Mack Attack in Green Bay?
Could free agent Khalil Mack be Brian Gutekunst's version of signing Charles Woodson or Julius Peppers?

As the NFL embarks on a new league year and free agency starting tomorrow, the Green Bay Packers are in a position where they can fill a few key holes with the right free agent signings. The team has immediate needs at pass rusher and cornerback.
In the past 20 years, those two positions had two major signings but were players who were not in demand the first week of free agency.
Could Brian Gutekunst replicate what his predecessor Ted Thompson did in bringing in a veteran defensive player that could seemingly get the Packers over the top.
In 2006, the Packers signed Charles Woodson. The would-be future hall of famer was not signed until April 26, 2006, a few days before that year’s draft. Woodson signed a seven-year contract with Green Bay, a deal potentially worth up to $52.7 million.
The fact that Charles Woodson scored 10 defensive TD’s in only 100 games with the Packers is hard to fathom.

After playing eight seasons with the Raiders, Woodson would go on to win the 2009 defensive player of the year award, finishing his Green Bay career with 38 interceptions, nine of those returned for touchdowns. It was Woodson, who along with Clay Matthews, would be the centerpiece of the 2010 defense, that led the team to the Super Bowl XLV championship.

Eight years after the deal for Woodson, Thompson struck gold again with another soon-to-be wearer of a gold jacket in Canton with his signing of Julius Peppers. Peppers, like Woodson, was not signed at the beginning of free agency. He was signed March 15, 2014, a week into free agency that offseason.

In three seasons with the Packers, Peppers finished with 25 sacks, and even doubled the amount of interception returns he had in his first 12 seasons, with two in 2014. After playing his first 12 seasons with the Panthers and Bears, Peppers went from a down 4-3 defensive end to playing all over the line as a stand up outside linebacker.

Fast Forward to 2025 and there is an older defensive player available, who could join those two Canton, Ohio and that is pass rusher Khalil Mack. Mack will be entering his age 34 season, just like Peppers did in 2014.
Mack is coming off just 6 sacks in 2024, but the year prior, playing in Brandon Staley’s defense (which is similar to Jeff Hafley’s), Mack had 17 sacks and finished in the top 10 of defensive player of the year voting. For his career, Mack sits at 107.5 sacks, which is 7th among active players.
Happy Birthday Khalil Mack!

Mack has experience in both playing as a 4-3 hand in the ground defensive end as well as a 3-4 standing up outside linebacker. It is likely he would be the Day 1 starter opposite Rashan Gary, and would give young players such as Lukas Van Ness, Brenton Cox and Kingsley Enagbare a veteran to learn from.

"Peppers, like Woodson, was not signed at the beginning of free agency. He was signed March 15, 2014, a week into free agency that offseason."
To be fair, Julius Peppers was cut by the Bears at the start of free agency and signed by the Packers just a couple days later. He wasn't out there from January to March. It's a little different scenario. Peppers was a physical freak, too: he played in all 16 games something like 15 times in his career, and missed a grand total of something like 6 over his whole career.
That said, Mack has a track record of being available, too. He's only missed games in 3 of his 11 seasons. He only played about half the snaps for the Chargers last season, which is a low-water mark for him. You have to ask, why?

The issue with Mack is his asking price which is reportedly around $24MM. That is a lot for a 34 year old guy who had 6 sacks last season. The guys he would be replacing (Enagbare and Cox) had 4.5 and 4.0 sacks last year while earning around $4.3MM combined. Not sure Mack is the right answer.

I did a little snooping, and I couldn't find a reason for the low snap count. Joey Bosa only missed three games, which is better than usual for him, and they had a young player emerge last year. So maybe they just decided to rotate more heavily than usual. On the plus side, the low snap count explains his relatively low sack total. I saw that he was 9th in the NFL in pressure percentage. Also, he was part of an excellent defense, so maybe he was drawing double teams and creating opportunities for others. The Chargers allowed the fewest points in the league last year, and they were sixth in sacks. Maybe it would be a good fit for him to join the Packers, who rotate their DEs heavily.
Of all the free agent and trade candidates who have been mentioned, Mack seems to me like the best fit for the Packers.

Would he improve the team, Yes! He is still one of the best all-around edge guys (Run & Pass rating). As with any FA player, it depends on whether he would improve the team, age, and the contract. I think he still can play, but given his age, do the Packers still like him?
I also would like to point out that on the D-line, results often depend on the teammates around you. Hence, why I am not ruling out another defensive tackle despite our numbers at the position.
Thanks for the piece, Mitch!

I say no to Mack—last resort only. His production is waning, much like a Von Miller.
Meanwhile, there’s this guy; Hend

Wups—mistakenly pushed the submit button. Anyway— there’s this guy - Hendrickson, perhaps the best in the business—maybe we should grab him…….?

Reported at 3 year $48 million max, with $26 million guaranteed. Does this set the market for Chase Young now? I think so.... How about Jonathan Allen, who the Vikings are rumored to be interested in?

Why not return last year's #6 defense and use the FA money to get a starting corner to replace Stokes? That alone would improve the defense (and would use a big chunk of the money). Add in the year of experience for last year's rookies, the year of familiarity with Hafley, and it should be as good or better this season..
Any money remaining could be used for other purposes. It doesn't all have to be spent on some older guy who's probably already on the downside of his career. It could be used to extend our own or it could be rolled forward. Options.

Given our lack of contract re-ups, I fully expect the Packers to sign a FA CB. Older guys have value too, just not at some of the insane money. Regardless, it does not meet the Packers M.O., so it's all moot for any player older than 28, until proven otherwise.

Not about Mack, but other big guy - Myles Garrett:
- Garrett in February - I want to play for a contender.
- Garrett in March - I want to play for Cleveland where my home is.
Poor or rich $ changes perspective to that extent that Browns become better than contender.

Or, OR--and hear me out here-- Gute could pull his version of signing McKinney & Jacobs by signing Mack.

Guter grabbing a front line player? Are you kidding me? That's against his "religion". Yea, he did in '24 but now we'll watch Guter return in '25 and let all the ballers fly by. D.Adams...Metcalf gone. Who else will be gone by Wednesday? We should be securing DL Hendy, but he'll go to the Bears or Viqueens or Lions. So sit back Packernation and watch the 747 players fly off to other teams, while we watch prop-jets & Cessna players land at G.Bay!
Incidentally, here's a quote from Lombardi Ave web site about the big WRs signing. "It leaves the Packers out in the cold. They need wide receiver help but must now scramble to assess the best remaining options."

FA DE is no longer an option for a difference maker....Pivot to DL difference maker now and a CB1....WR difference makers gone unless there is a trade for someone not due a contract salary bump.
