Cory's Corner: Ty Montgomery Must Go

At this point I don’t even care if it’s true.

Ty Montgomery has to go.

The fourth-year Packers hybrid skill position player was spotted by NFL.com on Sunday as having a “tantrum” on the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum sideline in the closing minutes of the Rams’ 29-27 win. A helmet throw to the turf is what led many to surmise that Montgomery went on the field very upset to catch the Rams kickoff after Greg Zuerlein nailed a 34-yard field goal with 2:05 left.

“The plan was to stay in [the end zone] and give the ball to Aaron Rodgers,” McCarthy said after the game. “Obviously the plan there is to stay in the end zone. Two minute. We actually talked about it as a team.”

That’s weird because that’s not what Montgomery said.

“I’ve never been a guy to completely disobey what I’m being told,” Montgomery said on Monday in the Packers locker room. “I think you can ask a lot of guys in our locker room. That’s not what I do. That’s not the type of man I am. That’s not the kind of person I am.”

Frankly, at this point I don’t know who Montgomery is. Because Montgomery caught the kickoff and took it out of the end zone. He returned it 22 yards before coughing it up, ending a chance for Aaron Rodgers to get his 22ndcomeback win. All the people that are saying that Montgomery simply made a mistake by coming out of the end zone are misguided. Coming out of the end zone took precious time off the clock and even if he held on to the ball, Rodgers wouldn’t have had the luxury of running a play before the two-minute warning.

The Packers had a clear shot to not only hand the Rams their first loss of the season, sending the 1972 Dolphins into yet another frenzy, but that win likely would’ve put Green Bay back on track. The defense played remarkable and it gave birth to Jaire Alexander — the newest shutdown corner in this league — and it showed that Clay Matthews has some juice left in the tank.

After Montgomery’s dreadful decision, NFL.com reported that the Packers’ sideline was irate. Unnamed players and coaches quickly threw Montgomery under the bus for a mistake that shouldn’t be made in freshman ball let alone against one of the best teams in the NFL.

Montgomery has also claimed that he doesn’t understand his role. I’ve said before the season that Montgomery will be one of trickiest guys to evaluate on this team because of his versatility. He’s a jack-of-all-trades but a master of none, especially now with two solid running backs at the position. That’s on the coaching staff. I mean, we’re on the doorstep of Week 9. In most respects, the Packers are still staggering around in preseason mode.

But that doesn’t negate the fact that Montgomery may have committed insubordination, which is one of the worst sins for a professional football player next to laying down or giving up. And if he didn’t follow orders, he compounded the mistake by lying about it.

Even if McCarthy told him nothing, the locker room is now completely split. There are players and coaches that are vehemently against Montgomery and others that are standing in his corner.

The Packers cannot keep Montgomery on this team. That doesn’t mean he has to be cut. If the Packers can package Montgomery to strike a deal with the Raiders for Bruce Irvin before today’s 4 p.m. ET trade deadline, that would put a red ribbon on this whole situation. But if they cannot strike a deal by the deadline, Green Bay should wait until Saturday to release him to prevent Bill Belichick and the Patriots from getting him. If released before, Belichick would pump Montgomery for information and try to gain every advantage possible.

Montgomery does add value for the Packers. He can take handoffs, catch passes and step up in pass protection. Green Bay needs to use that value to get him off the team.

I honestly don’t see how one could keep Ty on the team at this point... I know that TM has played for us for some time now, switched positions, etc., but the possible rift that keeping this guy in the locker room will cause needs to be squashed promptly.... Bostick was never given a second chance, and this error at least equals that one (granted, Bostick wasn’t the same caliber player).

If we see Aaron Jones being punished for an off-field issue by cutting his playing time to the detriment of the team, then what will it say to the players if we keep TM?

If this is true, why can't they?

They can release him before, but if they don't want the Patriots to get him, they have to wait till Saturday. Saturday the Patriots would not be able to bring him in.

Waivers lasts 24 hours. So if GB doesn't release him until Saturday, then he won't be awarded to a team until late Sunday. Still would have to sign a contract and pass a physical.

If all the reports are true which sounds like they are, I don't know how they will be able to keep Montgomery on the roster.

He said that he didn't bring the ball out of the endzone after being upset from being taken out of the game the series before. Of course he won't admit that. But connecting the dots it really seems like he was trying to be the hero. Which IMO, basically it looks like he said FU to the team and he will do his own thing.

I wouldn't doubt at all if they tried to trade him today. If they do plan to release him, I think they may hold off until Saturday to do so. That way the Patriots can't bring him in. And that being said I wouldn't doubt if they did nothing. If he does remain on the team it would not surprise me if he was left off the 46 or removed from KR duties.

This all being said, the scumbags that are out on twitter threatening him and his family are nothing but jackasses! That is BS and that crap needs to end! This is a game and for these low life degenerates to go and threaten his family over it... That is just pathetic. I don't give a crap what he did on the field. That is just wrong!

Well said! Unbelievable that people think that is okay behaviour. It's a game for entertainment, the stakes are not remotely high in real terms and yet people get destroyed personally for making mistakes or fucking up.

I'm sure we were all frustrated as hell, but go read a book and live your own life.

It is wild that people are so deeply crazed to threaten another person and family over a sport? Really?? People need to get their heads on straight. Just like I hate when people are rude or vile when attending a game. We are all there to enjoy our teams play. Don't take it out on each other personally. I am all for bantering back and forth about the team but don't go personal.

NFL games are not "just sport" to very, very many.

The NFL provides an actual living to very very many through sports gambling.

That fact just got a lot worse after the Supreme Court decision on allowing ststes to decide on gambling.

The results DO matter more than "win one for the gipper" whether you know and like it or not.

This crap has been going on before sports gambling became legal. Bostick received the same death threats in 2014.

The results matter to people, yes. it matters to me. But the difference is I'm not a dumbass that is going to hide behind my phone or keyboard and make asinine threats.

If a person gambles on said sport and loses, it is not the fault of anyone in the game. Its their own decision to make that bet and to gamble. No one forced them to gamble. Thats all on them.

Also if a person makes a death threat on twitter or whatever social media they want to, they should be held accountable. Would people make death threats on there if they faced a year+ in prison for making such a threat? I highly doubt it.

No matter what a person does in a game, it doesn't give people the right to harrass and make threats to the family of the player. Its bad enough the player himself gets threats but then you have to threaten the family of that player.
That isn't right!

Many many people do not make a living gambling. Many many people lose money gambling - that's why betting companies have more money than they know what to do with.

Also, because you chose to bet on something does not mean that the people involved owe you anything more because of it.

Not sure what your point is Johnblood

I wish I could say 'well said'. The beginning was, the end was just repeating untrue trash. Please stop. Even Monty has not claimed the death threats or other crap. Please stop pretending to be some kind of hero taking a stand against things that did not happen. You don't help anyone and you hurt what started out a decent article (something that is getting rare here). Take a deep breath and quit the hysteria.

What Monty says is that "APPARENTLY" there are "UNKNOWN" threats not that he received any threat at all

Excellent ILPackerBacker. I agree. I listened to his comments on the local news last night and I saw a person who was trying to offer excuses. There was no death threats to his family. I don't believe that for a second. The guy was actually trying to act like he was the victim in all this. He denied what he did and started to point fingers at others. I couldn't believe what I heard.

Here's what I didn't hear coming from Ty's mouth when he talked to reporters yesterday. "I'm sorry, I f'd up. I was pissed because I wanted more playing time and I let my emotions get in the way of the team. I apologize to all the players and coaches on this team for my selfish act. I take full responsibility my actions".

I he said something like that I would possibly forgive him but he doubled down on stupid and now is the total victim in this. Unbelievable. He needs to go. He's supposedly smart. Sometimes the so called smart people are the ones that are last to "get it". Ty doesn't get what he did or will not admit to his wrongdoings. Not a player that deserves to be on this team.

The frustration was building - he made a couple of really good KR's that were called back by penalty. In the Detroit (or SF?) game, he looked really frustrated that they were kicking deep into the end zone. I wonder if he wanted to return punts too...

Such a shame that all this has played out like it has. Had high hopes for Ty as a player at various points (after his rookie season in the slot and then after he showed something at RB) but we have two better backs, or at least ones that the coaches trust more so his value is limited - especially with the rookie WRs playing solid.

Have to agree that getting anything for him in a trade would make sense, even a late rounder. Move on, keep the locker room in check and give the guy a chance somewhere else. Split carries between Jones and Williams, shouldn't be hard to find a third body at RB.

Big week coming up, a win at Foxborough changes the complexion of the season in a big way.

Also hoping we make an interesting move today for an edge rusher.

I also had high hopes for Montgomery. In all honesty I think if we had a different offensive coordinator/play caller I think Montgomery would be used more in the offense. IMO, Montgomery should be used more like a James White or Kamara/Sproles. The RB's that are used as a receiver. Used in a special way.

I agree though, that if they can get a deal made in a trade, I'd consider doing it for sure. Odds are he won't be resigned anyways, so why not try to get something for him.

I agree too. I hope we make a deal today. I don't know/think it will happen though.

Yeah it's a frustrating part of this offense - seems to be an inability to utilise that kind of player in the same way other OCs do - but maybe that's just because life with 12 makes you plan in a different way.

But yeah if he ends up in New England somehow you know he'll have a few huge games.

Monty lacks the "quickness" of the other players you mention and it would be much more difficult for him to create separation. Through no fault of his own, he is simply a player who is able to contribute to the running game and the receiving game who possesses marginal ability and will never be a star on the field.

I believe he made a judgment error which is hard for us fans to accept and may also be hard for Packer coaches to disregard.

Well said. Plenty of mistakes on this team from coaches to players. If Ty had a real role on the team and was part of a high functioning offense, we would all be moving forward. We have a sputtering offense, with a part-time run game, invisible TEs and play calling from a 90's west coast offense. Ty Montgomery is now the lightning rod for a lot of frustration and, unfortunately, hate.

Be interesting to see what the coaches and this team do next week.

I had hope for Monty. Even thought his play helped the offense and would be another offensive threat. But Ty crossed into dangerous territory Sunday. This now is a toxic situation. His actions cannot go unnoticed. His behavior must be dealt with. Ty BLEW IT. The last thing this team needs is more distractions. Ty's injuries have slowed his progress. We do need to End Ty's Time here.

Honestly, I don't expect the Packers to cut #88 outright. I think that unless they deal him (and I don't think they will, because he doesn't have much value) he hangs around in the doghouse for the rest of 2018.

One positive to cutting/trading him, though: it means it's that much harder to NOT play Aaron Jones.

This Packer team is a hot mess right now and McCarthy is at a very crucial point in his coaching career. The rumblings started in the offseason remember:

*Rodgers being very upset about management not even giving him a heads up about letting his QB Coach go and then McCarthy hired one of his old buddies as QB coach whom apparently Rodgers isn't too crazy about.
I mean Rodgers is only your team leader and a HOF QB!

*The strange interview with LB's coach Winston Moss who should have been shown the door after his Bizare interview in which he threw his own little temper tantrum at the press like some entitled teenager.
Great leadership there Winston.

*Or when Gute had the chance to make a Ron Wolf type move for a Reggie White type of player in Kalil Mack that would have transformed the Defensive side of the team. Gute was like, nah, we good. Instead Mack is now on his way to leading the Bears Defense back to greatness.

*Or the curious case of Clinton Dix who clearly hasn't been playing to 100% of his ability for several years and has let his contract situation become a distraction saying he probably won't be back next year. That kind of stuff gets around a locker room and spreads like a cancer.

*Selfish Ty Montgomery and his little sideline meltdown, then disobeying of coaches orders to not bring the ball out of the end zone and costing the Packers a chance at a huge victory.

*Montgomery also mentioned that coaches are fighting amongst themselves. Really? Great leadership there!

*And now we have unnamed players talking behind other players backs, dividing the locker room

BOLD LEADERSHIP IS NEEDED!!
This is a defining moment in Packer history!
Gute, Murphy and McCarthy have a chance to be bold here and make the moves necessary to jump start the team or they can sit on their hands (like Ted Thompson) and just hope it blows over, which would be a BIG mistake. It's now or never men, make it happen or this will spin out of control and plunge the Packers back into the dark depths of the 70's and 80's!

I'm not sure why all the dislikes Nostradamus. I wholeheartedly agree bold steps need to be taken but when you have a silo like the general manager, the president, and the coach as one silo how in the hell can any changes be made??? Because the biggest change that needs to be made is the coaching staff period. I seem to remember one of the biggest words use in the offseason was silo. That seems like a serious Silo to me.

The reason nostradamus gets so many dislikes is the unfounded constant doom and gloom with unsubstantiated claims and no sources.

Of course Rodgeds was upset that his QB coach got let go he was also upset when they let go of Nelson. Now after seeing MVS step up again the WR position looks good. How do we know how Rodgers feels and how is that a reflection on MM?

For Winston Moss he came across as rude to reporters once when he had a bad day. Since then we haven't heard much from him. Reporters are rude to coaches all the time but no one complains about them. Petty complaint and Moss has been a pretty good coach. How does this reflect poorly on MM?

Gute did everything he could to land Mack and the Raiders are the one who dealt him to the Bears because they thought they could get a higher 1st round draft pick from a worse team. Mack is now dealing with ankle issues. Your example here is pathetic and is on Gute not MM even if you were right which you're not.

HHCD is in his 5th year hard to believe the last several years have been up and down. He had a pro bowl year in 2016 and a downbeat in 2017 and has been a playmaker in 2018. Crosby also had a down year and a down game I still think he's a good player.

Everyone is upset about TY's selfish act and he's done nothing to help himself since. That's on the player.

As usual nostradamus spits out a big pile of garbage and calls for more from the coaching staff without offering any actual ideas or evidence. That's what leads to all of the downvotes. I'll get my fair share as well, who cares? Nostradamus is more than welcome to share his opinion and I'm welcome to refute it. At least no one here is making death threats and I've only been threatened once.

Bottomline if TY wasn't selfish Rodgers more than likely puts the Packers in a position to beat the only undefeated team in the NFL IN THEIR OWN STADIUM. MM put the Packers in that position with Gute. Rather than be doom and gloom over the loss they being happy that this wasn't the blowout fans were anticipating. We fought a hell of a game and found a way to beat ourselves rather than take a beating. Sucks, but it was a hell of a game!

Love the truth of this recap. Beating ourselves has become the M.O. of these Packers over the last half decade. As Rodgers said - we had plenty of chances to win this game - but didn't. Montgomery was just one reason on top of numerous other reasons this season.

And over all - it was a hell of a game.

Just to throw a word of caution...if Jones gets hurt or decides to smoke weed and gets caught again the Packer's RB position would be toast. I have to think that the players would realize that as well, which may be a sobering thought to Gutsey as he tries to find a trade partner.

So true. Prior to last year, we had a carousel of poor RBs coming through to get a body into the backfield and no one stayed healthy. We are in a good position today. Mike should find ways to better use the talent he has in the backfield and make this offense multi-dimensional.

I have no doubt that there is someone on a practice squad somewhere who could fill the role of third string back. The truth is that the Packers have invested a lot of time and put a lot of faith in TM, and he really hasn't delivered on a consistent basis. Guys are given opportunities. TM has had his, and they haven't worked out. Let's not talk like he is irreplaceable.

One guy that Packers should not part ways with is HHCD. Pay that man his money. This talk of trading him is not rational. Who are your safeties then: Whitehead and Brice? That's like throwing in the towel on the season. Brice and Tramon Williams? That would be great if the Packers' preferred cornerbacks were consistently healthy, but King and Alexander have both had their injuries this year, and King may be one of those guys who is never able to play 16 games. Jackson may be ready to roll, but if Alexander and King go down again you're talking about Breeland and Tony Brown in the slot and on the outside. You ready for that? I read somewhere yesterday that the Packers can afford to trade HHCD because they have so much depth in the secondary. Really?

I do believe the Green Bay Packers have the capital in the backfield to replace hhcd. Tony Brown is an excellent cornerback if he can come to terms with his immaturity. I watched the combine this year and he killed it. That's just my opinion. But you're right on the Ty Montgomery thing. He is definitely replaceable. There is a practice squad player out there out of the 32 teams who could play a third-down back position on this team. No doubt.

Regardless of his insubordination, he hasn't done much of anything his entire career other than maybe a half of a year where he was above average. Other than that, his career has been riddled with injuries and inconsistent play. In my opinion, he has been a distraction to this team due to the fact that he is a jack of all trades and a master of none. Mike McCarthy is to blame for his inability to place such a player in a spot that allows him to be successful.
On top of all that, is it just me or does McCarthy remind you of a Mike Sherman towards the end of his coaching career? It's almost like he has no control over Aaron Rodgers. He seems to let him do what he wants and there's no consequences. Rogers has played average this year and I believe it's due to an offensive play-caller who has the mindset of a conservative turtle.

We are one play away from being down to two RBs. Who do we replace Ty with?

TY was converted from WR to RB. Convert Moore to RB maybe then he won't drop the ball. ~~~~~~~

Stanford players seem to emerge with a high level of arrogance and entitlement. Not saying they aren’t good players, but Reid, Sherman, Baldwin and Montgomery all fit that description.

Lets pump the brakes didn’t Mason Crosby miss 5 FGs? Didn’t Rodgers loose 2 fumbles in Detroit? Didn’t Cobb and Adams have a drop fest in Washington? Didn’t Clay make a bone head play vs Chicago? Ty the ultimate professional that has never done anything to hurt the team is now the ultimate scapegoat. Rodgers should have stood by him like he did for Crosby who has missed his fair share of crucial kicks. Was it a boneheaded play of course but to say he should be released and getting death threats is just unacceptable. For people to think that he did this as an act of insubordination is ridiculous he’s not even built like that. This game comes down to more than just Ty.

Sounds like you’re saying Rodgers holds black players to higher standards. Fact is, we don’t know whether Montgomery was insubordinate or not. McCarthy seemed to say he was. There’s a difference between that and just not executing in a play.

WTF are you even talking about? Nothing about what I said had anything to do with race I clearly mentioned Cobb and Adams in that list. The point is you have your teammates back no matter what he already has to deal with that decision the last thing he needs is his team pilling up on him. And yes I totally believe that Ty’s decision had nothing to do with insubordination seeing as the guy has never done anything like that crazy how y’all hold on to MM words now but disregard him and want fired any other time. It’s very believable that MM didn’t give him clear instructions to take a knee seeing as this is the same guy that ran the ball at the one inch line and didn’t even use the power back to do it.

I think Rodgers does have his friends: Cobb, Adams, Bakh, Crosby. Not a racial thing at all.

Has he really been given the chance? MM hasn’t done the best job utilizing him he could be a dangerous little gadget player if used correctly best believe guys like McVay, Payton, BB, Reid or even Doug Pederson could get the best out of him.

This is just another experiment by the Packers that didn't work. We have 2 RB's and are set at WR, someone pointed out there are tons of RBs on 31 other teams practice squads that can be a 3rd down back. Didn't MM have Monty listed as the #1 RB coming out of TC? WTF, just another example of his pigheaded stubborness. Maybe it was because AJ was suspended for the 1st 2 games but I don't buy it. The limited amount of carries for Jones proves MM and Philbin don't know what they're doing.

I contend that MM knows exactly how good a runner is Jones, but until he’s assignment sure and solid in pass pro, he’s going to be limited. Also, want to keep him healthy and fresh.

Well, if we want to look at where all the locker room talk started. Aaron Rodgers is a good place to start with. His cheap constant shots at McCarthy certainly poisoned the atmosphere. It does not help that McCarthy is on his last contract year and must step carefully around the many minefields both on and off the football field. A little maturity from QB1 who is suppose to be the leader of this team is called for. Outside that, McCarthy must get his coaches on he same page, and not let the challenges of the current season overwhelm them. Easier said than done. Ty Montgomery is good player who help the packers win against SF before the bye. I am not willing to blow him up over this. As I said before, time for a little leadership from QB1 before this problem gets out of control.

McCarthy is under contract through the 2019 season.

Packers fans and Aaron Rodgers keep scapegoating people.

The problem is aaron rodgers. Is rodgers really better than brady, brees, mahomes, goff, cousins, trubitsky, alex smith. No, he isn't.

If you really believe that any of those QBs you mentioned are better than Aaron Rodgers then you don't have a clue about what you are watching.

First of all which them are playing with a lineman's knee brace with a significant knee injury?
Second which of them besides Brady and Brees are first ballot HOFers?

Third Brady is the only QB on your list that has won a league MVP award besides Rodgers. So much for your post. Case closed. Thanks, Since '61

IMO ....

Montgomery is an intelligent, well meaning individual that readily shows his emotions.

Being in a contract year and seeing his playing time decrease, he has to wonder about his role on the team. It is possible that his role has become less and less.

Montgomery mentioned that he wanted to make a play in the game and hadn't made one prior to the kick return. Despite what he says, having that thought in the back of your mind is going to skew your judgment. It is a "me-first" mind-set rather than a "team-first" mind-set. I'd imagine that their a many NFL players with that mind-set on a full-time basis.

Given how Montgomery failed to pick up Donald when Donald got past Lane on the previous series, it is difficult to say Montgomery is assignment sure. How could he not have one eye on Lane and Donald!

I thought that GB could have used Montgomery's talents to a greater degree (e.g. splitting out Gurley). Although they do it, it is not a big part of the offensive game plan.

Right now, giving more time to Montgomery means less time to Jones and Williams.

So, what it his value to the team? Third string running back with few yards per carry! Inconsistent pass protection! Taking up room that another player could fill!

Unfortunately, bringing in Davis doesn't give them a third running back. They can't go to Ripkowski either. If they bring in Davis, they have to make two moves.

In general, McCarthy's use of RB's is extra ordinary. A large part of why "Missionary Mike's" (he only utilizes one position!) offensive is beyond stale (crusty?). You have former WR at RB, a great pass catching RB with Williams and a dynamic talent with Jones and yet, GB uses their RB's in the vein of Joe Gibbs.

To me this is coaching fail as well. If they wanted a touchback why not line Ty up with his feet at the goal line and tell him to let anything go that is not in front just like on Punt returns. You no longer have to field Kick Offs in the endzone anymore. If a ball gets to the end zone and touches the ground, it’s an automatic touchback.

Of course Zook and MMs strategy has not been adjusted.

Because that opens up the risk of a deliberately short kick that a gunner can get too, or simply takes time off the clock to down it, which marks the end of the run whether at the 1 yard line or wherever. You don’t have to kick into the end zone either.

How would having the returners forward increase that risk? They'd be in even better position to deal with that.

If indeed TM was insubordinate then the Packers must get rid of him. A coach can not let a player do what he wants to do, unless a player has the permission to make a decision on his own. If a coach makes a decision then the team and individual players must abide by that decision. I would hate to see Monty go, but he must follow the direction of the coach and do what's in the best interest of the team and not be hard headed and selfish. The results of TM's decision speaks for itself. If TM, or anyone else, does not follow coaches directions or orders then that player must be let go.

TM has to go. MM is losing this team, he has already lost his QB who may be the main reason MM is losing the team. If we lose 3 of the next 4 games it is time to move on from MM. The two coordinators both have head coaching experience - let one of them finish out the season. With Rodgers and the talent, some young, on offense Packers should be able to bring in a dynamic offensive coach to be head coach - that seems to be the formula right now for success in the NFL.

Keep TY !! Cut MM ! He is supposed to be in charge!! This should never have been an issue. This should have bee n drilled into his brain about communication to coaches especially special teams that they do their job after that 2014 Seattle NFC Championship. This debauchery confirms MM needs to go!! Everyone is still blaming everyone. No ! This ALL FALLS on MM!

I believe that Monty should go but I think that it is likely that he won't get traded. He will more likely be released but we'll see.

There has been a lot written this season about the Packers lack of an identity. They have an identity.
Their identity is to play just well enough to lose on the road and squeak by with wins at home.

Vikings game - bad officiating late in the 4th quarter results in a tie. Get down by 18 points against the Redskins and have a receiver drop fest. Loss
Get down by 17 points against the Lions partly due to players too stupid to get out of the way of a punt and miss 5 FGs, 4 of which should have been made. Loss
Play a great game on the road against the Rams and then waste it with a KO return that shouldn't be made and a fumble. Loss

It should noted that all of these examples have happened while the Packers were playing on the road. Although we had a great environment for a win thanks to the fans who made it to LA. The atmosphere in NE will not be very friendly this week. Who knows what that will mean. Getting back to Monty if he is not released or traded I would not dress him for this game. I would let him sit and maybe the team can reset for the home game against the Dolphins. We'll see. Thanks, Since '61
