Gut Reactions: Rodgers still owns the Bears

Aaron's gut reactions from the Packers win over the Bears to bring Green Bay to 5-1.

  • Where were you for the "I still own you!" game?
  • Aaron Rodgers is a bad man.
  • We're just going to ignore the first quarter, right?
  • Speaking of the first quarter, you know how I always say "Lotta ballgame left"? There you go.
  • This defense was/is missing guys at all three levels and still found a way. Wasn't always pretty, but that was one gutsy performance.
  • Speaking of not pretty, Rasul Douglas wasn't great by any means, but man, he was active as hell. New defense, only been in town for a few weeks. I'll take it.
  • Kenny Clark going full Reggie White in the fourth quarter was beautiful.
  • Jaylon Smith being used on EARLY down was...a surprise. Not a fan.
  • Oren Burks used from scrimmage period. Not a fan.
  • Dean mother effing Lowry ladies and gentlemen.
  • Joe Barry was pretty conservative against a young, inexperienced quarterback.
  • I hate that they took EQ's touchdown away for phantom offensive PI. LITERALLY after the defensive back had illegal contact prior to the touchdown smh.
  • Shout out to Lucas Patrick for stepping in at center after most likely not practicing there all week.
  • I think that big AJ Dillon run where he made the safety miss got me pregnant.
  • Hope Myers and Savage are ok.
  • The Bears Still Suck.
  • Go Pack Go.

We threw 23 passes and scored 24 points, on the road, against a pretty solid defense.

Defensively, we did a good job against a rookie QB.

5-1, 2-0 in the division, 2-0 at home, and 3-1 on the road. Despite a really bad run of injuries at DB and OL.

The banged-up Packer defense played better than the Bears overrated, over-hyped QB of the Bears. Hence the Bears QB played to the Packers' benefit. We all know that many, even most of the games played against the Bears and won are mostly due to the inept play of their QB's.

It isn't that hard to understand.

We just understand what you really meant is that if the blind optimist and denier were a realist, such as yourself, we would know that this Packers team does not pass your eye test and has no chance of winning the Super Bowl, which you have already boldly predicted.

Even if the run D made us go OOF a few times, 14 points on the road? I will take that anytime!

I agree, J Smith is a coverage guy not a run stop guy.

How much better will this team be when Bakhtiari is out there and Newman can become a reserve? Love the mullet, Ryan, but at least 3 or 4 times a game he seems to totally miss his assignment and get QB1 killed.

Fields mystifies me. Those plays where he just holds the ball and holds the ball and takes a bad sack. Is he just in love with his own speed and thinks he can get away? Oh and Kenny Clark is a beast!

Good solid win.

Especially as a rookie facing the Packers for the first time, Fields may have been surprised by the quickness and agility of Clark in being able to make those two diving tackles for sacks. I'm impressed.
On a related note, I'm shocked so far this season as to how often the Packers are getting to the quarterback for big plays -- instead of arriving just a little late and allowing first downs.
I truly can't remember the last time our pass rush has been this good. It's a treat.

" Those plays where he just holds the ball and holds the ball and takes a bad sack. Is he just in love with his own speed and thinks he can get away?"

We'd better get used to that - that's a rookie QB struggling to un-learn his CFB bad habits....... we're going to get to see a lot more of that from a home team perspective in the coming years!

Regarding Fields' general play:

It was a tricky call on that INT play....... I could easily see that going the other way, and the whole complexion of the game being changed.

The Packers did the best tactical thing by getting him behind of the scoreboard and by-and-large taking the run game away from them (lets not forget that the Bears were down to RB3! as the starting back).

A satisfying win.

The contrast in this game between Matt LaFleur and Matt Nagy was real evident. MLF fielded a really beat up squad yet called a game within the boundaries of the personnel. Nagy forced Fields into some ridiculous situations. Barry wasn't a liability on defense, but the Bears gave up running the ball after gutting the Packers defense.
Rodgers kept things relaxed and did what had to be done given the situation.
The Packers o-line did well against one of the better defensive fronts in football. The Packers backups in the secondary played above their heads.

An 82 yard punt?

I'm sure the Chicago media and fans have begun their weekly witch hunt. Nice to back the Pack.

Agree, I thought that the consistent S play of Savage and Amos over the top and on those screen plays has really helped the limit the liability of the replacement corners.

Campbell in the middle has also been a revelation. Trusting him to not miss his sideline-to-sideline assignments is allowing Amos to also help in the slot.

.... Can't go without agreeing with Nagler and congratulating Dean Lowry for his consistent pressure. He's put together 3 really good games so far this year. Consistently holding his side up, closing the pocket and getting pressure on the QB.

Did anyone see how TB got away with essentially mugging the Eagles receivers? The gross inconsistency in the refereeing in the NFL is shameful. And then see the penalty called on St. Brown....people will stop watching if they don't clean this up. Instead of improving it's only getting worse. ( and I'm not just talking about Packer games...it's the whole league).

that was the primary thing that irked me about that NFCCG - the change in interpretation of rules for holding and PI in the post-season.

I'd like to see these things added to the challenge schedule - for no other reason than to get the consistency up (heck, I don't really want to see another excuse for a stoppage but this madness needs to be put down).

This game seemed to reflect a fundamental difference in the baseline talent. Chicago has some great players, but not enough where it is needed. QB. Beware losing an elite QB. Offensive line as well: just not enough on Chicago to field a decent set of starters, much less delve into their reserves.

I’ve been hugely disappointed by EQs performances and focus in a last chance year before today. That said, he did nothing wrong on that “TD” and threw a perfect block later. IF and it is a big IF, he’s woken up and realized it’s time to take it seriously, that is great. If there are injuries he might keep his roster spot when MVS returns.

Random Thoughts: Rodgers needs a haircut :-) Despite the injuries, this is a well coached team. Credit the coaching staff (Except ST cover and return. The curse lives on) for having this team play to its strengths. Rodgers running this offense is deadly when he does not freelance. (See the checkdown to a run in third. Almost dropped my ice tea) Credit Barry with improved ILB play and Gute for drafting Slaton allowing Clarke to slide out to DT) Even in today's matchup football, who win the LOS wins the game. That was a Man's game on both lines today. I Need A (Root) Beer....

Once again a win is a win. Once again I keep on swearing at our bad tackling and our bad Red Zone coverage. Once again I am wondering why we hired a DC who was 0-16 with the Lions. But once again the D made some plays when they needed too. However would they be able to make the plays required against a better quarterback.

To me, as an impressionist, the D looks a lot better this season for some reason.
It seems faster and more physical.
Plus, there's a good possibility of improvement as Joe Barry has more time to work with his defenders, and maybe gets more of those guys healthy.
I'm hopeful about our D.

By the second half, the D was missing Preston Smith, both starting corners and one starting safety and of course Z. Given that, some players stepped up enough. That’s a pretty thin secondary and rush at the same time, which is typically a recipe for disaster.

I know that you are probably right - but it is frustrating when they leave a guy open in the red zone and stand there guarding air. There seems to be a bit more fire this year but also too many missed assignments and I still think that we need to be very much better because good QB's will eat us up . And we havent really faced one yet - Ben was off, Goff nah, needed a great late play by AR to beat San Fran, and 2 young QB's just learning.

I just hope that these new guys get up to speed because we cant just wait on Smith and Alexander to get back and do we want King back?

In the third quarter, a superb drive of small ball: 10 plays, 90 yards, 6:54 minutes. Also, on the touchdown pass, Aaron Rodgers did a good job of checking down to a secondary receiver in running back Aaron Jones.
In the fourth quarter, with only a 3-point lead, a different kind of drive. It would have been nice to go small ball again, but the Bears seemed ready to stop that strategy. It seemed smart, therefore, to try some longer passes downfield. After a running play was stuffed for no gain, Allen Lazard caught a pass for about 11 yards and a first down, and Davante Adams caught a deep ball after getting big separation. On the touchdown play, Rodgers again did a good job of not trying to force a pass into the end zone, but ran it in himself.
Point being, if the Packers can combine small ball with long ball, the our offense can reach an even higher level of of excellence to the point of being almost unstoppable. We would have the versatility to go small or long -- at any time in the game -- depending on what the defense gives us.
So if we get in a situation like the last championship game against the Bucs late in the game, with first-and-goal from the 8, we'll have a better chance of getting that big touchdown.
***
Rodgers has 11 games left in the regular season to hone this offense with increasing diversity under his coaches. At this point in his career, it could be a challenge a great player like him will cherish as an opportunity to further refine of his craft of quarterbacking.
Let's grow in versatility as an offense to be able to use any part of the field vertically and horizontally and diagonally, and to have all of our skill guys ready to step up at any time to make a big play.
It could be the next step that puts the Packers over the top for a 14th title.
How great would it be to face the Bucs defense again in the playoffs and truly run circles around it, by outsmarting it every which way until it is exasperated, exhausted and defeated.

Very active game from Lowry. I mentally cut him or forced a pay cut last March. He's probably closer to earning his pay than I thought he'd be. Also, he seems to be improving over time this year. He might need two guys near him who can play.

I am at least considering the idea that I might have been wrong to want to cut him. LOL 5-1!

I was watching some film of Lowry. He was bull rushing often and when the OL dropped anchor to stop him he immediately went for a move to get around him. It was a natural progression of when his progress was slowing he went for a move. Maybe light has finally came on. We can only hope it has and it spreads to the rest of the DL. GPG

Absolutely an asset, but a fairly costly one.

Because he's a native of Northern Illinois and played for Northwestern, I wonder how much playing in front of the "home folks" may have helped his level of play.

I’ve never understood that “play to the contract” stuff.

Should Lowry have signed for less money than the Packers offered him?

He gets paid for being on the gameday active list. He gets paid to practice, and attend meetings. He gets paid to work out. He gets paid to give 100%. He does all that.

If you think he’s overpaid, blame Gute, not Lowry

Seeing Clark at DE - I didn't realize how well he moved in space. Need to hit the repeat button. Also saw glimpses of what Dillon can do - especially to tiring defenses - who had a dose of A. Jones all game - then a shot of Dillon. Seems like a good prescription for continued success (A. Rodgers).

Gritty win. Wasn't always pretty.

- Rodgers just makes it look easy. I know this might be the last dance, so I'm soaking up each game watching his laser throws, him escaping a blitz and then the "I own you" was the cherry on top
- Jones/Dillon duo combined for 135 yards, really impressed with the thunder/lightning combo
- Kenny Clark is a BEAST. Someday, I hope we can pair him with a 1st rd talent or FA DT to wreak even more havoc up the middle
- Props to Lowry and Garvin today. They stepped up well and made plays
- Royce Newman cannot let Hicks or any pass rusher a clean shot at #12
- Special team was pretty solid -- no big returns, and Bojorquez boomed an 82 yard punt and Crosby hit all his kicks
- Lazard did some dirty work today as usual....did Cobb even play ?
- Nice to see Amari Rodgers a little bit
- Hated that P.I. call on ESB. Yuck.
- Injuries starting to pile up, really hope we can get some guys healthy soon

Is it just me or is this team starting to feel like the 2010 team with all the injuries? A lot of wins that season that were not flashy, but the team would just find ways to win, and back-ups kept stepping up and answering the call.

Bring on Washington!

Refs have a tough job, no use losing sleep over it. I thought we were offside on the pick of Fields and that EQ’s touchdown should have stood. Overall it mostly evens out IMO. We need some injury luck now, going in the wrong direction again. It would sure be nice to have Z back but everything I read leans towards him being done for the year. Hope that’s not the case.

This was as solid a game as GB has played in a while. Welcome back to being a target in the passing game - Lizard. Yes, AJ/AJ is a very talented and complementary duo. Both are valuable extensions of our passing offense as well. Great to see St Brown make that TD catch even if it was incorrectly called back. And credit to QB12 for doing exactly what was needed today and not going schoolyard.

On the defensive side of ball, yes, KC was channeling the Minister of Defense in the 4thQ. 59 remains kick-ass. And Mr. Lowry is looking like a real contributor these days. And in the secondary, let's give credit to the Packer organization for claiming Douglas and getting him up to speed as fast as they did. He is a real hitter/tackler.

I even enjoyed much of our ST play today.

Big win for our men of cheese!

Tearing the heart out of Chicago fans never gets old.

I'm very concerned the D is relying too much on Lowry and Clark. What happens when other teams focus on them, or if one of them gets injured? Need to spread those sacks around, get more guys involved.

4th and 26? So good of the universe to have a little fun at our expense on the Bears final drive. This time, too bad, you lose!

Tons of grit on both sides of the ball two weeks in a row. I like these guys and this team.

I felt badly for ESB, too. Michael Irvin and Cris Carter were mentioned above, and rightly so. I'll add Randy Moss to that list. OPI? Pfft, nope nope nope.

The Bears still suck.
EQ and the Packers were robbed of a TD after illegal contact against EQ was injured.
Too many guys getting hurt, especially on defense
R. Douglas looking pretty good so far.
Jones, Dillon and Adams are deadly.
Lowry coming on last few games.
Good solid road win.
GPG! Thanks, Since ‘61

EQ was on the field after. I do not believe he was injured. Douglas looked a lot better than Yiadom. He certainly looked energetic but he’s clearly not up to speed with the scheme yet.

Great TOTAL team effort, they all deserve a game ball.
With special mention for Kenny Clark who came back to life
just when we needed him in the game and against our
biggest rivals..... The little Bears.

WTG Guys

Does anything feel as good as going to soldier field and pounding
the Bears into submission?

A very good day

Tonight I smoke a Cuban in celebration....

gotta say, i did not expect the strength of this packers defense to be the interior D line and the Middle linebacker before the season!! its been literally the weakness for so long, and these guys are showing up. people keep saying we havent had a middle LB like campbell since bishop or barnett, but i think hes better than the both of them in this 6 game sample size. sure, bishop had the explosive plays in the backfield, but i dont remember his being as consistent as campbell, and he definitely wasnt the leader he is. for as much as the packers and gute have said "fuck the ilb position" over the years, its good to see that they finally found one. what a fucking difference this guy makes, him and clark in the middle. you really cant say this D is soft this year. with that being said, jaire needs to get his ass back for the tough stretch of guys like D hop, cooper cupp, dk, lockett, tyreek hill. next week, we will see how stokes and the corners match up with terry mclaurin. but kudos to gute for finding campbell. i honestly think he has changed the entire mindset on this defense. it just looks like a different group, regardless of the amount of practice squad guys we have on the perimeter.

and as for the offense. elgton jenkins got his ass whooped early, but ima give him the benefit of the doubt due to injury and rust. i liked the shovel pass. i liked rodgers throwing to lazard and eq and amari rodgers finally. these teams watch film, they know who 12 has eyes for. gotta take whats there. hopefully bakh will be designated for return next week. the red zone offense will improve as the o line gets healthy. you give 12 and 17 time, they will make backyard shit happen down there. on another note, im watching dak play right now. he has 30 seconds to throw the ball every play, no wonder why hes throwing bombs all over. just makes me appreciate 12s season that much more.

Game ball to the coaches for getting a solid team effort with so many players injured and so many new faces in the locker room (and on the field).
It looked like a very workman-like game for the offense-- never really in doubt, just grind it out-- and the Bears never really had a chance as solid play by a defense with a lot of unfamiliar names allowed only two good drives and nothing else.

I think the addition of Campbell has totally changed the D for by far the best of any FA to the Packers in many years! Really like the guy, all over like horse shit! [Not being hateful here, we have lots of Mormons where I live! They are great people]

Because he almost caught a pass? It did look like he pushed off. They call that nowadays.

Y’all saw the the same things I did concerning Douglas; he makes the receiver contest the catch; I like it. And Stokes, he’s always on the receivers hip. He appears to have been a great draft pick.

I always enjoy the Packers sending Bears fans to the fetal position.

Justin Fields was pretty brutal. He had a couple good throws early, and after that his only good moments were a couple of long scrambles. When he threw that late TD pass, the announcer praised him to the skies and mentioned "the maturation of Justin Fields." I think he had that phrase in mind the whole game and was waiting for the chance to use it, even if it was for a short TD pass to a wide open receiver that could've been completed by any high school QB. I wonder if Bears fans were annoyed by all of the praise for Justin Fields. Bears fans know bad QB play when they see it. They could probably tell that the announcer was just pandering to them.

Anyway, it was a good win for the Packers, but man, they need to get healthy before they play a really good team. It's hard to imagine the current defense stopping a quality offense. Some of these new guys are really playing well, though.

“I. OWN. YOU.” Perfect retort to the double birds.

The most balanced attack displayed offensively by this Packers team. 24 rushing attempts combined between Jones & Dillon. 23 passing attempts by Aaron Rodgers. Added to that, Rodgers spread the ball around more. Lazard with 5 targets. Tonyan with 3 targets. Amari Rodgers had the 2nd pass thrown to him all season, for a nice 14 yard gain.

I think the team was shook on O when Josh Myers went down early, on the 3rd snap of the game, but Lucas Patrick came in and after getting warmed up, provided a steadying force at C in Myers' place. Understandable how poorly that Q1 went, considering. Good to see them get untracked.

Jones and Dillon both rushed for better than a 5 ypc average. Jones busting a long of 28 yds, Dillon the 36 yd run. CHI had the #11 Rush DVOA according to Football Outsiders. That was a sound run D we faced, and could have run it up even more with more carries. Great performances by those two, and our OL.

You're right, Aaron. The D was impressive playing without some key players. Gutsy is the perfect descriptor. Kenny Clark was the MAN! Great seeing his return!!!

LaFleur's gameplan/play calls were solid, flexible, took what CHI gave him. This was a good one to enjoy. Any win against CHI is a good win.

Loved seeing the Packers use Dillon to close out the game; man, was he effective running over the defense!
