Packers Monday Mock Roundup 2.0

The NFL Draft is soon upon us.  For the next two weeks you're going to see a lot of mock drafts, and I mean, like, a lot of mock drafts.  For the next three Mondays here at Cheesehead TV I"m going to provide you with the Packers' selections in ten of the top mock drafts on the net.  If the mocks provide a second round pick, we'll take a look at that too.

Andrew Billings (4)

Pro Football Focus

Pete Prisco

Daniel Jeremiah

Michelle Bruton

Billings has become an increasingly popular pick, despite concerns that he may not make it to the Packers at pick 27.  I've been relatively vocal that the need to address the nose tackle position in round one is overkill, but Billings is a player with pass-rush upside.  I would personally rather deal with the inside linebacker positon (depending on what prospect it is) or the edge position (because it's very thin) in round one, but if it's Billings I'm not going to be upset in the least.  He's an elite height-weight-speed-strength prospect.

Vernon Butler (3)

Walter Football

Todd McShay - "Grade A" (insider)

Dan Kadar

Butler is a much more versatile DL prospect than Billings and certanily more verstaile than Jarran Reed (who we'll talk about just a little bit later).  His length makes him work in several different positions on the line in Dom Capers' scheme.  I've mentioned this before, but Butler does a tremendous job of disengaging and getting rid of blockers.  There are plenty of defensive linemen that push the pocket, plenty of guys who hold their ground, but not that many guys that make plays. Butler makes plays.

A'Shawn Robinson

Ian Wharton

A'Shawn Robinson is, in my opinion the Alabama defensive lineman with more upside that will be taken in the first round.  He and his Crimson Tide teammate Jarran Reed (I promise, we are getting there) played together on Saban's defensive line and both players were outstanding.  Robinson projects to have a better chance to rush the passer than Reed does, and that's why I prefer him slightly.  He's not the run defender that Reed is (no one in this draft class is), but he's a good three down 3-4 defensive lineman.

Jarran Reed

DraftTek

Reed's a one trick pony, but he's the best at his trick in this class.  He is a shut-it-down run defender.  Backs trying to run in his gap are not going to have any success and the Packers have not had a great run defense over the course of the past few seasons.  Not since the Pickett-Jenkins-Jolly days have the Packers really been elite against the run.  Reed would go a long way towards fixing that.  Is run defense something that you address with your first round pick? I don't think so, but I dont' make the decisions.

Darron Lee

Doug Farrar

Lee is still my favorite pick for the Packers at 27.  He would mesh perfectly for Jake Ryan and would provide the Packers with exactly what they've been missing at the inside linebacker position.

2nd Round Options

Kamalei Correia- DraftTek

Hunter Henry- Walter Football

Jerrell Adams- Kiper

Nick Vannett- McShay

Austin Hooper- Bruton, Charlie Campbell

I still really like Butler, and he's clearly moving up. Some mock him ahead of the Packers. Is he someone you take at #27 or move down and hope he slides? He won't be there in round 2.

The plus to someone like Jerran Reed is that he immediately makes ILB (at least in base) less of an issue...now, if only he could cover RB and TE....

Round 2 mock picks? If Correia is there, I think he's a no-brainer, especially if they go DL in round 1. All those TE picks mocked to the Packers. Wow.

As the Packers' analyst for DraftTek, the Correa pick was mine, but personally, I don't think he'll last that long. I'm also jumping on the Butler train after doing more film study.

Correa seems to be a climber of late, too, and I think you're right: he won't make it to #57. If he did, I think the Packer rep would race to the podium...

I think he's a guy you'd have to wait 3 years and then see how he turned out. I think there will be rough patches with him early on. But based on raw athleticism, I can see why they might take a shot on him if he's there. I'd rather go with a safer pick at that spot (if there really ever is a safe pick).

It's not that I don't like him. I just don't see how he'll make our current Defense better. He's just a fast LB to me. He's nothing like a college Ryan Shazier.

I'm still on the Deion Jones of LSU Bandwagon in the 3rd round, he'd be a really nice addition with Barrington and Ryan to the ILB position. IF the Packers could address OLB and DL in the 1st and 2nd AND land a guy like Jones in the 3rd, the Packers adressed their 3 areas of need other than OL and TE which they could address in 4th and 5th with those 4 picks.

I saw that. Overall I would be happy with that. Minus 1 change. In the 5th round he has the Packers taking Jay Lee. 2 picks later he has Jatavis Brown going. I would take Jatavis Brown in the 5th round no questions asked.

I would love to see the offense add Jerell Adams and Paul Perkins. Would add some play makers to the offense.

There were a couple things I scratched my head on...

Brothers and Morrison...both are active, good instincts, but neither runs very well. In many ways, the same kind of player and neither really adds athleticism to the LB group.

Miller and Hall look like the same kind of player to me, also, long and active, but raw and not overly fast. I like them individually, but not both in the same draft.

Odhiambo has potential but apparently can't stay healthy. I don't think TT would go with only one OL in this draft, and if it's only one, I don't think it would be him.

No pass rushers in this group either on the DL or at OLB. I don't see that happening, either.

If you break it down as a whole its not bad. 1 DL, 2 LB, 2 DB, 1 TE, 1 OL, 1 RB, 1 WR. Overall I would be ok with something like that. Maybe not those exact players, but in general something like that.

I do think they will come away with some sort of pass rusher.

yeah, Brothers is a guy that I think they already have on the roster with Ryan and Barrington. I would like to see a faster LB.

Why would you be happy with that @RC? Just curious.

This draft is rich in pass rushers and run stoppers and in that mock we only come away with 1 single run stopper.

Just as a whole. Like I just said to Dobber its more about the positions in which were taken then the players themselves. I would prefer some other players vs the ones that were chosen, but in general I think its a good mix.

I guess happy is a little strong, but I would be ok with something like that.

Come away with a very good DL. Reed. Then to add Adams and Perkins who I think could add something to our team. Adams maybe wouldn't make a huge impact this year but would be really good for the future. Perkins could come in right away and compete with Starks.

In that sense, I agree. I'd like to see either another DL or LB though.

I just posted a video above about Scooby Wright. I came away more impressed with Perkins then Wright.

I would love to see the Packers draft Perkins. He has a great ability to make people miss. That is something that our other RB's really don't have.

Reed is kind of a fail safe for me. He should be better than the 2015 Raji, and I do think Reed is a legitimate first round pick, but I prefer others. This draft would be disappointing due to the lack of rushers and front 7 speed. The marginal upgrade from Raji to Reed is there but not as great as some others would provide at different positions. Mostly I think in this scenario the draft unfolded badly for GB.

What is the issue with Reader, out of Clemson? I see a man. I see a true - red blooded - NT. I never get too high, and I never try to submarine opposing centers, I would rather take em on...its an awesome sight. The Alabama championship game is a highlight reel of; busting double teams, man handling centers, pad level supremacy, and gap responsibility. I'm confused with the round 4 grade? He's a Raji, but with a much better attitude (IMO passing the I love football eye test), pad level, and is actually conscious of his gap responsibility. A true nose tackle! I'm not looking for a NT that can run down a WR - if thats the case, please count me out, it's ludicrous. True 3 - 4 NT are rare because it's has to be the most mentality challenging positions today's NFL. I'm all in for Reader and would not be shocked to see him come off the board in r2.

I agree that DJ Reader, Billings, and Vernon Butler are the most pure NT's in this draft. Reader had a death in his family and left Clemson just before the season in 2015, and returned in Oct. 2015. Good athlete but most scouts see a rotational back up at the NFL level:

You had me with Billings in the 1st, Higbee in the 4th. Floyd is iffy at the 2nd. Could be a great pass rusher, but it's too much of a project to be so high. Toss up.

For Floyd: https://youtu.be/4PIxviv4PKc?t=4m20s
https://youtu.be/4PIxviv4PKc?t=7m11s
(The very next play)
https://youtu.be/4PIxviv4PKc?t=7m35s
A little bit more of plays like this and he'd be a 1st round lock. He's still raw, inconsistent, not very strong and indecisive.

You lost me with the rest. I'd have to look them up.

Drealyn - I had Higbee as a 3rd but more likely a 4th rounder before his 2nd degree assault arrest, with a possible hate crime enhancer to come. Now Higbee is a 7th round flyer - at best - to me.

Now you've joined the Floyd bandwagon. That is fine: people either love him or hate him. Too long to state my opinion: suffice to say there is a reason Floyd did not participate in the bench press at the combine or at his pro day: it would be embarrassing if he didn't have more reps than Abby. There is a risk that he's Barkevious Mingo. Still, I like him better than Darron Lee, and Floyd is intriguing in the 2nd round.

I still like Billings, but my previous reply to you about him having no gap responsibilities and watching the RB gash through the line exactly where Billings was lined up is concisely stated in this PFF article below:

"Whether it be versus the run or pass, when Billings gets to explode off the snap into the opposing center, he tends to win the rep. Not many teams offer such an opportunity though and when Billings has to play laterally or cross the face of a center the results aren’t nearly as enthusing."

I had no idea of Higbee's assault crime. Wow.

Damn right I'm on that bandwagon. Of all of the film I watched of him the only negatives I seen was his iffy awareness/football IQ, taking on charging blockers, doesn't take advantage of his arm length and he isn't really a violent tackler. Majority of those are easily coachable. I think Floyd would be an absolute steal in the 2nd.

As far as Billings go, it's tricky. I've read/hard that Baylor coach their players to do some weird things on both sides of the ball. Maybe their D-Line are told to only play a certain way. For sure, I know their coaches don't want their WRs to block on running plays. Weird coaching styles in that program.

Maaaaaan, the more I watch Leonard Floyd the more I want him as a Packer. Listen, I don't believe there's no such thing as a "reach", so taking Floyd at #27 (DEPENDING on who else is available) would be a damn good pick. I believe Clay, Peppers and the coaches will get him right. He has to get stronger, disciplined and use his arms more.

What you all like about Darron Lee I've seen in Floyd -- plus more. Maaaaaaan, give me Clay and Leonard over Clay and Lee any day all day.

*Sigh* I have draft fever.

If Green Bay were to move up to the 20th pick range, 7 spots, they would probably have to give up their 3rd round pick and 6th round picks. Possibly getting a 7th round pick back.

If the Packers weren't concerned about his injury wouldn't Jack be worth that?

I'm not saying that the Packers are the ones leaking the info.

Just asking that if the info that is leaked, leads to your favorite team drafting that player, are you happy with it or not?

I do believe that this tends to happen more then we know. I'm not saying its right, just saying I think it happens.

The closer you get to the draft, the less you should believe with reports coming from teams. Seems to be a lot of false info that flies around.

Yeah, but if we're talking about the eventual bone-on-bone degeneration, that's 2 contracts away, probably. If you avoid a blue-chip guy because you worry that in 8 years he's going to have a knee problem, then I think you're looking for a reason to not take him.

We all salivate over the top tier players in every draft. The last players we drafted in the top 10 were Hawk and Raji. It would suck to have a shitty year, draft high and be disappointed. Both Raji and Hawk had ok careers but nothing to get excited about. They weren't game changers and were considered good picks for GB at the time. So keep making the playoffs, draft low and hope to find players that can help you win games.

I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, so it took me awhile to figure out why I'm terrible about predicting the draft for the Packers. It's because you don't know who's available. TT could shock everyone and select the WR from TCU in the first round if he fell that far. I couldn't predict that, nor could anyone else but a few scouts or GMs. I THINK if TT had his choice of Billings, Butler, or Reed...he would take Butler. The only reason I say that is Caper's defense is in one word flexible. DT become DE in many of the packages and DEs become OLBs. To me Billings is a true DT that would be used 30-40% of the time. Reed = Picket and while that's good is it 1st round good? Butler is a better pass rusher then either of the other two and can play nose or end.

Maybe a OLB like Spence or Floyd.....Spence will be gone if what I heard turns out to be true. Floyd I don't know just seems like Jenkins at GA was the better guy. Again my opinion and only looking at a little film. Lee will be gone if everyone is even close to being accurate and Ragland being one of the few LBs that could make it to 27. Then you have to determine if he's a 2 or 3 down LB.

If the choices are like that for the first round....guessing the second is twice as hard. I can hope for players, but like last year proved that TT will go w/ very unconventional players in his selections.

I think everyone here knows that I would love to see Butler in green and gold, but my bet is that if TT were faced with this choice--sad as it might be--he would go with the safest choice and take Reed.

Two picks that wouldn't surprise me:

Derrick Henry - Lacy is coming off a bum year and even if he delivers this year, I wonder if the Packers are comfortable investing a big contract in a guy who's love of the game is questionable.

Su'a Cravens - In the first?? Yes in the first. I'm not sure where the Packers would fit this guy in, but BPA, he is without question one of the best playmakers in the draft, and I think he's the kind of athletic playmaker you can't have too many of.

We need to focus on defense for the first 3-4 rounds, here's a full 7 round mock for the players should take:

- Round 1: Leonard Floyd or Noah Spence
- Round 2: Chris Jones, DE, Mississippi State
- Round 3: Matt Judon, 3-4 OLB, Grand Valley State( Steal?!)
- Round 4, Pick 1: DJ Reader, DT, Clemson
- Round 4, Pick 2: Jerrell Adams, TE, South Carolina
- Round 4, Pick 3: Josh Forrest, ILB, Kentucky
- Round 5: Caleb Benenoch, OT, UCLA
- Round 6: Denver Kirkland, OG, Arkansas
- Round 7: Daniel Lasco, RB, California

We should also sign Sammie Lee Hill in FA to add depth on the defensive line. Feel free to chime in.

1) I'd like the 1st round pick (might hurt a bit if Ragland is there)
2) Chris Jones worries me. The talent is definitely there, but the motor and hustle isn't.
3) Can't find any film on him
4) Haven't watched yet
4) Ehhh
4) I'm interested in knowing why you chose him. In the only film I found of him I never seen him run full speed. He seemed to always half-ass.

I haven't heard of the rest. I'll look 'em up.

EDIT: Watching DJ Reader's film now. I'm starting on the Alabama game. I'm not even 2-minutes in yet and I'm impressed. I mean, who DOESN'T get bullied by an Alabama O-Line??? Reader isn't being moved on double teams and is always moving his blocker backwards in 1-on-1's. I want to say he's almost handling his opponent.

DJ Reader was only pushed back once in that entire Championship game and it came on a double-team block. Any Clemson defender that gets drafted 1st round owes DJ Reader a "Good Lookin' Out" purchase of something. Amazing game. I wish he had some pass rush moves though.

Total highlight reel; blew threw 6 double teams, dominating pad level, impressive gap integrity and passes the eye test with flying colors. I don't get the round 4 grade...? IMHO, to be effective, 3 - 4 alignments require a bully for a NT , not one that runs down WR's and QB's.

(edit) how about that goal line stand against a round 1 center...without a late desperate spin by Henry ,Clemson takes over on downs! What a game!

Right? I totally agree. It must be some off the field things going on, because that grade damn sure isn't reflective of his on the field play. I don't follow college sports or any of their stories -- so I don't know what else could call for the low grade.

This ordering is laughable. Especially 4 and 5. That's not to say they're without talent, because it's definitely there but once you watch their film you will come away wishing they showed so much more.

I like D. J. Reader, too, but he plays in a phone booth. He can eat up blockers, but has some trouble with awareness and disengaging from blockers. I don't have him in the same class as Billings, Reed, or Austin Johnson (I'd add Butler but I view him as a DE who can play NT), but I'd say he is a 3rd round talent, without a lot of upside. Only played 6 games (he took off the first half of the season due to the death of his father). The Alabama game was his best game - something to say for playing your best against the best, btw - and had 3 solo tackles in that game. He had 8 solo tackles plus 5 assists, 1.5 TFL (all against Oklahoma) and .5 sacks for the year. NTs don't generate a lot of stats (Raji had 22 tackles in 15 games last year, 26 tackles in 17 including the playoffs).

I agree with the disengaging claim, but that's coachable. At least he's winning his one-on-one's and is constantly getting push. I haven't seen enough "bad" plays to suggest he has trouble with awareness.

Stats, I could care less about -- especially at a thankless position. He's the reason those other 2 pass rushers weren't allowed to get double teamed. Shaq Lawson and Kevin Dodd.

I don't think he's better than Billings, but I'd take Reader over Jarran Reed and Austin Johnson. Talk about the inability to disengage. I'd give Austin the notch here -- his pass rushing ability is much better than Reader's. He has a few moves and he hand fights.

What do y'all think of Kenneth Dixon? I'm seeing some nice hands in the pass game and he's a fighter when he's running.

I love Justin Simmons at #125, and I like him at #88. Strong Safety who can cover. He'd be an upgrade from Hyde, back up to Burnett and could play FS and CB if necessary. He can do what the coaches hoped Richardson would but never did. Good ball hawk, excellent tackler.

6'2 and a quarter inches, 202 lbs, 4.61 forty (4.52 at his pro day), 16 reps, 40" vertical, 126" broad, a tremendous 6.58 3 cone and great 3.85 20 yd. shuttle.

Funny, when I went to go watch some of his film it was stamped with "Watched" already. The second I realized who it was -- I began to remember some of his standout plays. I can't remember if I talked about him on here or not. He's an amazing open-field tackler and I love his range. Hyde might be better at man-vs-man, but I'd take Simmons at Safety over Hyde all day -- everyday.

He might be too small to play the vacant Richardson role, but if he could do you know how happy I would be if we could sure up our backup Safety position AND replace Joe Thomas??
