Packers Practice Roundup: Day 5. July 30, 2019

Packers Practice Roundup: Day 5.  July 30, 2019

Here is a sampling of tweets about today's practice.

Injuries, Usage, Formations, Personnel:

  • Mason Crosby (calf) Darnell Savage Jr. (teeth) Jamaal Williams (hamstring) Josh Jackson (foot) Kendall Donnerson (hamstring) Greg Roberts (PUP) Jason Spriggs (trapezius) Fadol Broen (calf).  Wood
  • Depending on how the team’s joint practice goes with the Texans next Monday & Tuesday, Matt LaFleur said he may be able to rest Aaron Rodgers in that first preseason game if all goes well.  Zhao
  • Josh Jones 'getting a lot of opportunities.  Silverstein
  • Practice No. 5 ends after one hour and 50 minutes with the defense celebrating what can only be categorized as the offense's worst day so far.  Demovsky
  • Za’Darius Smith and Rashan Gary were working with the defensive linemen but then ran back to OLB drills as soon as I walked over. So you’re just gonna have to take my word for it.  Hodkiewicz

Quarterbacks and WRs:

  • Sweet throw from Kizer on an over route to Moore off play action in team work. Coverage was good, just great placement. Nice catch and run from Moore.  Nagler
  • Rodgers zips a pass to MVS on a crosser and then finds Moore on a stop on the next play. Second year receivers making their presence felt.  Hodkiewicz
  • Wilkins got third-team reps ahead of Tim Boyle and then promptly threw one up for grabs that CB Kabion Ento picked off.  Demovsky
  • Kizer drops in a TD to Hall after motioning out. Coverage bust. Then Kizer finds EQ St Brown on the opposite side in the back of the end zone.  Hodkiewicz
  • Rodgers boots right, uncorks one deep, just out of the reach of MVS running a deep post. This connection has yet to get going so far in camp.  Nagler
  • Trevor Davis beats CB Kevin King for a nice catch from Tim Boyle on the sideline. Davis having a nice camp so far.  Wood
  • Nice play action pass from Boyle to Trevor Davis, good timing on comeback route and pass where only Davis could catch it.  Hodkiewicz
  • Nice job coming back to the ball by J’Mon Moore on a deep dig vs pressure. Rodgers had to trust the WR would read it like he did, and Moore delivered. Solid practice so far from the second year wide out.  Nagler

Tight Ends:

  • Nice play by Robert Tonyan, again repping with the 1s, beating Kevin King on a crossing route over the middle and catching a pass from Aaron Rodgers.  Wood
  • Oren Burks blows by a blocking attempt by Jimmy Graham. Would have absolutely wrecked a toss play to Jones.  Nagler

Running Backs:

  • Vitale getting rep as the third down back next to Rodgers.  Hodkiewicz

Defensive Backs:

  • Jaire Alexander force fumble after Davante Adams caught a slant. Blake Martinez recovered it.  Demovsky
  • LaFleur Also called this DB group one of the deepest he’s been around.  Hodkiewicz
  • CB Kabion Ento, undercutting WR Allen Lazard to intercept Manny Wilkins. Ento is a big corner, great vertical, and former college WR. Showed some ball skills there.  Wood [Sounds like the Demovsky tweet blaming Wilkins under QBs above, but a different take – Wood give some credit to Ento.]
  • Manny Wilkins airmailed a deep comeback to Lazard that ends up being picked off by Kabion Ento. Brutal throw.   Nagler.  [Same play as above.  Consensus is more awful Wilkins pass than great play by Ento.]
  • Hollman continues to get reps with the first-string defense.  Nagler

Safety:

  • "I think Josh has had a really good beginning to camp," GM Brian Gutekunst said.  Demovsky
  • Haven’t seen this yet in camp: Josh Jones back with Adrian Amos as deep safety, Raven Greene in the box as hybrid LB. Jones and Greene had been flipped.  Wood
  • Josh Jones: "We put the (offseason stuff) in the past. That's in the rearview. I'm living in the present. And the present is helping this team, competing. Helping the Packers get to where we want to be."  Kruse

Linebackers:

  • ZaDarius Smith and Rashan Gary looking good again in one on ones. Kyler Fackrell had a pair of wins too.  Kruse
  • In 1 on 1 pass rush, Za’Dariis Smith with two really impressive rushes against Bakhtiati. Explosive off the line.  Silverstein
  • LaFleur wants more consistency from Oren Burks. Some good plays, some not so good plays. Has the talent, just needs to "bring it every day."  Kruse
  • Rookie ILB Ty Summers just made his best play of camp, blowing up a run with a TFL with fellow rookie Curtis Bolton. Demovsky

Kicker/STs:

  • First kickoff coverage: Davis, Brown, Tonyan, Shepherd, Crawford, Burks, Kumerow, Fackrell, Greene, Jones. Ficken at kicker with Crosby out.  Wood
  • Speedy Darrius Shepherd on one kickoff coverage. Late add at receiver showing up on special teams and in that WR rotation.  Hodkiewicz
  • K Sam Ficken goes 3 for 4 on kicks, hitting a PAT, from 39 and 50 yards and missing wide right from 45.  Silverstein
  • Sam Ficken goes 3-for-4: 33: Good 39: Good 45: WR 50: Good Now 11 of 14 in camp.  Demovsky
  • XP good 39L good 45L wide right 50R good.  Wood
  • ST coordinator Shawn Mennenga says Sam Ficken "has an NFL leg" and described kicking battle as a legit competition: "Right now, it's open, and we'll see who the best man will be."  Wood

Offensive/Defensive Line:

  • Elgton Jenkins looked good at center. I had him down for three Ws in my super scientific analysis.  Kruse
  • Elgton Jenkins is all man. Impressive in 1 on 1s. Nagler
  • Justin McCray was the top backup at all three interior spots (LG, C, RG) during team drills today.  Kruse
  • It's always shocking to see David Bakhtiari lose a 1-on-1 rep so when Za'Darius Smith beat him twice in a row it's an eye-opener. Bakhtiari won the two head-to-head reps the last practice. This is going to be a great battle all camp.  Demovsky

I chose to use a photo of Za'Darius Smith for today's article. He beat Bakh twice, both times with inside moves. The other candidate was J'mon Moore. IDK, close call, but Za'Darius has had a good camp without garnering a lot of tweets.

Excellent breakdown of the training portion of the day! Really like how the different groups are addressed.

Y’all were so ready to attack Jones and call him all kinds of scrubs, bums, bust, etc for a mere moment in time not seeing it from any other way than that of a fan. I can’t lie seeing some of you constantly do that for every player that leaves the Packers is kind of disgusting for all the crap y’all give HHCD and Randall neither of them have thrown any shade at the Packers HHCD even defended Rodgers when all that stuff came out. Daniels is the only one thus far with the shady comments.

Bah Bah Bah Packers great get with the program Bah Bah Bah......... (Hey the Packers are showcasing Jones, with two DB who could play in the slot out with non football injuries. Gives IAM a chance to swing a deal, and if the Packers keep him, he gets caught up in the changes in their system and at his position. That's all.)

So far Jones is trying and the team is giving him opportunities. I have heard of no splash plays from him yet. He needs to step up and grab the spot now. He needs to get noticed for positive plays and stack those up. When he does, then we have achieved something. So far all I’ve heard is that he is out there.

Well stated. Glad Jones is still here, he has some upside and seems like a good kid. And of course it has nothing to do with showcasing him, just finding the best 53

Looks like Moore took another step and Kizer too. Maybe patience will pay off.

Nice to see Z getting something of a rivalry with Bakh.

Interesting to see Shepherd garnering some attention as a WR and on special team coverage. Could he be in the return mix too?

These are my favorite recaps.

Seven of the 53 guys who we’d like on the roster were unavailable, but nothing serious.

It's always this way at the start of camp, though. Always quite a few players who tweak something when they go from their training routines to actual contact and football movements. Most of these early camp injuries don't linger, but they're costing some players an opportunity to make their case.

Apparently Bahk "wanted to lose" those two reps againist Z Smith. So idk if I'd read too much into that one.

But if Hollman, Josh Jones, and M. Adams/KeKe all happen to step up, that would be HUGE.. a reliable #3-4 corner with playmaking capabilities, a hybrid linebacker very capable of making plays next to Martinez, and a (Daniels) replacement already on the roster eating double teams and adding some QB pressure. Don't even mention the possibility about the surprise contribution from D. Williams, G. Alison, J. Kumerow, J. Moore, E. Jenkins, C. Madison, J. Spriggs, R. Tonyan/J. Sternberger, J. Jackson, T. Brown, R. Greene, T. Lancaster, O. Burks.. hell even Fackrell has to prove last year wasn't a fluke. It's crazy because that's a small portion of the team and just about all those players I named are oozing with talent.. and some may not even make the team, let alone start.

You actually believe he wanted to lose those? I read his comments and hope very seriously he was joking. That is so disrespectful to Za'Darius and his effort as well the entire team when they're out there in a professional environment giving their all for the team. To actually believe no one can beat you is one thing but when it happens to say I let it happen intentionally is a slap in the face to his competition. Just my humble opinion but I was very disappointed to hear Bhak say that.
I can already see the tweets once the season begins. Any sack or pressure he gives up, will have twitter lit up with comments asking him did he get beat on purpose.

Bahk has a interesting sense of humor. He is just using self depricating humor in order to move on. It's a like a golfer making a snowman and saying he would rather have an 8 than a 7 so he missed the putt on n a hole, basically just saying that it sucked, time to move on.

It does sound like a Bakh type attempt at humor. Shock news, pro athletes sometimes say things that fall flat when unscripted!

This is the guy who has been taking time to help others. Give him a break. I am sure Smith will.

Absolutely. This is how modern reporting works: lots of sound bites, no context, no body language, plenty of misinterpretation or shaping to fit a narrative.

Nah.. thats why I said I wouldn't read to much into that set of reps. I agree with you whole heartily and was taken back when I read that from Bahk. But idk if he was serious or not, apparently the way he came off was serious.. he won the 2 previous reps against Smith and apparently finished the rest of the day strong, signaling there COULD BE some truth to what he says. But IMO, even if that's the case.. you dont say that to the reporters? You just know it personally, and take that L.. it's practice

Everyone gets beat eventually- even our all pro Bakh. Just shows how good L’Darius must be. If he can do that to Bakh, just think what he can do to an opponent. It’s all part of improving throughout camp. Go Pack!!

The most interesting thing to watch from yesterday’s practice is there improvement. Sloppiness and max effort was MLF talking points. The veterans must lead the change. I thought him being honest and out front will show he is all in and watching closely. Coaches have to push buttons to get the best out of their players. People /players respect honesty and when you do it consistently you build your culture.
