How about slipping Eddie Lacy up there? He had a great game, making a lot of extra yards on his own.

James Jones gets the game ball. What a turn of career for him, as it looked like his career was coming to an inglorious end. Suddenly, strange sequence of fortune. Seeing his grateful knee-down salute after his touchdown was moving.

Richard Rodgers could be up there for blocking and delivering some some punishment after his catch.

Considering the special teams of the past few years, I think we give a 'participation award' for special teams. Naw, better yet....salute to Ty Montgomery. He should be in the esteemed 'good' category. He gave some welcomed energy and burst. SP coach gets a tip of a nod, having stymied the collective panic of that last on-sides KO.

Ugly. Only one name there? OLB - DE play? I mean all of us meatheads in America with zero football resume still knew Forte and Bennett were the only weapons. Capers? You da meathead man. You da meathead. You didn't have your team ready. You down in the ugly section. It was a patchwork O-line Chicago presented, and without top WR and Alshon less than 100%. If Cutler was more accurate, there would have been another score. You ugly.
(Your scheme on Matthews interception was one of your exceptions, and that saved the game). Chicago's O-line looked like top 10. If it was a veteran Chigo OLine there and not a patchwork; then Daniels, Raji, Pennel, Barrington all join the "bad". Oh heck, I'm still pissed, just put them there now. Capers front 7 still can't contain and set the edge, though us meatheads across America shout at their TVs every sunday for last 5 years. Damarius Randall looked desperate to me when he was in. Hope the game slows down for him, but I won't nominate him for anything good or bad, b/c any rook gets a nod for game 1 action. I had to flip to the Rams-Seahawks game to watch a team respect defensive football. What a cru in St. Lu. Wow, they have some footballers on D.

How many points Bears put on the score? Without last TD! Who kept them out of the red zone? It is very interesting. When Patriots D doing the same: let you have a drive, then stop you near the end zone, that is terrific defensive mastermind of Bill Bellichick. When that made Packers D, they are, together with their coordinator wasted personal who do not knbow nothing about football...
But, this time you can not call Dom Cpers, because the only TD from the first half came after 2 stupid moves by Sam Shields. Or you are suggesting that Capers trained Sam Shields to do that stupidities?

Croat - I appreciate your zeal in support of Capers but I think that you are missing the point. The tackling by the Packers defense was terrible yesterday. They still play like tackling is illegal. Let's not forget that they yielded over 400 yards (405 I think) to a Bears offense that was not even one dimensional, just one player, Forte.
The Bears were only forced to punt once during the game.Shields had a bad game, Neal was awful, Pennel disappeared after the 1st series, Dix embarrassed himself, did Perry even play after his off sides penalty? Fortunately, CM3, Peppers and Raji came to play.
The point here is that a banged up Bears offense was able to keep A. Rodgers off the field for a long time. We only had 3 possessions in the first half. We won yesterday, but we will not be able to continue to win against better offensive teams if our defense cannot make stops and get the ball back to Rodgers. It's the first game, it's September football, so there is no reason to be upset yet, but the tackling must improve. Lynch is coming to Lambeau next week and we need to be better. No excuses. Thanks, Since '61

This was a road game. I wasn't here on this board last year but I am assuming there were these same comments after every road game last year? Since they did get crushed by the Seahawks, got nearly shut out by the Lions, looked awful against the Bills, got run over by the Saints, looked sluggish in a win over the Bucs, had to hold on to win by three in Minnesota and needed a last second TD to beat the Dolphins on the road last year. An 8 point win on the road in the first real serious game action this team has had (since they didn't play in the preseason at all) actually looks quite good to me given how average they played on the road all last season.

Good..

Winning.. Last I checked a win is a win. The Packers are 1-0 for the first time since 2011. They accomplished this against a team with a completely new coaching staff, unscouted looks, and a Packers team that had played their starters very little in the preseason.

The O-Line. They didn't play together in the preseason except for a series in the first preseason game and Rodgers was touched just once.

Eddie Lacy.. Same as above. He hardly played in preseason and he played great. I'm glad they didn't give him too many carries, ease him into the season.

Jones. OMG!! THAT'S why the Packers shouldn't and didn't hesitate to sign him. Myles White doesn't make that one handed TD catch for sure. It was great to see JJ back and yes, ALL he does is catch Touchdowns!

Raji.. I think Dan mentioned it yesterday but a lot of Fortes damage came when the inside was plugged up. I thought Raji played well for his first game since 2013.

Bad

ILB play. Palmer seemed to play a little better as game wore on but my God, this is why FA is a GOOD thing!

HHCD. That play where he ducked his head and let Cutler get by him was embarrassing. I can already hear that obnoxious Irma Furboad, or whatever it calls itself.

Burnett's injury.. This defense is completely different without Burnett. Blown assignments, missed tackles, Receivers running free. Get well soon Morgan, hopefully before next week.

Ugly

Mike Neal was awful. He was consistently giving up the edge being sealed off by Bennett. It actually looked pretty easy for Bennett.

Sam Shields could have gone one of 2 ways after signing that contract, continue to show he was deserving of a contract like that or play like he has. Just think another 5 million and we could have had Revis.

Side Note:

There was a lot of back and forth yesterday if Pennell had any tackles yesterday. He should have been credited with at least 2 assists if not 2 tackles, but he ran himself right past Forte for the 22 yard game on the 2nd or 3rd play of the game. I don't recall seeing him again a play or 2 after that. So much for "Professional Opinions", at least yesterday.

Hey Nick. Thanks for the mention.

On the Pennel issue. I remember one run play Forte up the middle and actually a little away from Pennels side. Raji stuffed the OL and Forte, but Forte wasn't on the ground yet. Raji had control of him and stopped progress when Pennel arrived and help get Forte on the ground. I think that was correctly credited to Raji only, as he had Forte stopped, just not on the ground when Pennel arrived.

Objectively have to give Raji the tackle on that play IMO. It might have also been an occasion where Pennel didn't stay in his gap. Let you decide for yourself if you can see the play again. But I think gap discipline is what got Pennel apparently benched.

Dan - agree completely. Pennel did not maintain any gap discipline yesterday. Adds to the discussion that he is better suited to NT. We just need to wait out Guion's return and get everyone on the DL back where they belong. Thanks, Since '61

I'm pretty much in agreement with the choices. Richardson definitely was at fault on some of the bad runs, especially a big one early on. Getting Burnett back will hopefully help with that.

In some ways though, I kind of like it when we struggle - but still win - in September. It gives the guys motivation to improve and reminds them that having a good team doesn't guarantee you anything.

'Getting Burnett back will hopefully help with that.'

That is the biggest thing that will improve the defense. Last year our safety's became the strongest position on the defense. And that was because Burnett was one of our best players on defense. Getting him back will indeed improve our defense. Burnett and Clinton-Dix formed a really good duo down the stretch last year. Expect the same once Burnett gets playing again.

Great: One more win. At Lambeau. On Thanksgiving. And the Packers tie up the series record for the first time in 82 m.f. years.

Never thought it was possible when I was a kid in the 80s.

"Never thought it was possible when I was a kid in the 80s."

Yep, i remember when it was something like 23 games, seemed insurmountable!

What i find absolutely insane is that in the 90+ years we've played each other, we now hold the scoring advantage by ONE EFFING POINT (i think...). That's bananas!

Good - Agreed.
Some honorable mentions.
- Ty Montgomery. He provided a spark as a returner, that we haven't seen since Cobb returned kicks. I think in one game he already has more return yards then Harris had all of last year.
- Demarious Randall. I thought he looked good in his first game. While I expect some bumps along the way, I thought he played well.

Bad - Agreed.
The only reason why I would take Richardson out of the bad was for his perfectly timed blitz down on the goal line which forced Cutler to throw early on the 4th and 1 play. But that one really good play doesn't take away all the bad plays.

Ugly - Wow, that was really ugly. Did Shields know that they were actually playing a meaningful game yesterday?

Funny thing is Homer (I do believe) was jawing yesterday afternoon about how the Packers didn't even miss Burnett. Wrong answer Homer.

Sam Shields deserved the ugly. For the amount of times a field goal actually gets blocked in the NFL there is no reason to jump off sides. That cost the Packers four points, rest for the defense and momentum in the moment. How'd you like being in that huddle Sam? And that's not even talking about his coverage problems.

More than once I saw CM3 coming around the whole line and making the tackle on the opposite side of the field. Makes you wonder what his opposite was doing. Excellent hustle, but I believe we've also seen in the past where his hustle gets him sucked up too much and leaves space for plays behind him. I'm not against putting him in the good (far from it), just a little worried that I've seen this movie before.

Yeah, I was honestly pleasantly surprised with his play especially in coverage. I thought he was pretty good in coverage considering he had to try and cover Forte most of the day.

That being said, our run defense suffered from not having Barrington in there.

Perhaps they will start using Barrington on run downs, and Palmer on passing downs, once everyone is healthy?

Palmer did some good things, but his run fits were way late. Could be un-scouted looks that took him an extra second to recognize and react. That's all it takes in the NFL. Don't remember CM3 around the LOS as much as last year, either, but he had a good game.

Other than Rodgers, Jones and Montgomery, this team would have lost to just about anybody yesterday. It amazes me that TT did not draft a defensive player until round 5. I think he must be trying to build evidence to fire Capers. Only a Pollyanna would praise any part of this defense.
It's going to be ugly next week. Capers' defense is intimidated by Seattle

'It amazes me that TT did not draft a defensive player until round 5.'

Huh?

Round 1 - CB- Damarious Randall
Round 2 - CB - Quinten Rollins
Round 3 - WR - Ty Montgomery
Round 4 - ILB - Jack Ryan
Round 5 - QB - Brett Hundley
Round 6 - FB - Aaron Ripkowski
- DE - Christian Ringo
- TE - Kennard Backman

Packers 8 picks, 3 out of first 4 picks were on defense. 4 out of 8 were on defense.

If you all feel that GBP will be fine when player x or y come back (e.g., barrington, Jones, Guion, Burnett), don't forget to factor in that the other team likewise have all of their starters in, and that said team might be a respectable OLine/WR corps. Sure, a win is a win, but we still ought to enjoy the game a bit. Otherwise, we could all just skip the game, and check the score to see if its a W. So its not all just about the W. Ok mostly is, but how still have to bet on Packers vs upcoming teams with real O-line like Rams, Cowboys, Chiefs.

Every year we have to watch Dum Capers come up with the same old crap. How many games is Forte going to gash them before Dum figures out how to stop him. I suppose in a few weeks we'll have to watch Kaepernick run for 200 yds. for the millionth game in a row. "Oh please don't dump on Dum, it's the players!" How many years of crap defense do we have to watch before coaches become accountable?

Thank God for Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews for pulling Dum's nuts out of the fire one more time.

Was Capers out there tackling? Forte was bottled up on numerous occasions only to bounce it outside after someone didn't play to their assignment. That's not Capers' fault.

The run fits and gap discipline was terrible. It didn't help that Pennel played for Guion and Burnett was out. They are 2 important ingredients in the run stopping dept. Guess you could say since Barrington was out, but what I could tell Palmer played quite well in his place.

The question marks in the D-Line and in both LB units remain open. Guion and Burnett would have made a difference but to what degree because neither Neal or Perry held the edge is the question. I have been a Perry backer for a long time but his total talent package has not translated to the field and he has not been healthy enough to be on the field regularly. Many questioned his pass rush (bull rush only) but now he can't do his MO, holding the point. Under the circumstances Palmer did OK, much like in his first start at OLB vs the Browns 2 years ago. Shields was still Shields (avoid contact if possible) and Dix lost all of his Alabama fundamentals almost overnight. The Big Guns had to and did come through on defense, Peppers and Mathews, Mathews is a coaches dream, he has super star talent and sells out like a free agent walk on. However, like Palomula, the net is that increases his chances of injury and the cupboard looks bare behind him. Hopefully like the 2nd half of last year the D turns around, the sooner the better.

Damarious Randall had a good debut. He was in man-to-man with Jefferey on several plays and conceded nothing -- that's not an easy assignment.

It will be nice when Datone Jones and Guion return. Raji is mediocre at his best. I still haven't figured out what happened to him but he'll never be special again like he was in 2010. I'd choose Guion over him if I had to make a choice.

About bad tackling: it's not something that will go away and it's a problem with nearly all teams -- not just GB. I won't go on a diatribe but the CBA basically limits teams from improving tackling, it's just not going to happen. HAHA CD will always miss some tackles but I'd rather see that then a DB who is afraid to hit. Just remember AP running Tramon over time and time again and be thankful for HHCD's willingness to stick his nose in, at least.

I agree with adambrymer that bad tackling is partly result of restrictions due to CBA. So therefore fans now scream for further reductions of live drill/contact by wanting less preseason games?
My next comment is now intended to NFL fanbase who whine about 4 preseason games: here-goes
We need more starters working in the preseason game not less. These guys aren't china dolls and don't need bubble wrapping. Stop pampering these highly paid and highly insured athletes who already are semi-gods. Get out there and drill your butt off and do the fundamentals.
Belichick doesn't put up with any pampered diva crap, and doesn't trot out fundamentally unsound players. On the contrary, takes no-names and strikes disciplinarian fear; do your dang job.
