Gut Reactions: Packers crash back to Earth against Giants

Aaron gives his gut reactions from the Packers loss to the Giants.

  • All three phases contributed to this loss.
  • Jordan Love was way too erratic to start the game.
  • Tough night at the office for Keisean Nixon.
  • I think Jayden Reed getting in the end zone early on that run gave LaFleur some unrealistic expectations about its effectiveness going forward. It's clear it was a major part of the gameplan and something they undoubtedly worked on all week (hell, they opened with almost the same play to Reed they opened with against the Chiefs) The Giants did a nice job of adjusting but LaFleur just kept trying to go back to the well.
  • Absolutely loved Malik Heath getting redemption for the dropped touchdown on the very next play.
  • This team really, really missed Christian Watson tonight.
  • Love leading the team to a late lead only to watch the defense give it up was very 2008.
  • Joe Barry had his guys lined up on the New Jersey Turnpike for much of the game.
  • That last defensive drive basically laid out a red carpet for the Giants to march down the field.
  • The defensive front that was so effective the last two weeks was an undisciplined mess tonight. Rashan Gary in particular kept flying past the quarterback and leaving wide open rushing lanes.
  • This is EXACTLY what we talked about on Transplants this past week. This team is nowhere near consistent enough to feel like they are going to go on some magical run. They can beat anyone and be beat by anyone.
  • Tough turnaround to take on the Bucs at Lambeau. Hopefully the Packers can get Aaron Jones, Jaire Alexander, Christian Watson and a few other guys back on the field.
  • Go Pack.

Not too long ago, in the recent past, we have seen this type of play that had them at 3-6.

The last three wins have lost some of its glimmer, watching how those teams are playing lately.

Playing down to your opponent is never a good thing.

There wasn't much good outside a couple-few plays.

Just when they thought they moved IN (playoff house)they're trying to evict themselves.

The giants had the game, and then they fumbled it away.

Then Barry said, 'Hold my beer, this won't take long.'

Then they got themselves 'DeVito'ed.

"Then Barry said, 'Hold my beer, this won't take long.'

Ain't that the truth! But MLF had us in a position to burn off more clock. Could have been avoided. All the 2nd down shots at the end zone were shades of the recent past.

They had to get the TD. The 2 pt conversion play was preposterous. When that failed, I knew we were in trouble
with Barry manning the fort.

Nixon must learn that he does not have to always run with the ball, whether it's from the 5 yard line after a punt or a dropped fumble when he should have just fallen on the ball. He must also leearn to tackle with his arms, not his ass. Love seems to have had his 3 weeks of fame, back to reality for him. Sweep plays work but not on every drive. DeVito is a bum, yet the Packer D made him look like a future HOFer. Oh, and there was no wind at the stadium, Love is just, well, Love. It is so obvious that the intelligence level of the Packers is so low.

Tough night ? If that isn't sugar coating I don't know what is. Nixon has to go. Reminded me of 2014. That level of stupidity is astounding. Awful coverage and horrible tackling effort throughout but the muff fumble run. Embarrassing. No place here anymore for that nonsense. I pray.

Has to go is such a hot take. He is a leading returner. It is clear the coaching staff has told him to stop running kicks out from the end zone. He stopped. He got benched from any further returns after his idiot fumble. I think he will get that message too. But let a leading returner go? Not a good idea.

Packers returned to beating themselves again as they did early in the season. They found a way to lose this game. They were also out coached and outplayed.

They made DeVito look good. This game just proves the Packers still have a long way to go. They should have won this game easily but they played down to their opponent's level.

Let's see which Packers team shows up against the Bucs next week. Thanks, Since '61

This game was a team not prepared to play. More than that, it was LaFleur getting way too cute and then in a rut while the OL got manhandled by a poor DL. For weeks we’ve been hearing how this OL had improved and so has the D, well no, both are exactly as billed and so are their coaches. Today it just came back to bite. Nothing, however, was as appalling as Barry coming out playing 10 yards off on the last drive. Handing them the game.

This is just a repeat of the LaFleur years. No Rodgers or Adams but the same old flaws.

I know these things happen, and I try to brace myself, but it still really, really hurts (so much so that I'm a little disconcerted about how badly I am bothered by a Packers loss).
I hope the players and coaches are upset, as well, and channel it into winning three or four more games this season.
***
Some solace in the resiliency of Jordan Love and the rest of the Packers.
Hooray for Malik Heath for his super touchdown grab in the clutch.
I'm wondering what happened to our pass rush, which was exasperatingly ineffective.
***
No way am I giving up on these Packers.
Keep fighting all the way through to the very end, and there will likely be good results.

What happened to the pass rush? DeVito eluded almost all the pressure they created, and made some very good plays. I want to know how many of them started with more than 2 down linemen. Or had a dedicated spy.

It seems we both want to know how much of the lack of pass rush was due to the good play of DeVito, and how much maybe to the scheming of our defensive coordinator, Joe Barry.
***
I'm interested to get observations and opinions as to whether Barry is mostly helping or holding back our defense.
My major question: Do we keep Barry or let him go as of Monday?

Another Joe Barry gem. Another game with an opponent getting 200 plus yards rushing. Allow a rookie QB to drive the field in the last 1:30 without having to make an under pressure clutch throw. How many times do we need to watch this movie before it gets removed from the DVD player and ash canned?

Dude has clearly got to go. I'm not angry and am sure he'll land on his feat somewhere but you can absolutely put zero faith in this D to stop a drive when they absolutely must.

Man, will we ever be able to keep a 3rd string qb from looking like a perennial pro bowler?

What’s with Whalen’s punts tonight? Don’t think he ever pinned them back. Two were around 25 yards…the first resulting in a penalty on Ford who had be idea the kick was do short. Next one caused a Giants turnover. Go figure.

Perhaps we can tone down the Reed-arounds and the double and triple reverse passes. We’d have been so much better off just handing off.

I totally blame this loss on MLF:
1. Predictable play calling. Guess what we are going to do on 1st down? What happened to creativity?
2. Let's run the end around play how many times? Where is the fake to the RB and pass play?
4. Poor clock management. Teach...no demand and remind your players to get out of bounds! Remind them again and again until they do it in their sleep.
5. Wipe the worried look off of your face and if necessary stay angry the whole game! Leaders don't wilt!
6. Barry defense does it again. How many games does the bend but don't break have to cost you?
7. Following the same recipe for How to Lose to Teams You Should Beat again.

Counterpoint:

had the offense executed the plays MLF called, it would have been fine. That lasted for all of the first 3 plays.

Trying to turn around a bad game like this with complicated plays is questionable judgment, but at least he tried something. That's more than can be said for JB.

Packers' rush D actually made a 3rd string QB the leading, and a prolific rusher...just to make sure the entire NFL world knows on prime time the Packers are not coached in how to defend against a football player who runs with the football.

If the offense has an off day, it's delusional to think Barry Ball will pick up the slack.

What is this...the 4th game the D gave up a lead to help lose?

Reminds me of Bob Sanders D when Rodgers took over. If the game was close, it was never close enough.

At least MLF is justifying his decision to keep Barry for "consistencies sake." Barry is consistently ineffective as a DC. It is akin to defending the Nile Virus with a chain link fence.

Probably not. He is mostly a highly paid OC with a HC title. Based on the decision to keep the incompetent Barry and promote Rich B to assistant HC (for what reason) as STs are now again a net negative, most HC's would be gone by now.

The Giants are not a good football team, as their record reflects. But tonight they out-coached and out-played the Packers. And DeVito was hands down the better QB. Love is an average QB at best, and the Packers are a .500 team at best. Which is good enough for Lombardi Avenue and good enough for Packer fans.

Just when MLF had been almost redeemed, he lays a 'not prepared' egg again. Yes, we have a ton of injuries but this was self inflicted. There is something just not right that the Packers under MLF have done this too many times. How many guys went out drinking in NYC last night? (I'm serious!)

While JL didn't revert all the way back to early season poor targetting, he was certainly not the same guy who we saw these last few weeks. Too much pressure? Cold weather? Ok, it's his first season but we get to complain when this happens.

And the soft defense... I just can't take it anymore. Who is Barry going to blame this on?

I'm glad I decided not to spend 4 hrs in the cold at the game. That would have been a miserable ride home.
So the balloon pops and we are left with some good players and hope for the future. But back to little confidence this coaching staff could pull it all together. OTOH, we do have a lot of injuries. Hmmmm. Too many beers. GN.

Ok, well, we, as diifficult as this may seem, just made Jersey smell worse. Love had a bit of deer in the headlights in front of the packed house of drunken new yorkers ....decaf for him from now on pregame, The defense managed zero sacks against a team. whose qb has been on the ground for a majority of the season. They allowed 24 points to a team averaging 8 a game at home. The kid from Iowa, Van Ness looks completely lost out there. Nixon had a really rough night . why in Gods name was Campbell in deep coverage agains a guy that runs a 4.5 40?? Looked like a replay of smith covering Adams in the raiders game. Offense tried to get way too cute....if you cant run the basic shit, why add more wrinkles? LaFleur was frustrated and the young team saw it and reacted to it. Special teams is still nothing special Missed FG(which cost us) missed 2 point conversion, and a muffed punt. Unlike all the pundits, I still think Barry needs to be gone, no way the team should have given up the points at the end. We will continue to grow, but playoffs or no playoffs, this tree needs pruning this off season With all the picks spent on defense the past few years, we need to be better on that side of the ball. Pick it up and get back at it. GOPACKGO!!

My gut reactions.
- The first half was a mess of mistakes. The whole team, all three phases.
- Defense played five man fronts, but the pass rush could not contain Devito. Sad.
- The Giants started to make adjustments in the second half and Barry's defense had no answer.
- When Love is throwing long, many times he take a little hitch and makes him underthrow. He is actually late to the route.
- The Giants hung around because of all of the Packers mistakes. And yes, they sure can lose to a team they should beat.
- Will the Packers play better next week?

Obviously Martindale ( unlike Barry and MLF ) makes adjustments.
And it’s on MLF for leaving Nixon out there. He was a liability all night.
And they can’t beat anyone. They can’t beat the fucking Giants that’s for sure. Matt LaFluer isn’t a good enough coach to beat Daboll or Martindale. That’s obvious.
Imagine this young team with the NYG coaching staff??
I predict 7-10. And unfortunately the entire staff returns in 24 and we will improve to 9-8, because of the last place schedule.

We all know that this team is a lot better when they start strong and have a lead especially the D.... that being said I blame this loss on Love. He came out looking like crap for the first quarter which set the tone for the rest of the game. Even later in the game he was only playing mildly better, he played a lot better the last few weeks. Not saying he is a bad QB but I feel that this game was on him. MLF had a good game plan at first but execution was poor. This game would not have even been close if Love was throwing accurately in the first quarter.

MLF stated when you play poorly in all 3 phases, you are going to lose. I would say that there is a 4th phase, and ask the coaches if they gave their best, ESPECIALLY at the end, in the 4th quarter.
* Jordan was rough early and had Toure in the end zone, but again late with the pass and our WR did not high point the ball.
*Were we over-confident?
*Defense played ok to start, but tired after continuously getting us the ball back. No sacks for our dline and allowing this QB to run was a problem though.
*I do believe we missed Watson and Aaron Jones as Nagler states
*I felt like there was effort here, just not focused...like they were tired.
*When Jordan was off, missing passes, why do we abandon the run game? It was working fairly well.

Very exciting game.
So what if Love spent the night in Rodgers pent House.
The Crown didn't fit? But the talk did.
The refs controlled the start, to the finish, perfectly.
And didn't you just know; that missed FG would haunt them.
Also MLF taking the ball out of Loves hands, on the 2 pointer.
The packers missed Stokes and Alexander. Why draft a CB?
And for all those times Watson gets double teamed.
Obviously we don't want to look like the dolphins..
So lets just say we missed are money players.
And hopefully they finish 8 and 8 as predicted.

Defensive (Wins Championships)
1. To allow a backup QB to get MVP votes is ridiculous (Joe Berry schemes are embarrassing)
2. Pass rush needs to understand passing lanes and not lose outside contain
3. Soft Coverage, Soft Coverage, Soft Coverage
4. Making a stop when the game is on the line (Giants went right down the field)
5. Way to many high draft picks to play this poorly

Offense
1. Play Calling (no more trick plays)
2. Wide Receivers need to run better patterns especially running passed the line to gain.
3. Reed is not a RB (2 point conversion should have been different play with the same look)
4. Love fumble and INT was his fault and continues to struggle with the deep ball
5. Matt, if you're reading this the middle of the field is always open and the screen game works
6. Turnovers win games and tonight it cost us both times

Special Teams
1. To many penalties
2. What was Nixon thinking on the fumble and why was Reed not back there?
3. Carlson needs to be better makes the field goal we Win

They can beat anyone and can be beat by anyone, including themselves; they managed to prick their own balloon with this incredibly sloppy performance.

Seriously, some of these guys need to be skipping down the Yellow Brick Road to see the Wizard for a brain. Like Taylor, who decided not to go out of bounds. Like Love with his inexcusable first half turnovers. Like Nixon, who wasn't satisfied to just fall on the ball after his muff. MLF may strongly want to consider conducting some kind of "Awareness" seminar for his team...attendance is mandatory.

But no wizard or deity can help Barry. Only he can allow some cult hero QB to look like a Pro Bowler, not to mention giving up over 200 yards on the ground at more than 6 yards a clip. Ever consider a spy at some point after Devito has gashed you big time? And how on earth did we not manage to record a sack against this team? Unbelievable. But the worst was the final Giants drive. After the offense persevered to take the lead, THIS is what he came up with? It was worse than a punch to the gut; it was a knockout blow that cost us a probable win.

Once too many times to the well on the Reed two-point conversion attempt. This is a time where MLF needed to have a creative play stored in his back pocket.

Trying to find some good here, the efforts by a couple of our wide receivers were admirable. Wicks made a nice adjustment on a sailing ball in the first half. Both Wicks and Heath were able to make big plays by stretching the ball out, but in the proper place as to not risk a fumble. Dillon and Kraft had nice catch-and-runs.

I know the Packers are a young team and all, but this is still a very disappointing loss to a Giants team that, to be honest, is not very good with the exception of a few individuals. And it is almost unbearably frustrating that we're still dealing with the same run defense problems game after game. How long have we been dealing with this issue--the better part of a dozen years?

They awareness seminar needs to be attended by Gutekunst. If he brings this staff back the will be 8-8 at best , like Forest Gregg . MLF is sub par without a HOF QB.
He could never do what Daboll did tonight. Never!

I'm tired of these Bozoes. Special teams has stupid penalties of running into receiver. DBs can't cover a wideout w/o holding them for 10 yds. That's after Barry, the defense genius, has a soft cover of NY's WRs as a prevent defense that prevents nothing. When are these coaches going to get in the face of these bozo players who weekly make stupid mistakes and bring this team down. If Carlson hits his FGs like he's PAID to do, we win. Love came out like a scared rabbit and missed his WRs early in the game. Barry's defense is putrid, there's not a DB covering a WR for 7 yards. Dump this crap and pick up some coaches who demand accountability and players skilled enough to win! Lots of soul searching being done on that short NY to GB flight!

Offense was off. Love missed too many open throws. Love finally found his fastball in the 4th and it was good enough to get a lead even with the quirky play calling: Two failed jets sweeps so try a third? Hey Matt...the Giants prepared for that...stupid is as stupid does.

STs have regressed under Rich B...and tonight the most penalized ST bunch in the NFL complimented that stat with stupid play with or without a penalty. SMH.

Defense was as advertised, expected and anticipated in giving up another lead and a loss.

Huge NFC defeat.

They looked exactly as what they are… a team with a below average coaching staff.
If Gutekunst is smart he will not let this staff cost him his job in 2025.
Find the staff you want, and kick these clowns to the curb.. or else get used to 6-8 win seasons.

Gutey has absolutely no say on the coaching staff. Acting GM Murphy grabbed that power in 2017. It will not be pried from him until he gets the gold watch after next season.

I think we saw tonight the difference between the coaching staffs of the NYG and GB.
Does anyone think MLF could win three in a row with Tommy DeVito?
The giants have a shitty roster and will end up winning more games than GB.
Worst part? This staff will be back next year, Love will be average, Watson will be hurt, Dillon will have two good games, the o line will suck.
You can almost see them fighting to finish 8-9 in 2024.

Neither team really deserved to win.

Packers punt the ball, the ball hits a Giant player who seemingly is unaware he's playing football, and the Packers recover.

Barkley bust a 34 yarder for a potential game clincher, then fumbles the ball, and what does he do?
He doesn't move, he just watches Valentine pick up the ball and run, like most of the other Giants players.

Whatever happened to, you play until the whistle blows?
I mean, holy shit, this is the NFL right?

The skill of the game i saw, was just not entertaining.

It was the comedy of stupid errors which actually kept me entertained.

It was ugly, whether you were a Giant, or Packer fan.

The one thing i'm certain of.....
Is the party they are having at the Devito house tonight.

Just in time for Christmas! Doom!!! Is it possible for the NFL to assign both teams a loss for this crime against football? Well sports fans, do the Packers continue to feature Dillon as RB1 despite him having the grace of a walrus? You bet! Do they continue to run plays the opposing defense successfully adjusted to in the second quarter? Absolutely! Does the defense chase the Italian sandwich man like Boots Randolph's Yackety-Sax is playing through the stadium loudspeakers? Doubtless. There is no escape. You have entered the stupid zone!

Even on the rare occasions that Aaron Jones is available, he is not a RB with great speed. It seems like all the good teams have a RB who can get to the hole or outside very quickly. The Packers do not a RB with that ability. They need one.

Alexander is rarely available. When he isn't hurt, he is not a playmaker. I always remember Reggie White saying that guys need to make plays. The Packers need alot more playmakers on the defensive side of the ball.

I'm skeptical that Watson will ever be able to stay on the field. The NFL is alot more physical than North Dakota State.

it will take some time for the Packers to recover from the disaster that was the Aaron Rodgers extension. I still can't believe they did that.

However, Packer fan forever

I agree that Watson’s injury status is frustrating, although I don’t buy the N.D. State argument. Kraft is from S.D. State (same conference)-as is Dallas Goedert. Bryce Paup (and former DPOY) played at Nothern Iowa—again, same conference. There are a host of NFL players from that conference, including many from NDSU. Some get hurt, some don’t.
Watson is hurt too often.

Defensive backfield is schemed to play soft so making plays is harder. That's on Barry. However everybody said the D line would light up the stat sheet last night. Instead they were shutout on sacks and in the end gave up huge ground yards. That too could be chalked up to Barry not adjusting the rush schemes as the game developed. The offense was missing two playmakers. The D failed to pick them up.

I was prepared for a win…and then this?
And this wasn’t a “trap” game as suggested throughout the week. It was a dumb loss due to a sloppy team committing silly and stupid mistakes—not able to overcome an inferior opponent.
I wonder what the collective IQ is among Joe Barry, Nixon, and Taylor?; add others if you choose.
Go Packers!!!

If they started poorly because they stayed out late last night and were still hungover arriving at the venue, that fits the idea of a trap game perfectly. They executed the first 3 plays. What went wrong after that we don't really know, but they unraveled.

What a terrible game. MLF should have just walked to the centre of the field and dropped his pants pooped, it would have been better than the turd they laid

Sometimes I wonder if the Packers are some perverse NFL version of the Make a Wish foundation - where they gift the most unlikely people superstardom for the night!

"I'm a UDFA RB and want to be Barry Sanders for the night" - done! next.....

"I'm an UDFA [but connected :)] QB who wants to be just like Tom Brady" - done! next

"I'm and out of form O lineman, but need to up my PFF run protection grade so I don't get cut" - no sweat, we got this!

"we'd like to come back from 2 scores down with 30 seconds to play" - too easy!

Disney can't even write these scripts!

Well, this was a classic, “playing down to the level of the opposing team.” The sloppy play by both teams was stunning even if it was a preseason game, much less Week 14 of the regular season. That the offense was able to score with less than two minutes to play, only for the defense to totally collapse at crunch time makes this more than most fans can bare. Where this team goes from here is anybody’s guess.

I think young teams tend to read their press clippings and these guys came expecting it to be easy. One hopes they learned you earn every win in the NFL. Missing Watson, Jones and Alexander was huge. Unfortunately that seems to be what to expect from those three, nagging injuries that keep them off the field more than they're on.

The "nicest" thing I can say about last night was that this is still a young team that doesn't know how to play consistently at a high level. Their emotions help them win big games against teams like KC and DET. But put them up against a team they should beat, and they stumble. Players and coaches.

So, the young players might have an excuse re: their learning curve. But what about the coaching? MLF is now Coach Gadget to me. Never have I seen so many stupid, lateral plays. Worse yet, the Giants were ready for them after the fifth or sixth time! Talk about a coach who panics when things go badly! And our HC to boot!

And the defense. Vintage Joe Dingle Barry. The 4th 200+ yards game given up this season against a poor offense with a green qb. INEXCUSABLE! Tim Backes said it best when he tweeted that the only person in football (maybe this planet) that thinks Barry is a good coach is LaFleur. That about says it all...

STs. A true liability. Bad penalties. Turnovers. Almost as if they Mo Drayton was still coaching them. Rich B needs to get back to basics, to say the least.

Truly, our expectations got away from us prior to this game. Are they a playoff team? If they are, then by the slightest of margins. But this year wasn't about us going to the playoffs. It was about evaluating, competitiveness, and improvement. These guys still have a lot to learn. The coaches, moreso, unfortunately.

This game, miraculously, could have been won at the end. THE DC IS STILL THE GREATEST WEAKNESS OF THIS TEAM.

Please, please FIRE JOE BARRY!

so how long is this "learning curve" supposed to last?? These guys been playing football forever and the Packer coaches have supposedly taught them something since spring training...13 games into a season and its still learning time?? Nah...some learn fast some never will learn...

We have no coaching. Just when I thought MLF would have a game plan, and we would go into NY and show some pride and fight...

Watching the game with my 17 year old son, I was left with no answer to his comment/questions: Why are we throwing passes to players behind the line of scrimmage when we need a 1st down?.
We have no Offensive line! Though not as devastating, the fumbles and muffs brought back nightmares from 2014. A game we named after a family friend who watched it with us that day and said, "Relax the Packers are going to win this game, it's over". We all know the rest. Last night after the crazy twist, and with what, 4 minutes left, I said to my Son, if we just hold onto the ball , get 1st downs and work our way down field, burn off the clock and score a touchdown we can now actually win this thing! But of course we doom ourselves , leaving ample time for Barry to leave us with a slow agonizing, inevitable defeat. I've been miserable ever since!

Still time to wash the taste of this game away, but at season's end if not sooner Barry has to go. Despite all the blunders, the Offense came back, but our coaches do not know how to preserve a lead or win. That can't continue! Please tell me it can't, someone?
