Bay.

For the last several years, I've pointed out that we don't throw to the TE very much, usually just a little over 105 times/season. Last year, the TE spot only got 88 targets, and 70 of them (4 per game) went to Kraft. I think Kraft has earned, and deserves, another target or two per game. He was third in yards for us, and in yards/touch. He led the team in TDs, with 7. All this on 4 targets.

They have Ben Simms for that needs to improve but he can get it done.

Tight end crossing routes with Musgrave and him to open up the middle for Lloyd on a linebacker

I think Kraft and Lloyd will have huge years

Kraft top three in NFL. Needs to stay Hungry.

Need before want.

Fans are like children who always want dessert before dinner, which always ends with the need being ignored and the want making them feel ill and hungry later.

Make need an easier/better dish to serve, and the want will be more enjoyable, even with a smaller serving.

The fact that Kraft, in two seasons, has surpassed Finley, whose mention still makes me cringe in pain, speaks volumes to why I still cringe hearing Finley. The castor oil for that cringe is Richard Rodgers.

Something got lost in translation here...which dish is Kraft? Is it Potato salad with mayo? Mac and Cheese? If I order the second one, will Tucker get more passes thrown his way?

Kraft is a stud in his own right. If Musgrave can become the dude we suspected, then the offense will add a dimension we have never witnessed.
The Gronk/Hernandez comparisons keep dancing in my head.
Go Packers!!!
