Packers Practice Roundup: August1, 2025

Short non-pads practice goes 1hr, 40mins. Demovsky
PARTICIPATION:
New DNPs: CB Nate Hobbs (knee) WR Jayden Reed (toe) T Rasheed Walker (groin) OL Travis Glover (shoulder) CB Kamal Hadden (hip) DL Arron Mosby (groin) WR Sam Brown Jr (ankle). Other DNPs: Lloyd (groin), Watson (knee), Oliver (hamstring) & Williams (back). Hodkiewicz
WR Jayden Reed (toe) back in 11-on-11 after dropping out yesterday. As expected, Morgan at LT for Walker (groin), Valentine at outside CB for Hobbs (knee) on first units. Spofford
LaFleur on Jayden Reed: "Nothing long term. His foot was bothering him." Says it may have been his cleats. Hodkewicz
Reed and Wicks are actually practicing during early portion. Schneidman
Emanuel Wilson "tweaked" his knee at practice today. No damage and shouldn't be out long, according to a source. Huber
PERSONNEL:
DT Nazir Stackhouse moving up the depth chart, gets snaps with 1s. Demovsky
Monk is in for Banks at LG in team. Hodkiewicz
Anthony Belton got a handful of reps with the ones at LT. 2) Fitzpatrick getting some work with the ones in red zone. Just caught a TD from Love. Nagler
Rookie second-round pick Anthony Belton got a few first-team snaps at left tackle, with Morgan moving from LT to left guard. 2) Once again, undrafted rookie Nazir Stackhouse took some second-team reps at defensive tackle ahead of Colby Wooden. Typically, the No. 2 defensive line consisted of Brenton Cox and Kingsley Enagbare as the ends and Stackhouse and Karl Brooks as the tackles. 3) The No. 2 secondary usually was made up with Bo Melton and Micah Robinson at corner, Kalen King in the slot and Kitan Oladapo and Evan Williams at safety. Huber
OFFENSE:
Jordan Love finished 10-of-15 with three consecutive touchdowns. 2) In the next red-zone block, Love threw consecutive touchdown passes to Doubs against Carrington Valentine, Heath. 2) Malik Willis threw a superb pass while booting to the left, with tight end John FitzPatrick making a sliding catch at the sideline. When Willis has his read, his arm strength and accuracy have been impressive all summer. 3) Another day, another bad snap by the young center candidates. This time, it was Donovan Jennings, who is learning the position on the fly. 4) As noted, Jordan Love threw three touchdown passes in the red zone. Willis threw two. First, it was tight end Luke Musgrave against veteran linebacker Kristian Welch. Next, it was receiver Julian Hicks in the back of the end zone against solid coverage by rookie corner Tyron Herring, though Brenton Cox might have beaten Anthony Belton for a sack. Huber
Really nice hands from Luke Musgrave, snatching a fastball from Malik Willis at the goal line for TD on third & goal from the 6. Wood
Willis then throws a dart to Hicks at the front pylon for a TD. Nice low throw & catch away from defender. 2) Double play action from Love, then quickly sets his feet and fires to Golden on the crosser. Well executed. 2) Love’s passing starts with off-schedule flip middle to Musgrave, then bullet downfield to Doubs on stop route. Spofford
Rookie third-round pick Savion Williams took a jet sweep but had nowhere to go because linebacker Jared Bartlett read the play and strung it out superbly. Later, Williams got the ball on an end-around and had excellent blocking as he sprinted up the right sideline. Huber
Good box by Romeo Doubs vs Valentine for a TD at the back of end zone. Good touch by Love too. Doubs has had a strong week. Hodkiewicz
DEFENSE:
Really nice rep from Warren Brinson to flush Willis out of the pocket. Had to let up because of the red jersey but good chance he would have had the sack. Nagler
Barryn Sorrell gets a sack on Malik Willis, and Rashan Gary celebrates with him after the play. Good burst into backfield. Wood
It’s hard to make too much out of what happens in the run game, both good and bad. First, back-to-back runs by Chris Brooks went nowhere because of cornerback Bo Melton on the first and linebacker Ty’Ron Hopper on the second. 2) Kingsley Enagbare beat the No. 2 right tackle, Kadeem Telfort, and stopped running back Amar Johnson in the backfield. 3)
The last three plays of practice: First-year defensive tackle James Ester stopping Amar Johnson near the line of scrimmage, rookie defensive tackle Nazir Stackhouse stopping Israel Abanikanda near the line of scrimmage and Sean Clifford throwing too high to Savion Williams in the end zone. Huber
Doubs boxes out Valentine for short TD catch from Love. Then pocket collapses before Love can get throw off to Heath. Likely Gary sack. Followed by boot left TD toss to TE FitzPatrick. Spofford
Jayden Reed with a circus catch from Jordan Love on an out route for about 15 yards. Went up to grab the football over CB Gregory Junior, but Junior tipped it. Reed went to ground and caught deflection on his back. Wood
Good coverage from Kalen King to break up end zone fade for Heath. Hodkiewicz
MISCELLANEOUS:
Corey Ballentine cut by the Colts. Wonder if GB would consider a reunion. Hodkiewicz
Packers HC Matt LaFleur on Nazir Stackhouse: "He's earning more and more opportunities. I think at some point, we're going to have to see him get in there versus our [No. 1 offense]." Hirschhorn [Check - Stackhouse got reps with the ones. TGR]

We are starting to see some of the rookies start to show up. That’s a good sign that the competition has really started and we can begin to see the pecking order begin to evolve.
Sounds like good news on Wilson, which is good to hear after the initial reactions from witnesses.
Stackhouse may be limited in his role, but sometimes it pays to be very good at some things rather than adequate across the board. We haven’t had someone like him in a long time. Im
Looking forward to seeing not only him individually, but whether and how that helps others around him.

With Slaton gone the Packers need a run stuffer at NT. Stackhouse has a huge opportunity in front of him and he seems to be taking full advantage of it. He seems likely to be the next UDFA to make the 53 for the Packers.
Oliver and Williams are watching their chances of making the 53 slip away daily due to injury. Both could wind up on PUP/IR to start the season. No mention of Simmons on defense either and he has excelled in the no pads practices so far.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Williams spends the season on IR. At best he’s looking like an eventual practice squad option otherwise. It’s just unfortunate. Oliver I don’t know. He plays a position and I’d of a type that can contribute fast: designated rusher and STer. If he’s healthy it wouldn’t shock me if they roster him.

I think the biggest problem for Oliver is the nature of the injury. Hamstrings don't generally heal quickly and they reinjure easily if pushed too soon. I think PUP/IR is the more logical destination for him unless it was a very minor hamstring pull. The talent is there to make the 53, but the availability may not be.

I am rooting for Stackhouse. I agree that having a true run-stuffer is enormously valuable, and if he can do more, great, but it is not a necessity.
I am also rooting for Brinson to flat out win a spot just because of the quality of his play. That is, I want him to just make the decision a no-brainer. I think Colby Wooden is a tweener and would be dead wood anyway, or at least no better than a #6 DL on most teams. (I think Brooks has shown far more: he has 25 pressures in 488 snaps, about what LVN has in about the same number of snaps from a position that lends itself better to getting pressures. Like Wyatt, Brooks does something well, at a good NFL level. Packers have a type.) Brinson is a prototypical 3 technique. I just hope he is a good one.
That said, Stackhouse got his first reps with the number one during an unpadded practice. True, he earned them during the padded practices that started on Monday, July 28.
When either Brinson or Stackhouse defeats or beats Tom, Jenkins, or Banks, I will highlight that. But they have shown up against the 2nd team linemen like Monk, Telfort, Glover, and Donovan Jennings and passed that test, in my opinion.

I thought I better fact check myself. So, PFF has Wooden with 6 pressures in 234 snaps and Brooks with 25 in 440 snaps. Extrapolating, Wooden would have 11 pressures if the snaps were equalized. LVN had 20 pressures in 247 pass rushing snaps to Brooks' 25 in 287 pass rush snaps. PFF gave horrible run defense grades to LVN, Brooks, and Wooden. Since we discussed Enagbare yesterday, he had 25 pressures in 293 pass rush snaps.
Brenton Cox had 17 pressures in 97 pass rushing snaps, which is why he is going to make the 53 without any real doubt. Cox paired his pass rush with a 65.5 run defense grade. Gary had 47 pressures in 416 pass rush snap and paired that with an above average run D grade of 75.3. If you equalized the pass rush snaps, Cox would have 73 (65.5 run D), LVN would have 34 (45.2), Enagbare would have 35.5 (64.5), Brooks would have 36 (37.0), and Wooden would have 17 (46.5).
Justis Mosqueda's 53-man roster prediction has 5 DEs: Gary, Cox, LVN, Sorrell, and Oliver. Gary had a down year for pressures , QB hits (15), in 2024. I think GB has to keep 6. People will talk about Micah Parsons and Trey Hendrickson in general just because they are so good, and think about them when they look at GB's roster.

I agree the Packers likely keep 6 DE's and it is increasingly looking like Oliver may not be one of them, at least to start the season. Unless Oliver recovers from his hammy and gets on the field soon I think it likely he starts the season on PUP/IR. TGR: Have you heard anything about Oliver's potential return?

I don't think the Packers will want Corey Ballentine back. He always seemed like a good backup CB and special teams player to me, but they want to go with some younger guys. There are always a bunch of players like him floating around the league. Bo Melton seems to be coming along well. I'm looking forward to seeing him in the scrimmage tonight as well as in the preseason.

Hobbs has played 11, 13, and 11 games in his last three seasons. If not Ballentine, someone like him, in my opinion. I wrote now a couple of times that the last CB is not currently on the team (but there is a lot of camp left to change that).
OTOH, you can list Bullard as a CB to give the team 4 viable CBs, which is my minimum (if possible). He is 5'10" and a half and 198 pounds. That is a bit small for a safety, though at least they listed him as a FS. And they have flexibility with 3 guys who have proven they can play boundary CB and 3 guys who have proven they can play slot CB. GB is loaded at safety and they don't need Bullard as a traditional free safety. So, Nixon, Hobbs, Valentine, Bullard, X (Melton, likely) and Y. X and Y can be young guys. I did not think of Melton as a young guy but checking, I see GB smartly limited him to 5 games in 2023, meaning he did not earned an accrued season. He earned an accrued season in 2024, so Melton will be an ERFA in 2026 despite having been drafted in 2022. He will be an RFA in 2027. Young enough.
Okay, maybe they don't want or need Ballentine back.

Again, I do not understand the love for Bullard as a player in coverage.
To my eyes, his coverage in 2024 wasn't very good. Is there real data out there from his actual NFL performance that suggests otherwise?
I'm asking because I continually hear people talking about Bullard as though he's essentially a CB, and I know the Packers touted him as being capable of covering the slot, and they used him that way.. but I didn't think his actual performance in coverage lived up to the billing.

He had his struggles, but he was a rookie, he was switching back and forth between slot CB and safety, and he was playing injured some of the time. I'm interested to see what he can do this year.

I'm completely all for allowing for improvement, but I feel it would be reckless to count on improvement, that's all.. I personally wouldn't want him to be counted on as the first guy off the bench in case of injury to one of the CB's in 2025.

He's clearly not a boundary CB, but they already have three of those--Nixon, Hobbs, and Valentine--so we won't get to the next one until two of them get hurt. As usual--and this is true for most teams--that fourth CB will be a developmental player or journeyman.

TGR's post states, "OTOH, you can list Bullard as a CB to give the team 4 viable CBs", which seems to intimate that Bullard would be the guy called upon if any of the 3 ahead of him went down (the operative term being "viable CBs" in his statement.)
I would feel much better if that 4th viable was someone with more experience and a better track record in coverage than Bullard.

Yes, he would be called upon if any of the three ahead of him went down--but he would be playing in the slot, as he already does.

Greg, which brings me back to my statement I made in my original comment-
Is there some reason why people think Bullard's performance as a slot defender is adequate? To me, it did not look like he did a very good job. And, again, if there's some data that says he did well, what is it? Because to me, it looked like Bullard wasn't very effective covering routes in the slot.

I am aware that Bullard had issues with coverage. I firmly believe that the best nickel personnel is Nixon and Valentine outside with Hobbs in the slot. I agree that a CBs main duty is coverage and Bullard needs to improve there. Slots also are close to the line usually and Bullard was good in run defense. I have been complaining because I think the odd man out is going to be Valentine when it should be Bullard.
Bullard was a rookie and a 2nd round pick. His measurables read more like a CB than a safety. He is 5'10 and 4/8th inches tall and 198 pounds. Bullard ran a 4.47 forty, 1.51 10 yards, and his agility scores (3.97 shuttle, which is excellent) and a decent 7.00 three cone.
Coldworld rebuked me for failing to allow for the possibility that Bullard might take a 2nd year jump given that he has all the necessary athleticism. Other than coverage, he did a good overall job with everything else.
GB is loaded at safety. McKinney can play both FS and SS. Williams has been good as a SS and I know they have given him some reps at FS, I just don't know how that worked out. Zayne Anderson has held up well as a FS. Olapado looks more comfortable closer to the LOS. Omar Brown has made an impression. That is 4 viable safeties (5 if you include Bullard or Brown) and 4 viable CBs (5 viable CBs if one includes Melton).

Family Night is being streamed on Packers dot com and their app. It is also on free TV. Everyone can watch it pretty much no matter where one is located.
