Mike Daniels on Packers' Playoff Absence: "It Sucked Bad"

-- While sitting at home in January is an anomaly for Mike Daniels, the Green Bay Packers defensive lineman wasn't too fond of the concept after his team missed the postseason for the first time in his six-year NFL career.

"It sucked. I'm not going to lie to you, it sucked bad," Daniels said in an appearance on NFL Network on Friday. "And to know that we were a direct cause of that - the defensive side of the ball - we've got to do a lot better."

The Packers finished with a 7-9 record by the end of the season after rolling through the first five weeks of the season 4-1 and hoisting themselves as one of the most lethal teams in the NFC. However, quarterback Aaron Rodgers' broken collarbone suffered on Oct. 15 drastically altered the destined path for the rest of the season.

As a result of the shortcomings, the Packers moved then-general manager Ted Thompson into the role of senior advisor to football operations, promoted Brian Gutekunst to G.M. and hired Mike Pettine to replace Dom Capers as the Packers' defensive coordinator -- a move that Daniels has been undoubtedly in support of.

"We got coach Pettine now. That's a huge change, and I know he's going to do some amazing things with us because we definitely have the guys. I know everybody's hurting just like I am -- at least they should be -- for missing those playoffs. It sucked, man, it really did.

"I have a lot of confidence in coach, I know the guys are going to come back ready to go. It's going to be a fun year, it really is."

Consider it a bittersweet consolation for Daniels, who lost his defensive line coach, Mike Trgovac, this offseason. Trgovac now resides with the Oakland Raiders as a member of Jon Gruden's staff after working with Daniels -- among others -- for six of his nine seasons in Green Bay.

In the Packers' final season under Capers, they finished 26th in points allowed per game and 22nd in yards allowed per game. It was the second season in a row that they finished 21st-or-above in both categories. They also finished tied for 17th in sacks and tied for 13th in takeaways.

2017 saw more communication breakdowns more than any other in the Capers era. Players were out of position on a weekly basis, confused with pre-snap adjustments and unsure of what their assignment is. Whether or not that falls on the shoulders of the player not executing his job or the coach not properly implementing his remains to be seen, as Pettine will be inheriting -- for the most part -- a similar defensive roster to what Capers had a season ago.

No player will outright oust Capers, but it wasn't a secret: change needed to be made if this team wanted to compete with the best of foes.

"I think it's an accumulation of things over the years. I don't know how much of the [other] teams really respected us on the defensive side of the ball. I know some teams flat out didn't, and that's our fault; we've got to do better. We're the only ones that can fix that.

"With coach Pettine coming in, I know that's one thing he's big on, is the accountability. He's not afraid to hurt anybody's feelings, I'm really looking forward to that. It should make for some interesting meeting times. ... It's just different. It's going to be a culture change -- a needed culture change. It's just going to be a lot more attitude and it's going to be coming from the coach, so I'm not going to be the only one saying it."

Despite the Packers' glaring problems defensively, Daniels made 2017 his fifth consecutive season with four-or-more sacks and earned his first career trip to the Pro Bowl, replacing Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

Daniels being Daniels here. He can't out his teammates as not being quality NFL caliber players. Obviously, the coaching staff needed to be completely shaken up, but I think it's also clear that there are some serious personnel deficiencies on the defensive side of the ball in Green Bay too.

We have no surefire CB1 and we do not have an OLB1. That is a recipe for a bottom 1/3 unit, regardless of how great the other pieces are - and our other pieces aren't great.

We've got a defensive line right now, and half of an ILB group. The rest is underachieving (HHCD, Perry), old (CM3) or potential (King/Randall). And depth? LOL!

Your assessment is correct, and it’s sobering. How the Packers still have so many deficiencies despite the enormous amount of resources invested is beyond me.

We’re going to find out quick if it was personnel drafting poorly or poor coaching of said talent. For the sake of the organization, I hope it’s poor coaching. If it was bad personnel decisions, TT just set the Packers back back 10+ years due to his bad drafting.

I don't think we'll ever know because both Capers and TT were fired after 2017. If one or the other went bye-bye, we'd have had a season or two to gauge results. OK, fine TT "retired," but I'd guess Murphy told him he could "retire" or be fired.

That said, I'm happy they're both gone. I believe both were about 5-6 years past their NFL expiration date by 2017.

I remind you that TT spent the past two to three years rebuilding the personal side of the front office. I think it's reflective in the past couple of drafts. I not going to defend either TT or Capers, their record speaks for it self (both good and bad). Understand, Murphy ask Ted to stay on even thru he was ready to retire. There was an orderly transition plan in place and Murphy trashed it for his own reasons. Even Thompson knew it was time to go. Bash him all you want, but at least respect him for what he did, and gave to the Green Bay Packers. (Baby Boy Huh. Congrats. Now sleep while you can........:0)

“Attitude” is nice, but I’d trade it for stuffing the run, sacking the QB, and blanketing the receivers.

I only wish this attitude translated to how they felt about not winning SB's. No question this team thinks making the playoffs is a great accomplishment in and of itself.

At first reading of the headline, I thought it said... Mike Daniels on Packers Defense

Well, Daniels didn't say not winning the super bowl sucks, so he isn't in your league in terms of spoiled packer fan.

All of us spoiled fans with the gift of vision realize the run is almost over. All runs eventually come to an end. I know this and know that we are incredibly unlikely to ever have it this good again and would love to see that capitalized upon, not wasted. Ted's era was anything but spoiling to me.

As a fan, I honestly enjoyed the 5-3-1 strike year as much as any compared to what's happened since the SB. To watch a team fighting to become relevant and arrowing up is much more exciting than watching one flatline. I loved when we had Lofton and then went out and added John Jefferson. It was fun watching Lynn Dickey and the gang. Seeing Brian Noble in the locker room so excited about finally getting to the playoffs.

When the new era begins with the next QB, I will enjoy the pursuit of building back up. Our current situation isn't as fun. Knowing we don't have the defense year after year is depressing not exciting to me.

I can't help but wonder how the Packer's Dline with Clark and Daniels couldn't put more pressure on pass plays as well as stopping the run. My brain goes to the third wheel either Lowry/Dial/Mt Adams/put in name....that whoever plays the third down lineman, didn't really provide much push or toughness in the trenches.

The deal is that under Pettine...who knows how this will shake out.

Some of that (Lowry played pretty well but didn't flash pass rush that much). The other thing is that frequently, there was no third DL on the field at all.

"And to know that we were a direct cause of that - the defensive side of the ball - we've got to do a lot better." ---MIke Daniels could've said this about any year he's been part of the Packers defense.

I feel bad for Mike Daniels. Guy has never been part of a good defense in Green Bay. Only Clay and Morgan were here for 2010 so nobody else on this defense knows what it's like to play for a good defense. We hear talk of culture of winning in Green Bay. I'll bet the defense feels like the culture on their side of the ball is anything but that.

Daniels needs to forget last season, move forward and become part of the solution for 2018 and beyond. Thanks, Since '61
