Eagles 40 Packers 33: Game Balls & Lame Calls

Wild game may pull the trigger on the start of a team rebuild.

Wow. There is a lot to process from the Green Bay Packers 40-33 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday night. But I see two major takeaways.

One is the quarterback transition in the fourth quarter. It would be hard not to be impressed by the way Jordan Love came off the bench and started throwing lasers all over the field, moving the offense to ten points in two possessions. My excitement must be tempered by the knowledge that the Eagles had a fourteen point lead when Love entered the game and were playing back in the secondary. Still, many of the throws were impressive. In fact, his best pass of the night was the one dropped by Aaron Jones, a terrific back shoulder dart. It’s too early to know how long the onblique injury to Aaron Rodgers will keep him out, but it seems like it would be fun to see what Love could do if he played out the rest of the season.

The second takeaway is the mind-boggling continued decline of the defense. This is a unit that is clearly getting worse with each game. When you put 33 points on the board against one of the best teams in the NFL, and you still lose, it borders on the absurd. I mean, really absurd, as in giving up 363 yards rushing, 153 of them to Jalen Hurts, who came within 17 yards of breaking the all time single game rushing record by a quarterback. Either Joe Barry couldn’t figure out how to adjust to stop the running of Hurts, or the Packers tried to adjust and simply weren’t good enough to do it.

Time after time, the offense would turn the momentum in Green Bay’s favor, only to have the defense fail miserably, allowing the Eagles to come right back down the field and resume control. The futility carried right through to the bitter end. With 57 seconds left to play, the Packers somehow still had a chance, trailing by seven, needing only to hold Philly on a third and three to get the ball back. Yet, even with everybody in the stadium understanding the Eagles were going to run the ball, the defense still couldn’t prevent Miles Sanders from bullying his way through the right side for four yards, putting the Pack out of its misery.

I have not been in favor of making mid-season coaching changes, but Barry can’t survive this, and shouldn’t.

GAME BALLS

AJ Dillon

For the first time since early in the season, Quadzilla was running with the kind of power and explosion that made him one of the bright young running back prospects in the league last year. He got just eight carries, but cashed them in for 64 yards and a score. He also showed great hands on three receptions for 24 yards. But mostly, he was bull dozing through tacklers like a freight train. Apparently, reports of his demise are premature.

Christian Watson

The rookie had already shown he is a deep threat, but he is starting to display some impressive versatility. The run after the catch on his 63 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter was eye popping. But now he is making plays as a possession receiver. On fourth down in the first quarter, Watson held on to a 21 yard rope from Rodgers, despite taking a hard hit. In the third quarter he took a shot to the head but held on to an eleven yard throw. If he can hold up under that kind of beating, he’s going to be a star in this league.

Keisean Nixon

I had to rub my eyes to make sure I was seeing this right. A Green Bay kick returner? Running the ball out of the end zone from six yards deep? And busting through holes for returns of over fifty yards? Been a long time. Not since the early days of Randall Cobb has the Green and Gold been treated to such dynamics on kick returns. Nixon finished with five returns for 172 yards, an average of over 34 yards per. Sadly, the Packers seldom capitalized on the excellent field position Nixon provided. Small steps.

Honorable mentions to Jordan Love, who has rekindled a glimpse of hope for the future, and to linebacker Justin Hollins, who arrived in Green Bay on Thursday, and came up with two big plays, a tackle for loss on Sanders, and a sack of Hurts, running him down from behind.

LAME CALLS

It’s all about the defense

I’m just giving one big, collective Lame Call to the defense. All aspects of the defense. The pitiful effort to stop the run boils down to just terrible tackling. There were so many missed tackles, I’m hard pressed to think of a defensive starter who did not have one. On Jalen Hurts very first scramble out of the pocket, three different Packers missed the tackle, allowing the play to rupture into a 24 yard gain. Hurts faked out Darnell Savage so badly, Savage hurt himself trying to twist back around.

This time the defense can’t use the excuse that the offense didn’t keep the ball long enough to give them any rest, or that the offense didn’t score enough points. Yet Philly was able to run 79 plays compared to Green Bay’s 49. The Eagles converted 8 of 15 times on third down, and two out of three on fourth down.

The defense did have a couple of shining moments. The stop on fourth down in the first quarter was impressive, and the fumble return by Quay Walker should have been a bigger factor in the game than it was.

Another back breaker came in the closing seconds of the first half when Philadelphia had a third and 14 at their own 48. With Jaire Alexander playing ten yards back, Davante Smith was able to catch a 13 yard pass in front of him, enabling the Eagles to convert the easy fourth and one. Three plays later they were in the end zone.

THREE AND OUT

-- I have grown to hate this trend of offensive linemen getting behind ball carriers and pushing them downfield. It doesn’t seem fair. Officials make it worse by holding off on whistling the play dead. It’s already illegal to pull a teammate forward. I wish the league would go back to make assistance from behind a penalty as well.

-- Rough night for Rasul Douglas. AJ Brown beat him for 23 yards in the first quarter, he had to hold Davante Smith to keep from giving up a score in the second quarter, and then did give up a touchdown on a pretty back shoulder toss to Quez Watkins. In the third quarter he lost Brown for another score. Rasul is a battler. There will be better days.

-- So if the Packers were looking for an excuse to sit Rodgers and play Jordan Love, this is it. Oblique injuries can be somewhat slow to heal and definitely impair your ability to throw. Rodgers made a heroic effort to play through it, but taking several weeks off to heal may serve him, and the Packers, well.

There's a reason Rasul Douglas bounced around the rosters of five teams before being picked up by the Packers, and it's not his stellar coverage or ball skills.

He turned a stretch of good games last season into making bank, but as former Giants GM George Young so accurately noted, "I've never seen someone play better because they were getting paid more."

Absolutely right: Douglas isn't a "turn and run" CB. He plays at his best when he's reading the QB and keeping the play in front of him...which means he's going to struggle some on the boundary, depending on scheme. I agree with others when they say he's destined to be a starting S in 2023--and would probably log more snaps there if they weren't shy at CB.

Douglas would possibly have had a run at S now we are done had we still got Stokes. Maybe they like Ballentine enough to give that a go anyway?

First I have to say that It was nice to see Love looking good! We have no clue what the future holds, but we can say with certainty that Love looked like a different QB from the last time we saw him playing a meaningful game last year against the Chiefs. I don't care what defense the Eagles were playing. HIs throws were on point and he had some lasers out there. He was in rhythm and looked really good.

And before everyone comments about they should have traded Rodgers, lets remember that the Packers had seen Love every day in practice. They decided to go with Rodgers for a reason. We aren't at practice to see what he looks like.
Now that being said, last night eerily reminded me of Rodgers - Cowboys game in 2007. Favre gets injured, Rodgers comes in and plays lights out. Gave the Packers confidence to move onto Rodgers the following year. We will see if Love has similar fate, but we may soon find out how good Love is as they may choose to keep going with him as Rodgers is hurt.
And lets give Rodgers some serious props. He is out there playing in a lot of pain.

I completely agree with the choices of game balls/lame calls. These were my picks as well.

Game Balls:
Dillon/Jones - I will add Jones to this because both RB's looked great last night. Dillon looked the best he has looked all year.

Watson - Wow! All I can say is wow. He is so damn explosive! The game has slowed down for him, he is finally healthy and damn he is starting to make a mark in this league.
I can't wait to see Watson and Doubs on the field together!

Nixon - We finally found a return specialist. Its only been 84 years (thinking of that gif typing this), since we have had an actual return game.

Lame Calls:

Defense - Where to start? It's a full circle. And it comes back to coaching. No matter how I want to say this, its coaching. Does Joe Barry deserve to be blamed for everything? No. But there are certain things that you have to do in coaching, and that is to make sure the players are doing exactly what you want. They have to do more to drill to players that they can't be giving up the edge. They have to stop playing nickel when the offense is running the ball down our throats. They have to stop allowing CB's to be playing 10+ yards off the ball. 3rd and 14 and our 2 CB's are playing 14 yards off the ball. WHY? If Barry is giving CB's that leeway, then take the leeway away!

We can't place all the blame on Barry. They had an insane amount of missed tackles. I want to say I saw they had 15+ missed tackles. (I thought i saw 17, but could be wrong).

I just know its time. Its past due. Its time to let Barry go. And go get Jim Leonard from Wisconsin! That is who LaFleur wanted to be running his defense. Leonard would do an amazing job as our DC. I'm sure Leonard is ready to move on as well. Lets make this happen!

Three and out!
- Jenkins getting called for holding on one of the best pancake blocks I have seen this year is fitting for todays officiating.

- I thought it was great last night seeing former Packers QB Kurt Benkert talking about Rodgers interception. He explained why Davis ran the wrong route. Then you have noted Rodgers hater Peter Bukowski blaming Rodgers for it. Benkert responded to him telling him to take his hate shades off, that they were clouding his judgment. I just thought it was great. I wish Benkert was still in GB.

- Rodgers/Love. I get that Rodgers wants to take his time in the offseason and decide if he wants to come back and play or not. He has earned the right. But the Packers need to go to him and say, if you are planning on coming back great. But if you are not we have to find out what we have with Love.
IF Rodgers is going to come back next year then it is more beneficial that he plays to continue to build chemistry with the young WR's. But they should at least give Love a few games to allow Rodgers to heal as well. IF Rodgers thinks he wants to retire, then they need to tell him that they need to find out what they have in Love.
I'm sure its not an easy decision either way, but they really need to start that conversation so they can figure out the best way to go for the rest of the year.

Why does MLF deserve to be our HC anyway? I think it is plain to see that the softness and in-physicality stems from his wimpieness. Fire both Barry and MLF, and hire someone tougher, like Dan Quinn.

I like LaFleur. Is he perfect, no. But I don't feel they need to change from their HC. The offense we knew was going to take a step back, but we thought our defense was taking a step forward. They didn't.

I will blame him for hiring Joe Barry. Joe Barry has one of the worst defensive track records and somehow he still hired him. He wanted Leonard. He offered him the job and Leonard turned it down. Likely in hopes to become the Badgers next HC. The next 2 reported options were Barry and Ejiro Evero. Evero has the Broncos defense playing really well.

Just for a comparison with the Packers and Barry, and Broncos and Evero. Both teams played the Jets. The Broncos allowed 16 points, Packers 27. Both played the Titans. Broncos allowed 17 points Packers 27. I didn't look into each of the games to see how the scores were allowed. But just looked at the scores.

The Broncos have allowed 9 passing TD's and 6 rushing TD's on the season. Packers allowed 18 passing TD's and 13 rushing TD's.

Broncos have allowed on average 17 points per game. The Packers 23. Last year the Broncos allowed on average 18.9 points per game, the Packers allowed 21.3 points per game. Packers are allowing more this year and Broncos are averaging less.

Coaches matter and LaFleur chose the wrong one. Time to make it right. Go hard after Leonard!

Dan Quinn is similar to Wade Phillips...great DC, lousy HC. Both men were promoted to their level of incompetence.

Dan Quinn is making McCarthy this year in Dallas. Apparently MM learned his lesson after Capers D kept the Packers out of a few more Super Bowl games his lackluster, complex, confusing, soft defenses for several years after the 2010 Super Bowl.

Meanwhile, MLF has also risen to his level of incompetence. I would say MLF is a great OC, lousy HC. But the last 4 years he has actually been a lousy OC who may be a good QB coach.

They had to tie the Game up starting the second half. Open it up! Instead, another tedious three and out. The one pick of Rodgers was a nice disguise by the DB stacking in front. The defense was not onboard with Barry's "gameplan."

Oh how quickly we forget the Jets, Lions games.
Bisaccia is the only NFL level coach on the staff. MLF rode the end of Rodgers great career. MLF has shown absolutely nothing this year. He picks terrible assistants, sticks with losers ( Amari) too long and makes no adjustments in game.
Gutekunst is the one supplying the terrible players.

Yes. Packers were 13 win teams 3 years in a row. Yes this year has been a struggle. But there are legit reasons to why they have struggled. You can't place all the blame on him that.

The OL has been a complete mess. The WR corp has been a complete mess. The QB has been playing with a broken thumb since the Giants game and coincidently that is when our offense fell apart.

LaFleur isn't perfect. But to simply get rid of him because of this mess of a season, would be crazy!

This season has shown up LaFleur as a man who adds nothing in terms if leadership, tactical acumen or as an evaluator of either coaching or player talent. He’s absolutely a waste of space and more, a millstone of caution and passivity. If he’s still here we will remain the same soft, lackadaisical team we’ve become. It’s not hard to see why we couldn’t get over the hump in prior seasons. LaFleur doesn’t learn he repeats. He has to go. He’s a guy made by Rodgers and that’s over.

I agree that Lafleur should be canned, but its not for a lack of coaching. He quite literally saved Rodgers' career, which was trending straight down before he was hired. Unfortunately, Rodgers mutineed this team from him just like he did with Mccarthy and now Lafleur has lost this locker room. His biggest weaknesses were not being able to stand up to the bully and hiring terrible assistant coaches. He is an excellent x's and o's coach tho and everywhere he's been his offensive guys have excelled.

Good summation as usual RC.

A few comments about Love/Rodgers. First, I did not see Philly's defense playing off receivers as one would think in a prevent defense. The defenders were strapped all over each receiver on every one of his throws. What stood out to me was how decisive Love was with each of his passes. Virtually no hesitation as we see consistently with Rodgers. Then throw in the arm strength and lasers Love was throwing. I recognize Love is more like Favre being a risk taker, which bodes for more interceptions, while Rodgers has always exercised caution and taking safer throws. There is going to be both positive and negatives with both approaches. My hope for Love is a combination of Rodgers and Favre when it comes to playing style. Rodgers awesomely low turnover rate has been a blessing over the years, but it has also been his achilles heel for quite some time. He has become very indecisive and selective often passing over wide open receivers. The Packers seemingly give up unnecessary QB sacks as a result. I agree we don't have a full picture of just what the Packers have in Love yet, but last night the difference in QB decisiveness was what stood out to me. Just how fast he got the ball out and drilled it in there was so refreshing. Having just turned 24-years of age and being 15-years younger than Rodgers it would appear Love's talent has no where to go but up for years to come. Love is not even close to being a finished product yet. I believe Love's performance last night let the cat out of the bag and he has become Rodgers worst nightmare, which is likely why I read on the internet this morning a quote from Rodgers where he says he plans on playing next weekend against the Bears. I sure hope LF is smart (though question he is) and sits Rodgers as Love needs to play and gain experience, but also because Love is healthy and gives the Packers the best opportunity to win.

Change can be hard!

No blitzing? Even with Love's very decisive decision making and getting passes out quickly did you not see Love being flushed out of the pocket? Maybe because Love was so quick getting rid of the ball is why you feel like you do. Is it really that difficult to appreciate Love's performance?

While admittedly very enthusiastic about Love and his potential I always say....."we do not truly know what we have in Love just yet." The Packers made a HUGE investment in Love and I desperately want him to become a very good QB for the Packers for the next 12 to 16 years. If Love turns out to be a failure it could be a decade before the Packers get fortunate enough to obtain another good QB. Yes, the 70's and 80's are etched into my brain and I don't want to see that again.

There are so many fans on here who appear so reluctant to allow Love to play and gain experience even to see what the Packers have in him. Many of these same fans were reluctant with the young WR's playing this year and wanted Watkins, Cobb, and Lazard being the experienced WR's. Change is inevitable and the Packers need to play the young bucks for experience and to prepare for next year's draft.

I completely agree with you. His decisiveness really stood out. He was playing on time and in rhythm within the offense. I didn't watch the whole Jets game yesterday but kind of reminded me of Mike White from yesterday. The announcers were talking about how White was playing on time in the offense. Love played on time in the offense. He was poised.

You could just tell Love was a much different QB then he was before this game. He had some confidence and looked the part. For the first time in Loves career as a Packer, I think most people can say they liked what they saw and most will likely say they are ready to see more.

I have no clue what Love's future will be. I have no clue if he will be in GB or somewhere else. I have no clue if Rodgers will be back next year. But after last night I felt really good about Love potentially being our next QB. He has some serious skills that really he only needs playing time to get better.

I would add Kingsley Enagbare and Justin Hollins to game balls as well. Enagbare was going up against Lane Johnson, who the announcers said hasn’t allowed a sack yet this year. He has turned into a terrific run defender, and contributed on the 3rd down stop that led to the turnover on downs in the 1st quarter. With time, he could develop into a premier starter. Hollins because it can’t be easy coming in 3 days ago and learning the playbook, yet he still managed to sack Hurts.

Walker had some rough moments, but you can see the potential. With better coaching and more experience, he could become an all-pro.

As much as I've loved him up until now, Jaire is becoming a problem. He seems to spend way too much time practicing his celebrations and not enough time perfecting his craft, he has been beat way too many times this year and yet he acts like he's the no.1 corner in the NFL.
Maybe he's uncomfortable in Barry's scheme but he needs to get back to where he was, before he was the no.1 paid corner in the NFL.

Game Balls:
Nixon--is a keeper. He's been OK playing defensive snaps, but really good in STs and has found a niche as a return man--goes a million miles an hour with his hair on fire. Perhaps more than you could reasonably ask for from your 5th CB.

Watson--freakish speed. Caught that crosser and just ran away from the coverage. Nice pass by Love to hit him in stride, but if that were Lazard or Cobb, it's likely a 20 yard gain. Gotta find a way to keep him on the field. He seems to take more hard hits than you'd like to see. As one tweet said: he's a 'cheat code'.

Jones/Dillon--ran hard all night. Philly has a physical D that plays a beat past the whistle and lays a hit most plays. They likely both needed the whirlpool after last night, but they played well.

OL--playing better every week. The run game was effective, and mostly 12 had time to get the ball out against an aggressive defensive front 7.

Love--admittedly threw a couple high, and a little behind a couple receivers, but I think that's to be expected. Made good decisions, mostly, and moved the offense. I think 12 goes on IR this week and Love gets his chance against some credible, but not elite D's over the next few weeks. This gives him and LaF a chance to run the offense. Looking forward to it.

Lame Calls
The defense--I don't know what to say that hasn't been said. Through the first 8 games or so, I'd been an apologist for this group--because the offense had been so anemic. Not anymore. Terrible, undisciplined play, and a repeat of 2021's ST debacle is starting to brew. Too many young guys who are learning to play the game to allow them to languish in a system that doesn't optimize their strengths, put them in a position to play well, or stress them on their fundamentals. Admittedly, when there are 320 lb OL running free on the second level, it's hard to do much, but something needs to be done to reclaim this unit, and the axe falls at the top, Joe Barry.

Mason Crosby--at this stage, he can't handle KOs anymore, even when the weather is warm. Maybe with this season in the trash can, you just let him play it out with dignity, or maybe you activate your PS kicker and just have Crosby do FGs. Whatever the case, father time is undefeated and we're seeing the last few games of a Packer stalwart.

Savage--demoted and now hurt. He appears to have no future in GB.

I feel Savage (like Stokes) have been misused and untaught by the coaching staff. Can't take speed off this team and improve it at the same time. Amos must feel the same, as he had all the DBs come to his camp this spring on his own hook. Think he's been misused this year too.

I thought this was Dillions best performance. ( This year.) Was he auditioning for Free Agency ? What better way to get noticed. (Then against a top defense.) IMO. - He isn't going to give the PACKERS a Team discount.

Let’s not give too much credit for the stop on 4th down early in the game.. it was a fumbled snap. It is a key reason the packers hung around for awhile.
In reality.. another bad draft for Gutekunst.. our stars on defense are overrated ( Clark, Alexander) and our first round pick is a joke.
Simply put.. discussing players is a waste. The GM and staff need to be fired at seasons end. Gutekunst should not make another pick. MLF head coaching fantasy died with Rodgers finally becoming an aging QB with diminishing skills.
Poor Rich Bisaccia.. the only coach that showed up this year. While it hasn’t been perfect let’s not forget how bad the unit he inherited was.. and I’m sure he was forced to keep putting Amari Rodgers out there.
There is not future in GB with Gutekunst and MLF. Period.

If you are firing the GM, that is Murphy not Gute. Gute holds the title, but he is really the director of the draft and pro player acquisition. The coaches, the salary cap and Gute all report to Murphy making him the final decision maker on football matters (and the de facto GM).

Game: Watson looked like Lofton running a Jordy route. Love impressed getting the passes out on time, throws a nice ball and was mostly accurate. Needed to run even more, both backs were great and the the OL is better run blocking than pass pro. Jones ran a nice route and then improvised as AR hoped he would. Defensively, Hollis set the edge much better than any OLB has all season (Preston should be playing DE). S-wise, Nixon’s the one! Bisaccia should replace Barry immediately.
Lame: This game illustrates the hill I am willing to die on: OL and DL determine who wins the game. The Eagle’s lines are far superior to GB’s.

Actually, I thought the Packer O-line played one of their better games last night. They opened holes in the run game and protected the QBs well. The Eagles O-line is very good, but the Packer O-line held their own.

The D-lines - no comparison. Philly is far better.

Sad, we bring in a reject for another team, he practices like three days and comes in and makes our high paid draft picks look like crap.
Maybe thats the key were not srring. Our guys on defense are so bad that until we get a guy who is very good to play, we cant judge our guys buy.
If we were to bring in a great pass rusher he would expose to us the guys we have suck. Now we would know what a good pass rusher does and what it looks like.
I actually feel for Barry. How do you coach up an Amos, Douglas, Savage with their lack of speed, skills and abilities. His job is impossible

Enagbare is proving to be a steal in the fifth round. He is quickly developing into a solid OLB and will provide the Packers with great OLB depth along with Smith and Gary next year.

Walker is up and down - he was very good in the previous game and looked bad last night at Philly. He only started for one year at Georgia and his lack of experience is showing. He is a good enough athlete that I think he will develop into a good ILB eventually.

Love looked composed and reasonably accurate throwing the ball despite coming in late to a pressure situation. Would definitely like to see him get more playing time.

Gute's 2022 draft is starting to look like a home run. Walker, Wyatt, Watson, Tom, Doubs and Enagbare could all be starters eventually and Toure has interesting potential. Rhyan is the only potential miss at this point and he still could turn it around.

The fumble return by Walker showed his talent. He ran hard through the trash and to the ball, not giving up on the play and was in position to make a big play.

I will say this about Quay, he played hard all night in a game where most of his teammates seemed to be implementing a plan to get a soft, clueless coach fired who they have no faith or confidence in.

At least the rookie Quay competed last night.

I'm not putting all the blame on the D-line for that, especially when he's playing behind Clark. I rewatch running pays that gash our D, and find that Walker is very slow in finding and reacting to the ball carrier. This poor reaction also sets him up for blockers. Yes, his tkl totals are high, but that's after a 4-6 yd gain.

I'm not as impressed by Walker as some. He's fast but not quick. He can't avoid blockers and doesn't seem strong enough to throw them aside like some of the great LBs. Also was supposed to be a guy who doesn't miss tackles. Has missed a ton this year. Campbell last year at least looked faster, stronger and a better tackler.

Having said all that, Walker is young and athletic so with experience he may improve greatly.

Meh, Walker is just a guy at this point. There is nothing about him that differentiates him from the other cannon fodder they've trotted out at MLB the last several years. They still don't understand what the MLB position requires and Walker's inability to fit the run is no different than many of the other players they've had at the position....including Campbell.

Guam,
I believe Quay will become an All-Pro in time. The athleticism and talent is obvious. He is getting baptized by fire this year. You mention he only started for one year at Georgia and with his also having the responsibility for calling the defensive plays it is asking a lot of a rookie. I think as soon as next year after an offseason in the weight room and a full year under his belt we are going to see him take a step or two upwards. Quay has the potential to becoming the best linebacker the Packers have had since the 1960's. Over the years, I have become so frustrated with Chicago's ability to have top notch LB's and the Packers playing with what normally would be considered back-ups on most teams.

A good draft is regarded as one where you get 2-3 starters. Walker and Watson already start; Doubs was starting before his injury; Enagbare is starting now due to injury; Wyatt is a consistent rotational player and Tom and Toure have potential. Getting superstars at every draft choice is not the benchmark of an excellent draft - getting starters and top reserves is. Gute's 2022 draft already qualifies.

Watson - Absolute stud these last 3 games.
Ford - our 2021 version of Douglas. His forced fumble, allowed us to take the lead. impactful play
Enagbare - great find in the 5th round!

On a side note: The Badgers hired Luke Fickell to take over the head coaching job, stepping over fan and player favorite Jim Leonhard.

The Packers defensive scheme sucks. Is there anyone out there to disagree? The Packers put up 33 points against the #2 ranked defense. The problem isn't the offense regardless of who is at QB. It's the defense.

Leonhard interviewed with MLF last year and it appeared he was offered the job as Packers DC then went with his heart and stayed at Wisconsin. With the Badgers season all but over(they likely will get an invite to the Little Johnny's Greasy Burger Bowl) it might be a good time to send Joe B. to the showers and offer Jim the DC job now before other offers come in. Leonhard took a bunch of mostly inexperienced players at Wisconsin and made them into a cohesive unit. He would have some talent to work with in Green Bay.

Leonhard has to decide whether he wants to run his own show on the college level. He'll have plenty of suitors if he chooses to go that route.

Whatever the case, Leonhard hasn't stepped out as interim at UW--and I wouldn't expect him to--and has a bowl game to coach, so those who want him hired now will have to wait.

I would be shocked if new HC Fickell has not already been on the phone with Jim and has a face to face set up in a day or two.

Leonard would thrive under Fickell's 3-3-5 D scheme where Safeties are key, similar to LBs in Leonard's 3-4. Both schemes require outstanding DL play, where Fickell has been a DL Jedi Master.

Leonard stayed in Madison due to his family, especially his wife and ultimately Jim himself. If those sentiments remain, I expect Leonard may stay if Fickell does a good sales job.

Being passed over for the HC job when you've made choices to bypass advancement and stay in town will be a hard pill to swallow. I agree, Leonhard would likely be a good fit with the defense Fickell has run in Cinci, but stepping back into the DC role in Madison would likely be asking too much. I think Leonhard moves on after the bowl game. It's sad, but FIckell is the kind of hire that Barry should have tried to make 9 years ago when he brought in Chryst.

I agree with much of the lame balls and game calls. Dillon finally looked like a power back. If he hits the line with pace and direction he is effective. Still, goes down way to easily on first contact for a big man. Too bad Mike McCarthy and his pad level technology has left the building.

I know everyone wants to fire Joe Barry - he was a bad hire BUT like Pettine and even Capers, Barry is playing a weak hand. For a 3-4 defense, the Packers have one of the weakest D-lines in the league. Both Thompson and Gutekunst failed to draft enough GOOD big uglies to clog the middle and collapse the pocket. We still trot Dean Lowry out there only to watch the line get pushed for 5 yards before the tackling even begins. We made strides to actually get some talent at linebacker but unless we fix the trench, this defense will continue to get pushed around.

Big difference between Philly tackling and Packer tackling, particularly in the secondary. As strange as it sounds, maybe the rebuild needs to start on the defense.

This is what i have been saying all year. Early in the season many said defense was playing good showing 17 points a game as a stat. But they failed to understand that we either played the teams with back up qbs r short handed on Wr's and still got run down by their Rb's.
Agreed Barry takes majority of the blame but some of the players are definitely not playing well to their caliber.(Jaire definitely not playing a Top cb is just one example)

That is so damn disheartening. These guys just can't tackle! WTF? Watching other NFL games it's almost startling to see crisp tackling where ball carriers are stopped and even fall backwards when tackled. And, it's almost a given that we'll yield yardage just shy of what's needed for a first down on third down.

Has Joe Barry put his house up for sale yet?

If Barry remains DC, I will lose any and all confidence in MLF's ability to lead anything of importance. If he makes the decision to let Barry do a "Drayton" all season long, he's an incompetent, toothless HC.

If he gets overruled by Mark Murphy, the self anointed GM, then The Flower is a coward and a yes man.

Need to fire Barry, appoint Gray as interim DC and begin a search for a new DC right now. Gray would be on the list...similar to Leonard auditioning as Badgers HC. McIntosh's search was inspired, landing Luke Fickell.

Who does the search and hire in Green Bay...probably Murphy, sadly. It certainly won't be Gutey although Murphy will insist any new hire was a "committee decision". All BS because he wades in and takes over all the big decisions on the football side. Mark Murphy sucks as a GM. He should stick to sledding hills. Better yet, retire already.

Sad, that is the picture of a man on a $150,000,000 contract, plus endorsements. He has had a great career and legacy. He will be playing next year IMO without any doubt. How could he pass up on his $59,000,000 contract? Nor would he want to go out after a year like this year. He will be back but the question will be where?

My only hope is Love is allowed to play all the remaining games to see what we have. Then if Rodgers comes back that there is open competition next summer and let the best man win.

With "Gut Reactions", The G, B and U, and Game/Lame all within 12 hours of SNF, I'm not sure what to add.

So, some other reactions:

I agree that the Olinemen-pushing-the-ballcarrier play has to go. It's an ugly new wrinkle. 30-plus years ago, it was fun and innovative to see Refrigerator Perry line up in the backfield to throw a lead block or to carry the ball. This new trend is just an eyesore.

Quay Walker lacks polish and experience...and most likely, good coaching...but I think he'll be a very good player. Not every LB enters the NFL like a Lawrence Taylor, Luke Kuechly or Bobby Wagner. He'll be okay, I think.

On the first interception, I like that AR dodged a sack and tried to make a play. It was third-and-long, and at most, the play cost us 10 or so yards of field position. What I didn't like was that for all the kudos the Oline received, there were at least 3 plays where the Birds' pass rush came almost untouched right up the middle.

Nixon is a lot of fun to watch as a return man.

As a huge AR fan, I truly hope this wasn't his last game of the season, let alone of his career in GB. I get that he's been controversial , but he's also a gamer, has played well enough over the years (regular season and postseason) to have won several Super Bowls and frankly (though I won't argue vociferously against Brady) is the best QB I've ever seen in a lot of years of watching the NFL.

Give credit to Love and that part of the coaching staff -- he looked good and decisive out there, and threw a good ball.

There is absolutely no reason to let Aaron Rodgers hit the field again this year. I don't care if he "Checks Out OK" or not.

The Green Bay Packers need to see what Jordan Love can do the last 5 games of the season. Five games would be a decent sample size to make a decision on this kid's future. Gutey made his bed and whether he short-sheeted himself or not, we need to know if Jordan Love can ball or not.

On the flip side, how can you sit a guy who is being paid 22 percent of your cap?

At this point, I hope Aaron plays Sunday against duh bares. I think Love can beat duh bares, which doesn't actually help us in the scheme of things, unless we win out and miraculously sneak in a "Wild Card" spot, which isn't likely.

Gutey has positioned himself for the biggest damned if you do/damned if you don't in the history of the Packers.

Barry has lost this defense. Barry has no answers for anything. Ever.

The Packer Fan in me wants us to beat duh bares every time we play them, no matter what. Despite Barry and our defense, I believe we win Sunday no matter who plays QB.

Luv "duh bares" reference, I should have trademarked it...

I think the Rodgers-Love damned do or dont is a second place finisher to Favre-Rodgers. Favre meant more to the Packer franchise than AR has, he brought it back from the NFL scrapheap. The situations are eerily similar though...

Even with this crappy defense I think its possible to win out...to go into Philly and play offensively like that was pretty good...to play like that defensively...well I can't even imagine they would play that horrible again especially against lesser teams...

I could see Justin Fields putting up Barry Sanders/Walter Payton/Adrian Peterson level rushing numbers on this defense.

Game Balls: Nixon, Dillon, Jones, Watson, Ford and Enagbare.

Lame Calls: Run defense, if it wasn't for bad tackling we wouldn't have any. Rasul Douglas, Amos, Clark, Lowry and Walker.

Love looked good during his short time in the game.

Would love to clean house after the season but Gute and MLF have just been extended so I doubt that will happen. However at least we should chuck Barry and probably everyone on the defensive staff. Our pass defense was not very good last night. There were only saved by the fact that the Eagles didn't' need to throw much because the run defense allowed 363 yards. Packers need a total defensive makeover, starting with the coach, attitude and physical players. This BS with the defense has been going on since the 2010 SB victory. It's frustrating, its inexcusable and it's embarrassing. Long overdue to build a real defense and with an actual NFL level DC and staff. Thanks, Since '61

There should be buyout clauses somewhere in the Management Team's contracts. Realistically, Gutedkunst has been around the office since 1998. As with the Badger culture, time for a new Vision. The Thirty Year's Plan has run it's course.

Ahhhhhhhhh!
That feeling of a perfect Fall day, the smell outside after a Spring rain or Summer BBQ, and in today's case, having closure on 2022 playoff elgibility with a sprinkle of top 10 draft slot to boot. As a fan, I feel R-E-L-A-X has taken on a whole new meaning on this frosty November morning.

--Week 12 and we FINALLY see Dillon being utilized in the pass game like season's prior.
--With the exception of leading his receivers better on throws, Love was fantastic. Being a 4 life path, he is all business, no bullshit.
--Us fans have clamored for change with the obvious for weeks, months, and yes, a few of us stout no-nonsense prognosticators for years...each game this franchise peels back to reveal another layer of incompetence as they hang themselves. I'm thrilled to see the majority of CurdNation take off the beer googles and unite demanding a better product and execution on the field.
--Is it just me, or is RCB the only CB position Douglas has shown any competence playing? I posted a few times last off season that packaging him with Rodgers & Adams to Denver for picks galore + Jeudy & Surtain was the move they needed to make; if there's one thing this franchise excels at (other than blowing smoke up their own asses), it's failing to sell high.

Now, THAT'S a damn good post Dragon!

I think every shareholder that can make it to Green Bay for the next Shareholder meeting should attend and greet the officers with the loudest chorus of booooo's ever heard in Lambeau Field and keep it up until they realize that they will not be able to hold their self=congratulatory little love-fest and they leave the stage still being driven from the platform by derisive catcalls from the shareholder crowd.

Raise hell, Texas style!!!

And while they're at it, make a motion to lower the cost of a beer at Lambeau...for a drinking state notorious for alcohol consumption, way too high to be in the middle of the pack, yet 52% above the bottom 3

Looks like the price of a beer is the only thing preventing the Philly crowd from tearing apart their own stadium in an alcohol induced frenzy...

Agree with everything but your opinion on Rodgers. Love threw some nice passes, up to Jones. But the OL turned him into a Robot. His throws became hurried! His pocket awareness broke down.
The WRs are improving. And I want Rodgers to keep putting pressure on them. And this OL! If Love starts; you'll focus on Love, and not the team.

No- you want Love. Not a good team. Love equals Rebuilding! There are other problems with this team.
And this team is divided! Too much time was invested in Love,( in the pre-season.) Players want $$$$.
They must fix the OL; for any QB to throw the ball! The IOL is a problem. Watch Myers closely. Not Love.
TT knew he needed 2 centers. Myers needs to be pushed. I hope they try Tom. Bahk will be here next year.
Gutey could draft a Qb, and that would be a bigger mistake this draft. (per#1 choice)
Even if you dump Rodgers. He'll draft one high. They have to pay Rodgers. Love may stay 1 more year.
But Rodgers cannot sit. There is Too much riding on the packers future now.

Finally somebody mentions meyers.

i thought i was the only one who saw his struggles on a game by game basis. he4 gets out and makes a block now and then. that gets teams killed. centers need to do their job on EVERY play. Consistency starts in th middle and Meyers has been consistently inconsistent and in a bad way, he shrinks when the play is needed the most. He absolutely sucks on third downs.

sheesh, we coulda had Creed Humphrey.

The consensus number one center in the draft and gutey out-thinks himself and takes Meyers over creed. What a boneheaded move.

couldn't agree more i did mention this before that Gutey whiffed playing cute and also mentioned IOL struggles plus rookie receivers not a good recipe same thing happened in 2018 and this year as well. Our success will start from a strong Oline.

Then KC bagged Trey Smith with a low pick. A guy who was rated a one pick since his freshman year @ Tennessee. Injury pushed him down the charts, but you have to stay with these guys and follow their paths.
Trey Smith vs Newman, you make the call?

Did you see Rodgers body motion for him to hike it? Meyers waited until the DL got set several times. And yes Humphrey was the better pick.

The Bad: my anger is no longer at Berry he is who he is we have known that. Lafluer should be fired for hiring him at this point. Joe Berry is one of the worst d coordinator in the history of the nfl that is on lafluer both need to be handed pink slips today.

Quay walker is not being used correctly and when he is he is good so I blame lafluer for this. I was to young to remember the 80s but I get now.

This organization is a pathetic joke from top to bottom only guy that should ha e a job today is bissaci.

Screw this team losers

How many tackles did Barry miss?

His players being terrible deflects some of the blame he should be getting.

The under performance of this defense can result in only one thing... Barry's removal.

As the saying goes... you can't fire the whole team... so the coach has to go.

In this case, barry certainly deserves to be cut loose, but the new guy needs to be told job one is to place the players in their best position and scheme to succeed, then the players get held accountable. Weed out the guys on scholarship and the marginally talented and then build it back up.

There is another job starting tomorrow...

They said if Hurts would have ran 17 more yards it would have been an nfl record for a QB in a game. And this was what game 11 when people should be very coached up and playing near their best.

Good: Watson, Love, Jones, Dillon. Maybe Nixon/Ford
Bad: Defense The talent has fallen off the chart.
Ugly: Coaching, The entire organization.

Where’s the commitment to Excellence in all aspects of the Organization?

Here's what I 'd like to see for the rest of this season:
Jordan Love at QB.
Let (improving) OL fire off the ball and hand off 30 times a game. Minimum.
Let Love dink and dunk off play action. Take on occasional deep shot (Watson!)
On the other side of the ball ---NO chance we'll see a Lombardi-type defense, but how about we return to the "bend but don't break" days.
Win 3 Division games: Bears. Lions, and let's steal one at home from the Vikes just to finish strong.
And then get ready for THE most important off-season maybe in the history of the franchise.
Really.

Rewatching the game so I can stop and start. Lowry is simply awful. On Hurts' second long run in the 1st quarter, Barry has Lowry lined up in a three-man rush with no one on either side of him for three yards. Hurts must have looked at that and thought I can run my entire family through there. As easy as pushing a stroller, Lowry is shoved aside, and there's no one within ten yards of Hurts for the next 30 yards. Then on the 1st TD, they go right over him and he's flat on his back in the end zone.

Lowry is pushed, shoved, flattened... and yet Barry keeps inserting him in there? You're playing a 3 man front and one of them is Lowry? They're running down your throat and you don't make any adjustments?

Barry is clueless. As my dad used to say, "You can't argue with stupid."

I continue to think there is talent on this defense but Barry is playing checkers with chess pieces.

1. First, this was game 11 and our tackling and pass d isnt any better then game one. No improvement since week one.

2. Second, Rodgers goes into a shell once the tosses a pick. Then its screen passes galore for no yards and runs. Hell no he aint throwing it down field and what have another embarrassing interception. This isnt about winning but about saving face and not looking bad. AKA playoff games.

3. Run game is an enigma. Every other game its good. No consistency.

4. Barry had no defensive HC experience and was strapped with Savage, Amos, Douglas, Stokes and a jive ass Alexander who thinks he is the best corner in football and cant tackle or cover that well. Highest paid corner in football. WHF

This team lacks talent accross the board.

Well he has "The Leader" of the team who shoved him how true stars and huge paid players should act: It is never my mistake! He got the lesson from the best in the field, you know GOAT (uh, pardon, not that GOAT with initials TB) of manipulative persons. And what you'll ask more from the other players to follow, if not their "Leader".
