Gut Reactions: Packers fall apart in the 4th quarter

Green Bay falls to Atlanta, sits at 1-1 on the year.

  • Frustrating game all around.
  • Anyone who was on my daily chats this offseason knew exactly what to expect when it came to the ups and downs of a young team and that certainly surfaced today.
  • Jordan Love played well overall, but definitely needs to figure out how to start quicker.
  • I loved how he got in the defenders face after his big run.
  • Jayden Reed is a player.
  • Tough ask to go on the road without your two best offensive players and a young blue chip talent in Watson, lose Elgton Jenkins during the game, and pull out a win. But the Packers almost did exactly that. There are no moral victories, but I was somewhat impressed with how LaFleur had this team ready to play and how they took control of the game.
  • That said, the 4th quarter was abysmal for LaFleur and Barry.
  • AJ Dillon needs to find his equilibrium.
  • Quay Walker's dropped INT hurts but Jaire's dropped pick six was a soul crusher.
  • Royce Newman held up way better than I expected him to coming in for Jenkins.
  • Zach Tom is so, so good.
  • I've never seen an attempted QB sneak where the QB dives forward while the entire line stays still. Innovative.
  • Jordan Love will get more game winning drive opportunities. I expect he'll learn from today and look improved.
  • Time to regroup and hopefully get a bit healed up prior to the home opener against the Saints next week.
  • Go Pack Go.

"That said, the 4th quarter was abysmal for LaFleur and Barry."

I'm not sure Barry actually was much of a difference in the Bears game as they clearly are a really bad offense, but today was 2022 Barry all over again. The team is young and exciting and will make mistakes, MLF and Barry are old and experienced and it's about time they reduce their mistakes and maybe even learn from them (MLF maybe, Barry is a lost cause).

Barry at one point when the focused in on him in the booth had that look of being in a dark closet. No answer not that he ever makes adjustments. Certainly not the guy, never was. JA proving he is just an average DB, looks like little gun shy to put a shoulder when he tackles. Savage came back to earth , one that got away. A young team that going to haves ups and downs. 11 yards fourth quarter is not going to get you to the playoffs.

Savage got owned a number of times today by Robinson.

Not taking anything away from Robinsons abilities - he's a real talent.

Hats off too to the Atlanta O-line, they really did good work setting up the run.

The ILBs played Robinson like a WR, watching and waiting instead of attacking the gaps. Ford is lost in space. They dropped two INTs which likely change momentum and Jaire had a clear path to the endzone. The offensive collapse in the fourth quarter was inexcusable. Why take the ball out of Love's hands?

Same old soft play calling from MLF...why not go for it on fourth and very short...why, because he never does...he's analytical, or something...no wonder Rodgers did so many eye rolls...this guy know the team isn't going to the super bowl, so does Smith, yet Smith showed his players he has faith in them and took chances all game long...punt and put your gassed and gashed defense back out there....nice call MLF....yah, I dont like him...never liked the choice when they hired him...sorry bout that..

Even though Offense was without key starters, Defense lost this game. Running D got gashed, period. Love had 3 TD's to Ridder's 1 TD and 1 Int. Almost two other Int's. When is that a losing proposition? 211 rushing yds - 84 in favor of Falcons. 27 1st downs to 17, 15 to 4 rushing. 446 overall yds to 224. And probably most importantly 36:15 TOP to 23:45. Running dominance does win games.

Both offense and defense lost this one. Offense can't leave the defense on the field for most of the 4th quarter against a physical running attack. The expected result it what you saw. And defense needs to make the plays...dropped INTs would have been game changers and would have helped the defense get itself off the field.

the offense doesn't "leave" the defense on the field, the defense can't get off the field. the offense may put them back on the field but if they could stop the other team they would then put the offense BACK on the field. defense has to get OFF the field and the offense has to STAY on the field. period.

The Packers offense had two three-and-outs and a four-play turnover on downs over three fourth-quarter drives that gained all of seven total yards. The Falcons, meanwhile, led scoring drives of 75 yards, 44 yards and 66 yards.
Jordan Love threw three touchdown passes, including two to rookie Jayden Reed, but he was 0-for-6 passing and had a false start in the fourth quarter. He threw incomplete on four-straight attempts on the Packers’ final drive.
The Packers defense gave up 446 total yards, including 211 rushing yards. The Falcons converted nine third or fourth downs and gained 27 total first downs.

My hat is off to the offense. Scoring 24, on the road, missing 4 pro bowl caliber players is impressive! Hopefully we'll be at full strength next week at home.

The defense? If this was an example of Barry's new, aggressive defense, I'm underwhelmed. 446 yards and 27 1st downs to a very average team is very concerning. I'm glad he had a nice "bird's eye" (pun intended) view in the booth of Atlanta's 3 scoring drives of the 4th quarter.

Why some fans keep thinking Barry is going to change is truly baffling to me.

I don't think there's much "thinking" Barry will change. I believe most of it is "hoping" he will change because it looks like we are stuck with him for 2023. I hope he will change just like I used to hope Jennifer Aniston would respond to my fan mail.

With a small army of Coaches no one noticed the clock running out on first FG attempt?

A TD drop, settle for 3.

Two “for sure” Defense INT drops (I think they extended drives resulting in points for ATL) were bad.

Barry’s entire 4Q horrendous.

Could have easily been a W on the road.

But you didn't learn a thing after MM.
Giving Gute a free hand has doomed this club.
It has nothing to do with Murphy.
It has nothing to do with Barry or MLF.
I told you right out what is wrong with his drafts.
his cap, his gambles, etc.
History will repeat itself.
Until we get a new GM. Expect failure after failure.
Injury after injury. Firings after Firings. No super-bowl.

Wrong - and why not go to Minnie - STockholder - or have one less beer after a loss. Usually you are not this bad. Now am I in agreement with his handling of AR ? No maybe an earlier move on - but that is 20-20 hindsight. Today is totally on the coaches - poor game calling on the offense - and why are we still burning timeouts on O early in the halfs. And why are we taking ourselves out of field goal range with dumb calls and sacks? And why are we not putting a spy on running QB's and handling those wide sweeps with nobody in sight for 10 yards. And too much bad tackling on D . This loss was on the coaching and bad preparation and a refusal to put the gas pedal down when we have the advantage - which is a Lafleur on offense and the D co-ordinators habit. Dont forget the sure pick 6 dropped and the other drop by#7. But of course you rant about the draft.

You were dead right concerning Bijan Robinson's skill set. When you have chase ILBs, you get gouged. Budda Baker should have been traded for during Summer Session. Savage again mis-playing the deep ball. Gary making a rookie mistake giving up his contain on Ridder's keeper. Cannot sign him until the season has run its course. They will give the management team extensions when Murphy runs out the back door.

Teams often emulate their head coach. MLF plays a wimpy style of football on both sides generally speaking. And when we have the lead, that wimpiness is usually at its peak. He's a soft man, he coaches a soft team. We rarely expand a lead in the 4th quarter. We often can't turn back teams trying to come back. I watch Dallas and the 49ers play defense and think "our defensive roster is as good as theirs, why can't we dictate our terms like they do?" You may blame Barry all you want, but he is MLF's guy, he's a soft D-coordinator for a soft head coach. JMHO.

Sorry Nags- You can’t say Love played well.
When the packers fell apart in the 4th Quarter.
Blame the OL all you can.
But Love didn’t do anything hopeful.
You don’t run without the ball.
And Dillion isn’t B. Robinson.
We still can’t contain the Outside runner.
Or the running QB for that matter.
You bitched about Rodger throwing
To the end Zone! Per Adams.
Yet- Love takes a shot and had Taylor open for a 1st.
So don’t make excuses about blue chips.

Eleven yards on O in the 4th quarter. Eleven. Tough to win with that output.

Zach Tom is so, so good, except when he gives a blitzing LB a clean run to the QB.

This one got away from us, and should have been a W.

Call me crazy, but there is something to be said for being able to stop an opponent from running the football.

"Anders remains perfect! Who whoulda thunk it?"

I would have liked to see him try from 56 yards in the first quarter instead of punting into the end zone for a 21 yard net gain. Nothing tells your team you believe in them like going for it repeatedly on 4th down (Falcons) and nothing tells your team you think they don't have it by avoiding the big test.

I don't think the 3 extra points would have mattered as the Falcons would just have run it in for a TD instead of kicking the FG at the end. But maybe putting your faith in your players pays dividends later.

Too much time on a 51 yard FG may have been the difference. What a waste of a totally winnable game.

Some things we need to admit to ourselves: all of the packers touchdowns came in drives which involved massive defensive penalties. They never once just took it to Atlanta.

Love’s reads were great all game, until they weren’t. And then, they weren’t just kinda bad, they straight up sucked.

MLF came out passing to start the 4th, when he didn’t need to do that. He then never took a deep shot, which is what drew those first two massive penalties.

This team isn’t bad, but it did fail to capitalize on defensive opportunities (really should’ve had those two picks).

Very much looking forward to next week.

Most of this loss is on Matt LaFleur.

Myers has been a problem for all of 2023. Too many mistakes, missed blocks, botched snaps… how does he not have a QB sneak on 4th and 1 figured out?

He didn’t snap the goddam ball.

How do you take a delay of game forcing yourself out of FG range… or, was it out of range?

How do you keep banging your head on the Dillon out of shotgun runs? Or the Dillon pitch outs?

F. F. F. F. F.

Jaire Alexander, CTFB!!!! Do you want GREATNESS? You have to fucking grab it, take it.

Another reason for this loss. -7 dropping a sure Pick 6.

CTFB!!!!

*Thinking through much of this game we need to draft a Marquee WR talent. 100%. The Packers need that higher level of talent badly. Watson being out with his hammy I blame on Watson. CONDITIONING includes hydration & electrolytes management. Be a better Pro, Christian. You’re unavailable. Again.

Your game is speed, Christian, and you fail to take care of your speed? Sounds crazy to me.

An unnecessary and extremely disappointing loss.
We lost to Desmond Ridder—really?
Joe Barry—is he still coaching?
When exactly can we depend on Dillion to make a critical short yardage play? I continue to read that he coupled with Jones are one of the best duos in the NFL—Dillion is plod- plod- plod—fall down.
Reed is excellent.

Doomed by a bad fourth quarter with bad offense, inability to stop the run, and abysmal play-calling from MLF. Three straight hand-offs to Dillon on that crucial second-to-last drive? Come on! And Dillon can't pick up that one yard? I would have gone for it on fourth down if I were MLF, knowing full well that the Falcons were going to continue to ram it down our throats on the following possession. You notice that Smith had no problem going for it when he needed to.

We had better hope Jones misses no more games--or find/use a RB with some slipperiness or elusiveness, because Dillon by himself isn't the answer.

We suspected that run defense could be a problem this season--and here it was. We got chewed up in TOP better than 36 to 24.

Jaire has to come up with that pick six; that would have been the difference in the game.

Was also disappointed by the last drive; we had plenty of time to get in FG position. Throw to the sidelines, get the ball to somebody in space, even a QB scramble and spike it, whatever....just be a little more measured and patient. This is something that definitely needs to be worked on.

Moral victories always suck, but with four major starters out, we almost pulled off a win. I'm still not real happy, though, because this was certainly a winnable game.

It really was, splitpea1. Very winnable but, not with continued poor coaching. MLF is responsible for gaffes in all 3 phases of the game and most of today’s loss.

My first comments of the new season "They are who we thought they were". young team, still learning. Barry out coached while protecting a lead. ML went into McCarthy mode as he allowed the team to take the foot off the gas. Love looked good, if not spectacular, im not going to fault him for the last drive with clock running out Bring on the saints! GOPACKGO

I see some promise in the team. Considering that several players on O were out and we put up 24 points is a positive. The Defense played well enough early, but were clearly gassed in the 4Q and the Offense just did not do anything to help them out.

You have to give Atlanta some credit, they played hard and keep pounding the ball.

In my opinion, In the 4Q the offense should have been dinking and dunking the ball and trying to gain 5 yards a play. It just didnt seem like they had any idea of what to do. I hope that the team learns from this.

I expect some ups and downs, even if a 1 point loss is still a loss, I be alright and ready for next week.

I really thought they'd win when they went up by 12. I was concerned when that lead was cut to 5, and KNEW they punted right away and gave the ball back...BOTH TIMES!

Young team...This is GOING to happen. Especially when you're missing your top two O-Linemen and Top two playmakers (Jones & Watson).

Oh, and Joe Barry for your DC!

Didn't much care for MLF in the 4th quarter either.

This was an ugly loss for the Packers. They had a 12 point lead early in the 4th quarter and they gave it away. The defense failed to stop the run yet again, allowing 212 rushing yards. Too many missed tackles and they lost the LOS for most of the second half. The Falcons had the ball for nearly 13 more minutes than the Packers. That's nearly an entire quarter of more possession time than the Packers.

The offense didn't help either as they disappeared in the 4th quarter and failed to give their defense a break. However they did score 24 points while playing without their 2 best offensive players (Jones and Watson), without Bak at LT and then without Jenkins for the 2nd half.

The game was there for the taking but they gave it up. These types of losses are going to happen with young teams. But I still see some of the same problems this team has had for several years. Specifically the team does not play a full 60 minutes. Either the offense disappears or the defense collapses for parts of the the game. In this game both happened at the same time in the 4th quarter. Just a bad and unnecessary loss in what was a winnable game.

Now the level of competition will improve with the Saints and Lions coming up. Hopefully playing at home will make a difference. We'll see.

The Packers need to get their players back on offense and figure out how to stop the run on defense. Thanks, Since '61

Luke Musgrave auditioning for the "forget me in the 2nd half" role made famous by Aaron Jones.

Not that it matters, but what exactly is Josiah Deguerra doing on the team/taking up a roster spot.

I was reading your press clippings too, Jaire. Very impressive career prior to this week.

Wow Quay.

1. Matching Campbell with Bijan Robinson on outside was my best part of Barry's performance. Can't believe that anyone could have such a good idea. The next is Kenny Clark vs. Justin Jefferson.
2. Working hard for the lead than securing it as much as it gives the opposite effect. I will never approve that approach in any sport. When you made your opponent's legs soft, take care to put him on the floor not run away from him. You can win in such a situation, but not thanks to this approach, but in spite of it.
3. This offense is promissing and has a lot of potential but now it goes as Aaron Jones does. I like AJ Dillon very much but he is not the guy we've expected. I remember him gaining 3 yds only by falling down and I thought it's just a beginning. Now he fights no to be negative.
4. All the teams deal with injuries but in our case it's like a bad dream. We didn't even manage to enter the season with full power. Week by week our IR expands like a black hole. 4 offensive starters were gone and on paper these were the best ones we've had. Also, do you all remember that there is someone like Eric Stokes in Green Bay?
5. David Bakhtiari deserves a separate point. It's been the 3rd year when we still live with the unknown. Every week the same question I am tired of: will David play? Yes, he's great when he plays, even when he doesn't train at all, but he's not playing much. Maybe the whole O-line needs some stabilization, not never ending shuffling, B-plans, C-plans for any occasion. My opinion doesn't mean anything, but I think if they know in what condition he is it's time to make decision. Play or go.
6. Jaire played like rookie.
7. I knew it had to be an up and down season but this lose hurts. We've had it and put the win on a plate to the Falcons. I can't watch this soft, belay plays anymore. I can't stand bend but not break philosophy which turns into bend AND break in reality. They had 5 yds rushing guaranteed every attempt + a long pass from time to time. Don't waste the potential of young guys. Hire a new DC and let them grow, although we are during the season. I was among those fools to believe Barry that things will change. Now there is one change I want to see.

I'm sure LH is going to tell us stopping the run doesn't mean anything. Packers will most likely be in the bottom 3-4 vs the run at the end of this week's games even after playing two middling QBs, to put it nicely.

The top 10 defense dream went out the window this weekend. You don't give up 438 yards of offense against a team that will be looking for a new QB next year.

So playing LT making $92M over four years you can simply decide not to play on artificial turf. Love the old Bakh but seriously if he's not on board with this team move on and get some draft capital.

The offensive play calling in the 4th quarter was terrible. The penalty on the 1st drive of the game was a killer, that possbile 3 points was critical as were the dropped int's. Lot's of things to clean up, playerwise and coaching wis. Thankfully the Lions lost too.

Eight 1st rounders on defense. MLF , the front office are to blame for hanging on to Barry. Barry was the lolions DC when they went 0-16. He should have been coaching high school after that. This is an average team, maybe a hair above. These are the games you have to win to stay in the hunt. Hard to believe, but the Pack is in 1st place, TY lolions.

Never going to advocate for Barry, but he can't catch the ball. Jaire and Quay both had balls hit em in the hands. Both game changers. Big problem with clock management. Last week at the end of the half in Chicago and today on the first possession. Did he not want Carlson to kick the FG? Seems like those points matter. I'm very excited to see what this offense can look like when all the pieces are in. I think the addition of Watson when he returns will open the middle a ton. Hopefully Jenkins is good to go and I guess lucky for us we get a stretch of games on grass for the beer guzzler.

"Jordan Love will get more game winning drive opportunities. I expect he'll learn from today and look improved. "

Anybody remember back in 2008,2009 when all the Favre-first fans were loudly cawing about how Rodgers was a front-running bum who could only win a game if he had a lead and didn't have what it takes to win close games from behind?

I remember. It was ignorant then, and it's ignorant now. This absolutely was a learning experience. Love and the entire offense will learn and grown from this game. These are the types of things they refer to when they say a QB needs to play. See it, experience it, learn from it, and overcome.

Last time I checked, you gotta lose 6 games to go 11-6!! GPG

Overall I've been impressed with Jordan Love. I am concerned that he continues to miss open relievers especially on the long ball. AJ Dillon continues to be a disappointment. As much as I dislike Joe Berry and his defensive scheme the players have to do their job. Gary and Smith were constantly out of position and leaving the edge wide open. The D continues to be terrible against the run. Bad coaching, bad play calling, bad tackling equals what you saw today.

If you told me before the season that Love would have 6 TDs/0 Ints and the Packers would be 1-1 with only 2 quarters of Aaron Jones and 0 of Christian Watson, I would have been pretty happy.

Nevertheless I am annoyed because they blew such a good opportunity today. We all kind of knew this team would have games like this, but it’s still really frustrating to watch in the moment.

Anyway, the quickest way to wash this bad taste out of their mouths is a win in the home opener against the Saints. Go Pack Go

The Falcons did a great job of passing early to set up the run later. They caught the Packers off-balance on some of those plays. Still, the Packers were in control until late. Lots of people are blaming the defense's collapse on Joe Barry, but mostly I think they just got overpowered. The offense's poor performance in the 4th quarter was a big reason for that. This is how run-oriented teams win ballgames.

Nice performance by Jordan Love until the 4th quarter, and then he did nothing. I'm not sure how much of it was his fault, but that last possession was possibly the lamest 2-minute drive I've ever seen. Usually in the situation you can throw a short one just to get the offense into a rhythm, but I think they were all longer passes.

We knew our CBs needed to hold up in coverage today, and Jaire Alexander did not do that. It was the worst game I've seen from him in awhile.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion about that last possession. You need about 35 yards to get in Carlson's range, and you have 56 seconds to get there, albeit with no timeouts. Still, you don't to pick up big gobs of yardage right away, just advance the ball as best you can and hurry up to the LOS to do it again.

Love did admit to screwing up the fourth down attempt earlier where he took responsibility for making the wrong call, resulting in the ball not being snapped and him leaving without it.

I don’t think they go over powered. array could have left 4 DLs and 2 OLbs in the entire game. They could have activated Ford to make that happen and spell relief. They KNEW full well what they were getting into as fare as Atlantas rushing attack. And they could have played the corners Man and had a safety spy the QB and this game would have been won. Dillon is not a relief Back….you leave hi, in ALL game and eventually he breaks a defense….he did it in college with no line to speak of. It’s like Nags said…1st quarter he get 2-3 yard, second quarter he gets 3-4 yards and by 4th quarter he’s at like 5-7 yards.

Maybe Woody and the Jets will decide Robert Saleh is not the Head Coach he expected after the Jets go 0-5 or 0-6 and makes a change.

Then MLF can ask his good pal if he would like to coach a Defense that includes EIGHT #1 draft picks.

Has there ever been a DC who had 7-8 first rounders in his room? It is simply unacceptable to accept Barry's results. All this talent for over 2 years and his teams mostly suck trying to stop the run. Really soft.

I am starting to believe it may not be the players he tries to coach. Geez!

Lol same old Defense like the last yr. Barry should've been sacked 2 yrs ago it self. I said this last yr and same this yr too that Dillon pick seems to be a reach the bruising backs we could've gotten in much later rounds too. Deguara too not much from him these last two games.
Oline did good even without couple of our probowl Oline men gave ample time for Young love to make some good throws. Love played good but seems to be having deep ball issues and also missed wide open Doubs and instead he threw to other side of the field.

Pos defense again. Same shit different year. Don't remember one three and out. Did see jairre jive assing around and looking the fool except he got the big money and doesn't give a shit anymore. Talk about over rated bs

I bet I could out run Rashad lead ass Gary.. if this team resigns him to a big contract the fans should boycott the games..the guy was never that good except in the eyes of a few fans.

Dillon isn't scaring any d's. He is a big slow goon. Jones is hurt again gee what a shocker. Other teams are sporting fast speedy rbs, Dillon is neither. He serves no purpose at all.

Love has looked solid until the 4th. He isn't seeing the field and missed three huge ops that could have changed the game. By now he shouldn't be missing deep outs by a mile.

Yes young team with promise but where are the play makers on d. No pro bowlers on this team yet.

Watching Joe Barry make no changes to stop B. Robinson in 2nd half exposed his total ineffectiveness as a Defensive Coordinator. Belichek always has a plan to take away his opponent's best offensive weapon. Barry had nothing, in fact, got worse as game progressed. Please get rid of Barry before any more of these defensive debacles.

If I'm not mistaken, 1 of those dropped INTs was on a 4th down where the ball was turned over anyway, and Walker wasn't going anywhere if he'd caught it. So not a big deal. Alexander probably wasn't going far either but would have prevented a Falcons score.

What bothers me is allowing penalty that took us out of FG range. What infuriates me is blowing a 12 pt lead in the 4th quarter and not picking up a single 1st down. Couldn't stop the run when we knew they would run, and couldn't stop the pass when we knew they'd pass.

There were several mistakes on offense and 1 on special teams but, it was the defense that lost this game. :(

You just mentioned that the offense did not pick up a single first down in the fourth quarter, so I'm not going to pin this loss on the defense. When playing against a had-running, ball control offense, your own offense needs to give your defense some rest.

This Game was totally on Lefluer, who for some reason went totally conservative after we got that 24-12 Lead. They came back and made it 24-15. At that point our Offensive Genius should have come up with a better plan than constantly run AJ Dillion who was having a hard time picking up more than a couple of Yards at a time. There was Wilson and Taylor who were never given the Opportunity to show what they could do, so that was one thing. MLF just didn't use what's between his Ears seeing how the Defense was getting Gashed. Remember Carolina gave up over 150 Yards to them also. They have that 3 Headed Monster which is very hard to control in the run game, then you add London and the other Receivers plus the QB into the mix, that was tough. When you leave your Defense on the Field for almost 37 Minutes in a Football game, you tend to lose, Matt!!! You should have been looking for ways to get your QB more comfortable and get more first downs. If you, Matt had actually done your Job the Defense could have finished off the Game. While you're being hard on the Players, you and the Coaches also NEED to look at yourselves!!! Your Performance as the Head Coach against the Falcons was very poor, you did everything possible to let the Falcons come back which they did because unlike you Arthur Smith kept pushing his Offense!!!!!!

Only players on defense with intensity, walker, Douglas, van ness, and dts! Alexander played like it was his first game. Savage needs to go! Campbell avoid getting hit and hitting someone. That is something we don’t need as a mlb!!! Barry, do you know how to scheme a dense to stop the running game. Desmond rudder is no Aaron Rodgers. What did you think they were going to do. They made you look quite foolish and one bad game away from the unemployment line.

Rookies and wrs looked good. Why didn’t samore play more in second half, ditto Wilson at rb. Lafleur you need to start yithman at kart tackle, Tom’s at center and our penn state lineman to right tackle. Myers did not block a single soul yesterday!!! Where was musgrave in 2nd half? Hurt? How about Kraft at te? Lafleur did not prep this team at all. Looting the field goal attempt early hurt a lot. This is a coaching issue!! What did we lose by? Yeah those 3 points would’ve been nice to have!!!

One other thought for everyone and Joe Barry. You know we signed a fa safety who had over 100 tackles last season. Why is he not starting!!! He had 50 more tackles than all of our dts combined last year. Did we need someone to help support our run defense? Another reason Barry should be gone!!!! Owens is who I am talking about. Savage and Ford are not the answer. This should have been a priority in the past draft not five wide receivers. That is a Gute problem/issue!!
